Title: 3rd World Cup (Tabletop)
Post by: Falconeer on November 09, 2015, 05:28:13 AM
The 3rd edition of the World Cup just took place in Italy. The World Cup is serious business as it takes pace every 4 years, and it gathers a huge amount of players from all over the world. This year, the previous record has been broken, with more than 900 players for a total of 150 teams signed up (every team is made of 6 players). An Italian team won, the "Masters of Tilea", with a team made of Skaven, Undead, Lizardmen, Wood Elf, Dark Elf and Dwarf (every team has to have 6 different races).

Here's a five hours long video of the event. Obviously impossible to watch in full, it is still an amazing document for tabletop lovers and Blood Bowl players in particular.

And since the audio doesn't work because of stupid copyright laws, here's another video from the opening day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4yL4kTxI_g

How does it work TV-wise? Do they all start with fresh 1k teams?

They all start with 1k teams and they can take 3 skills (on three players of their choosing). Players do NOT level up through matches, they pick another 2 skills before the 4th and 7th match on other 2 players. Every coach and their team plays 9 individual matches. No SPP awarded at all.

These is an excerpt from the official World Cup:

Quote
Skill Progression.

Before round 1 you may assign three skills to three separate players on your roster. Before round 4 and round 7 you may assign two skills to two separate players on your roster. No player can get more than one extra skill during the tournament.

All skills are ‘normal’ skills. Before round 4 and 7 one of the skills may be a ‘double’.

All skills must be noted on the team roster your teamcaptain hands in to the organization when registering your team on day 1.

Do they ignore injuries and deaths too?

That's a pretty lame format.

I think they do ignore injuries and deaths too. Injuries and deaths count for the remainder of the game, but players are back and healthy at the end of the match. The point is try to "limit" luck a bit in a game that is already hugely dependant on the dice. This way, everyone has the same chances across the 9 games. I think it sounds lame too, but I see where they are coming from and all the competitive players seem happy with it.

Here's the full official World Cup ruleset if you are curious. I like the part about 'cocked dice'.

It might sound lame but it also sounds very fair to everyone in practice. This is a competition not a campaign.
