Title: The Man in the High Castle (an Amazon original title)
Post by: satael on November 27, 2015, 12:26:32 AM
A glimpse into an alternate history of North America and what life after WWII may have been like if the Nazis had won the war (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1740299/) (based on Philip K Dick's book)

So this (or rather the first season of 10 episodes) is now available and while it was entertaining it was rather far from the themes and the feel of the book and felt a bit forced in its length at times (which is made apparent by the fact that the story wasn't finished in one season despite the book being a bit over 200 pages long).

and compared to book

I'm about 5 episodes in, but am enjoying this. The production is very well done, the story is compelling, the acting is decent. (The chick reminds me somewhat of a young Lauren Bacall.)

I read the book about 35 years ago for a university Sci Fi class, and honestly don't remember a whole lot about it, other than the main theme, the main characters' names, and odd bits. (The other books for that class were "A Canticle for Leibowitz," "Behold the Man," and something else - maybe "Ringworld"?).

Damn, you're dead on with the Bacall resemblance. I've thought the actress was ridiculously hot since her days as Gwen Raiden in Angel, but I could never put my finger on why. You just nailed it.

I'm confused by the first episode and only got that far.

Ohhh Gwen Raiden!  Also, she was Jack in Chronicles of Riddick.

The series has been renewed for season 2 (http://deadline.com/2015/12/the-man-in-the-high-castle-renewed-season-2-amazon-1201669352/). I am somewhat interested to see how they are going to finish the story since it's going to differ from the book quite a bit judging by the things they changed in season 1 (though I fear they'll find a way to stretch out the story even further in hopes of additional seasons).

Just binged this over the last week. Really liked it, especially the last two episodes.

I watched the first episode and I really liked it so I watched most of the second episode (cat drama cut it a little short) and didn't like it anywhere near as much.  It got a bit boring. I really enjoy alternative history stuff and I'm hoping this gets better again.

Definitely some slow spots but it picks up.

Wife and I are at about episode 7 at the moment and the last 3 episodes have been Suddenly! Nothing happens! Needs to pick up a lot, the comments here about the last two episodes being better give me hope.

I personally don't feel like anything really picked up speed or went anywhere in the last two episodes.  It really felt like a whole lot of nothing happened, and nothing really got resolved plotwise, it just meandered on.  It felt like a mid season break at best.  I honestly don't think I'm going to keep watching this at all.

This is back for anyone who cares. I'm 3 episodes in and liking it.  Rufus Sewell and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa are killing it as usual.

Binged it. My biggest gripe is that it really is more "inspired by PKD's book" rather than "based on" since I was hoping to see the book turned into a movie but otherwise the second season was enjoyable.

Didn't read it so enjoying it on its own terms.

Going to wait for the LARP on Jan 20. See how I like it.

Obergröpenführer may tweet bitchily about that statement.

Obergröpenführer

This is my new favorite thing. If you came up with it, you are a genius.

Ok, finished the second season.  I have to say I liked the second season better than the first.  Some questions got answered and some intriguing things happened.

Ya, good overall. They renewed it for a third season and brought in Eric Overmeyer (The Wire, The Affair) as the new show runner.

I can only take partial credit. I'm pretty sure Haemish came up with "gröpenführer", I just added the "Ober" to fit the Man in the High Castle narrative.

Good group effort then.

Good to hear. I binged Season 2 over the holidays and loved it.

I'd love to take credit for Gropenfurher, but I don't think that was me. It was a work of absolute genius, though.

The first time I saw the term used was in a Doonebury strip years ago about Arnold Schwarzenegger when he was the Governor of California. Trudeau has brought it back as ubergropenfuhrer recently in reference to Donald Trump.

I just started season 2 but am losing hope.  Do they ever stop with the sweet valley high teen drama crap?

Also, doesn't this show just feel small?  It's about a country but you never get a sense that anything at all is happening off screen.  It's a larp.  The characters and acting really don't help dispel that feeling.

Stick with it, season 2 picks up pretty significantly at ep 5 or so.

I just watched both series of this and enjoyed them. I'd watch more.

The depressing gloom of it all got to me a little, but the acting and unpredictability kept me going and I liked where it got to.

Just finished s4 of this.

And it got really good.

I found s2 and s3 a bit slow and dull.

But s4 was much better focussed and ended really well. Great job not trying to redeem Smith, or Kido while giving them both a solid story.

It lost me in season 3, which was too much hard work. Sounds like I should try again.

S4 got a new show runner and they really changed up A LOT.  Was its best season IMO even if the end is a bit WTF.

Oh so I should go back and try to finish S3 which was a drag? Ok cool.

S2 was decent but S3 had tough moments to get through but improved after a certain character is no longer in it...

S4 was hands down the best of all 4. I loved the finale in how it wrapped up, even if the last 5 minutes kind of ended on a WTF? moment. Still worth it.

For a 30 second scene talking broadly to weirdness and chaos to follow I thought it was fine.
