That is some seriously fucked up shit.  Happened before I was born, and I kind of remembered hearing about it in the past, but never really looked into it.  Jesus Christ.  900 people dead, US congressman and NBC reporters assassinated.........

Didn't realize something of that magnitude had happened.

I'm tempted to say that as well, but in the case of the Jonestown massacre, there was alot of evidence that a ton of people wanted out due to cruelty at the compound, but couldn't, because of course, they were stranded deep in the jungle run by gun toting fanatics.  Thats what the congressman was there to investigate, and was trying to evac dozens of people who had slipped him notes begging to get them out of there.  They think many of the 'suicides' weren't voluntary.

Then theres the fact that they killed 287 children, who I really don't think should get the blame for their parents being cazy stupid weak minded fucks. :(

Like I said though, holy shit, that was one fucked up event, even in terms of cult stupidity.

Perhaps, but after going to that link I clicked on this link and saw something I thought was interesting.

Jones and his church earned a reputation for aiding the cities' poorest citizens, especially racial minorities, drug addicts, and the homeless. Soup kitchens, daycare centers, and medical clinics for elderly people were set up, along with counseling programs for prostitutes and drug addicts who wanted to change their lives. The Peoples Temple made strong connections to the California state welfare system.

These weren't neccessarily "crazy, stupid, weak-minded fucks."  These were people whose circumstances made them exceptionally easy targets for a cult.  While each one of them could be held accountable for their actions, their environments of excessive racism, poverty, or drug addiction surely could help a reasonable person choose such an unreasonable path.

It's hard to say if that's the case here or not.  However, it's worth a thought next time you're in a poverty or drug discussion.
