COMMERCE CITY, Colo. -- A couple fighting about which gang their 4-year-old toddler should join caused a public disturbance that resulted in the father's arrest, Commerce City police said Thursday.

On Saturday, Joseph Manzanares stormed into the Hollywood Video store where his girlfriend worked, threatened to kill her and knocked over several video displays and even a computer, Commerce City police Sgt. Joe Sandoval said.

After he ran out of the store, police were called and the 19-year-old was arrested at his home.

His girlfriend told police that they had been arguing about the upbringing of their son and which gang he should belong to. The teen mother, who is black, is a member of the Crips. Manzanares is Hispanic and belongs to the Westside Ballers gang, the woman said.

"They have different ideas on how the baby should be raised. Basically, she said they cannot agree on which gang the baby would 'claim,'" Sandoval said.

Manzanares was charged with disorderly conduct, harassment, and domestic violence. He was transported to the Adams County Detention Facility.

On Tuesday, he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and was sentenced to a year of probation. The misdemeanor harassment charge was dropped.

Shoot them both, and someone else raise the kid. Sometimes, i feel there should be an IQ requirement to having children. (See the first part of Idiocracy)

EDIT: Can we get a link to the original story?

*blinks* Wow. I don't even have the words. If there is a clearer case for the state taking a child I am having trouble thinking of it.

Just call gangs militias. Gangbangers are insurgents. Bam, War on Terror invoked, problem solved. Mission Accomplished.

I think they both failed the test when they chose not to buy condoms.

19 year old father, 4 year old kid.

15 years old when it was born. This kid had zero shot at being smart about it.

And this kids is why you don't date outside of the gang. Things just get too complicated. Didn't West Side Story teach them anything?

<shrug>

I understand the idiocy, but I think everyone's missing out on the major parallel between this and something many "normal" couples go through.

"Hm, in which exclusionary community should we raise our child?"
"Well, I'm a member of exclusionary group A.  So that's where he's going."
"What?  Why do you get to decide?  I'm in exclusionary group B!  He's going there!"

Of course, the exclusionary groups I'm talking about aren't necessarily committing crimes, so there's that difference.

The ironic thing is that the problem is often typically the exact reverse of this.  Parents leaving their kids at home while they're out partying and in general can't be arsed to give two shits over what the kid is doing.

None of this was about the kid. None of it.

What are the odds on the crips taking out a hit on this kid for slapping one of their women around in public?  Then the Ballers take out the woman and the kid gets to grow up on his own and make his own decision.  It's free will, bitches!

Yeah, but Llava has a point. I hadn't even thought about it until he posted but you do hear about this kind of thing when it comes to religious upgringing, or schools, that kind of thing and no one thinks twice about it.

I don't know what you're talking about.

I was talking about the Yankees and Mets.

You know, I typed that first, then I went to look it up to make sure it was right.  I couldn't really find anything, so I looked up the Mets and said "Well, they're both in New York.  I think that was the nature of the rivalry." and changed it to that.

Once again I've proven that I could not possibly care any less about sports.
