Title: Roll Call
Post by: Cheddar on December 24, 2005, 02:58:58 PM
Anyone currently playing?  If so what character and what server?  I will probably reroll an evil character and do the crazy betrayal quest again.  Wheeeeeeee!

I've got toons on Blackburrow and Faydark

I am currently on Steamfont, primary character is Jeboob.  Yes, the random name generator came up with that.

Have all my toons on Najena, 45 Swashie, 25 Warlock, 23 Warden, 21 Necro, 17 Bard going Dirge and 12 predator going ranger... yes I have terminal altosis (not to be confused with Halitosis)

Signe, Midden on Steamfont.  Fleas (Righ) also on Steamfont because why would he go to some other server if I was on Steamfont?   :|  Why?

I believe that it was randomly generated because Righ got "Anal" on why of his rolls.  Now if it were Paelos who had said that, I wouldn't believe it for a minute!

I am doing betrayal quest once again even as we speak.  Yeah, I am a glutton for punishment :D.

I may very well start playing again somewhere around the New Year. I enjoyed it while I was playing. Moving across the country and then being away from it for 3 weeks made me just not care.

The grind is gone from this game if you look. I just went from 44 to 47 in about 20 hours /played over the course of a month. If that isn't casual, I don't know what is. I was grouped 70% of the time - half of that in pickups - and I don't tradeskill ever. However, my character is flat broke as casual adventuring doesn't generate enough cash for meaningful upgrades. I am surviving on higher level guildies throwing me their trash.

Oh, and since this is a roll call thread I play on Permafrost as Nitz Hairspritz, 47 zerk.

Because you dolts need a priest and I'm just really desperate, I'm playing on Steamfont and I'll be on as either Mockery or Kiyria

Well, if anyone wants to join a guild full of littlings, we're on Steamfont. I think the highest member is 16 (bunch of defunct higher members in the guild though). I plan on sticking this out at least through February as no new games come out til the 3rd-4th week of that month. Join us on our grind to victory!

Were my daughter not here, I'd join you.  Though I have to admit that days on the slopes followed by nights of board games does beat the mmog grind.

If you're still playing on Jan 5th, I may join you... but I'm not optimistic that you'll last that long.

Title: Re: Roll Call
Post by: schild on December 27, 2005, 10:57:23 PM
Are you asking for a challenge? I'll last that long just to game with you.

Title: Re: Roll Call
Post by: Nebu on December 28, 2005, 12:06:29 AM
I resubbed to CoH/CoV and lasted about 2 weeks.  I'm not optimistic that I'd last longer than a week in EQ2 myself.  Especially on a second go at it.

I was planning to give atitd another go when the 3rd telling starts... but the grind there has me reconsidering. Someone make a game that doesn't bore me after 2 weeks.  Is that too much to ask?

Title: Re: Roll Call
Post by: Murgos on December 28, 2005, 06:02:09 AM
I am considering the resub.  If I do it will be the first time I've resubbed twice to a game.

EQII, for me anyway, has a nagging, "There is almost something there that I like." thing to it.  Now if only they could figure out what that it is and go with it.

I do have a level 23ish rat boy mage; but I am sticking with my 16 rogue troll dude.

Not sure when you quit, but lemme give you a brief run down on some of the changes.

First off the combat is a lot different.  Think Star Wars Galaxies combat changes, but without the suck.  They altered the core mechanics so there are more group encounters, yet solo players can also get the XP easily.  Asian character models were added as well;  shit, the first question out of Schilds mouth to me was about this.  Skills received an amazing overhaul as well.  Finally, quests are easier to find and are worth more XP.  On your map/radar a circle appears when you are near a quest NPC.  Such a small change, but it gives me a throbbing hard on.

There are tons of little changes as well; for example TS now has a griffin station.

All in all I am going to give EQ2 a 8/10.  Once PvP is implemented this may go up.

All of my chars are on Grobb.

Main chars at the moment are 58 Swashbuckler, 34 Conjuror, and a just started 21 Warden.

I was nicely surprised with the newbie experience (at least on Grobb). I started getting group offers around level 11 and continue to probably get a tell every 30 minutes or so from a group looking for a healer.

Even with minimal vitality I've managed to reach level 21 in around 14 hours /played.

I really wish they would start new characters off with 100% vitality though. I was tempted to start the new character and then not play him for a week in order to build vitality up.

You group a lot, eh? And have a higher level character with good gear, or you wouldn't see pvp as a positive.

My characters are on Lucan D'Lere because I'm a dirty arpeer. But I'm also a solo player, so you will probably never see me on. Lvl 17 or 18 Not-Necro and a lvl 19 Not-SK, plus about 3 or 4 lvl 6 folks that got stuck on the orc quest on the newbie Isle.

In case you didn't know you don't have to complete the orc quest on the newbie isle. You really don't need to complete any quests other than the first that gives you your class. Just go talk to the guys by the docks and they send you on your way.

Yeah, I know. I like to actually play the games I pay for rather than just pass stuff by. It's why I don't pay for EQ2 (well, I do have the station pass, I guess). It's not that I don't mind grouping for the occasional quest like that, in fact I probably grouped more on the Isle than in any game besides playing EQ with a couple rl pals back when. I just had a hard time finding groups when those characters were ready and got tired of waiting around, as I hate waiting around irl, let alone in a game (part of my anti-grouping bias). I was a little OCD about being a completist on the Isle, it was a great minigame.

Still remember the difference upgrading my spells made (via crafting, when crafting gave you auto-results instead of being dependent on the components, because I could barely make most components and it was a drag crafting a gajillion things without worrying about quality), I was able to solo the boss group in the tree after doing that. It was a wee bit too tough beforehand, but easy after.

I'd play if I didn't have to buy the box up front.

Title: Re: Roll Call
Post by: Cheddar on December 29, 2005, 10:12:22 PM
Ill have my main back into the guild soon as I finish off one mother fucking mob.  The infamous "Dancoed of the Pine" may not be the worst game mechanic ever introduced, but it was enough for me to slam my fucking mouse down and terminate the game immediately (fuck camping, control + F4 pwnage).

Seriously, I spent my first hour roaming around Bramble Woods looking for this elusive son of a bitch.  Then I got annoyed, and utilized google.  Guess what?  Not a single pair of people, current or past, agree on when and how this Nessie fucking spawns.

So 30 more minutes flipping between websites and roaming around some more (I am a rogue, praise the Goddess, and would of ripped my own eyes out if it was not for tracking).  Nothing.

So I wander around some more, pull my pud, contemplate reality, pet my cat, and watch The View.  Finally I got fed up and went to kill some stuff elsewhere for a half hour.  I return, and guess what!!!  Nirvana.  Its Dancoed!

Only he is level 17 Heroic, with 3 up arrows.  I am stuck at level 17 until I can kill this piece of shit embryonic leakage.  So we begin the PUG dance!!! Lets see what winners we can find to help us today!  A level 13 rogue and a 15 cleric.  Fabulous.  After a half hour the 15 cleric mentions he would not mind bringing on his 34 alt.  Wonderful!  Now we wait for him to recall to town, go to his house, switch his character, and come running from the TS.

I bet you can guess what happened.  Seriously, I wish I would of had the frame of mind to get a screen shot.  Mr. Shiny blade ass kicker is like 2 screens away when Dancoed goes "poof."  Well the websites I read earlier were correct about one thing: Dancoed despawns on some sort of arbitrary measure.

Its a good thing I am mentally unbalanced and a catass to boot; I swear 4 or 5 more situations like this and I may even roll an Elf!

Thanks for letting me vent.  Believe me, this was the short version.

Its art.  And happy ending; I logged in next to Dancoed, put together a PUG, and had him resting in the dirt within 15 minutes this morning.  Anti-climatic, but Qeynos, here I come!

I picked up my widdle gnomey-womey because I couldn't face the Isle of Refuge again.  Mordy the wizzie to be, guilded and rawring to go.

Oh, and the SOGA models for gnomes totally suck arse.  I selected my SOGA model at the character screen and after 10 minutes of tinkering got something that wasn't totally gay or appallingly ugly.  Log in, turn on SOGA models, and guess what?  My gnome looks like total shit.  Total, total, total shit.  Hopefully changing some graphics LoD options will fix it but what ever happened to WYSIWYG?

I only chose it for the rising blood pressure it causes other people to suffer, and that large models in EQ cause the auto-following camera to go into apopolexic spasms when you're in a dungeon/building.

I kind of wanted to be a Bruiser but I read that that is only available in evil-ville and the betryal quest has to be done before the level where you choose that...or something. So I'll just be a monk in happy-town or something I guess.

Downloading install image 2 as I type this. Will still be a while. For only $20 why not? I was actually going to re-install FFXI mostly to try it with my new graphics card but I couldn't find my old ID written down anyplace and I got home 45 minutes after customer service closed shop for the extended weekend. So I said what the hell, might as well play EQ2 a month instead. (Not that I was going to re-sub to FFXI long term, I've just been messing around with demos and such now that I have a decent video card after a year+ of voodoo 2 hell)

I am downloading from "Direct2Drive" on fileplanet.com. $20 for the full game. I think that comes with a free month. (Hopefully...I forget) If not I guess I'll put down the other $15 as well or whatever it is.

The entire download is about 3.2 gigs. Getting 200k+ per second.  (Getting 400k right now) Should be done in another 35 minutes or so.

I levelled mine till maybe 24'ish until I got tired of people educating me that "Rangers suck".  After awhile, I did get tired that my dual-wielding was no better than some thief-class, and that ranged combat (the point of being a Ranger?) was awful.  Maybe 1-2 shots then meleemeleemelee.  Any improvements?

When solo, that pretty much describes ranger gameplay, sure.  At least, I know it's like that for EQ1 rangers until very high levels+AAs, I'd guess EQ2 rangers are the same.  Grouping, tho, you can use your bow and just be a ranged fighter, like a wizard, but more armor. (and maybe less damage, I dunno)

Rangers fucking own IF you have the money to maintain legendary poisons on your arrows. They are better than Brigands and a bit lower on the dps scale than Assassins. No class takes aggro from me when I tank more than Assassins and Rangers - and then they can de-aggro like rogues in EQ1.

Pretty game, though. Never done the Qeynos side so I might give it another whirl...at least until my SWG stint peters out.

There's a problem with Catalyst drivers - you either have to run 5.2 drivers or turn off all the shadow and lighting effects and set one of the graphics settings to -1.

ehh...problem with the drivers, eh? Only affects EQ2 and SWG, eh?

Yeah, it's the drivers. Or every other graphics programmer is competent, as it happens in no other game I have. This problem has been around for a year or so. Why is this kind of shit acceptable in the gaming professions, anywhere else in IT/IS, you'd be out on your ass.

This will only let you play on nooblet island, and max level is 6 for the isle.  I recommend getting it; I know I am having oodles of fun.  Even when I screw Schild out of an instance! I love thinking about screwing Schild. Mmmmhmmm.

I think I might come back in too.  I'm rather burned out from all the Christmas bounty of console games.

I want to see Rivervale again for sentimental reasons ( I played a halfling in EQ1 ), then I'll probably quit again.  Doing tradeskills sort of sucked the life out of me last time, going to avoid that this time.

I will log Stopgap lvl25 Conjuror in sometime today.

I am honestly not sure what the difference between the two are, but I read the EQ2 forums everyday, and I can't honestly think I've ever seen anyone mention a warlock before.  I mean I hear people talk about conjurers, wizards, druids, wardens, bezerkers, monks, rogues, predators, assassins, necromancers, shadowknights, paladins, shamans, enchanters and all sorts of other classes, but never about warlocks.

If that isn't a sure sign, I don't know what is.

I had a low-20's Warlock and really enjoyed it.  You mostly have slightly different buffs, and different damage types, otherwise you're pretty much the same as a wizard.  It's mostly a flavor thing.

I gave it another shot, turning textures and lights down, shadows off and shaders to -1. I'd really like to turn the rest of that stuff up again! Of course, my girl thinks it looks great anyway. But it was stable, anyway.
What card? I'll check out the Omegas, because EQ2 needs to be as shiny as possible imo. I totally friggin love shadows, though, I feel it elevates the level of immersion a whole lot. Because, you know, there are shadows irl.

Dude, those were overtones.

I thought warlocks were a kinda half wizard/half necro. I remember in the early days thinking they split the necromancer of EQ1 into two classes, giving the more powerful spells to the warlock and the pet to the necro.

Caviglia, not-wizard on Steamfont. For at least a couple weeks until my station pass runs out. We'll see from there. Lots of nice little UI improvements imo. But then, I liked the game up through the mid teens just fine anyway...and I'm not quite there yet. My prediction: I might make 20 this time based on previous experiences.

If it's not too late go Wizard. The divide was supposed to be

Warlock - Poison/Disease mainly damage over time based

Wizard - Heat/Cold mainly direct damage based

The main problem is Dot's suck and poison/disease is easier to resist which means Warlocks suck compared to wizards.

The only real DoT in the Warlock spell list is their resistance debuff.  You don't really use it for the damage output.  The vast majority are instant poison or disease damage.  Looking at the wizard and warlock spells lists from 20-40, it looks like the primary differences are all secondary effects; their damage spells are just damage-type swapped, more or less.  They have different buffs, different familiars.  People just don't like warlocks cause they like to turn their groupmates into frogs.

That mid-teen slowdown disappeared. I just grinded through 70% of level 21 (to 22) in less than an hour. On things 1 level below me for about 15 minutes and then 2 levels above me for the last 30 minutes or so. Sure, it helps that I have an igneous apprentice with DPS higher than mine taking most of the heat, but still....the forced grind from before is near gone. I can't complain. Well, I can, just not about the exp curve.

If you need a sage quickly just share the burden.

Everyone harvest and put resources in the guild bank.

Assign 4 people to craft, as you finish a stack of subs just drop it back in the guild bank:

Person 1: Make paper
Person 2: Make Quills
Person 3: Make Ink
Person 4: This is person is the sage and just does final combines. When exping never do the same combine twice.

You could piece it out even more if you want to assign various washes, oils, and whatnot to people.

At some point the non-sages will need to grind a bit to catch up to the next tier as the actual sage will level VERY quickly by doing nothing but discovery combines.

Getting to level 10 takes about an hour if you pre-harvest a decent bit of food stuffs (fish, dens, gardens) then just make each food/drink item once. After level 10 you can put the above plan in place.

Not sure I'm going Sage but I am a lvl 8 or 9 artisan right now from making my spell upgrades on the Isle. Sure would be nice to make the more advanced stuff, but rares in a SOE game make me wince. Because they mean rare for people very unlike me, for me it means 'stuff you'll never see'.

Thought about making food, seems to be a nice ubiquitous buff to have, vs making spells which is pretty one-shot.

Title: Re: Roll Call

If you have a few people who are going to tradeskill I would recommend the following in order of priority:

Provisioner: If you all reach levels 30+ having handcrafted food/drink is the only way to go. Store bought stuff just does NOT cut it.
Alchemist/Sage/Jeweler: All 3 are important as each makes App 4's/Adept 3's for various archetypes. Jewelers are also good to have around for jewelry and Alchemists for poisons/potions later in game.
Woodworker: Totems become very useful in the mid 30's and SoW totems at 15 are handy to have. Cheap to make as well at about 3-4s per SoW/Invis totem with 5 charges on each one.
Tailor: Just slightly above the rest because they can make bags and quivers.

Weaponsmith, Armorer: Barely useful. Not really worth the time to grind up right now. Just find someone to make your rare armor for you ever find yourself in need.

Carpenter: Unless you are really into interior decorating then they only have one useful thing to make and that's boxes. Why bother?

And Sky, don't worry too much yet. Rares are actually MUCH easier to get as you level up. They oddly enough become more affordable the higher level you are. At a rough glance in each tier you make about 4x as much as the prior tier. But market-wise rares barely double in value each tier.

I went food so that I didn't have to pay those outrageous market prices for drink.  I also did it so that I could charge outrageous prices for drink  :-D.  I've think that when the auto level to 20 ability goes in the market for tier 3 drinks will be huge as all those rich level 60s try out alts, could make a lot of money.  Before I quit I think I had made about one plat from selling excess drinks.  Harvests like rye, fayberries and blue succulent should shoot up in value too so I'd save them for now and sell later.  Of course maybe everyone is thinking the same thing...
One of my alts may do this, but only if Miasmas posted mod thingy works magic like I think it will.
I'm afraid there is no magic, it doesn't do subcombines or anything for you, it just lets you do everything from the keyboard.  You don't have to use the mouse to click start and end.

You may have already figured this out but the problem will be he can't use anything from the steppes until his tradeskillers also reach level 20.

Until he hits level 20 he will need harvests from Antonica or Commonlands. Crafting 20-30 you need harvests from Steppes or Nek. 30-40 is Zek or EL. 40-50 is Feerott, Rivervale, and Everfrost. 50+ is DoF zones.

How long does it take to level in this game and how many levels will I need to catch up to be able to do anything with the guild?

Levelling, at least through your upper 20's (all I have personally experienced) is steady and spot on.  Most of us are casual as far as playing, and we have a good level spread (you can look at the current roster, which I will be updating tonight).  There is just tons to do!  Really I have never gone out "just to level."  I go complete quests, gather materials, and whoopsy, I get a level along the way.  It is truly a thing of beauty.

We started over the weekend, I've got a 12 Enchanter, Saucy, and VL has a 9 mage, Voodoolily (duh).

I'm probably gonna roll a 2nd char, as they made it so easy to level that I've done it while acively trying not to.  Sorry if we're not very responsive, she's still learning how to play these silly things.  It's actually been fascinating, having played them since 99, to see just how much I take for granted, control and gameplay wise, that makes no fucking sense to an experienced console gamer.  It's hard enough trying to learn MMOG controls for the first time, but she's basically having to learn WASD, hotkeys, and mouselook, so the chat box is being ignored.

Crafting got its claws into her big time last night, though I don't think she'll be happy with having to specialize.

There's really not much in DoF for you until you are 40+ (grouped) and 45ish (solo - give or take a level for various classes).

You can get to Maj'Dul by taking the carpets in Qeynos Harbor that are at the end of the docks (sorry if you're evil I can't exactly say but look for your bells and it should be nearby.) You'll have to be VERY careful in Maj'Dul as there are a few aggro 50+ level mobs that will kill you right quick. These can be avoided pretty easily once you know where they are but the trick is figuring that out for the first time.

45+ I would highly recommend it as there are a lot of quest series there that can be done solo. But before 45 there won't be much at all for you.

Thats Dancoed.  He is a pain to kill; random spawn plus tough.

Plus random people kill him in case he drops loot - which he doesn't because he's a quest mob.

Not all quest mobs are loot-less. They should be but they're not...

Thanks to signe's buddy key I was able to log in yesterday.

I think I made it on the newbie island before sleep got the better of me, but I can't for the life of me remember my name in game.

Drunk playing ftw and whatnot.  :-D

I dipped into my Murphy's Stout last night, but I don't drink to get drunk :) It's an outstanding stout, imo. Got it for xmas, thanks mom!

I promised my girlfriend I'd stop buying herbal remedies. :(

Actually, there is a valid point that my workplace would fire me simply because of the fact that every arrest and court case gets printed in the paper and it's a pretty conservative job (which is ironic given how totally liberal the library actually is...but I'm talking the board members). Sucks, but it's a valid point.

So now I'm working on getting a friend to 'gift' me some! :P One of the things I'm sad about is that she is in most ways a really great girl, but she's against the herbal remedies (though she says she doesn't mind if she's not around...). I have a tough time with that one. Otherwise, yeah, I'd drink a lot less. A couple puffs are so much nicer.

Helm, that's fungal, not herbal :P

You were trying to give me a fungus?

Cheers.  Thanks a lot.

(Please, WAP... don't start a "fungus among us" discussion.)

Well I got my green card finally.  Dancoed is a bitch to get.  Spawns once a day, and then you have to muster some kiddies to assist, who inevitably aggro the neighbours.  Anyways, I got into Light City and am ready for some punch and pie.  Who're the officers and where do I leave my gold?
