Title: Gabe Newell back in your wallet - Summer Sale 2015
Post by: Lucas on June 11, 2015, 09:53:48 AM
Started mine in advance with the ongoing GOG one: purchased Desktop Dungeons, This War of Mine and de-disked Jane Jensen's Grey Matter. Will probably end the GOG one with Expedition:Conquistador.

I have a small budget for this sale, so I'll probably limit myself to Tomb Raider:GOTY, Stanley Parable and Legend of Grimrock 2 (which has been available on GOG at a nice discount, but I have the first game on Steam, so...)

If you took every single game on sale during the summer sale, bought it, and added it all up, I wonder what percentage of a Chris Roberts spaceship it'd be worth.

You could buy a wing or perhaps a double decker sofa.

This seems like a spreadsheet worth writing. Can we call them RSI Ducketts?

I'm limiting myself to buying only things on my wishlist and even then if they are more than 50% off (though I might buy something else on the last day if I make that long without any purchases or if someone really recommends something).

I'm gonna try to stick to $5 or less games. Haven't been gaming a lot lately; also, backlog, etc.

Yeah it's still wigged out though. I was finally able to join one and then immediately died before my stuff was even displayed on the screen and then the Respawn button wasn't working. I quit that game and now I can't started a new one (again).

Wow, FUCK this game.

So, my "group" (or whatever it's called) got to level ten, where a boss monster and a bunch of super strong minions spawn.  The minions keep respawning infinitely, but the boss stays down once you whittle down his ~100 million or so hp.  The only way to beat it is to kill everyone in all three lanes at once before any of the minions (who each have something in the area of 5 million hp themselves) respawn.

Since players are dealing on the order of couple hundred damage per click at this point, obviously this requires coordination between everybody if you want to get anywhere.  Coordination, I should point out, between total strangers in a game with no chat interface and if there's a way to even see who's in your lane I don't know what it is and most of them are idling AFK anyway and the lag is so bad that I'm not even sure what my OWN character is doing half the time.  But that's what's supposed to happen.

So anyway, we brought down the boss and have been fucking up the respawn timers since.  That was THREE HOURS AGO by the way.

 :angryfist:

I joined a game with a whole bunch of people (picked the highest level game on my friends list) and just let my DPS run.  There seem to be enough tryhards spamming heals to keep me afloat.

They are including Shark Cash, which is what brings the price up.

The problem is that they did not just create a bundle with the Shark cash crap, but they also removed the non-bundled GTA V from the steam store.  It's a clear attempt at getting featured as a "sale" when it really isn't.

After I posted that I guess they realized they were getting a lot of hate from various parts of the internet and put the GTA V by itself back in the store, which incidentally means that GTA V no longer appears as on sale (which is good, cause it isn't).

They'e been doing the exact same thing on XBox Live Gold - putting up a bundle of GTA V + x amount of ingame cash for $69.95 and promoting it as the game being on sale.

Actually from what I"m reading, it might also be a way to get around steam refunds, since the Shark Cards are DLC that are immediately consumed on purchase which means it's no longer eligible for a refund on steam.

Which is funny since apparently hacking on GTA V is rampant and people created guns that just create in game currency when they shoot.

I've put in about an hour or so.  Cool visuals, physics and crashes, but not much else wrapped around it currently.  If you liked Destruction Derby back in the day, you'll get more than a strong whiff of nostalgia.

I've heard it's pretty decent.  Not, like, $30 decent, but not "just slap some anime babes on our crappy shovelware casual game so the penises will buy it" either. I think it's a port of a Vita game or something.

AKIBASTRIP is pretty terrible; the combat system is awkward and clunky because you have to target each piece of clothing (head, torso, pants) individually by mashing the appropriate button. There are no combos, just mash whatever until it will let you tear that piece off, rinse, repeat.

And that's the first thing I've bought so far this year. :-)

*Nearly* got Valkyria Chronicles too, but having already played it on the PS3 it still felt a bit extravagant, even at 75% off.

Edit: The Answer is no. But it's cheaper to buy the Season Pass and get the leftover DLC separately.

I got the first two Shadowrun games.  That's it, so far.  I have a pretty big backlog of games so I reckon that by the time I make a dent, some of the other one's I'm interested in will be cheaper in the next sale.  I try not to get games that are in early release or buy to beta test because I'm inevitably disappointed and wish I had waited.  I'm interested in ARK... for some reason I really want to play this game... and GTA 5 but I'll wait until they slip closer to a tenner.  I'm SO in the mood for a jrpg but I don't know which one to get.  Any suggestions?  It doesn't have to be on sale or on Steam.  It can also be for the 360.

Neither Steam nor 360 are good platforms for JRPGs. If you haven't played Tales of Vesperia or Lost Odyssey, they're probably the 2 best for 360. Steam has some nice indie stuff like the ones Carpe Fulgar have localized (Recettear, etc.); I hear Last Remnant is actually playable on PC unlike the 360 version which was a buggy, laggy POS. The Hyperdimension Neptunia games are also on Steam (and they're the updated Vita versions); they're charming and funny, although they're all pretty easy and don't reinvent the wheel mechanically.

Very much so, yes.  I enjoyed it more than the first even.  Its very good survival horror done with movie level presentation.  Though do not let your daughter watch you play it (though maybe she's older than I think), as some of that shit would have given me nightmares for years as a child.

Standard warning about the controls is in effect.  It has some extreme consolitis, which I know drives some people here mad, but I adjusted.

Title: Re: Gabe Newell back in your wallet - Summer Sale 2015

It's less about consolitis and more about Capcom's fascination with making you control your character in their games like a tank (DMC excluded).

I don't know, shit like that never bothered me.  Loved all the resident evils despite the hated controls also (well, as in, I played them all up through 3 and not a one since).

I just sort of take the controls as part of the game.  "Ok, my character can only move like this.  I must figure out a path to victory through all the obstacles with these limitations."  Its just part of the natural challenge of the game.  Though maybe I tend to deconstruct games a bit to much, as most people just scream at the TV wondering why they just cant turn around lightning fast and shoot the fucking thing that jumped up behind them.

I loved Resident Evil 0 on the old nintendo cube thing.

Didn't care for Dead Space on the PC, but I was foolishly trying to play a shooter with a keyb/mouse. I remember being pissed because it was really nice in 3D with the HUDs and whatnot. But those controls, they broke me.

I didn't mind Dead Space 1 and quite enjoyed it, but I seem to remember there were 'config fixes' that I applied to make it a bit more responsive...

Still thinking.

(oh, and you're right about Elena.  She's older and mature than she used to be, but Dead Space 1 was enough to realise this isn't really for kids.  After all, I never completed Amnesia....)

Shh, Schild... he's an oldster.

Thanks for the tips, guys... I haven't player The Lost Odyssey so there's that.  I also haven't player the last couple of Final Fantasy games, either.  I can't remember but the last one I got was just a pain in the butt.  I liked some of them a lot, though.

Also, I enjoyed Dead Space 1 and 2 also but, yeah, probably not a kid's game unless they're sick like my nephew Michael was.  He was a prodigy of the creepy and violent, like me.  So proud.

Ages? It only came out half a year ago.
Hmm, I thought it was clear from context that I wasn't referring to "ages" in the geological sense.

If I replace "ages" by "months" will you answer my question?

Since it only came out six months ago, you can probably wait another six and pick it up for like five bucks. It's good, but it's not something you need to rush to pick up.

Picked up Chivalry: Medieval Warfare. It was too cheap to not take a flyer on it. Anyone play it?

Yeah I got it for like 5$ a year ago. Tried it a few times not bad but it's not as good as Warband. Not as fluid or fun.

Mostly would like to see Invisible, Inc and especially Rocksmith on dailies. I've got 4 Rocksmith DLC packs waiting to borg into my stupidly large DLC library. Though after playing Rocksmith at a friend's house with NO DLC I'm totally ok with my DLC mini-addiction.

It looks like the 9$ version is just the base game. It's good if you're not sure you'll actually enjoy the game, but if you're pretty confident, the Ultimate Edition (which is 42$ in the summer sale) has all of the issues they've released so far. If you do end up liking the game, you're going to pay more than that to get all of the current content by buying those separately.

Is there something wrong with Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues since it's still in early access and already -50% off on steam sale?

fake edit: actually it says under "About This Game" that it's still in pre-Alpha and that the  game still needs a LOT of work.

I was disappointed in dead space 2. Controls are better, but it went for jump scares, they threw monsters spawns close to you and it felt more like a regular shooter and not the slower paced combat that dead space 1 did so great. It still had some parts I really enjoyed so its worth $5 if you enjoyed the first one.

Conversely, Alien Isolation is really tense and awesome. Unfortunately the controls are piggy on PC unless you use a gamepad, which I don't like for that kind of game. Struggled with them the first night and last night with a controller the button layout and options made more sense. Bleh. But the sound and visuals are amazing, I have it cranked up to movie levels and the ship creaks and ambient noise are great for tension building.

And Garriott, yeah. C'mon, now.

4 purchases so far, one to go. All of them are games I really want to play so I don't go for a 75% rule to live by. It saves me more money to have a healthy backlog since it reduces the chance for impulsive purchase on a game that just got released.

That was kind of my point. Going -50% off at this point just removed any small hope that I might have had for this game (I had a soft spot for Garriott despite everything mostly due to nostalgia).
I was just interested to hear if someone knew of any new developments that might account for the game being on sale at -50%.

I don't think anyone can properly react to an alpha by Garriott being sold on Steam in the first place.  When you say the alpha is now 50% off, you're very close to ripping a hole in time and becoming your own grandfather.  Is it terrible?  Is it good?  When you discount an alpha on Steam, do you get an imaginary number?

I have to give DoubleFine massive fucking credit for being such awesome pricks on the Steam forums. I was looking at Massive Chalice and almost dropped the $10 but first hit the forums because... DoubleFine.

A user made a positive video in regards to the game with lots of praise, but the DF devs locked the thread with a "It's technically a banning offense, but that seems a little harsh to me, consider this a warning instead."

I didn't buy much, but I regret most of it.

  • Child of Light, looks pretty but I don't know anything else about it.  An RPG I think?  Going to be a while before I get around to trying it, probably.
  • DeadCore, a first person platforming game targeted at competitive speedrunning players.  It's one of those "SO HARDCORE" games so it's probably garbage.  Don't know why I bought it.
  • LISA, which looks like it might be the greatest thing ever (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugejZEUNjzg) but I'm not sure.
  • Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments.  Testament of Sherlock Holmes was pretty good up until the story completely shit all over itself in the third act, so hopefully this one will keep the mostly relatively sane puzzles but stick with a storyline that's slightly less bananas.  I also picked up a bunch of those old "Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detetctive" FMV games because I think we had one when I was a kid but I was too young to understand it, so they feel nostalgic but still kind of new.
  • Sunless Sea.  This one I think looks fun.  Haven't played it yet, but it looks really intriguing at least.
  • Transistor.  Heard mixed things about it, and I wasn't a huge fan of Bastion so I put off getting this but it does look interesting at least.  I dunno, I'll give it a shot.

Transistor
Divinity 2
Shadow Warrior
Killer is Dead
Skull Girls
System Shock 2
The Fall
Sakura Spirit (  :pedobear: )
One Finger Death Punch
Blade Symphony
Valkyria Chronicles
Anachronox

Total damage was around $50, little less I'm guessing

You Must Build a Boat
Darkest Dungeon
Nidhogg
GemCraft (Could play on Kongregate again but... 500 achievements!)
eden *
Sunless Sea
Apotheon
Invisible Inc
Prime World Defenders (surprisingly fun)
Wings of Vi
Gaokao.Love.100Days
If My Heart Had Wings
Blade Kitten
Brothers
FF XIII / FFXIII-2 (yeah yeah, I know)
Talos Principal
Grow Home
Hero generations
Titan Souls

Mix of some old ones that I've missed and some newer ones.  Not sure if I have the patience for Sunless Sea but it loos so interesting I'll give it a shot.

I finished up Banner Saga last sale and really enjoyed it.  I think the second one is out soon?  Looking forward to that for sure.  I keep looking at Shadow Warrior (as well as Rise of the Triad) but I just wonder if it can really stand to play that style game anymore.

I was going to buy Akiba Strip but I watched some playing of it on Twitch first and it looked pretty meh.  Seemed like it was just the same combat over and over and it seems like the battles took a really long time.  Maybe I didn't watch long enough.

XCOM DLC
NBA 2K15
Age of Wonders III and DLC
World of Magic
Chivalry: Medieval Warfare
The Long Dark

I couldn't decide between The Long Dark and Stranded Deep, so I picked the one that was the deepest discount. Hopefully I made the right choice

I've gone to South jersey beaches my whole life: Wildwood, Cape May, Ocean City, AC, etc. and I've never seen orange people. That's a North Jersey/NYC thing.

I think they're orange because they don't go to the beach for their tan.

I think you mean "when that incredible show started".

Also wow, Steam sale this year was a serious letdown.
Meanwhile, I spent over $100 on the steam sale.   :ye_gods:

Wasn't that great sale, no game I wanted was cheaper than 50%, and I think it will continue to be this way since most popular games don't drop below 50% during the first year. Outside of sales steam is pretty bad for euro customers, €60 for games like fallout, witcher and gta5 instead of the €45-€50 it used to be.  At least they got a good refund program, refunded a game I bought during the sale so that saved me €20.

I think the only thing I got this time around was Grimrock 2.  Which is quite a neat game, by the way.

Problem with these sales now is that there are least 3 or 4 different places that are doing them at least twice a year, and by now most of us have probably gotten all the small and obscure titles that we want.  Very little seems to be left that interests me at any price, except for possibly a few newer titles and some AAA games that never seem to come down low enough to tempt me.  They are just regurgitating the same shit over an over by now.

I mostly got distracted by the "monster clicker" game. The way in which people got organised to reach high levels (I believe the game is ends at 100m), wrote scripts to play the game and other communities organised to try and oppose people reaching high scores was pretty fascinating. Especially considering the game was designed to have no rewards and be a transitory experience.

I was kind of the opposite.  I really thought the game was handled really badly.  Like, I'm glad that it was interesting for some people to make scripts and things, but for the rest of us who aren't in some secret fun club it kind of sucked ass.

Like, just to pull one example off the top of my head, there's an item you could buy that would lower the cooldowns of everyone who used an ability right afterwards.  Okay, fine.  But when do you use it?  You have no way of telling people to wait a few seconds for you to click this thing.  You have no way of knowing how many people are even active or what their cooldowns are or anything like that.  There's functionally no way to use this thing "effectively," you just click it and maybe it has an effect somewhere on somebody (not that you'll ever find out one way or the other).  And on the other hand, if you're using some other item, you can't know who else has this cooldown reduction thing, and if you should use your ability now or wait a few seconds for someone else to cast the cooldown reduction or what.  It's a potentially strategic item that loses all strategic value and just becomes "sometimes something might randomly happen" because of the way the game is designed.

It's a game that claims to encourage teamwork and helping your buddies, but allows teammates to screw over everybody (either accidentally or on purpose) restricts communication and cooperation to such a degree that any tiny positive impact you have is massively outweighed by random assholes casting wormhole at the wrong time or whatever... and then what even is the point of playing at all?  I didn't think it was even possible to fuck up a clicker game this badly.

It was a shallow game, and less "connected" to the sale than the previous voting. Plus it reset at 2:00am for me. The surprise was not the game but the extent to which people (including myself) could get drawn into trying to "win" it.

The organised groups worked out how to pick a game session by it's ID and had worked out their strategy off-line. I know there were reddit and steam groups and I assume others.

The only reason I played the "game" if you could call it that was to get more cards to sell.

I bought Enslaved Odyssey to the West for $5. That was the grand total of what I spent this year for the same reasons a lot of you are already mentioning. Hell, I have so much in my steam library that I haven't installed, let alone played, that I don't need to spend another dime for a long time if I don't want to.

Same. I ended up two cards short of the badge. Went to check and realized it was like 10 minutes after the deadline, so I couldn't even buy them to complete it. Argh.

Between the clicker game and buying random stuff I ended up with two levels of the badge, even without doing any card trading.

If you need any of my extra cards (are they still usable?) send me a trade request and you can have em for whatever.   :awesome_for_real:

The trick is to sell your duplicates early and use the money to buy any holes later when the prices have gone down.  You'll still come out ahead after making the badge.  If you end up with enough, go for a second level.

Another is that if you get enough cards to make a badge between sales, wait for the sale to make the badge.  That usually gets you an event card for each.

It's the couch cushions of Steam.
