No lie.

The headline is "EBay adjusts pricing to encourage low-cost sellers":
Quote
In the United States, eBay plans to reduce insertion fees -- the cost of listing new items -- by 25 percent on most auction items and by 50 percent on most store items.
HOWEVER, the Reuters article (and MANY OTHERS) neglects to mention this little gem. The associated press article finally nails it -- They are actually doing the opposite:
Quote
The greatest fee increase will come for goods selling for less than $25. EBay's fee for those transactions will rise 67 percent, to 8.75 percent of the final sale price.

What they are doing here is gutting the people who made them big in the first place -- folks cleaning out their garage and sell stuff cheap. They are trying to discourage the sale of small ticket items, and I predict this is the beginning of the end. Craigslist has already taken a gigantic chunk out of their business, and they seem to have decided to give up instead of fight. I don't know about you, but 99% of the things I have ever bought on ebay are "small ticket" items of around $25 or less.

There's no good alternative. It's not the beginning of the end until a competitor exists. Craigslist isn't really a competitor. Especially with the lack of feedback on sellers.

Someone is going to step up. I'm shocked they haven't already. Yahoo auctions, perhaps?

Yahoo Auctions is only popular in Japan.

Only Japan.

Also, it sucks.

All that will do is increase how much people gouge you on shipping and "handling".

Wouldn't it just encourage people to pool stuff into lots instead of selling them individually?  Seems kind of obvious to me, but maybe I'm missing something.

Craigslist is better for stuff like that anyways.

Though I'm not sure why Ebay would care what price item you are selling as long as folks are selling lots of them.

You can't pool things into lots of you don't have lots of things.  Let's say I wanted to sell a VHS of Hakkenden... this new pricing plan would hinder my enthusiasm.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

I don't buy this. You'd never sell a copy of Hakkenden.

Ahem. I meant, you could NEVER sell a copy.

You might be able to pay someone to take it. Maybe. not this guy.

Without being privy to the internals, I'd guess that their revenue is proportional to the total amount of money changing hands, but their cost is proportional to the total number of sales.  So if they can reduce the number of sales while increasing or maintaining the money, that's a win.  At least in a beancounter sense.  In a business development sense, I think it's kind of stupid.

I think a goat would eat it. Or, in unrelated, but still marginally funny news, an unnamed editor might try to convince you of its finer points while telling you how stupid you were not to think it amazing.

Is that joke played out yet? Because I still find it hilarious.

Good.  Someone else said it first this time.  I don't know the joke, either.

I don't either but, around here, sometimes I feel as if I'm the only one not getting a joke and then I feel sort of bad when I have to ask people to explain.  It sort of ruins them, probably.

It's true that jokes are not funny when they are explained, however they are much less funny when I don't get them.  I don't get this one either.  Ignorangutans, unite!
