I've been toying with the idea of getting one of these for awhile. Schild helped me for a bit, but I don't know if prices have changed or what. I was looking at a Samsung miniDV Camcorder SC-D21. It's running at about $369 canadian. I really don't know what to look at when buying a DV Cam. Would I need a firewire port to make good use of the camera?
I haven't sold these in awhile, nor do I feel like doing research, but Canon and Sony generally are the best DV Cams. I would buy a Sony, recently there prices are somewhat sane (they used to be 100 more for seemingly no reason), Samsungs were always the lower end cams.
If you are going to buy something, spend the money. Buy a DV Cam for at least 500, and then also remember you're going to want to buy an extra battery. They also don't come with firewire cables (most of the time), so pick one of those up.
Oh and with the new Sonys, you can check your email (and surf the net) on the camera! Apparently, Japanese people are busier than we previously thought.
If you want to connect a computer to a DVcam, you want Firewire (IEEE1394/iLink). Bear in mind that some cameras still only offer DV output via Firewire. DV input is nice to have too, since you can record your computer edited works back to tape cheaply this way. The camera you are considering offers both Firewire input and output. I have no idea how good it is. Depending on how much you're planning to pay, the Panasonic PV-GS series of cameras are great value for money, offering 3CCD (one each for red, green and blue) recording for a fraction of competitor's prices. example, but not a Canadian one
