I don't get it.

From reading the thread (not article) headline, I would have thought they had smelled the money and were announcing an Aliens vs Predators MMO. It would fit right in with the new movie, litterature, etc. They might even manage to release it, before THQ or Blizzard release any space MMOs they might have in the pipeline.

(edited to clarify)

Hmm.  They may have chosen Ice Age over Aliens vs Predator because it reaches a wider market.  AvP would have to be a hardcore gamer game for young males, more or less.  Ice Age is free to hit a bigger market that WoW and The Sims and even the Wii to some extent have tapped into.  Kids and Girls would probably be more likely to try Ice Age then AVP.  AVP would have to be harsh and dark where the strong prevail and the weak eat space dust PG-13 kind of world.  Ice Age can be happy joy fun time for the whole family kind of world.

I doubt I would try an Ice Age MMO though, but I'm probably more of a hardcore gamer compared to the large casual market out there.  I don't like The Sims either so....

They're taking their cue from Disney (Toontown/Pirates). Shit like that. Too many hands in that other cookie jar.

Besides, an AVP MMO would be stupid.

Are you kidding me? If people in this Forum even DARED to suggest a StarCraft MMO- why shouldn't there be a player base for an AvP based?
I mean, where's the exact difference except for the Aliens to be far more attractive than the Zerglings and their kin. Oh- and Protoss wouldn't be playable in a SC MMO.

That said and Blizzard's lack in experience of making a Sci-Fi MMO = epic fail

Honestly though, I couldn't see an AvP mmo working because the basis for all of the stories are small scale. Whether it's Aliens fighting a Predator or two, or Aliens fighting a group of humans. Makes for a good shooter or some kind of small cooperative game, but having a whole world built around the idea of those conflicts doesn't seem right.

Ice Age, otoh, is a neat idea for kids, in the spirit of ToonTown. And like I said, there isn't a lot of competition in that market. While everyone and their mom is trying to make mmo's that appeal to the general gamer crowd.

Unless set in the time frame talked about in the first AvP, the time when humans were cattle, and the fighting between Aliens and predators was ongoing.

I don't think we have a colour for irony.    Maybe we could make brown since no one seems to ever use it for anything.

Would say the opposite -- few IP lean themselves so well to the whole "everything in its own instance, we can't have people actually interact" approach you have common in the newer MMOs.

Aliens in particular seems born for that kind of shit. Just add some predators to the mix, shake well. Nuke from the orbit to be sure.

Well, you're talking to a guy who hates instancing. I think it pretty much defeats the purpose of why I'd even consider playing mmo's to begin with, so you're not gonna get much agreement from me with this either!  smiley If one is going to seclude every one like that, then you might as well just make a smaller game. It'll probably be a richer experience anyhow, with more experts available who can work on that level, and without all of that cash wasted on a huge backend.

That's just me though. I'm not trying to convince you of anything.

Heh i'm not too fond of instancing myself, just saying AvP would work well with it and since that's where the MMOs seem to be heading... welp  awesome, for real

AvP MMOFPS. Go.

Seriously, I don't really think there's enough definition and consistency in either IP, much less both of them, to really think neither or both could be completely redefined yet again to fill a budgetary need.

I'd rather see something like a Predator or Aliens strat game, like X-Com or something. FPS's have been done enough. No comment on "MMOFPS".
