Well, my old cellphone has bitten the dust, and i am in the market for a new one and have a few options i need to consider, so I figured I would ask for some input on a few questions I had:

My current phone service provider will give me some pricing deals if i buy a new phone through them (big discounts if i lock myself into a 2 or 3 year plan), however, their selection of available phones doesn't do much for me.

Of the available options through them, the following are the only ones I like (in order of what I like best)

1: The Nokia 5300
- Camera, Mp3 player, big screen, Symbian OS means i can run a bunch of game emulators on it. only 5 meg onbord memory
2: Sony Ericsson K790
- Higher quality camera then the others, big screen, no Symbian, 64 megs Onboard memory.
3: Sony Ericsson W810
- Camera, Mp3 Player, screen not quite as big, No Symbian OS.  Has 20meg onboard memory however. (comes with a 4Gig Memory Card)

Every other phone they offer is crap.

Basicly, what I am looking for is a good phone, with camera, preferably something that runs the Symbian 60 v3 OS, and has a good sized screen.  The idea is, i can load it up with some music and potentially a GBA or SNES emulator for kicks.

As you can see, the first phone on my list is basicly the only phone they have that does Symbian, but is also the one with the smallest amount of hardwired memory onboard (5meg).

Any way, my second option, is to buy an unlocked GSM phone from a 3rd party, and slap my SIM card in it.  Going that route, i REALLY REALLY like the Nokia 5700.  It does pretty much EVERYTHING I want it to do, and looks pretty neat also.  Unfortunately, I have run into a roadblock in that I can not find anywhere locally that sells them.

On that note, does anyone here have any experience buying phones from online retailers, and if so, care to make any suggestions as to a reliable retailer or two I could check out.

Finally: in the event that i do NOT get a symbian phone, i understand that some of the people on the boards work in programming for phone games.  In terms of Java support, exactly how versatile is the Java MIDP 2.0 and what kind of compatability does it have to regular java aps?  Could i load a Windows Java based game emulator onto a phone and have it work?

I am also open to suggestions for other phones to look into.

As long as your company uses SIM cards go nuts with online retailers. Just make sure they either have a good return policy or they use paypal. Paypal is god when it comes to products not coming as they should. When my Samsung came used from overseas Paypal just pulled the money from the sellers account and I got to keep the phone.

I don't think any of the three phones you have listed will fit the bill if your criteria are Symbian S60 OS and a good camera. There are a number of Symbian variations out there, but only the S60 platform has the wide range of games (it would be trivial to port S60 games to UIQ and thus support all sorts of nice Sony Ericsson hardware, but it rarely happens). A Windows Java application will not run on the limited MIDP Java platform. You may as well find a third party vendor and get the phone you really want.

I own the W810, its a pretty good phone but nothing to get excited about.  I will never downgrade my phone camera because unlike the Razer the 810 can actually take a picture worth keeping sometimes.  The thing that blows about the 810 is that you need to use a stupid proprietary jack to hook up the phone to your computer or headphones.  Not only is that annoying on principal but the connection is big and stupid.  Otherwise its a good looking, useful piece of hardware.  If you have large/chubby fingers though stay away.

A nation consists of its laws. A nation does not consist of its situation at a given time. If an individual's morals are situational, then that individual is without morals. If a nation's laws are situational, that nation has no laws, and soon isn't a nation.
