I was asked recently who my favorite comedian of all time was.  It was a tie between Gene Wilder and Steve Martin.

He made the world a happier place.  He will be missed.

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory was one of my favorite movies growing up and all of his work with Mel Brooks was great. Sad to see him gone.

complications from Alzheimer’s disease

Much as I hate to say it, in this case it was probably for the best that he went sooner rather than later.

It sucks having a disease like that, one where there is no cure and the outcome is always death.  My father has ALS and I've had to watch him slowly deteriorate the past 3 years.  Add in the stroke he had a few months ago that has robbed him of his mind and memories and I know that he might be better off just passing away in his sleep.

The statement from his nephew is heartbreaking as it describes his last moments. He just recounted it on NPR and it was awful and beautiful at the same time.

RIP, Gene. You've gone with other greats this year.

Strangely enough, the first movie I saw with him was Stir Crazy... then Young Frankenstein. He had an amazing dynamic with Pryor for some reason. Comedy greats and all I guess.

The sad thing is that pretty much all the movies he is now famous for - Young Frankenstien, Willy Wonka, The Producers, were absolute bombs at the box office. Its when they came out on TV that people noticed that they were funny as hell, but he didn't much money from them as a result. Blazing saddles got mixed critical reviews but did great at the box office.

Fantastic comedian. He will be missed.

This is one of my favourite scenes from the one and only time I saw him on the big screen.

Hold up there Sir T. Young Frankenstien was a mega hit, with near 90 million gross compared to a less than three million budget.

Surprisingly to me, IMDB agrees with you on Willy Wonka, listing only a four million gross on a three million budget. It also says it only played on five screens(!?). That can't be right. Maybe that's only the opening weekend or something.

I actually remember there was a *lot* of hoopla over the movie, and everybody seemed to be talking about it when it came out. I didn't get to go see it at the drive-in though (assuming it played there), but had to wait for it on TV.

But back to Young Frankenstien, if you haven't you should check out the deleted scenes and bloopers on the DVD. Apparently, Gene got a little real life flustered in a whole bunch of the scenes where Terri Garr was flirting with him (intellectual conversation!) and kept flubbing his lines. It's pretty damn cute and Terri Garr was never sexier (roll the hay! roll in the hay!).

:heartbreak:

Good GOD but Terri Garr was crazy hot in that movie. Also, it was truly one of the greatest comedies ever created. "ABBY NORMAL!"

I remember a radio interview with Wilder (around the time the remake came out) talking about how "Wonka" and "the Producers" were dismal failures at the box offfice, yet a year after it came out everyone was Wonka mad as they saw it on TV. I must have gotten Young Frankenstein thrown in with them in my head. Mea Culpa.

I might take this opportunity to pick up Frankenstein as they will probably have boxed sets on Amazon.

The Producers was Brooks' first film, and actually met with a lot of bad reviews (though most of the critics like Wilder). It took a while to gain its reputation, but then, it was also made for almost nothing, so it wasn't really a bomb in the conventional sense.

Willy Wonka definitely didn't make a lot of money on its first release, but it also wasn't necessarily expected to be a big hit--Roald Dahl was still somewhat controversial as a children's author (which is entirely the way he wanted it). It was re-released theatrically and did pretty well in its second go-round.

Young Frankenstein was definitely a huge hit--I think maybe Brooks' biggest.

I would guess that Wilder's most commercially successful films were Silver Streak and Stir Crazy, though. But Young Frankenstein is definitely another of his hits. Blazing Saddles was also a big hit at initial release.

Kind of sad she developed MS AND had a brain aneurysm, which is why we haven't seen her anything for about 10 years.  I always thought she was pretty funny and very attractive even into her mid to late 40's.

Pretty cool supercut of how great Wilder was with the comedic pause

To me, Wilder will always be known as one of the most anti-racism actor-comedians in history.  That goes without saying.  His work on BlazingSaddles and moreso with Pryor later, are veritable bastions in that particular fight.  I mean, they teach the shit in civil rights (and likely black history) studies.   Things were very different back then.  And you'd be a fool to think it didn't effect his career negatively (aside from his wife dying).

? I don't think it did affect it negatively, particularly. He made some odd choices after Young Frankenstein and directed a pretty crappy film but I don't ever recall him implying that the movies with Pryor had any real impact on his career. What he did say a bit later on was that he simply got tired of acting and in particular disliked having become pigeonholed as a comedic actor. I think his not-very-successful TV series kind of finished off his desire to do more.
