Title: So. Raging Douchebag Week is Upon Us.
Post by: schild on May 14, 2005, 10:52:15 PM
Special Forum. Why?

We'll be posting all news and updates and articles here. And there should be lots of them.

Some rules:
1. Raging Douchebag week isn't about cockslapping the other members of the forum. We have Festivus for that.
2. Aim your agression at the people you love to hate and hate to love. The professional members of the gaming industry.
3. We have a punishment system set up for the people that can't follow the 2 very simple rules of raging douchebag week.

That said. Enjoy our thick wad.

Think we should have an introduce your avatar thread, so we can recognize who the object of your hate is during this most glorious week.

Mine might be dead.

Edit: Oh and the frontpage has had a special redesign for the week. Lots of funneh. Here's a link (http://www.f13.net) if you've forgotten where that is.

If you want to join in the fun, you can go ahead and get yourself a nice developer picture or company logo, and make it your avatar. If we can come up with something witty, you might get a custom title.

Edit: If you have any obscenely mean rants you want frontpaged, just send them along and we'll look them over.

Does anyone know where I can get a pic of Tetsuya Takahashi, the director of the new Xenosaga games?  I want to set him as my avatar but I can't for the life of me find a pic of him.

The JCJ? The Japan Congress of Journalists? I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure whoever is in the picture is not who you're looking for - and Signe, I'm not Japanese. Just covering my tracks before you say it.

I feel moved by the spirit to join in the celebration of Raging Douchebag Week by posting one as an avatar, and in the spirit of bi-partisanship I feel obligated to post a douchebag I unfortunately helped vote into office.

My bad.

Again.

I never said you WERE Japanese, I said you were very nearly MOSTLY Japanese.  Give it time.

I'm pretty sure I even heard you humming that old song on TS.

PS  Sorry about the state of my typing.  I've wrapped up most of my finger tips in day glo bandages as a fashion statement and I keep sticking unnecessary letters in my words by accident.  I'll try and keep up with editing.  You might suffer for my art, but, trust me... it's well worth it.

I still have no clue who schild's avatar is.

David Bowman. President of Artifact Entertain Whipping boy at Tulga and ex-lead thieving bastard on Horizons. He may or may not be a lead designer on it still. Either way he's a douchebag for stealing the game and a double douchebag for making it the shittiest well-funded MMOG on the market.

David Bowman.

For some reason, I thought he'd look less like a 50s throwback and more like a used car salesman.  Or the villan from Pete's Dragon, handlebar moustache and all.

Rasix, I thought about going there for about 1/2 a second, then thought it might only be inviting disaster. You're braver than I.

Winnar

In my hunt for quotes, I found these gems:
Quote
Q: Did you ever dream of making video games? Can you tell us how you got into this?

A: The answer is no because video games didn't exist when I was growing up. I started my career in the packaged goods business. I worked for six or seven years for Johnson & Johnson and another couple of years for Clorox...
...
Q: What game do you play most, and do you know all the cheat codes?

A: No, I don't know the cheat codes. And to be very honest, I don't spend a lot of time playing games. I spend a lot of time watching people play games. My most favorite games tend to be the ones selling the best at that moment. So right now, my favorite game is Fight Night.
...
Q: So they were working 24 hours a day for the next couple of months, sleeping on the floor at the studio?

A: Oh yeah. When our development teams go into "finaling" mode, there isn't a lot of sleep for many weeks and many months.

Q: Then you get a couple of months off to go to Hawaii?

A: Well, we give 'em a week or two. (Laughing.)

And I DON'T put money into things that suck. I'm very selective about my games. The last "bad" game I bought was DX2.

The hype machine has to take a lot of that responsibility.  The fact that everyone's creaming themselves over the new Xbox without having played a single fucking game just because Microsoft spent a shitton of money telling them to cream themselves. . well, that's indicative of the problem.

Actually, Probst's statement is all the more inane for being circular.  His favorite games are the ones that sell well.  It's pretty well established that EA relies on marketing rather than quality to sell games (there's another quote I didn't add about how EA thinks all of its developers will eventually come straight out of college on the cheap).  So his favorite games are the ones the marketing department tells him to be his favorite games.  What a douche.

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, here.  I was in complete despair at the state of the JP CRPG after that, only cured by Paper Mario.  Baten Kaitos helped a lot, too.  My defense is that my wife wanted to watch me play something like FFVIII or FFX again.  Well, not as much like FFX since only Auron is a hottie, but she kept asking me when FFXII was coming out.  This is pretty much the only time I have ever refused to play a game she wanted to watch.

Seymour?  Really?  Huh.  I don't see it, and I think Bowie is the best thing ever.

My wife does not believe me when I tell her I like Lulu for her personality and fighting style, which would be ironic if you knew my wife.  Having Lulu in the party all the time doesn't add to the allure for my wife, even carrying the cactrot.

The one good thing about Star Ocean 3 is that my wife and I both like Cliff.  I think he is hilarious and rag on him constantly, while my wife loves his arms and perhaps his attitude.  Otherwise the game is a horrible chore.

Speaking of such things, has anyone noticed how hard Baten Kaitos bit off FFX for characters? Gibari and Wakka are practically twins, you got the innocent, nice magic-user girl (Xelha and Yuna), the blowhard cockmunch main dude (Kalas and Tidus), the slutty-looking one (Savyna and Lulu), and the one who is supposed to be the enemy because of their affiliation (that red-haired empire dude who I never use in battle and Rikku). The only characters who are different are Mizuti and Auron. I like to call him Automatic Mizuti.

Edit: I didn't really start using Lulu until I got 1MP Cost, then I started cranking out Bio, Death, Ultima and Doublecast. Unfortunately, Bio and Death hardly worked on anyone, but Ultima kicked ass. Then I got all the aeons and just used Anima and the Magus Sisters to wreak havoc.

As I often say, this is a Japan-wide problem.  It's not that BK so much ripped off FFX (which they did, don't get me wrong) as much as they just used the same damn characters you see in every game.  Kalas reminds me of Fayt in several ways, in fact, as well as Tidus and Squall, but Fayt is dumb as a bag of hammers.  I do find the inclusion of the two islanders (Wakka and Gibari) amusing and have deduced that they are stereotypical Pacific Islanders in JP culture.  Mizuti = Vivi from FFIX.  Sophia in Star Ocean = Yuna = Xelha, except Sophia is also a moron.

They are close to that already. Same with 3DO, which was founded by the ex-founder of EA. I know a guy who worked at EA for maybe 3 years straight out of college and got burned out already. Talent is what makes good games, but talent doesn't really sell games for a company like EA. Especially when your best selling games are just yearly updates where you add a hot-dog stand simulator or some shit like that.

When I interviewed at 3DO I felt old walking around and I was just out of college with a Masters degree. Part of it was that people there really were young, and also that the overall vibe was very immature.

That sort of thing will never create good games and would never work for a new studio though. It only works if you just churn out the same mediocre crap over and over again and have enough existing property and marketing to carry the company.

Re: Gamers perpetuating the problem:

Agreed. I've tried to be pretty good about supporting only the stuff I really believe in, but even I was buying crap now and again.

I haven't bought a single game this year. Not a single one. I have plans on buying two: GTA:SA, and Civ4, and I'm real (reeeeaalll) suspicious about Civ4, because I thought Civ2>Civ3 in many aspects.

I finally made the decision to not settle for shit just to get my gaming fix. If there's not a good game around, I go do something else. I do believe I've broken the back of the addiction :)

If you say so.  I stopped paying much attention to him after he moved to that cabin in the woods to write Mythos, Dangerous Journeys, or whatever it was called.  If true, though, then I agree.  You can explain it to me if you like.  That doesn't get The Vision and the EQ copycats off the hook, though.

No, it doesn't. But we had to pick one MMORPG guy because the frontpage couldn't be crawling with that sorta shit for a whole week. So we picked Marc Jacobs. He doesn't realize that Romans in Space is going to be a superbly crafted train wreck, which is cool and all - I mean it's hard seeing sinking ships from way up top an ivory tower. Those things are tall. And the Warhammer news this week just makes his appearance on the frontpage THAT MUCH BETTER.

Yikes.  Mantis' wherever you live are much more cuddily than here in Texas.  The photographer would be shooting your bloodied armstump...  We had a sac pop this past weekend in my garage and the kids spent all day teasing eyelash-sized armstump-makers out to the garden.  Cute little guys when they're that little, and as tame as a junkyard dog.  The tarantulas are much more mellow.  Well except during mating season.

The scary part is that SHE (yes, the dog is a she) DOES hump my leg when she gets excited, usually after I've gotten home from work. I have no idea what that means, but it is the funniest looking thing.

The family I adopted my cat (Desmond) from has two lesbian dogs. They're obviously female, but they take turns humping each other.

The other day I caught my other cat Bock standing over Desmond from behind, holding the scruff of his neck in his teeth and kinda growling. It was hard not to assume some hanky-panky was going on. Either that, or Bock fancied Desmond his prey, and had him in the death grip.

I am embarrassed to admit that I knew precisely who Pearcy was as soon as I read his name. And I still think Astley takes the crown for most over-produced. Pearcy might win 'most record sales with the least talent', but I think Dee Snider and Kevin DuBrow might have something to say about that.

That's the scenario presented by C|Net editorialist David Carnoy. He argues that the price of a new console versus the price of a PC gaming rig will have gamers migrating their gaming habits to the couch and using the extra dough on items such as an HDTV. Even if they're only upgrading the video card, a $300-$400 console sounds better than a $400-$500 cutting-edge video card.

The bottom line is that console manufacturers often heavily subsidize their new machines, swallowing huge losses up front in hopes that they'll make it all back selling games. (Unlike PC games, the console manufacturers get a royalty for each game sold on their respective systems.) Other things being equal, the DIY-heavy PC-gaming industry can't hope to compete in that kind of market.
So with PC game sales either declining or remaining stagnant over the past few years and the fact that big-name titles are also landing on a console (Quake 4, Prey, Alan Wake, UT2K7), do you believe PC gaming is going the way of the arcade, losing its business to the consoles?

C|Net is only a month behind us. Corporate press is a delayed feedback industry all to itself. The C|Net logo is now a douchebag unto itself.

Why does everyone think this? This is not some industry standard, but rather a new practice comingled with an  old myth (http://www.actsofgord.com/Proclamations/chapter02.html)

In our current generation there is good reason to believe that only MS subsided their console significantly.  Nintendo, with its lower quality hardware and steady profits is probably making a small profit on each console sold.  Ever mysterious Sony is iffy, but given the initial chip shortages and the consistent positive earnings for their game division since, oh, 97 or so, I'd wage they are at least breaking even.

A month hell. I've been saying this for at least a year if not more. The writing is on the wall, and that wall is in the local EB, which doesn't so much carry PC games anymore as it does humor them by a modicum of inclusion.

I'm fairly certain Sony lost money on both the PS1 and PS2 initially, because the systems are not put together very well and are difficult to manufacture. MS lost boatloads of money on the XBox though.

IIRC the trend is towards more people owning fewer games each, so loss-leading makes less and less sense.

This is news to me, but it makes sense given the rest of the industry and the growth of rental companies.  Can you cite a source?

I wonder if there is any relation to game price as well...
