Title: Bumblebee
Post by: Velorath on June 05, 2018, 01:23:29 AM
Trailer for this is up now. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAIX12F6958)

Fortunately, what may likely be the last movie in the current Transformers franchise isn't being helmed by Michael Bay. Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight (who was also lead animator on most, if not all of Laika's movies) is directing this time around, and in addition to being set in the '80's, various interview have suggested that they're going for a bit of an Amblin Entertainment kinda vibe. I've avoided every other Transformers movie, but this one looks fun and charming.

Damn, I always thought this was a joke.

Then I find out it's real.

Ummmm... ok? I mean, it certainly looks better than any of the shit directed by Bay but I'm not sure we ever needed E.T. redone with Transformers who turn into a superhero in a prequel to a run of shitty movies with a nonsensical timeline.

Fuck, that's the same reaction I just had right now after watching it.  Thankfully there's no realistic way I can see it in theaters at all right now though.   :oh_i_see:

Maybe if it was drawn by Shuici Shugeno.

New trailer once again and.... Jings.  It actually looks like we might have the real thing here.

Fucking Hell. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcwmDAYt22k)

As a fan of the classics, that looks 100000% better than the summ total of every single previous Transformers movie combined.  Like, someone FINALLY pulled their heads out of their asses and made a movie that has more actual "transformers" to it than just the freaking name.

Indeed.  The friendship looks like it might be handled properly as well.

It might end up being the best LA TF we'll get.

Fuck Bay.

I'm still not entirely sure of the necessity of this movie, but yes, it looks a billion times better than anything Bay did. The combat at the end while the kid is running in the foreground is just great, especially in comparison to the Bay action scenes.

I know its going to be a minuscule part of the movie but the Cybertron stuff totally sold me. Shockwave? Soundwave and Ravage? fuck yes, please.

Also, Triangular Decepticon fliers which is a total call-back to the original cartoon.

There was even one of the cone head jets in the background.

Welp, at least these guys know what they're doing unlike Bay.

I know.  I think that entire combat sequence had more clearly distinguishable robot on robot action than the entirety of the first movie.  You could easily tell what was going on, instead of trying to make sense of two giant piles of scrap metal hatefucking each other.

My kids (5 and 3) have been watching the original cartoons and love the Transformers. I decided to show them the first Bay movie. They loved it for the special effects but I hated how the transformers looked just like every one else did at the time.

This looks much better.

I pray to god that this successful enough to pull this franchise away from M Bay. Because this was really good on all levels.

Just the fact that you could instantly identify every single two second cameo G1 transformer they showed is a win.

Kinda funny that in the day of anime, I'd rather not have to read subtitles to know who my giant robots are.

Ironically the one that looked the least like their G1 cartoon was bumblebee.

That's how you do a transformers movie. That was sublime. I really, really liked that. Really.

Edit :  it's the next day and Bumblebee is STILL the best movie I've seen this year.  Also, the second best movie IN a year.  (Spiderverse pipped it marginally).

I mean, damn, it's a fine, fine movie and all of you need to go and then go again and then go again so that they do MORE and never, ever, ever let Bay near a Transformers movie ever again.

This has thankfully been officially branded a reboot. They also announced a "war for cybertron" triliogy coming to netflix next year, which i assume is related.

Watched this on a plane, which is my habit for films I am marginal about.  Good movie. 10x more an 80s movie than Captain Marvel was a 90s movie. As a devotee of the genre there were a lot of good touches for the era beyond the obvious.  The whole structure of it was very 80s and was steeped in tropes.

I liked that in the action you could tell what the fuck was actually happening. Limiting the number of bots was a good choice.

Bee jumping on the beemer with absolute glee was my favorite part.
