Title: Battle Royale games
Post by: Shannow on February 22, 2018, 07:44:13 AM
(Instead of starting a new thread for PUBG and every other game coming out with this mode figured I might start this thread)

Hi, my name is Shannow and I'm a PUBG addict. Fortnite blows.

Lotta people getting onboard this game mode.  Paladins has a 400 person mode  (https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2018/02/21/paladins-battlegrounds-open-beta/)

Anyone else playing PUBG? I use a discord channel to regularly do 4 man drops each night. Even if we suck the hilarity of our deaths and fun with vehicles is enough to keep me coming back each night.

I'm still kind of amazed Paladins made it to release. It wasn't bad but it had nothing to recommend it over say Overwatch, which at least had the Blizzard name and characters. The horse thing was a really weak point of difference.

I personally love PubG, but quit playing after 300+ hours since I still sucked.  I don't think I'm built for games like that.

I accept that I suck but enjoy that every game is different, that occasionally I get a chicken dinner out of a squad match (The right people, the right drop, the right circle). The hilarity that is vehicle travel (I rolled the squad jeep last night and we slid down a hill on our side for a good 10 seconds into the zone...Mission accomplished!) and the urge of looting just one. more. house. (The way that every squad member loots a tactical stock just in case they find an M4.. :awesome_for_real:).

Considering the amount of failure that you experience in this game, it SHOULDN'T be so popular.

Hi-Rez is known for releasing mediocre to passable shooters and then abandoning them for a new shiny, with Smite being the only exception.

The horse thing is, I think, a holdover from the closed beta, when horses were summonable mounts (like in Heroes of the Storm) and maps were larger, more open fields with bases on either end.  I haven't played in a while, but last I saw, the only point I could see for horses was that they were purchaseable cosmetics, and if they removed them from the game they really didn't have any equivalent alternative to compensate their owners with.

The battle royale thing sounded to me like it might be a good move, anything to move away from Overwatch at this point... but looking in to it, it looks like it is following right on the heels of a huge pay-to-win patch that ravamped the entire card system (for like the tenth time).  So, now, you can buy loot boxes off the store that contain random cards that you need to power up your character, AND those cards now have levels, which you level up by finding duplicate cards.  Since there are tons of cards, and each of them is unique for each character, that means that if there's a particular card you want, you need to buy a small truckload of lootboxes in order to not just find the card, but to find enough duplicates randomly to level it up.  So, what does this mean for a battle royale mode, where you are finding your loot randomly?  Well, it's not actually random, the cards you find are the cards you own, meaning if two people randomly find the same card, the one who has leveled it up more by buying more loot boxes will be objectively more powerful.

So that's kind of dampened my enthusiasm a bit.

Edit: did a bit more digging and it looks like this is changing.  The card system is being changed back and the battle royale mode is being split out in to it's own thing, a separate client and all.

Pretty much how I feel, didn't like the gameplay or the building aspect of Fortnite.  Playing PUBG on xbox and it's pretty fun and very frustrating.  Mostly doing solos but get in a random group every now and then.

I tried really hard to get into PUBG.  At first it seemed really cool, and I really wanted to like it.  But after awhile, I wasn't really having fun at the end of the day I realized.  Almost all matches had me wonder around the woods looting things for 20 minutes till I got head shot from across the map by somebody I didn't see.  And when I did engage in combat, I'd empty my clip into a guy and then he'd promptly 1-2 shot me.  I'm sure I suck, but the actually gun and combat mechanics of the game feel really weird and unresponsive.  Combat itself just isn't as fun as other shooters.

Anyways, I can see why people like it, but I just had to walk away.  I'll wait till somebody makes a better version of it.

Edit:  Mainly, I'm amazed it took this damn long for the game to get made.  From the moment I first read the book Battle Royal, I thought: "Wow, you could make a great multiplayer game out of this!"  How is it only now somebody ripped off the original concept!?

Technology I'd say. An engine that can support 100 ppl, plus be large enough to spread them out over a map big enough to give space to enjoy the loot part of the game. PUBG is still patching regularly for performance.

You're right Teleku this game has no right to be enjoyable but it weirdly is while being incredibly frustrating.

PUBG on the Xbox? uggh. I don't drop in randoms anymore (mainly because 90% of those that do are non-english speakers) so use a discord server to find like-minded masochists. Not sure what facilities XBOX has for that.

The game is currently a buggy, hacker-overrun mess. Once they manage to clean it up (and stop focusing on releasing more crates, ha), it should become a decent game. Also, play with friends. I generally don't play solo, simply because the games becomes an rng clusterfuck. Playing with friends however, is a significantly better experience, even if you do get killed by hackers on a regular basis.

Groups are definitely the way to go. I try a solo every so often , like throwing a few bucks on a number on roulette at the casino.

Played Fortnite again with my daughter last night. The combat is easier than PUBG and maybe that's what people like but the whole 'build a huge base at the endgame' mechanic is just downright crap. Changes the whole mechanic of the game right when you think you might win a round.

It's one thing to just be good at killing. Fortnite requires you to learn to build too. It's the endgame, and mid-game of Fortnite. The streams I watch I'm basically in awe of both aspects. Cause I suck at both.

If your playing pubg try the new 4x4 map in test right now.  Lotta crazy fun. You can also spectate the player who killed you. Then the player who killed them etc etc.

The new jungle map looks like a big improvement.  Smaller map and faster circles will drive the game to a faster conclusion.  PubG needed less camping.

A lot more loot.
Circle that loads before you jump.
Draws quicker but moves slower.  You can outrun it.

Lotta love for it today.

Have you seen the new pubg war mode? Standard FPS style match in a small, predefined area with respawns.  First person/team/squad to a set number of kills wins.   Great way to train shooting.

It's custom mode only (why Bluehole why??) but watched a stream of it, looks like a lot of fun. New map, new game mode and an event all this week. They are at least trying to compete.

A new contender (or not) appears.  Radical Heights, made by the same company that shit the bed with Lawbreakers, is a new BR game that just went into early access today.

Game is going to need some SERIOUS adjusting.  Gun balance is pretty laughable so far.  Several streamers think this may be an entirely different game at release, so may be worth waiting on.

Watched a stream of Radical Heights. Seemed to have a pretty good fun factor to it.

Vehicles may be the best of PuBG (getting serious air in a Combi van and freaking the fuck out of your teammates never gets old) so they got that right.

I have a love/hate relationship with vehicles in pubg.  I love being able to jump a motorcycle onto the roof of a building.  I hate when I get out of a vehicle 1 nanosecond before coming to a complete stop and dying because I ran myself over.

PubG just put out a major update on the test server.  The blue zone is going to move a lot slower, but the gaps between circles is greatly reduced.

Yeah, that right there is why I stopped ever going near vehicals when I was playing.
