Title: Crossing Europe 2017 film festival - film recommendations Post by: calapine on April 27, 2017, 05:45:05 PM The 14th Crossing Europe (https://www.crossingeurope.at/en.html) film festival is currently running in Linz. I have a festival pass and binge-watching 3 films per day.
116 films in total, which is a bit much, so I'll only talk about the once I actually watched. (Makes sense, non?) So the first film *sips wine* (https://i.imgur.com/KUwF68H.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/BjniB4a.png) The Title is "Quit staring at my plate" which is a Croatian saying meaning "Mind your own business" The film is less "seedy" than the synopsis suggest, so don't go watching it for that. Although, there is a hot gangbang sex scene, that is devoid of any porn ascetic, but also avoids creating the impression that she is "being taken advantage off" or any moral cue by her getting pregnant or getting an STD. The latter two points were explicitly mentioned by the regisseur in the after-film-Q&A talk (she was in the cinema). The film is also not a "Cinderella story". The regisseur mentioned she wanted to avoid a plot in which a character throws off all shackles and totally changes, as that is not what people usually do in real life. (That was an answer to a question of mine to her, actually. *proud*) That is also shown in the way she partially begins to mirror her fathers behavior towards the mother and son. She isn't a innocent girl, but a product of her upbringing. It's an independent film in the sense that it was literally made on film school budget, but not an "independent film" in any sense of "We need to be arty!" or containing some sort of (feminist) moral message. It's totally unpretentious. Interestingly the only non-professional actor in it is the main actress, she is an architect in real life. Which I would have never guessed from her performance. The rest of the family are actually (locally of course) well known actors. The clausthorpyh of a family living in a 2 room apparment is shown nicley as well, it was filmed in an actual flat, not a studio. Overall it's a nice film, small scope, quite a bit of humor, not too long (no LOTR) and very relatable. I found her film character more attractive than the real Mijo Petricevic. But yes, styling can change soo much.
