Hi all.

I'm having trouble with an extremely sluggish interenet connection and I was wondering if anyone here could grant me some insight into my problem.

I have a Dell XPS 1710 laptop. I'm using an Intel PROset/wireless and a Linksys router. The connection is always very good/excellent. I've unplugged the cable modem and router in case they needed to be reset. The troubleshooter detects no problems with my connection. I've scanned for viruses and adware/spyware- all clear. Still, the browser takes between ten and twenty seconds to load a page. When I log into WoW, I get a ping that slowly increases from 2000 to 4500.

Can someone tell me what the problem is here?

Answered your own question.

But seriously, sounds like some brutal packet loss occurring somewhere. Have you tried removing the router from the equation first to make sure there's no problem with it firewalling. If the connection straight through the cable modem is good, then put the router back in and turn on features and services one by one until you find the problem. If the connection direct through the cable modem is still spotty, then it is either the modem or an issue with your ISP routing. Good luck.

I assume the connection is fine when you plug your laptop directly in the router, and you don't have any sort of software firewall running rite?

If that's the case START TROUBLESHOOTING.  Move the laptop around, try different rooms and alternating distance between the router.  Make sure there aren't any floors/large metal objects (fridge, washer) between you and the router.  You can also move the router, I can't count the number of times I've solved a DSL/Wireless problem by getting people to move their shit to another room.  I bet it has to do with older houses that have lead paint or other antiquated crap in the ceilings or between the walls.

Ping your LAN IP address from your laptop (If you're going default, it'll be something like 192.168.0.1 or some such)
Ping the WAN  IP address from your laptop (This will be the other IP on your router).

Ping your default gateway address.

If all of those are under 10ms, continue along, use Internet Explorer and go to http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/pinger.asp.  It'll want to run an ActiveX widget, so let it do so and follow the directions on the page.

I spent about an hour or more going over all of your suggestions, so thanks for all the help. After running all sorts of tests, one of my roomies walked in and confessed to hoggin' up the bandwidth for his torrent files. So, case solved.

I thought the appliances might have been it, even though they haven't ever been a problem before- the kitchen and washroom are between me and the living room router.

BTW - PC Pitstop is pretty handy. I bookmarked it.

If you have the WRT54GL, hopefully you have dd-wrt flashed onto it, and then you should read this about torrents and router slowdown.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

Tell that fucker to limit his upload and download speed to half of your cable connection. Problem solved.

I assumed he really meant "I noticed I was still torrenting seven different porn vids".  Also, it really will fuck your router and require a reboot if you don't Plan Accordingly.
