Title: Day X [5/1/06] - Omg. What happen?
Post by: schild on May 01, 2006, 01:59:17 AM
I'll tell you what happened!

RPGs happened. I know. I apologies. Next time I'll be better. I swear.

But I couldn't stop the three fisted punch of Lost Magic, Atelier Iris, and Metal Saga. I'm enjoying all three and they dominate most of my "time." Also, f13 and a couple other projects I want to get a bit more done on before E3. I had days of games ready and at least 3 more indy gaming things. But it just wasn't to be. Not this time. And I apologize.

These adventures into gaming will be back in 2007.

Mourn the loss of an overwhelming amount of work for an unpaid editor below.

Maybe schild should ditch this whole gaming thing and publish a cookbook. I hear they make good money.

I need a good recipe for artichokes.  Please.

Hm. Artichokes. Haven't had them in a while.

Me either.  Righ went to some festival over the weekend and had artichokes and it reminded me they exist.  I picked up a couple on the way home today and can't decide what to do with them.  I'm crap and cleaning them and getting the choke out, but I thought I'd give it a go.  Usually, after actually winning the fight to NOT clean the dam things into shreds, I steam them and make a lemon butter for dip.  I thought I'd try something different but can't figure out what it should be.  Help.

It really is all about the steamed artichokes and lemon butter though. I mean, why would you want it any other way? I could give you a decent artichoke dip recipe I suppose.

I had dinner in the Jewish neighborhood of Rome, and the artichoke heart I had was fried....I think. Parts of it seemed to be as thing as paper...

Oh but it was good. Like an orgy of taste in my mouth (yeah, I know that statement is asking for it, but words fail me right now).

I've found that when words fail, it's time to wander off, wordless.

Oh, and I don't want to feed my husband dip for dinner.  But thanks anyway.

Bradley Ogden's Creamy Artichoke Soup:

Saute 2 cups sliced onions and 6 cloves chopped garlic in 1/4 cup olive oil.
Add a pound of quartered artichoke bottoms, 1 teaspoon of salt, 2/3 teaspoon of thyme and 2 tablespooons of flour and cook for 2 or 3 minutes, stirring frequently.
Add 3 cups water and 3 cups chicken stock, bring to a simmer, cover and simmer for 15 minutes or so.
Puree in a blender until smooth, return to the cooking vessel and bring to a bare simmer.
Add 1/2 cup cream and lemon juice, salt and pepper to taste.
Serves 8.

I've only tried this recipe once (I got it from my uncle the restaurant critic, who got it in turn from a chef at one of his favorite New Orleans restaurants, IIRC).  My mistake when I made it was not removing all the fibrous parts of the artichokes, so I wound up pouring the soup through a strainer after the fact, which worked pretty well.  Peeling the artichokes more thoroughly ahead of time might be easier than trying to remove the stringy bits after they've been through the blender, though.  The finished soup was still very much tasty enough to be worth the effort.

Ta for that recipe.  I'll give that a go at some point.  Artichokes are a bitch to clean, aren't they?  It's probably worth only buying baby ones if you're crap at cleaning them or just a lazy cook.  I found a recipe for stuffed artichokes, too, that sounds pretty good... and no meat in it!   :-)  I cut way back on any sort of meat in hot weather.  I love summer fruits and veggies, though.

I cheated by buying canned artichoke bottoms.     Cleaning the spiny little bastards can't be that hard, though, right?

Also, the meaty stock isn't absolutely necessary if you're trying to avoid meat.  (My girlfriend's a vegetarian, so this is something I have to contend with frequently.)  I made it with some kind of veggie stock from a box and it tasted just as good.  The lemon and artichoke is what gives it all the flavor anyway.

I never even thought of buying canned artichoke arses!  I don't buy many things that come in cans.  I don't know why I find it so difficult to clean artichokes.  They intimidate me.

Is there such a thing as a flower of an artichoke? Do people eat them?

If so, that may be what I ate. I remember it looking somewhat flowery, and it also had a red hue to it.

Sounds like the heart... but not. Like, the flowery stuff over the heart, that you're not supposed to eat.

It was artichoke testicles.

You ate testicles.

Ahem. The artichoke is the bud of the inflorescence of a member of the thistle subtribe of the aster family (hence they are prickly pains in the ass). The reddish things were the "petals", which in that family is actually a bract. You can buy hearts in jars instead of tinned, at upscale groceries or Trader Joe's. They're good on bialy or pasta, besides the ubiquitous dip. Or you can really dork it up like I do sometimes and "Eat taxonomically!!" by having them with other members of the Asteraceae like endive or lettuce.

God I am a nerd.

schildy I love that you left the '-ed' off 'happened'.

Don't give him /too/ much credit.  It's an All Your Base reference.  But it was a good use of that reference.

War was beginning.
"What happen?"
"Somebody set up us the bomb!"

Ok, it's 2007.  There's barely any new shit coming out until the end of next month unless you're one of the people excited about Rogue Galaxy at the end of this month.  You said you finished Lost Planet.  You can quit being a slacker now for a bit.

I liked Lost Planet and I'm super stoked about Rogue Galaxy. SPACE. PIRATES. Nuff said.

Go back and finish Shadow Hearts 2 first.  Slacker.

Gone.  I might have been part of the reason.  I kept reporting moderators for being unhelpful which was a LOT.  Retrospectively sorry.

Well yeah, but no one else here was!  I'm also enjoying reliving your excitement for space pirates.  Rogue Galaxy was pretty tight.

That fucking game...

Hey, I didn't know you actually finished it.  Funny, since you recommended the series to me, especially Covenant.

Shadowhearts games are an experience. The end isn't even necessarily the destination.

I never finished the first one. Wish I had. Maybe I'll replay that over some random ass vacation.

Don't bother with the good ending unless you want to feel better about yourself.  2 takes the bad ending as canon, which is a bit heart breaking.

Wish the game was as polished as 2.  The red parts of the ring in 1 are just really hard for me to see.

Agreed that two was much better, but one had some great, dark moments to it and much less of the silly humor that was the only think I disliked about Covenant.

I was looking for Schild's review of Demon's Souls and I couldn't find it anywhere. Broken links both from here and Google. Gone forever? Same for McQuaid's interview...
