Title: Do It Again/Do It Right: Games We Want, 2016
Post by: Khaldun on June 25, 2016, 04:11:16 PM
I'm thinking lately about game concepts that I have a serious desire to see somebody do again (better) or somebody to do right at last (after the last nTH number of fuck ups).

I'll start: I'd love a contemporary version of Roller Coaster Tycoon, and I'd love a version of The Movies that did everything that the original did right but way better, especially in terms of using it to make fun little machinima that could be shared.

I'd like a new minecraft that didn't try to be minecraft plus this other shitty thing we put in. Even just a Microsofted branch with real mod support, a fully modded old creaky Java minecraft is amazing and better than every attempt to make a minecraft clone...but it's old creaky java made by fans and thus buggy and devs disappear into the night regularly.

Also, a true Fall From Heaven game  :drillf:

Hmm, you mean "games related to existing games that haven't actually been made yet", right?

- Star Control 2 Sequel That Is Not Terrible
- Arcanum Sequel Without The Suck
- Wizardry 9 That Actually Moves The Dungeon Crawler Genre Forward Instead Of Recycling Wizardry 1 Again, Thanks Japan

For "existing games that aren't yet available on pc for whatever reason" I can only think of Demon's Souls atm. Or going by the SC2 thing, an updated version of UQM with some extras... and achievements / trading cards, obv.  :awesome_for_real:

I'd kill for a Movies game/machinima creator where both facets of it weren't half-assed and quickly abandoned. Also, a graphically updated version of Railroad Tycoon, Football Manager with EA Sports-style FIFA presentation for the game engine, and something similar to that for Rugby, Baseball and NFL. Or fuck it, a new version of NFL 2k3.

'Archon' and 'Mail Order Monsters'.

To run with Zetor's dream, 'Mail Order Monsters' would be especially cool as a FPS/OverWatch/TF2 type game.  Oh wait, no it wouldn't, because everyone would just play the flavor-of-the-month build.

Also, I'd like to see the creature AI from 'Black and White' in a game where you focused on training it to do stuff instead of focusing on building and defending a city.  I'm also sure that no one else really wants this.

A new single player mech game would be nice, since Mechwarrior Mercenaries 4 came out in 2002.

I still want a space game that doesn't suck. Elite Dangerous with a actual game. Star Citizen that's real. No Man's Sky that is less than 92% hype.

Plus what Sky said about Minecraft :)

Dwarf Kingdom with graphics, and a control scheme that doesn't have an entry in the DSM-5
Suikoden
Shadow of the Horned Rat
Chaos Gate

I'd like to see CD Projekt's Cyberpunk 2077 actually get finished, and not turn out completely shit.

Also, what Sky said.

'Archon'

It keeps getting remade and never quite captures the awesome.

Archon Ultra (original team, even, in 94)
Unholy War (PS1, 1998, Toys for Bob -- so, at least one original team member)
Wrath Unleashed (PS2, The Collective, 2004)
Archon Classic (2010, most current version, on Steam here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/65400/)

I'm guessing you mean Dwarf Fortress. I'm not sure I want Dwarf Fortress that isn't Dwarf Fortress.

I'd like to see an actual sequel to Shadow Hearts: Covenant and not that thing that passed as SH3.
I want a Star Wars: Rebellion that doesn't suck.
I'd like to see System Shock 3, but with Ken Levine kept as far away as possible.
I want another Fallout: Tactics or maybe just another isometric Fallout.  And no, not Wasteland 2 doesn't count.
A follow up to Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries would be nice.

I'd like giant meteor to hit all of the Kickstarter nostalgia farmers so that competent studios actually work on these and not Bryan Fargo and his brand new Unity license.

Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (2001)

Yes to a lot of these.

Spore they can actually just keep the creator as-is, it's still pretty brilliant. Just make a different, actual game to plug it into.

Independence War redone like the original game. I-War 2 was good and I played the shit out of it, but it wasn't a patch on the original game. That felt like you were a actually piloting a starship.

Warcraft 4, done in Total War Rome 1 style.

An updated Mount and Blade with easier Mod options, victory conditions, better performance.

I would like for a procedurally generated mmo world that we can actually change, build, attack, resources, etc using the principles of SWG crafting. With seasonal resets and long term characters.

A baseball manager game that doesn't suck balls.

Oh gawd, how could I forget about Freedom Force. Hey, Levine, how about this -- you drop your current pet project(s), get a team together for Freedom Force 2, make the game worthy of the title, and all your sins shall be forgiven.

Well, we ARE getting Battletech (http://battletechgame.com/)...

As for Fallout, lots of dudes tried making Fallout-style games recently, but none of them really hit the spot IMO. Closest is Underrail, but the story/writing has plenty of eurojank (the character / combat systems are surprisingly good though). Age of Decadence is the other way around: good writing and plot, but missing the exploration aspect, and character building is kind of a metagame-heavy 'eh'.

e: oh yeah, another thing -- Shandalar (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic:_The_Gathering_(1997_video_game)) 2016 edition, plz. No, Hex PVE is not it.

Oooh. *Hopes*.

I can't figure out quite why I liked Independence War and just felt utterly cold if weirdly appreciative about E:D.

They are worlds apart as games. I-War had an actual game, characters, story, an engaging universe and Newtonian physics. The combat and flight in I-War is still unique and innovative feeling. E:D has a sterile universe populated by robots, no real variation between planets and systems, a non-Newtonian (i.e. completely unbelievable) flight engine and no story or characters of any worth.

Maybe we can remap the controls in this one...

I'm going to throw some money at these guys, but do they really need 1.7 million to have stuff like limb dismemberment? Or even 900 grand for the base game. Seems kind of steep.

900 grand is not a lot of money anymore. Fucking crazy, but salaries, health care, etc, adds up quick.

I hope they kick ass with it, but I don't back video games on KS anymore.

Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen

Was anything ever released that was even close to this? (Other than the N64 one.)

I put so many hours into this on SNES and I don't know if I've ever seen anything similar in all the years since.  Sure you can find plenty of games that have a similar combat system, or similar leveling system, or alignment system, etc. but nothing to my knowledge that comes close to the whole package.

Soul Nomad on PS2 was sort of similar, except the maps were grid based; it's also a NIS game so there was a good deal more silliness. It lacked the ALI/CHA/Reputation morality system too.

I've still never played the N64 one; might be time to acquire an emulator.

Just a few off the top of my head-

Darklands
AutoDuel/Car Wars
Racing Destruction Set
Mail Order Monsters
6 Gun Shootout
A decent PC baseball game (Earl Weaver Baseball?)
ToEE and other classic AD&D modules done correctly
Master Of Magic (Planar Conquest is decent, but it could be a lot better)
Seven Cities of Gold/Heart of Africa (a good exploration game)
Another update to Pirates!
Adventure Construction Set
Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain
An old fashioned dungeon crawler- Bard's Tale, Wizardry, etc
Silent Hunter or Red Storm Rising, or another good sub game
Wizard's Crown with updated graphics and UI

Seven Cities of Gold has a fun mechanic even if you don't want to do the setting--a hex-based procedurally generated map that reveals one hex at a time through movement, etc.--somebody could do something brilliant with that basic idea but contemporary tools and polish.

You know what game I really loved the music and mood for, but it was hopelessly broken, was the old 4x Emperor of the Fading Suns. I tried some of the fan patches way back and they were good but didn't really make it fully functional. Would love an updated version.

That was a fun one. But just whenever a game started to get interesting, the bugs would corrupt the game and that'd be it. A straight remake with bug fixes would be enough for me; any modern quality-of-life improvements would be gravy.

If anything, my problem with the japanese dungeon crawlers has been that they're TOO oldschool, ie. they use mechanics straight out of 1980 for whatever weird cargo-cult reason. Whenever they try to innovate, it's either a move towards JRPGs with smaller encounters and grindy character development (cf. EO), or results in casualized nonsense with super-streamlined mechanics where you basically hold down one button for 99% of the combats in the game (cf. Demon Gaze). The genre needs an evolutionary leap, and the last time that happened was in 2001 with Wizardry 8. /sadf

A genuinely new, updated version of Jagged Alliance would be great--keep the personalities!

Was Darklands the excessively EuroJank one from Germany?

I think I know which game you're talking about. But for the life of me I can't remember the name.

Oh come on assholes, you can get it on steam now.  I think this is before the era where we started calling shit Eurojank. :-P

To this date it has one of the most original takes on fantasy RPG's I've ever seen.  The mechanics and setting were amazing.  I'd like to think a dedicated team could take what they started and do something amazing.  But most likely not.

I don't think that's the game he's talking about. There was a remake about 4-6 years back that epitomized Eurojank. Pretty sure Sky loved it. Thought we had a thread about it, but couldn't find it.

DRAKENSANG!

I could have sworn that Gothic and Risen were the ones Sky usually went on about.  I've said good things about Drakensang in the past, although maybe not here.   I personally think the second one no one likely knows exists outdid the various Dragon Age games.  It was pretty light on the jank, although it was still burdened by the dark eye rules set.

edit:  relevant to the steam sales thread since they're also both really cheap right now, I could have sworn they'd gotten delisted at some point.

Total Annihilation.
Been redone many times, none of them have really captured the original feel. But except for Supreme Commander, none had a decent budget, either. I've been playing Ashes of the Singularity, it's about the closest I have found.

I like Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance, it's my favorite newer Total Annihilation.  I've got Ashes of the Singularity on my wishlist, I'll probably get it at some point.

Gold Box games.

Was everything from Black Isle not enough? If not, what do you think that shit would even look like today.

On that note:
Age of Empires II.

Why those guys at Firaxis *didn't* do Beyond Earth as Alpha Centauri 2 is profoundly puzzling to me. Why not, guys? Why farm it out to the interns and just do a mod of Civ 5? If it had really been Alpha Centauri 2, man...

Just a few off the top of my head-

Darklands
AutoDuel/Car Wars
Racing Destruction Set
Mail Order Monsters
6 Gun Shootout
A decent PC baseball game (Earl Weaver Baseball?)
ToEE and other classic AD&D modules done correctly
Master Of Magic (Planar Conquest is decent, but it could be a lot better)
Seven Cities of Gold/Heart of Africa (a good exploration game)
Another update to Pirates!
Adventure Construction Set
Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain
An old fashioned dungeon crawler- Bard's Tale, Wizardry, etc
Silent Hunter or Red Storm Rising, or another good sub game
Wizard's Crown with updated graphics and UI

The top of your head has a neckbeard. Also, there has been NO shortage of old fashioned dungeon crawlers (immediately springing to mind - Darkest Dungeon, Stranger of Sword City, both Legends of Grimrock, all the Etrian shit).

Why do you think I shave my head
I have had Darkest Dungeon on my Steam wishlist for a while... now that I am unemployed it may be time to pick it up!

I would really like a fun sub game.

There was or is a ww2 sub sim but its really boring. You guess where the ship is gonna go, you get in position and you wait until its in range. And in ww2 us  torpedoes are 30% at best , there really crap. I am a ex submarine sailor. I have no idea about combat . But if your assigned to a ship that cannot be detected you end up doing interesting things.

I've like them to redo Star Wars Rebellion with a UI that didn't suck.

Yes, you can. And I'll be damned if I can read the font anymore. :/
