Title: Vent Server for Voice Chat
Post by: Viin on February 06, 2007, 05:47:36 PM
Hola,

I've setup a new Ventrilo server that should hold 20 peeps. (Feel free to use this for games other than PS!)

Download Ventrilo's client software (http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php)

Server: f13.7mph.com port 4177 (67.19.19.202:4177)
Password: catass2victory

 Connect  (http://ventrilo://67.19.19.202:4177/servername=F13)

If people like vent enough, we can switch over to that. A lot of my friends use it normally (instead of teamspeak).

But I mean...why? What's the difference? I'm sure more than a few people are already set up here for TS, like I am.

A lot of people don't bother to change the default(very low bandwidth) codec and then complain that it sounds awful.

Then there's folks like me that can't be heard at all over TS, regardless of the codec/ settings they use.  But then get told to turn mic gain down in Vent because they sound like they're shouting.  Very odd.

Personally, I like Vent better if only because it's easy to switch which audio card is being used for voice chat (I use 1 audio card for my desktop speaks and another card for my headset+mic).

Plus finding hosting for Vent is usually cheaper.

Plus with Vent you can get the computer to say funny things when someone joins the channel.

Vent has better quality, I remember when we switched from TS to vent in my last guild we could not believe the difference.

It even protects you from meteorites... well, that's the word on the street.

My PS outfit uses TS and my EQ2/VG guildies use Vent. Vent has noticeably better sound quality.

Yeah, I'll go with Vent from now on. It seemed crystal-clear when I was on with Cal, Tazelbain, Bhodi, and Nebu.

I just want to point out how important chat is for this game; it is not required, but damn sure helps!

So download the client and join us!

I'm trying to figure out a way to extend my headset. I've got one extender, have to find another one somewhere (for the mic). I should be able to at least listen in tonight.

TS/Vent over the speakers was given the thumbs down by the boss ;) I agree with her, though. I can just chuck the headphones when I'm tired of you guys :P

As to importance, in squad-level games, it's indispensable. When I was playing bf1942 competitively we had a match against a team that didn't have voice comms, and we embarrassed them, it was a total massacre.

So i'm on the vent server right now but these guys are talking about castles and crap.

What's going on?

Wrong port? Should have channels for Planetside, Eve, and Other.

Whoever owns the vent server needs to set it to stop kicking everyone once an hour. It's getting annoying.

Hasn't kicked me yet...

Dunno then. Is it a client side setting? Every hour, I get "Server has kicked for reason: No reason given."

I have it setup to drop connections if they are idle for 30 minutes, but if you are using the voice chat then it shouldn't be dropping you.

If you are finding that you are not using the voice chat in spans of time exceeding 30 mins I will just remove the idle kick thing.

There are definitely long silences, like when I'm listening but not saying anything. Especially if you're going solo, or doing your own thing, but listening in in case someone wants to organize.

OOPS I had the wrong port number. I guess either their password is the same or they don't check passwords.

They got pretty mad, because I have my "phonetic sounding of name" set to "badass motherfucker" - so when I joined they were all, "who is that?" "I don't know but SOMEONE needs to change their name."

Haha, funny. They should add password protection to their server if they are using the default Vent port number.

I just checked and I don't have that idle kick set. But I rebooted the Vent server, to make sure it got the settings, so let me know if it happens again.

I put in 4117 instead of 4177. Visit them if you want!

I'm still getting booted. Can you check the logs?

I don't have access to the logs, but I opened a support ticket to see if someone can look for me.

Vent is still kicking me...

Since it's only you, have you tried anything different to see if it stops? Maybe plug into your DSL/Cable modem directly instead of through a router?

I still have a ticket open, but I think their support is closed today for the holiday.

Is anyone else using it?

I don't mind paying $9/month for us all to use it, but if you are the only one left I might recommend that you take over.  :-D

Oh snap, there goes the free ride.

I think my Australian DotA contingent are pretty much the only ones using it. I am happy to make other arrangements if you want to take it down.

If you have a PayPal account you could probably just take this one over. If we downgrade to a 10-slot server it'd be even cheaper.

Or you can sign up for a Vent server where this one is hosted at: http://hostventrilo.com/ (http://hostventrilo.com/)

I kind of use it still, but don't worry about it. We still have the F13 TS server.

How many people are/were using the vent server?

I rent a 25-slot server for me an a handful of friends so theres always at least a dozen slots free, I could add an F13 channel for you guys to use if your getting rid of the current vent server?

I'm sure Wayabvpar, his brother and myself would occasionally use it for our once a month BF2 sessions.
