Title: Shit weather
Post by: Brolan on September 02, 2019, 07:41:51 AM
Dorian is trying to erase the Bahamas from existence.  It’s stalled over the islands going 1-2 miles an hour with winds in excess of 165.

I can’t imagine what is like to be caught under a screaming hell like that for 6 hours.  I think it could drive you insane.  Damage and loss of life will be extreme.

If only we'd listened to Trump and nuked it before this could happen.

I'm just really glad climate change doesn't exist oops exists, but is a natural phenomenon oops is a plot by the liberal media to take our guns and meat.

No, no, no, *before* it was a plot by the liberal media to take our guns and meat, now it's real, but I mean it's gonna happen, so...Whatyagonnado? Why bother?

I had a trip planned to head to the Abacos in October. Now it's like  :ye_gods:

I feel so bad for those people involved. I've seen the video of the guy with 20 foot waves hitting the second floor windows of his house. It's insane down there. As a person who loves cruising, it's just devastating to see a place you visit regularly get obliterated and impact the cool people and places you've met down there.

I think I saw the same video on CNN.  How long does a house stand up to battering by waves until it starts to come apart?  The survivors are in danger down there, I hope we in the US are doing something.

I'm sure there's a palette of paper towels that are getting readied to send down there any day now.

I got caught in St. Maarten in '99 when a hurricane decided to park on top of the island and fuck us for three days. Thought I was gonna die a couple of times.

This is MUCH worse.

Yeah from what I've heard and seen the Abacos are basically rubble. The death toll will go way up once they can actually get to people. I don't see how people could have survived those bulldozer ocean swells and the 220 mph winds, especially in the lower income areas where construction is haphazard at best.

Nothing like mother nature to have a set of tools for basically erasing stuff on the Earth.

Been thru 2 minor hurricanes and the longest I waited thru one was 8 hours for the whole thing to pass, and that was a Cat 1 (sidenote, it gets really fucky when you are in the eye...). I cannot wrap my head around having a cat 5 sit above you for >24h.

I heard it was about 41 hours.  Absolutely insane.  I cannot imagine having to live through that.

NPR just released some aerial photos. It's like a bomb went off on the island. Several houses completely gone. Docks that are essentially toothpicks now. The standing structures are underwater or without roofs.

https://www.npr.org/sections/pictureshow/2019/09/04/757426316/photos-show-hurricane-dorian-damage-in-the-bahamas

The Marsh Harbor Airport is basically gone. There's a lone building standing the rest of the airstrip is either underwater or sand, hard to say.

Unfortunately no real way to direct link to the image, but the above has a pretty crazy Before / After areal shot of Grand Bahamas island.   Like, > Half the island is just straight up underwater / gone.

Walked out in the eye and could see the clear blue sky above and the eye wall surrounding us in every direction. An amazing sight that I'm both happy to relate about and at the same time hope no one else here ever has to live through.

Someone I follow on twitter who was on Abaco talked about grabbing a bunch of still functional cars in the eye and getting the fuck out of his compromised position with a bunch of other survivors while the getting was good. A whole bunch of places they thought would survive got ripped to shreds.

The way that thing  slowed and stopped and crawled, I would not be surprised if most people thought that... Looked like the eye sat open on the island for long enough to actually accommodate doing that, from watching the satellite feeds. But then where the hell else would you go knowing that the other half of the hurricane is still coming to erase anything left standing.

Are there any F13ers affected by Dorian in the Carolinas?

Not directly by my mother-in-law lives along the coast about halfway between Myrtle Beach and Wilmington, so she's in the target zone. Not sure if she's decided to try riding it out or if she'll head to her sister's place further inland.  She far enough from the coast that it might be okay but her neighborhood is full of pine trees that look like toothpicks to me.  Just straight up with some branches at the top.  Those would be the biggest concern in any sustained strong winds.

The NPR story and pictures is just incredible.  I mean, where do you even begin when you're looking at something like this?

And where do you go with all the debris and trash and stuff?  It's just so overwhelming to see and consider.

My only thought about cleaning that up is wishing there was somehow a big enough bulldozer to just push everything into a deep hole and start again. I realize that's very callous but holy shit, I cannot begin to imagine how you could look at the things and places that made up your life pre-hurricane and think anything other than "there's naught fucking left."

Yeah, I guess you just draw a line around where your property begins and ends, and just start shoveling shit.  I mean, there is nothing there to salvage in so many cases.

Rhyssa, I am going to be a bit of a dick and suggest your other half call his mother and tell her to GTFO.  That is, if her area is one of the many where evacuation has been ordered.  People with the means to evacuate when told to do so and then don’t fucking do it deserve whatever happens to them and much more, because they are stealing resources from people who cannot help themselves.  There are places in hell reserved for those assholes.

Feel free to completely ignore what I just wrote, but god damn.

On one of videos I saw two boats had been blow down so far inland that they were blocking a road. Insane.

Oh, I completely agree that she should relocate.  I'm not sure why she's even hesitating about it at all.  He's been in contact with her daily since this all started.  She just went through it not that long ago with whatever the most recent hurricane to hit that area was and she went to her sister's place with a friend.  I don't understand why she's not deciding to leave.

Possibly she feels that if she stays there then Dorian wont hit, but if she leaves off her own free will she is giving permission for her house to be smashed. Fear brings up really irrational thoughts. Your SO should basically order her to GTFO so that she can blame him in her head for her going, and that might get her moving. Ya I know what I'm saying does not make any sense, but its kind of the way some peoples mind works.

On a more somber note. (https://twitter.com/BreakingChesky/status/1169615721577558019)

Gut-wrenching story from doctor at Nassau hospital. Tells me several patients brought here from #Abaco island are trying to refuse treatment.

They’re telling doctors they don’t want to live because their entire families are gone.

The true impact of #Dorian.

Where you have land available to create an impromptu landfill that is pretty much exactly what they do.

The small town a few miles from the one I lived in when I was in high school had an F4 tornado cut through town and destroy about half of it. They dug a pit about 30 feet deep that was about the size of a football field in a corn field outside of town and dumped all the debris in it and covered it up.

Goodbye Dorian, going out to sea now.

Also, fuck you Dorian!   You're like a serial killer where we will be finding the bodies for a long time before we know the full extent of your killing.

Has anyone really said anything about the true estimated number of deaths in the Bahamas?  I mean, certainly it is in the hundreds.  I am sorta bracing to hear that it is even far worse than that.

Title: Re: Shit weather
Post by: HaemishM on September 07, 2019, 08:53:38 AM
I think on Thursday the official number was at 30, but that was based on having had very little access to all the parts of the island as well as just having come out of it. I expect thousands when it's all said and done.

Title: Re: Shit weather
Post by: Chimpy on September 07, 2019, 09:07:21 AM
The PM basically said that the death toll was going to be a lot higher.

I am sure hundreds of people ended up being washed away with how much water and wind was there so they will probably be listed as "missing and presumed dead".

Very grim situation, which makes the antics about the Alabama map even more infuriating.

In literally any other administration in the last 80 years, we would be offering money, food, medicine, and logistical support to the Bahamas. In this one, we can't even help our own fucking citizens in Puerto Rico two years after they were devastated.

Honestly, anyone expecting any real aid to the Bahamas out of the Trump Administration is deluding themselves. He has got what he wanted from a few tweets hiving him good publicity, why the fuck would he now bother with the work of actually getting money out of congress for it? There's TV to watch ffs, nothing more in it for him.

In the meantime Dorian still isnt done.

So few structures even slightly intact. I think maybe there's only one there that looks like a possible repair job as opposed to a tear-down, and even that's not really likely.

Interesting how roads stay somewhat clear sometimes--I think because as the water comes in and then recedes, they form a natural channel for stronger, faster flow.
