I say chop it off. I hate going to beautiful caverns and seeing all the smaller stalactites have been broken off by selfish assholes.

Intentional vandalism of a cultural artifact is a "mistake"?  Fuck him.  Not only off with his ear, but its still warm flesh should be laid at the f-, um, neck of the Moai as a sacrifice to the gods.

Well vandalising cultural artifacts is very common. Just make your way around Florence or Pisa or any other of the european cultural sights that hoards of tourists go to every year.

The amount of grafitti, vandalism and outright disrespect for things you can find there is astounding. Everywhere you go you can find a stupid graffiti by someone who found it funny to scrape "Asshat was there" into some church wall that is fucking 1000 years old.

People are idiots

There was a poster around here (NASA has labs and shit, and sometimes when they do something nifty or publish a cool paper, they put up a big posterboard in the building where those guys work.) showing how some idiot woman had disfigured a painting. It was an all white bathtub, and she'd put on a great deal of red lipstick and leaned over the railing and smooched a 250k Warhol painting.

Traditional cleaning methods, for some reason I don't recall, would have just furthered damaged the painting. It was stored for several years since they couldn't fix it and couldn't display it.

Some of the guys around here worked out a rather nifty way to clean that crap out. Ah! Found a link. They used atomic oxygen to clean it.

Warhol? Probably improves the 'art'. Warhol probably would've approved, too.

Warhol might have, but it appears the folks who paid six figures for the painting disapproved.

I just found it rather neat that a technique used for cleaning spacecraft worked so well to restore art. (Not just the Warhol, but a number of smoke, fire, and charred paintings).

People who pay six figures for pollocks and warhols deserve whatever the fuck they get.

At least with warhol I think it was all a metajoke.
