Title: IF YOU SEE THIS YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE
Post by: Trippy on May 15, 2017, 08:10:05 PM
\o/

Edit: Google is still caching the old IP addresses so things will be a bit weird for a while. You may also need to log in again even you can get here cause things are configured by IP rather than name until Google updates itself.

It doesn't seem to remember the "stay logged in" setting. It's made me log in three times tonight since the changeover.

I had that at first, and Chrome warned me that the login was not secure.

After a hard refresh, I was already logged in and have stayed logged in on several visits since.

Yeah it's from the awkward DNS switch. Once that stabilizes it should go away if you are on 'forums.f13.net'. 'f13.net' also will work to reach the forums but that may mess up the cookie.

These changes shall not stand!  Think of the children!

(Seriously though, some of the buttons seem to be missing in the white/blue theme).

This is doing weird shit for me, but I'll wait until I can be sure it's not ME to moan.

(DNS seems to be still a little wonky and it don't even work on my phone anymore.)

Title: Re: IF YOU SEE THIS YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE
Post by: Jeff Kelly on May 17, 2017, 01:53:43 AM
reaching f13 is still very wonky.

On my phone: impossible. I only get DNS resolution errors "Server not found"
On PC 80% of the time it works all the time
Using f13.net works on my phone (although forum landing page shows up) but all links direct to forums.f13.net which doesn't work. So no f13.net on the loogo.

Yeah it looks like the order in which rows are retrieved without an explicit sort order on this server's version of MySQL is different than the previous server's.

We don't have an SSL cert yet. That browser warning is more about the page having mixed hostname content*. If 'forums.f13.net' is working for your DNS use that one instead of 'f13.net'.

* Some combination of 'http://f13.net/', 'http://forums.f13.net/' and 'http://192.169.250.157/' content

Opposite problem here.  I can't access the site from my home network.  My phone can reach it normally, but only when I'm not home / using my wifi.

Yeah there's still some DNS wonkiness going on. Wednesday I was no longer able to access the site from home but Thursday it was fine again. I blame Google.

Well now it's back to "server not found" again.

Could you please kick your ISP. They obviously don't know how to DNS. Also f13.net is not reachable via IPv6 (tracert -6) which is something that should not happen in 2017. Kick your ISP for that too.

After about two weeks access to f13 is still very flaky. I can now access the site from all of my devices and both from my home internet and mobile internet. The site is inaccessible for hours each day though because of dns errors or server unreachable errors. Drop outs range from a few minutes to several hours and then everything seems to work again.

Sometimes access drops out literally in the middle of browsing or posting.

I get the "server not found" error on my iPhone when using cell data but not at home using wifi.  Rebooting the iPhone usually clears it up, but not always.

Yeah still haven't figured out why it's happening yet. When can get back on my regular comp I'll try increasing the DNS TTL which may make the problem occur less frequently.

Title: Re: IF YOU SEE THIS YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE
Post by: calapine on May 28, 2017, 01:33:14 PM
If it helps:

- It's definitely a DNS issue, as http://192.169.250.157/ always works
- It seems provider depended, the outages only happen my desktop connection, not with the mobile phone.

Title: Re: IF YOU SEE THIS YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE
Post by: Trippy on May 28, 2017, 03:51:49 PM
Which Is confusing  as DNS is served from the same server as the site. My best guess at the moment is Google or similar DNS service still has a few DNS servers with the wrong IP cached that refuse expire.

Title: Re: IF YOU SEE THIS YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE
Post by: Torinak on May 28, 2017, 04:55:05 PM
Is there any caching at the hosting ISP? GoDaddy's "website accelerator" that may need to be kicked or reset manually?

Is there any unusually large TTL set for the current DNS record, or was there in the past?

Is the apparent absence of an Start of Authority record (https://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=a%3awww.f13.net&run=toolpage#) causing problems?

For people who are having problems, what DNS server is being used? Things look OK when I use Comcast's (75.75.75.75) or Google's (8.8.8.8) DNS servers.

I'm with T-Mobile Germany and Telekom Germany (same company) for mobile and landline internet. They use their own DNS servers but are rock solid and reliable most of the time. Didn't have any problems with them for over a decade.

I get exactly the opposite. WiFi won't find it, cellular will. Very weird.

I've not had DNS issues from my desktop. I had a case yesterday when using it from my phone, where forums.f3.net did not resolve briefly.

But it still refuses to remember me being logged in, even with the "forever" option set.

I changed some stuff in our DNS that may have been causing the issue. The changes, if they do fix the problem, should take effect for most people within 24 hours but some DNS resolvers, especially those used by cellular devices, don't honor TTLs so those may take longer.

This is nothing serious like DNS problems, but something which has changed is that opening a page on f13 using Firefox now creates a blank white page "flash" briefly before loading the new page. Maybe I'm getting more light-sensitive in my dotage, but repeated darkmode-blindme-darkmode has bugged me enough that I now open everything here in new tabs. I get it on both home & work PCs, Windows 7 & 10. Looks like it doesn't happen in Chrome.

I do have addons installed, but I just restarted in safe mode with them all disabled and the behavior was unchanged. I do have the latest version of 32-bit Firefox (now 53.03) on both machines.

edit: the main ones being Adblock Plus, Flashblock, and Greasemonkey with Anti-Adblock Killer script
edit 2: I manually disabled all three plugins as well as all add-ons and no change

Occurs on Ubuntu as well, with Firefox 53.0.3 but not 49.0. No plugins or wacky settings since FF isn't my usual browser. It's like it's clearing the whole display before rendering the new page.

TIL that there is an Anti-Adblock Killer script for Greasemonkey....

As for my machines, I have one that is stubbornly requiring a login every visit -- but it's honestly not enough of a hassle for me to even try to troubleshoot yet.

I kinda figured out the white flash on Firefox.  One of the javascripts on the site is loading about:blank for some reason prior to loading the rest of the page.  I want to say its the jquery-1.7.0.min.js file, but I know jack about javascript and can't puzzle out how it is loading about:blank.

This was tested by changing my about:blank background color to bright green and reloading this site.  The white flash became bright green.
