Title: Android Gaming
Post by: Sky on April 15, 2014, 08:53:20 PM
Ok. So I have a tablet now. My first Android device, hell my first non-computer computer. So I'm kind of new to this stuff.

First thing I loaded on of course was minecraft pe, just because. It's a pale experience, but I will put minecraft on anything capable of running it. Then I snagged GTA:SA, which I've heard varying experiences. I have a gamepad (the MOGA 2, I think) that's pretty nifty but I haven't launched it (gamepad is charging).

Most of the stuff I've been looking at seems like really egregious microtrans crippling, which I don't have much patience for as a pc gamer.

Anyone have experience with the various dosbox apps? If I could load some stuff from GOG onto the tablet I'll just skip most of the modern greedy games.

Oh, it's a Galaxy Note Pro 12.2, running kitkat 4.4.2.

Clash of Clans, Dungeon Keeper have a steady F13 showing. You don't need to spend any cash at all.

I enjoy Hungry Shark Evolution and Plants V Zombies also.

Minion rush is hilarious, and if you have kids it's easy to play.

I've read both those threads and the games sound annoying. I'm not on board for that kind of thing. I also don't care for competitive gaming.

At first blush it seems there is a lot of room for developers to make real games in this space, when my best option so far is basically a PS2 game. Maybe I'm just back into the early adopter niche, having hardware capable of running a decent game at a decent resolution but the mainstream has crap.

I'm amazed at the piles of garbage and cutesy nonsense I waded through looking for something decent. And the handful of things with promise are mostly crippled by microtrans. As I said, I'm not on board for that. Guild Wars 2 is as far down that road as I go. I subbed to TOR rather than deal with even the relatively minor microtrans crap there.

Which is why I'm asking about dosbox. I just wish GOG had an app and let you play your GOG purchases on a mobile device. Or steam for that matter, though that would be a bit more limited as far as what would be able to run on the hardware.

Well you are in for a world of disappointment then. I wish you luck on your quest.

Android gaming is, unfortunately, a festering shitpile.

There's lots of possible reasons for this: less willingness to pay for apps compared to iOS users, rampant piracy and fragmentation of both devices and Android itself making development more costly.

The result is that if you want good mobile games you need to avoid Android. And I say this as a total Android user myself. Get an Apple device or get a dedicated mobile gaming device that has nothing to do with Android.

Sorry :(

Apocrypha is correct, unfortunately.  My first tablet was an Android, but for my current one I switched over to the iPad.  On Android, it's pretty much Angry Birds type stuff and micro-trans.

Some board game implementations have been carried over to Android recently, I believe, but the majority of those are still mostly Apple as well.

Isn't Shadowrun Returns available on Android?

Yeah, it's not the updated version on the PC, though.  It's mostly functional, but things like balance tweaks are missing (and it's kind of a pain to pay on the phone due to the precision required on the tiny screen) and I don't think Dragonfall is available either.

There are also a few retro games if you're looking for that.  Sega's got some stuff on there (Jet Grind Radio, Crazy Taxi, assorted Sonics) as does Square (which has some Final Fantasies, and  Chrono Trigger but they're a bit expensive).

I poked around with DosBox for a bit, and it seemed to work fine.  I haven't used it much because the controls are awkward on the touch screen.  Maybe this won't be an issue for you if you're using peripherals, though.

Yeah, I've got a 12.2" screen and a gamepad. Waiting on a keyboard to be delivered, though I might leave it in the basic sleeve and see if I can pair my apple BT keyboard and magic mouse to it. I wonder if I can play Shadowrun if I bought it for the pc, as I'm not paying twice for it...

Re: DOSBox for Android; I use DosBox Turbo and its frontend, DOSBox Manager, with Hacker's Keyboard to get the full keyboard layout.
It does work, and pretty well, mostly for demonstration purposes on my tiny LG phone, but probably more truly usable on a tablet.

A ton of emulation is available; I'm running John NES Lite, SNESDroid, JFrotz, jzintv4droid, MAME4Droid, Frodo C64, Mupen64Plus AE, aN64 Free

Wargus is a good port of Warcraft 2. Dune 2 has a good port as well.
I have ports of Majesty, Beat Hazard, Another World, Sonic 1 but I don't play them much.

Ur-Quan Masters is available for Android.

Of course, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
