I'm throwing together a second box to store media files on, so I can get them off of my main system. When I do, I'd want to be able to stream them to my 360 from that box. Putting Vista on that machine would not be a very good idea (plus I don't want to buy it to just run a file server), so here's my question: Does anyone have any experience with streaming to a 360 on a box running Ubuntu or something similar?

Since the 360 uses a service from WMP, I'm not even sure it can be done.

The 360 is a Media Extender and not a media center device so I am not sure you can.  Heck, I can't even find out if I use Media Center on a wireless PC with my movie files on a NAS and the 360 connected to the NAS via ethernet if the media file still streams through the PC (via the wireless) or if it's smart enough to go straight from the NAS to the 360.

I don't know what's available for Ubuntu but I use Twonky to stream from my ITX server to my 360 and as far as I know you can use any UPnP server for this purpose. Prior to this I was using Twonky on a Linksys NSLU2.  WMP11 also allows you to do this.  I use it for music and movies I've ripped to DiVX for the kids. I'm not going to look but I'd bet there are many applications out there that will do this for Ubuntu.

One thing about a using Media Center on Vista or otherwise is the ability to watch Netflix "Watch Instantly" content on your TV through your 360.  It works pretty well and worth looking at if your a Netflix subscriber.
