Every time I log in, everything shows up with zero gear and every NPC has an "Unknown!" flag on it. The hell is going on?

You're doing it wrong.

Sorry, had to say that.  I've never run into that.  Sorry.

Delete the WTF and WDB folders, then restart WoW.

Just search the tech support forum for unknown. It was some network card setting iirc.

Do the obvious things - check your firewall is letting your WoW client talk to the servers, check no folders have been set to read only, etc, etc. Then...

Reinstall WoW from scratch (again), do a traceroute to the WoW servers, and run a directX diagnostic. This probably won't fix anything, but that's what Blizzard support will ask you to do so if you've got it to hand you'll probably get a quicker response back.

What worked?  Was it a network card setting, firewall, or something else?

I'll want to know in about 1.5 years when it happens to me and I can't remember where I read about it  swamp poop

Can this be done with the internet?

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

That sounds like a video driver issue. Try starting the game in opengl mode to see if it persists. Or upgrade your drivers.

I found the sure fire fix googling a little, it's a little involved but in short it came to: Uninstall WoW, reboot, install EVE Online

That seemed to do the trick.

I would also consider checking your video card to make sure it is not dying.   I had the "tearing of terrain" and "crazy spikey lines" flying all around on my WoW about 4 months ago.  It would go away, then come back, then go away.  Tabbing in / out often got rid of it.  Then it started happening on my DESKTOP (strange graphical distortions).  Eventually it started showing up everywhere permanently.  Turns out the fan on my card had come unseated and the chip was slowly overheating, and it eventually perma-fried the card.

I had this happen to me too. It was actually pretty cool looking until it stayed that way.
