Title: Achewood. Again, people!
Post by: voodoolily on April 20, 2005, 09:37:26 AM
Why aren't y'all reading this?! Seriously.

Yesterday's Achewood  (http://www.achewood.com/)was genius.

Sadly, that's really only funny if you know all about Pat, both from the strips and from reading his blog.

Aw, c'mon. The Nader fish with testes? Hilarious. And the phone restaurant and Honk if you Love Jesus? Genius. I think it speaks to a larger audience, but that's just me.

Now everybody dance like there's ass in your pants.

I know.  I just felt like playing Devil's Advocate and posting something in this thread since I knew no one else was gonna.

Onstad does some fairly brilliant things with the "Calvin peeing on things" concept.

Well, i didn't think it was funny, and I know nothing about it, so Sauced's point seems about right.

WHAT... THE... FUCK?

The funniest part was the random leaping over the wheelchair. Which wasn't funny.

It was like Napoleon Dynamite, only less stupid.

That's right, I'm necroing this two year old thread.  BECAUSE I LOVE ACHEWOOD.  Deal with it.

Premise: Phillipe is a 5 year old kid.  He's an otter as well, but that's unimportant.

I agree with the panda.  Just not funny.  I'm not even sure how it's supposed to be funny.  I don't see any perceivable dimension where this is funny.

They should use that comic as a cheap and effective drug test.  If you read one and laugh you are clearly on some very strong acid.

Double Plus No.

While I can see that the author is intelligent, I find absoutely nothing funny about these strips at all. They are like Steven Wright skits, if Steven Wright were horribly unfunny and completely unable to deliver a coherent premise and punchline.

Lesion, knowing you, and having had conversations with you, it's totally your humor.

However, this thread needs a huge dose of YMMV. I think CAD is funny, and I rather liked Queen of Wands. However, they aren't for everyone.

I like many off the wall and/or very different types of humor (I even liked the first few episodes of Tim and Eric before I couldn't stand it anymore), and am a great fan of wordy/witty type comical humor, but I can't even imagine how anybody could find any of this funny.  ESPECIALLY intelligent people.

Family Guy is probably my least favorite of the Fox Cartoon creations.  American Dad is leaps and bounds funnier then Family Guy.

I find Family Guy funny enough (although I haven't watched the more recent seasons, which reportedly aren't that good).

I found some of the above strips funny, but they seem to me to be a less punchy version of Red Meat.

See, I like Twisp and Catsby. It isn't as funny as most of the PA stuff, but it's a nice change sometimes. I could see them being an animated short.

Achewood? I just don't see any funny whatsoever.

Title: Re: Achewood. Again, people!
Post by: Ironwood on January 08, 2008, 02:10:02 PM
No matter how much you like the subsequent development of Twisp and Catsby, that cartoon right above your post was WHY it was brought out in the first place and it's only massive fan reaction that made it any kind of feature.  The recent Moon Poem/Short was awesome, but at least it was more understandable (and funny) than any Achewood I've ever seen.

Really, the point I was making was that I was being told that I didn't get Achewood because I'm not bright.  Seeing as I apparently laugh at people getting hit in the nuts by a football.  Which I don't remember ever doing.  Unless it was that time the Sir Bruce Dances video was posted.  He danced like he was kicked in the nuts by a football.

However, me not being bright...   I kinda don't think that's the case....

I did laugh when Hans Moleman got hit in the nuts by a football.

If Achewood is right and Hans Moleman getting hit in the nuts by a football is wrong, then it's time to bring society down and start over.

I never knew it was a competition. What did I miss out on winning by not showing off the fact that I, like nearly everyone else, has watched the Simpsons?

Also, this is called being a smartass. It's different to trolling as it doesn't require a response on your part to be rewarding.

Yes, but a joke about a man getting hit in the groin with a football has a man getting hit in the groin with a football.

Okay, chortle-worthy.

Ironwood, the Seinfeld thing almost requires having lived in America. It doesn't translate to other countries.  Don't know why that's the case, but all evidence suggests it is.

Title: Re: Achewood. Again, people!
Post by: voodoolily on January 09, 2008, 08:40:24 AM
The longer one below was when Ray discovered that perfect male internal peace and oneness with the universe was obtained via the simplest of concepts: that a simple weight placed at groin level would act as a counterbalance. He then added a handy holder for a cell phone or whatever a man needs to carry. There's a whole story arc for that one (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=05242006), and it's pretty great.

Sauced may be able to elaborate, but that was how I remember it playing out.

Edit: Added link to story arc.

No, Seinfeld does suck. It's not really a cultural thing at all.

Best STOP there.  I mentioned that show because we've had silly 'What's Comedy?' threads before and it usually devolves in just such a way.

I usually get berated for not finding Seinfeld funny, but I still honestly believe that it's more a cultural thing than a style-of-comedy thing.  Guy just comes across as 'Smug Unfunny Jewish New Yorker and his Stupid Ass Friends who need Sectioned.'

And then everyone chimes in 'Oh you must have loved the one with the bet !!!'  and I say 'No, it was a 30 minute wank joke that wasn't funny when I heard it in 1st year at School'.

And then the beatings begin.

I find it strange that somebody who is championing the merits of Achewood does not like Seinfeld at all, considering both use absurdity as a primary focus of their comedy.  Saying Seinfeld sucks outright just seems like pretension when taken in this context.  It's pretty easy to hate what's popular even if the reasons are not valid: people want to be unique little snowflakes.

Title: Re: Achewood. Again, people!
Post by: schild on January 13, 2008, 06:56:53 AM
I'm just of the opinion that anyone that doesn't like Seinfeld doesn't like Larry David. And not finding Larry David's writing for Seinfeld absolutely brilliant just means you don't like fun. And you can always pick out the Larry David stuff. It's a lot meaner and sharper than the stuff Seinfeld wrote.

They weren't as "on" as many Seinfeld fans would leave you to believe, but when they got it right, they got it better than anyone else.

The mailbag/airport gambling episode was just a stroke of genius. And I hate to even bring up the backwards/wedding episode. If you don't find them funny and brilliant at the same time, you're broken. And I hope you take it personally. Broken. For sure.

The only episode that I remember as having been written by Larry David was the series finale.  Which was far and away the worst episode they ever made, relentless cameos or no.

He was basically the head writer for seasons one through seven, then he left.  I think one of the reasons the finale sucked was because he came back after two years of not doing Seinfeld.

That comic, and yesterday's, are probably the worst ones to show to new readers.  :uhrr:  They're not really trying to be funny.

You really do have to start at the beginning of the archives and get to know the characters.  And read the blogs linked on the main site (most of the main characters have one), which are awesome as well.  But yeah, it's not for everyone.

Although it did win Time Magazine's graphic novel of the year.

Ok, seriously, how bout you people that don't like Achewood stay the fuck out of this thread?  Before you say more stupid shit like this.  I mean, I don't come into your threads about things I think are stupid and take dumps there.  What the hell is wrong with you?
The thread is about trying to get people to like this retarded comic, it even starts with a question.  We're answering that question.  If you ask "Why aren't y'all reading this?" (http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=2979.msg75135#msg75135) and then don't like the answers that's your God damn problem, if the internet is too tough for you stay the fuck off it.

Edit:  And I thought you weren't allowed to post from work anymore, what happened there?  Man that was a fantastic day when you went silent, no more spamming the boards with one hundred posts a day about the inane shit that goes on in your life.  And now it seems you're slowly creeping back, bad news.

I took this thread as a mandate to read Achewood and xkcd, and I got a good laugh out of some strips of one and completely loathed the other. And I won't tell you which is which because I know what Mantis females do to Mantis males even after being pleased by them. So I won't piss one off voluntarily.

But really, where does this hubris come from that people think what is funny for them must be funny for everybody? And judging other people that don't get it as stupid?

Lighten up, humor is a personal matter.

Dude, what on Earth are you talking about, have you read the third page in order?  VDL was the first person to start telling people to fuck off.  No doubt another one of her pathetic and tiring non-sequitur slams on Haemish because she's a basket case with daddy issues who thinks Haemish is a terrible traitor to f13.  Then Sauced got all profane and ballistic, on a mod of all people, for criticizing the comics when the very first sentence of the thread is "Why aren't y'all reading this?". (http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=2979.msg75135#msg75135)  It's not my fault if these two are such hardcore Achewood fans that they resort to cursing and whining like little bitches when someone simply says "no, I don't think that's funny" in answer to their own damn question.

Miasma once accused me for abusing my Den posting privileges. Don't mind him.
Wow, still got sand in your vagina about that one huh?  The truth really seems to get under your skin, aren't you due for another emo session where you get all maudlin and leave the site for a few months?  I think it was people criticizing religion or something last time right?  I'll be sure to try and steer future conversations in that direction, if it doesn't cause you to take your ball and go home maybe it will at least cut you down from 50 worthless posts a day to 20 or so.

I'd like to point out (late to the party, I don't read Comics too often) a few quick things.

1.  Thanks go out to Miasma, the 3rd and 4th pages of this thread were actually fun to read.  The first two, not so much.
2.  This Achewood stuff is pretty bad at times, for all the reasons everyone else has posted already.  But I'm willing to pretend I believe that if I read them all from the start and read the character blog that went with each post I would so get it and so find it funny.  For real I would.
3.  I agree with almost all of the mean things said about everyone in the last two pages of this thread except the bit about daddy issues and Haemish, that was some of that real serious internet drama I have so far managed to let pass by me in the night blissfully unawares.  The rest was spot on though.
4.  Did you know?  I once changed my password to the date the Orange Box came out because I was finding another poster I couldn't stand every day it felt like.
5.  This other comic people started posting is pretty funny and cool.
6.  I watched two episodes of the Boondocks on Monday, they were pretty damn good.  I am looking forward to seeing the episode(s) that follow the Katrina storyarc from the printed strip.

P.S.  Making a rainbow colored bit of text is fucking hard work.

Thanks f13 for helping me pass some time!   :awesome_for_real:

I'm amused about how anything about me is "spot on". I hate religion, for one. And if I've ever gotten "emo" about the subject, it's when some people put their blinders on to that, ignore anything I'm actually saying, and start turning me into an opponent for their own little reasons. The idea of me leaving the site because of religion is absurd.

Ha, I hate achewood. The strip is just bad. It doesn't really do anything right. It is neither funny, nor random/absurd enough to become funny. It is perpetually stuck in this unfunny limbo...Really, really terribly strip.

On the other hand, I fucking love Tim and Eric. (someone mentioned it early in the thread) It is just absurd, bizarre randomness. That show is all over the freaking place. It makes me laugh at things when I don't actually want too.. Those guys are super weird.

Perry Bible Fellowship, in my opinion is one of the best strips out there. Aside from being clever, Gurewitch is a fantastic fucking artist.

He is currently on hiatus, but his last strip is still funny to me...

There's nothing to get. There's no punchline. It's like watching a cartoon or reading a blog - you only find it humorous or entertaining if you care about the characters and/or their personalities and antics amuse you.

S'cool, I ain't mad. I think I was going through smoking cessation when all that bile came out, so it was prolly my fault anyway.

I agree with you though, that her "cherry" was popped by Peanut Butter, therefore she was pure. The premise of this strip is flawed.

Post by: HaemishM on November 13, 2008, 11:23:40 AM
The lid says that the button WILL pop if her seal is broken. I'm thinking Peanut Butter expected not to hear the pop, meaning she was pure. Hearing the pop meant she was a whore.

Peanut Butter Tested her for freshness. The saftey seal clicks or pops when you press it, if it does, then the jar has been opened already. You usually test this at the store. So The comic is completely correct, and amazing.  :oh_i_see:

But if it goes pop then it's pure.  The comic is wrong.  If at any point you open jam and hear a pop then that means no one else has opened it.  It's a vacuum seal, if you don't hear a pop that means someone else has already opened it.

None of you fuckers eat jam with butter and toast do you?

Well once it's been popped you can keep popping the now-flexed freshness thingy.

I'm so sorry.

It's not my fault here that people choose to talk about this stuff instead of good comics, like Red Meat and Wondermark - the latter of which I wish I knew about a long time ago.

Did we forget to give you a Bay Guardian to read when you were in SF?  Red Meat is pretty awesome.

It popped while closed. THAT is how you test it. If you couldn't test it until you took the lid off that means you'd be buying without testing! Madness.

I tried it with my jam at home and I guess it does make a tiny pop if you push on it.  I've always assumed it meant the loud vacuum seal being breached POP when you first open it.  I have learned something new about jam.  Is there any stunning peanut butter or miracle whip wisdom you guys can lay on me?

You can mix peanut butter with jam for a heavenly sandwich (assuming the jam isn't a filthy harlot)

Peanut butter (crunchy of course) and Nutella works pretty damn well too, on hot, thickly sliced granary toast.

Peanut butter, banana and honey sandwiches are awesome.

On weird sandwiches I know more than a few people who fondly remember sugar sandwiches as kids. That's just sugar and butter  in a sandwich. I've not tried it and maybe it's nice but the idea just seems :uhrr:

I remember eating butter and sugar sammiches. Sometimes you could mix it up and add cinnamon. I saw it in my beloved Disney activity book - Donald made me do it!  :why_so_serious:

@schild PB + mayo = fail. I was a kid!

Butter, sugar and cinnamon is basically french toast without being fried and without egg. Of course it tastes good.

I mean, it's like 2 of the 3 best things on the planet, and then cinnamon. Peanut Butter and banana is delicious, honey may or may not be overkill.

I don't get the cultural phenomenon that is peanut butter. Whats wrong with normal butter.

Mmmmh, fresh slice of rye bread with salted butter.

Title: Re: Achewood. Again, people!
Post by: apocrypha on November 21, 2008, 01:42:21 AM
But peanut butter and normal butter are completely different things. It's like comparing homemade plum jam with a teaspoon of white granulated sugar. Not that there's anything wrong with either, as with peanut butter and butter, but they're just not the same.

Bread & butter = yum.
Bread & peanut butter = yum, but different.

My co-worker takes vacation days to cook his apple butter.  He has a large copper pot over an outdoor fire.  Once a year he sells pint and quart jars.  They are food of the gods.

Ashame you aren't in Texas. I'd drive a decent distance for fresh, quality apple butter.

Hi! I'm participating in this thread. I was driving in my car listening to the Sound of Young America interview with Chris Onstad and thinking how there should be a thread for Achewood.

So, uh, there is one and now I'm left out in the cold here.

The first strip of 2009 is good news, though. Looking forward to cuddlenacht.

In the manner of a nice little transition here back to talk of food and drink, in the Achewood Subscriber section, the coversheet of the latest 'man why you even got to do a thing' magazine includes a recipe from Teodor for a simple Limoncello recipe.

Having not known anything about Limoncello prior to this, I did my research online (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limoncello), and now I think that I need to try this.

Anyone else dabbled in the self-infused alcohols?

I made my own aqvavit once. It tastes exactly like "Viking firewater" implies it should. I've made my own vanilla vodka too, and I make my own bourbon vanilla extract for cooking now.

I searched and the word Viking did not appear once. I am disappointed. I want to tell a lady I am going to offer her Viking firewater.

I think we basically have this thread to ourselves, though.

WE WIN.

You can still offer a lady Viking firewater. I can't drink it, but sometimes I use it (with broth) for braising porkchops, or in fondue in lieu of kirschwasser.

I will offer a lady Viking firewater. Hopefully it won't set off her innuendo alarm.

I have probably 4-5 signed, framed strips that I still need to hang up at various places in my house, along with the Great Outdoor Fight poster I need to get framed.

I still kick myself for not going to the book signing he had in LA, it was a 15 minute drive for me.

I'm trying to remember which ones I got signed. These, I think:

http://achewood.com/index.php?date=12012006
http://achewood.com/index.php?date=09022004

I may have gotten the Nice Pete describing what it is like to kill someone strip, as well. If you look at the alt-text for the strip prior to that one, it talks about how he does his murders in nothing but tube socks and a tanktop, and then he's only wearing tube socks and a tanktop in that one. So good.

My friend also got me this one for my birthday - http://achewood.com/index.php?date=01022007 - it is notable for the usage of the phrase 'cask-strength gay', which is pretty amazing.

I love all of the ones where Beef has depression.

We went to his signing in Portland, got TGOF autographed, got a photo of Onstad, etc. He complimented my camera. Good times.

I have purchased each of the books, with inscription, for sauced for Christmases and birthdays. Should move on to strips and art, I guess.

The boy is from Circumstances, after all.

I haven't picked up any of the books of the strips just yet. I went on a webcomics book shopping spree and picked up the PBF book, the Wondermark book, the Dinosaur Comics book, and TGOF - still no books, though. I think I'm waiting until I have the cash to do it right, because I want them all to be personalized.

I also own two Achewood hoodies - I have a green Dude and Catastrophe hoodie, and the Achewater hoodie.

The nice thing about Achewood fans is that all of them have a shirt or something, so they can be easily identified in a crowd (e.g., at a concert) and instantly bonded with.  :awesome_for_real:

Exactly! At least from the handful of Achewood fans I've met, if they get and love the humor, they're generally good chaps to be around.

It's an interesting phenomenon, though. I would say moreso than wearing a game shirt or a movie shirt, if you specifically wear a shirt from a webcomic, you can kind of pin down an individual's sense of humor, which gives you a way to at least chat on the same level. At least for me, I have to be a large enough fan of a comic to justify buying a t-shirt from them.

I haven't been recognized in my Kate Beaton or Pictures for Sad Children shirts yet, though.

She is awesome! Apparently she is dating the Pictures for Sad Children guy (John Campbell), according to his hourly comics (http://www.hourlycomic.com/). It's like Melrose Place for webcomic dorks, har har.

I get props for my 'reading: this shit is crazy' shirt. It's this mega ultra green color, which is in stark contrast to my super purple 'the internet: where awful people meet' shirt.

I just got my order today (delivery guy woke me up at 7:45am!) of some PFSC and Dinosaur Comics shirts and stuff. I was going to get a Kate Beaton one too but I'm sort of poor like. The reading is crazy shirt was so close to being purchased, but alas!

I'm wearing "It is difficult to be alive" right now, in fact!
This one is probably the most awesome shirt though:
Oh hey I'm derailing the Achewood thread... umm. I find some Achewood funny, some notsomuch. But when it is funny it's pretty darn funny.

Hi Non! I miss you. :(

Me too!  :heartbreak:

After Warhammer asploded, we have drifted so far! That, and never calling to meet up with you guys at Blizzcon. Brutal!

There will be another game, I assure you! Another bonding opportunity!

EDIT: Back on the topic of Achewood, though, this back-and-forth sandwich shop thing Chris has been doing with the New Yorker writer is truly bizarre.

http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/cartoonlounge/2009/01/the-duel-part-2-2.html

Chris' usage of the English language really is one of the major factors of his humor. I recently hung two of the framed strips in my room, and people just look confused when they read them. I get a perverse pleasure out of that.
