Title: Aquaman
Post by: HaemishM on July 21, 2018, 12:36:41 PM
So there's a trailer now (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDkg3h8PCVU).

I'm down. Aquaman was one of the best parts of the Justice League movie.

Could be good. Just don't watch the Shazam trailer after this one unless you want to be depressed for the rest of the day.

til me and trippy have the opposite taste in movies

shazam is almost assuredly going to be the second best DC movie and this looks like a bucket of shit but when you pour it out it just refills with shit

I have no opinion on this but Shazam looked so horrible I was embarrassed for Chuck, that trailer had the second hand cringe of an early episode of the office.

I liked both of them. You motherfuckers are cynical.  :why_so_serious:

I thought the Shazam one seemed promising.

This looked like shit and I'm actually a fan of aquaman  :heartbreak:
On the upside this could just be a really bad trailer and not actually reflect upon the film...right....

Look Shazam is going to be cheesy and you can skip it or not depending on your inclinations but your more likely to watch it from what they teased in the trailer. However aquaman... needs to really sell itself on being more than vehicle of lackluster cgi, bad jokes, and cringe inducing writing and directing. No one would care even out of sheer curiosity if this is even remotely campy.

Okay, i told myself I wasn't going to bother watching the trailer.  I went and did it anyways, and man, I want my two minutes back.  How is this getting made, seriously?  This actually looks worse than the fake Aquaman they were making on Entourage.

edit:  I do kinda want Marvel to make a Namor movie now to show them how to do it right though.

Shazam looks like it'll be fun, this looks like Moist Black Panther ft. Ariel.

Just watched the trailer for this.  Not sure how Schild even got a feeling that this was a shitty attempt at Thor: Ragnarok.  Like, that would be the ONLY way you could do Aquaman, so of course they instead went with serious mc serious CGI fight.  I mean, its got bright colors like all the Thor movies, but that's about it.

Or god help me 'Moist Black Panther'?  Like, Black Panther for the whitest people on the planet is not something I think even DC would dare do.   :ye_gods:

It looks like a fun hot mess with some pretty eye candy in Momoa.  And emo Draco for the bad guy (who doesn't look like eye candy, ftr).

Have to hand it to the writers.  They were almost able to make "able to talk to fish" seem like a cool super power.   :why_so_serious:

By virtue of Holmes & Watson looking like a steaming pile of shit, at least this has a real shot at only being the second worst movie to come out that week.

I mean, James Wan knows how to make some entertaining schlock and Mamoa is charismatic as hell so could end up being fun.

We need some Entourage jokes.

That was a long ass trailer. Might be ok.

It was a weird trailer, really--it was like two whole scenes stitched together with more normal trailery glimpses of stuff. I have to say that I found myself almost bored with the scene where Mera's running on rooftops from Black Manta's goons.

Man I forgot all about Black Manta. He was one of my favorites when I was a little guy. Then GI Joe happened.

But back to the movie... does look fun. But I'll wait.

Saw this on Christmas and enjoyed myself.  It was a matinee and I don't think I would have paid for 3D or a regular showing but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting.  There were parts that I just rolled my eyes at the silliness of the plot but overall, at least the story made some semblance of sense.  I've never seen any of the previous current DC movies so had to remind myself that this came after Justice League, which helped with the whole "wait, everyone knows who he is and where he lives?" confusion for me.

Besides, Jason Mamoa wet without a shirt  :drillf:.  I didn't go in looking for high dramatic acting or anything even close.

I enjoyed aqua man I think my only real complaint such as it is was that you could totally cut all the black manta stuff from the movie and you would have the same film but it would come in around 2 hours instead of going 2.5 hours. The black manta stuff is something they clearly want people to care about but it all comes off as secondary to what is going on in the film.

That was a fun 2 1/2 hours. The glaring weakness was Black Manta. There was scope for a good plot line there somewhere but it just didn't really do it for me.

Temuera Morrison and Nicole Kidman really sold the origin story - the chemistry between them was great and it was nice to see occasional Aussie and Kiwi accents in the film (outside of those two).

10yo daughter and 8yo step-daughter loved it too.

My wife dragged me to this a few nights ago and I was also entertained.  Maybe DC is learning...

For every super hero who ever mocked aquaman for speaking to fishes aint laughing now with the big "fishie" he was chatting up at the end of aquaman.

My favorite part of this was him and Mera kissing so I could hear my daughter sigh in despair. Such a great moment that will be relived for months.  :awesome_for_real:

I'm usually pretty easy but this was crap? Like overly long, boring action scene crap? With bad 90's big budget movie overtones? (wtf with the soundtrack)

Title: Re: Aquaman

I disagree. This was a fun time. Amber Heard and Jason Momoa had good chemistry, the action was pretty good, especially the chase/fight scene in Sicily. The giant battle in the third act was a bit much, but the fight between Aquaman and Ocean Master at the end was decent. Willem Dafoe seemed wasted in a very minor role and it had the DC-style over-saturated colors but it was a fun ride.

Aquaman felt like a big fantasy epic to me, although the Marvel influence, especially Thor Ragnarok, was all over it.  My wife and I both enjoyed the film.

Every time Amber Heard was on screen the only thing I could think of was that she looked exactly like the little mermaid. If she had to have that color hair they could have at least made her outfit not be green scales. It was seriously distracting.

So, how does a horror spin off with none of the main cast sound?

JFC, WHY? There is literally nothing that interesting about that part of the movie that would make a spin-off worthwhile. What would you even call it so that people would know it's supposed to be connected?

Well.. it's WB. They have to find new ways to mess things up now that they've actually managed to put out two movies that didn't suck and might have another couple that don't. There's a rumour they're also looking at doing a Black Canary spin-off.. Y'know, from a movie that hasn't come out yet that has gone out of its way to step on comic book accuracy in dumb ways (a Birds of Prey movie without Batgirl in any form, with Harley Quinn in charge, and a Black Canary that, well, supposedly doesn't know how to fight, unlike her comic book counter-part). Though, to be fair, nothing from the Birds of Prey movie that has been shown looks anything other than garbage, but WB apparently wants to push a female, black super-hero.

So I kind of made the mistake of watching this on the same day as Into the Spiderverse. That said, this wasn't a total disaster. It was bright, fun, action packed, and pretty stupid. But Momoa is really hard to dislike, and he pulled this off well.
