His new album takes on even deeper meaning now. He had to know and it had to influence the music. Again, broken. I've been listening to his catalog for the last few days anyway. I will continue to finish it out.

Haven't felt this bad about something like this since Warren.  Not sure if knowing for a while or it being sudden (at least public-wise) is the worse of the two.

Honestly never loved a lot of his music, but he was always welcome on my TV or radio.  He seemed really cool and had a grace about him.  Loved his duet with Bing Crosby and of course his various roles.

RIP and fuck cancer.

I actually thought his name was Ziggy when I first became aware of him in the mid-late 70s. He was cool and weird and one of my secret favorites (since most of my friends designated him too odd to be a true rocker - yeah yeah, bad friends, but I was 8).

I saw him in Labyrinth and wondered why he wasn't in the credits... figured it out shortly after.

Sad to see him go... very sad.

I'm just kinda stunned.

Was watching the Martian on the weekend and at one point a tune from Ziggy Stardust comes on and I thought, finally a decent tune in this movie.

It's called getting old.  More will die before you do.  Perhaps all of them.

Didn't even know he was sick.

It really does explain a lot about that last video.   :heartbreak:  He really kept this thing quiet.  I didn't know he was sick, let alone dying of cancer, either.

If he had to go, this last album was just one fantastic way to do it. It's just fantastic from top to bottom. And yes, the lyrics on many of the songs start to make a shitload of creepy sense knowing that he probably was well aware of his impending mortality.

Post by: Engels on January 11, 2016, 09:09:09 AM
I don't know how much he suffered going into that good night, but reports say he went peacefully. He had to go sometime, and I'm having trouble feeling bad about his death, seeing as he manage to pull off a new release 3 days before he went. Will I miss him? Of course, but at the same time, I can't help feel some contentment in knowing someone did the whole 'life' thing rather well, to the end.

Not only did he seemingly live fully, but according to myself and many of my friends, his last album is a masterpiece.

So basically David Bowie somehow manages to be cooler than everyone else even in the way he dies.

I saw this thread earlier and thought, "this has to be a hoax.  I was just in the car listening to his new album, which was released on his birthday like two days ago."  It's just surreal.  Going to take a while to get used to.

He handled death as he handled all things, with grace and creativity.

"The Pretty Things...

They wore it out, but they wore it well..."

There is no way to exaggerate the impact this man had on me and my peers, not just musically but to the way we saw ourselves and our sexuality.

I was just watching his episode of VH1's Storyteller series. It may be a few days before I can bring myself to listen to his last album.

He had an amazing life, but sixty nine is just too young.

Fuck cancer, fuck heart disease, fuck all of it.

Similar to Freddie Mercury with a lot of the songs on Innuendo (and of course Made in Heaven after he died). In fact one Bowie moment I like to watch a lot is him playing Sax and doing back up vocals for All the Young Dudes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwXY_qpyc5k) at the Freddie tribute concert with Ian Hunter, Queen, and Mick Ronson. That was also Mick Ronson's final big live appearance before he died of cancer.

I liked this tribute by TV on the Radio.

You did this life very well (https://www.instagram.com/p/BAbGMkKC4Wd/)

He contributed backing vocals for the song Providence on the Return to Cookie Mountain album.: TV On the Radio - Province (https://youtu.be/_whZTOiB5to)

Well technically they are right. I'm moved to want to make their band name literal by punching them in their mouths. So the tribute is indeed moving...

A band doing a cover of a beloved, deceased artist's song is fine and appropriate, and I don't hate Smash Mouth for it.

There are plenty of other reasons to hate Smash Mouth, though, like the fact that they make fucking terrible music in general.

If they had made that cover at any other time I might agree. But the timing reeks of "Hey ignore that dead guy. Look at me. LOOK AT ME!!!"

Met him in the Streets of Soho in '97. Ten word conversation that convinced a 26-year-old me with an ego the size of a planet that no matter how badass I thought I was, there was someone infinitely more awesome.

And of course, there's this...

He was a New Yorker to the core.
