Title: Cave Story. Free, quirky Japanese Metroid-ish adventure game.
Post by: Fabricated on March 04, 2005, 02:28:30 PM
Yes, it's translated too.

SChild has played it, but I haven't seen any mention of it here. Rather cool considering it's freeware. Multiple endings, tons of hidden stuff, actual plot, catchy music.

I'm assuming at least one person downloaded the game, but if not, I've attached both the game and the patch here.

The game is archived using lzh, which puzzles the hell out of me. I changed it to a zip so I could upload it.

For those playing the game and wondering what stuff they missed or how to do certain things, look here.

SPOILERS:
*To save Professor Booster, don't jump down after him when you see him fall in the labyrinth. There's a red mark on the ledge where you enter, back up, get a running start, and jump right from that mark. You should land on the other side and not need to get the crappy version of the booster pack, which causes the professor to die.

*To save Curly (the "girl" robot), don't talk to her right away when you finally make it to the core's room. Go check the far right side of the cave and you'll see a sparkling object. Pick it up, it's a tow rope you can use to save her after the boss fight when she gives you her air tank. Use the rope on her, then go through the water tunnel as normal until you make it to the small house, go in there, take a rest on the bed, and then read the notebook in the bookcase. Go pump the water out of Curly. Take her with you again. She'll disappear once more when you get through the area, but she'll show up again later.

*Curly's Machinegun is nice, but if you want a much better weapon, DO NOT give her your Polar Star. If you also saved Professor Booster and got the booster pack 2.0, you can make it back to the hermit gunsmith you stole the Polar Star from at the beginning of the game. He'll be pissed, but have a sudden change of heart, upgrading the gun to The Spur. The Spur is fucking badass; it's regular attack is equal to the power of a fully powered up Polar Star, and it can't be upgraded/downgraded by weapon powerups or damage, since you can charge it by holding the attack button. A fully charged blast travels the whole screen and does up to 100+ damage.

*If you don't want The Spur nor the Machine Gun, keep the Polar Star, and talk to the roach merchant in the Labyrinth. He'll turn your Polar Star and Fireball into "The Snake", which fires fireball projectiles that travel through walls in a straight pattern. Kind of a shitty gun IMO.

*If you want yet ANOTHER gun, get some Jellyfish Juice and use it on the fireplace in the meeting hall in Mimiga Village. You'll find the bubbler, which is pretty neat when upgraded, but almost useless when not.

*Yet MORE weapon alternatives. Late in the game you'll be able to go on the outside of the island. Use the Booster Pack or Machine Gun to fly under the ledge Kazuma is on and enter the house. Talk to the little people there and find out about the husband. Go back to Mimiga Village when you can and go to the graveyard. The husband is there in the grass, look around for him. Take him home and he'll offer to trade the Blade for the Nemesis. The gun fires insanely powerful and fast shots at level 1, but the gun levels up every time you pick up a powerup, and every level up makes it MUCH less powerful.

*When you find Curly again, she'll have lost her memory. Talk to the guy next to her bed and find out about the mushrooms that might restore her memory. Go to the Mimiga Village graveyard yet again and fly up to that door you couldn't reach at the beginning of the game. Talk to the mushroom there, and work through the dialog until he gives you the Mushroom Badge. Look at the badge in your inventory, and talk to him again to fight him. Kill the shroom and take it back to Curly to restore her memory. You're done.

*When you get the Booster Pack, go back to the labyrinth when you get the chance and find that secret passage you couldn't quite get to. Go through the wall and enter the door, you'll pop out above the clinic and finally be able to get that chest you saw there. It has an Arms Protector which makes you loss 50% less weapon power when you get hit.

*The Old Lady (can't remember her name) will give you a Life Pot if you don't have one, so if you used one up and have the chance, go back for another.

*After beating the final boss, go back into the prefab building during your escape if you want to try out a really, really fucking hard extra level.

I recently got back into this game. It's amazing how good it really is, probably one of the best platformers in years.

Also, there's a company out there that's SUPPOSEDLY making a PSP version. I think it's a crock of hooey, but here's a linky (http://www.variantinteractive.com/en-us/games/variant/cs/index.php) (and obligatory info thread from their forums (http://variantinteractive.com/forums/index.php?topic=25) and cover art. Oh, and I don't buy this Variant company's song and dance about making the PSP version. It smells of total bullshit. But if it's true, it's a great reason to own a PSP.

I don't think that's true. That cover is just fanart with stuff pasted over it.

Yea, in the thread link he talks about that.

That's why he might not be bullshitting everyone. He does seem to be pretty open about the whole affair. Maybe he's just insane (the Variant CEO that is).

Okay, so Doukutsu is incredibly addictive.  Sweet graphics, cool retro side-scrolling gameplay.  Nice.  And, it's free.  Can't beat that.
