Post by: apocrypha on June 04, 2016, 08:42:12 AM
A rumoured leak (http://www.vinereport.com/article/steam-summer-sale-2016-start-date-leak-reveals-late-june-date/11222.htm) claims that this years sale starts in just under 3 weeks time. Unconfirmed so far.

Sweet!  Now I can look forward to buying....oh wait, nothing.  These sales have lost all their appeal to me.  Either I already have the games I want, or don't have time for them.  And also the fact that there are 40 trillion other sales happening all the time.

Every year this sale comes up.  Every year I buy 3-4 games.  Every year these 3-4 games sit unplayed due to apathy.

I think I'm going to opt out as well.

I agree about all other sale, especially since steam is fairly expensive for europeans. I have a few games I'm interested in but I don't expect those games to be cheap enough. Maybe I will buy helldivers together with a friend but that's probably it.

......but we all know you can't buy just one game on a steam sale, it has to be at least 3, probably 5 but that's it.....really

When steam sales were new it seemed like a lot of things were just "worth having" for 5 bucks. Now I've got a couple hundred games in my steam library many of which I have never bothered installing, let alone playing for more than 5 minutes.  Steam sales are really only worth it not if there is a particular game you've been waiting to buy but didn't want at full price. I've pretty much entirely given up on games that just seem worth buying for cheap because why not. It turns out the why not is that I will literally never play it.

There are a few things I might snag. I do tend to at least get an hour or two out of a couple impulse games from every sale, so it's still worth it to peruse for me.

That said, I've pre-ordered two games (Mafia 3 and Civ 6), so my gaming budget it already tight.

Also, I tend to play long and/or repeatable games (GTA V, Civ V, Minecraft). And of course I have a few from the winter sale I really want to put a few hours into (Dex, Eisenwald).

There are only a few I'm looking for that I haven't bought somewhere else. Getting rid of Flash/daily deal sales really killed the Steam Sale fun for me. I enjoyed checking into Steam every 8 hours to see what was new, even if I didn't buy anything.

The only games I buy on Steam sales are items that came out between the last Steam sale and the next one that I thought were too high for the price. Like that Dragon Quest / Dynasty Warriors mashup.

Same here; anyway, got most of the stuff I was interested in on GOG (sale ends in 13-14 hours) :

- System Shock 1 enhanced edition (played it for an hour and was immersed like it's 1994 all over again)
- Darkest Dungeon (argh)
- The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (redux)
- Underrail (awesome Fallout style CRPG)
- Free copy of Spelunky, Gabriel Knight 20th anniversary edition and Dreamfall Chapters (via the XP/badges minigame)

Might end it tomorrow with Grim Dawn.

Regarding Steam, I might purchase some Fallout 4 DLC and, just maybe, the Dying Light Enhanced Edition if it gets a 50% discount (on GOG it's currently 40%...doubt it will go higher than 50 on Steam)

Is PoE worth $18? I hear a lot of conflicting information about the quality of the title.

Otherwise at the current prices on wishlist items, I have an eye on MGSV, Undertale, The Long Dark, and maybe some of the TellTale offerings.

If you have not played it and want to try a TellTale game, The Wolf Among Us is VERY good.  Easily the best of anything they've done.  Inspired me to read the comics it was based off of, which I found out are way the hell worst than the TellTale video game.

The people who love PoE are super tolerant to unbelievably hacky if not awful graphics. It is dreadful looking. Offensively bad.

Was sorely tempted by that one (and the bundle with Tomb Raider), but sticking to my initial idea of getting the Assassin's Creeds I've been eyeing. And some of the Rocksmith DLC, of course!

Yeah, this.  I bought PoE for super cheap somewhere, and after installing it I almost thought I had accidentally bought an older original edition from 1998 or something.  It looks rotten and the whole experience was soured.

Yea, the animations, the textures, the effects - all garbage. You really really have to love the spreadsheet part of Diablo to enjoy it to the full extent. I give them props for what they did, they just happened to do a shitty job on everything that matters to me, other than the loot.

Title: Re: Steam Summer Sale 2016 - June 23rd (unconfirmed)
Post by: Malakili on June 24, 2016, 10:49:02 AM
It was the animations I hadn't the hardest time with in PoE. Diablo 2 felt substantially more fluid with sprites just due to the great animations. They got the loot right, but actually playing the game is incredibly difficult for me. It's one of the reasons Diablo 3 has always been better than PoE to me, even pre-Reaper of Souls.

I think you're talking about two different PoEs (path of exile vs pillars of eternity), though the graphics comment may or may not apply to both  :why_so_serious:

Oh right, Pillars of Eternity is also PoE

lol

Yeah, looks garbage also. Plays better than Path of Exile though. Story couldn't get more remotely interested in continuing. The first 10 minutes of PS: Torment was better than 4 hours of Pillars.

Loved poe, its the mix of story, micromanaging combat with a D&D'ish progression system. Its the game I wish dragon age inquisition would have been.

Finally accepted that The Witcher 3 is clearly not going to go below 50% off for years so I picked it up. I'll wait for better than 10% discounts on the DLC though. Also got the new Doom, just for a change of pace, and something called Subnautica that was a bit of a whim.

PoE is crap, the game system is full of two dumb decisions for every good one. If it was $10, maybe. NPCs are crap, stat system is crap, items are crap.

You chose correctly. So worth it, might be my favorite game that isn't minecraft in 10 years. In my top 10 best games ever list, and possibly favorite rpg ever and rpg was my jam back in the day. So good. I put a huge chunk of time into it, so explorer and adhd friendly, need to get back to it since I've barely scratched the story (I'm not too much futher than the amazing Baron story line).

But yeah, hoping that DLC comes down a bit at some point.

Yah, Witcher 3 is worth it at any price IMO.  If you get into at all, you'll get a lot of value as it can be a ridiculously long game if you let it. Best writing and combat in the series by far.

I'm liking Pillars of Eternity. I'm not sure about all of the tweaks to the standard Infinity Engine system, but it's a style of game I've wanted to play. The f'ing bear is annoying though the first time you see it.  CHUNK CHUNK CHUNK.

It's more like one of those "build a base and survive in the wilderness" games like ARK or something.  Vaguely similar to Minecraft in survival mode, but the bases you're building in Subnautica are mostly prefab pieces fitted together, you're doing way less digging (almost none at all), and the world is pre-generated and static rather than randomly generated.

Also, the game is pretty focused around non-combat, which really pisses off some of the forum warriors.  There's certainly plenty of fauna out there that will chew YOU up, but since you don't get much for weapons, you're mostly going to be running away, which really annoys some people.  The tradeoff for not being able to pull out armor piercing bazookas is that the monsters in this game are spooky as hell, so I like it, but it definitely rubs some people the wrong way.

There's a shocking amount of claustrophobia and dread for a game that's so colorful and mostly well-lit as well. With some slight tweaks, maybe just a filter mod - it would immediately become one of the best horror games in recent memory.

Chunk chunk chunk as in loading or eating your health? If the latter, you're there too early/ small a party. That's fixable. If the former you're going to hate life when you get to the dragons, trolls and swamp-tree-monsters. They did some stutter-loading on my rig which ran everything else smoothly.

Same. I made some small lockers (just 4 titanium each) I put down in the capsule...which is now listing to port from the weight.

I like the counterpoint of the bright, beautiful setting against the loneliness and terror. Really makes for a nice experience, getting lulled into a nice peaceful exploratory swim and then some horrific beast silently slips up behind you...

The best review I can give is I went to play about a half hour before bed and suddenly noticed it was ohshit o'clock...and still didn't want to shut her down and go to bed.

People are saying the devs are pretty active and putting in content, so this one has a ton of promise. I normally hate early access because promise almost never pans out, but this one is definitely worth it even if I only get a couple more nights out of it.

I'm thinking of getting all 3 Witchers, Subnautica, and Stardew Valley. Oh Wasteland 2 and Shadowrun and/or X-com? I could afford them all, but then I don't have the time to play them all.

I have 34 items in my cart* and Steam won't let me checkout :awesome_for_real: :oh_i_see:

* Mostly Rocksmith 2014 songs but I have 11 regular games in there as well

I wish you guys would record yourselves playing Rocksmith.  It would be so much fun for the rest of us.  No, really srsly.

I only bought one and that will probably be it.  The Witcher 3 game.  Well, actually, someone else paid for it.  But it's still mine!  If the expansion thingy goes on sale some time for really cheap, I might get that.  Or shouldn't I?

Bought Witcher 3 and Doom.  Now I just need to wait for a non-shitty RX 480 to come out so I can play them......

Totally should. I'm also waiting for that very same thing. I'll be interested to know what you think of The Witcher 3.

I actually used the sale to get some items that had been on my wishlist for a while.

OOTP 17
Shadowrun: Hong Kong Extended
Endless Legend expansion pack
The Long Dark
Mount & Blade Viking Conquest

Most of the big stuff didn't have big enough discounts for me (like X-Com 2) or I haven't played the other games in the series (Witcher 3). They remain on my wishlist.

Ended up getting:

Soma (based on a late recommendation from a friend)
Subnautica
Dead by Daylight
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
Outlast

I think something else, don't remember.

The list of games I'm trying to buy:

....
TRANSFORMERS: Devastation
....

Oh shit, 10 euro?  I forgot this game existed, thanks!

And despite shitting on the sale earlier, I had some credit to use so I picked up Subnautica due to all the praise it is getting around here.  And Mark of the Ninja, because of ninjas.

And Mark of the Ninja, because of ninjas.

That is a damn fine game.

I grabbed Invisible Inc. because of people saying nice things about it in here. We should let game devs know how many sales we encourage in here if their game is good  :awesome_for_real:

I ended up with:

Some Rocksmith DLC
Subnautica
Assassin's Creed III and IV

Really enjoying AC III but then Subnautica took over all my time. Need to get my gear setup for Rocksmith on the new OS install (latency reduction settings, I'm exceedingly latency intolerant).

I didn't end up getting anything.  :/

I almost wanted to get Witcher 3, but I really want to play the first two before I do that.  Of course, then I try to play Witcher 1, and rarely get past the first real quest hub...

I bought Subnautica and Sins of the Solar Empire: Rebellion because one of my D&D buddies keeps hounding me to play it with him. The lack of Flash/Daily sales makes me not give a shit about Steam sales anymore, which is a shame for my library but a boon to my wallet.

I spent about $35 (including a $20 gift certificate someone gave me) and most of it was kind of mediocre stuff like Quest for Infamy (hoping for something like Quest for Glory, though I doubt it will live up to that) and Grow Home.  Grabbed the Saint's Row mega super deluxe pack just to make sure I have all of the DLC and for that Johnny Gatt goes to hell thing that was about half the cost of the entire pack anyway.  Overall, this was probably the least I've ever spent on a "big" sale since they started having them.

Has anyone bought or tried Lost Castle?  Looks like a Diablo/Rogue clone with some nice art.  Reviews seem very positive.

Looks Castle-Crashery. Coop may be fun.
