Picked NHL 2k8 today for the 360 but haven't opened it up. Last one I bought was 2k5 and there was season breaking bugs with computer controlled subs from injury. Did anyone else pick this up?

I plan to when I get a 360 some time in November. Hopefully, the new 360s will be out by then.

I am torn between this and NHL 08 (I saw some awesome trailers/demos of it). How does it play? Is it missing anything vital? Is it cheaper than 08?  :-D

I came home yesterday and played the NHL '08 demo and now am afraid to open the package on 2k8. I thought it was a no-brainer at first to go 2k over EA since I love sim hockey but now I'm not sure. I really liked the way the '08 demo played and the few things I've heard about 2k this year haven't been so hot.

'08 should be in stores today so I'll make a choice by the end of the day, it's killing me having this unopened game in front of me.

I'm torn as well. The demo for 08 was VERY solid. I'm going to wait until a demo for 2k8 comes out before I decide one way or the other.

UGH. I don't want to have to make a choice when the time comes.

All I know is that I hated 07, loved 2k7. Gameplay aside (2k7 won for me), the presentation was just leaps and bounds ahead of 07.

I think that is what I am going to do as well. The added bonus is I don't have to cough up any dough right away, and hockey season hasn't started yet so I REALLY want to play.

So I went back and exchanged 2k8 for '08 after work today, the demo was good and I am weak.

I'm impatient and picked up NHL08 last night.

Best hockey game I've ever played imo. I fired up a season on Pro and promptly got destroyed two games in a row. I can't remember the last time I lost a game on Pro, let alone get chased out of the arena. I then made my own team (Gogo Moosejaw Monsters) and did ok, but I also hand picked a pretty hot team that managed to stay just under the salary cap since I grab some great rookies and Kipper for net, all who will get new, expensive contracts next year.

The AI is really good (granted, three games in) and is exactly as advertised, you keep trying a money play, you get burnt. You go for the big hits all the time, you get burnt. This game is all about clogging up passing lanes on defense and cycling the puck on offense. I loved how all the players moved and reacted, and for the first time, really felt like I was setting up a proper powerplay when I had the man advantage.

I have to work on my skill stick skills, since aiming my shots still isn't my forte, but right now I'm awfully glad I went with NHL08 over 2k8 which makes me a little sad actually...

Not having played either of the new games, all I can say is...

You were perfectly able to set up powerplays in 2k7.

Yeah, but this just feels better. Can't explain it better than that.

Played 2k8 while at work today....

UM, WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO THE CONTROL SCHEME?

It seems someone snorted a few lines and came up with the bright idea to remap all the controls. They make no fucking sense now.

FAIL.

Also, the game is ugly now. Ugh.

I fired up a season on Pro and promptly got destroyed two games in a row.

Same exact thing happened to me my first couple games on pro. After I won 12-1 on rookie after a few games I changed it back to pro and turned the shot accuracy down one notch and my games have gone 4-2 W, 4-2 L and 3-1 W so far in my new dynasty with 40 shots/game. Pretty much the best sim hockey I've ever played so far,

I also simmed a season to see who might retire and it had Chelios, Lidstrom, and Kris Draper. WTF I'm going to be screwed if that happens, does it just go by age or something?

Sold. I will pick this up as soon as hockey season starts (which is like next week for our local junior team, who are moving to a brand spanking new arena 10 minutes from my house next year. Score!).

Heart the WHL. I'm heading to the Calgary Hitmen season opener against the Red Deer Rebels tonight, then I have pre-season tickets for Flames vs. Sharks on Tuesday.

My biggest complaints about NHL08 is the number of tripping penalties I take. They've made the poke check super important on defense, but it's way to easy to trip someone up using it. That also could be the change in my defensive philosophy from hammering players as they cross the blueline to using my stick and position to take away passing and shooting lanes. I'm also disappointed to find that all the players I drafted onto my created team still exist on their original teams. I don't know a better way around it, but I had a Phanuef vs. Phaneuf fight last night.

I think I'll try the MuffinMan's suggestion and just turn down accuracy a bit for the CPU on Pro. They can ring any puck off the post and in if they want with the default settings.

So far though, still much love for '08.

Finally got around to picking up NHL 08 yesterday, but only got to play around for about an hour. So far, I am incredibly impressed. The game LOOKS fantastic, and the new controls feel very organic and intuitive. Really looking forward to starting up a dynasty, and getting some practice in anticipation of some online play.

I don't know...the Flames just kicked my ass in my Dynasty last night!  :-D Gimme a few days to get not-terrible and we can go for it.

I thought I was pretty good at '08, until I took my game online. Lost my two games by a single point each time, but that's only because my goalie (Kipper) was unbelievable. I can't believe how badly I got out played.

The AI is still skating circles around me on Pro, with Luongo bailing me out most of the time. I am still adjusting to the new controls (which I like). I am a mess defensively atm- I just tend to control a forward and try to stay near the point guys and stay the hell out of my D and G's way.

I just picked this up and it is giving me fits....

I'm very tempted to just get a copy of 2k7. I just felt like the game played better, especially when on defense.

For the life of me, I cannot pokecheck or bodycheck effectively. Also, nothing beats the full control passing 2k7 had (though the slap pass -> deflection is a nice feature).

Also, I tend to accidentally fire off the 1-on-1 deke moves at the worst moments. And, I usually cannot score for the life of me. I'll give it some more time today, but I'll prolly just swap it for 2k7 tomorrow.

PS: Can you get roster updates on 2k7 for 360? That's all I care about really.

I am going to hazard a guess that any roster updates would be for last season only. Having the newest rosters is half of the selling point of the new games after all!

I have come to a conclusion that whoever programmed NHL08 is a giant Calgary Flames fanboy. They kick the fucking shit out of me whenever I play them, and I beat pretty much everyone else. I am still playing on Pro!

I am probably ready for a MP game if anyone is interested. I suck, but I am getting to marginally effective finally.

Let's set it up! I haven't played in awhile now though, but I'll take Calgary to even those odds up.
