This is first-rate royalist porn (this colonial is feeling very dirty and very good) with top notch acting, production values and writing. John Lithgow was phenomenal in the first season. I'm sure some of the details have been embellished but a good portion of the events portrayed are accurate from an outsiders point of view. They also aren't flattering to the people involved at all times either.
