Title: Silicon Valley
Post by: Abagadro on April 06, 2014, 11:24:53 PM
This is Mike Judge's new HBO show that comes on after GoT. First episode was really good. Does not sugar coat things with lots of computer geek references thrown around, plus Martin Starr!

Watched it. Liked it. The whole attitude the main characters showed towards all these dipshit CEO's and their "innovation" bullshit is how I feel when I hear most of these fucking TED talks. Some of these dudes are too smart to be that far up their own asses.

Memorial Day Weekend here in the US.  Television networks (and cable) see a marked reduction in viewership as people tend to go out on the first vacation of the summer on this coming weekend.  That'd be my suspicion, but I can't say for certain.

Yay for it being renewed. The hotel room scene was fucking hilarious.

A really huge bummer is that the actor playing Peter Gregory passed away, he was relatively young too.

OTOH I got a hell of a lot of amusement out of the guy booking it after meeting with the opposition team for 11 mins.

Title: Re: Silicon Valley

For a series that claims to be spot on regarding the tech setting the Deleted Porn thing was painful in every aspect. Starting from pressing a delete key deletes everything without comfirmation (still, that could be a quirk of the OS, whatever). But you never ever do tests with live data, especially if those tests are done by unknown entities like subcontractors. Thats beyond stupid. Couldn't appreciate the funny in the show because of that.

Title: Re: Silicon Valley
Post by: HaemishM on June 02, 2015, 09:06:46 AM
The delete key thing didn't bother me because of how it happened. It wasn't about whether the shit could work (because the minute they started talking about using GPU's as CPU's I kind of checked out on the tech), it was about Russ being such a colossally self-absorbed dick that he caused them to fuckup. I mean, FFS, their entire tech premise is based on the Weisman score for compression which is entirely made up for the show.

In short, NERDS.

Short version, yes, this is a thing, for anything that's a repetitive, dedicated task.  Not entirely sure what they're doing here is anywhere near reality, but one of the writers apparently has heard of bitcoin miners.

Quite a lot of supercomputing work these days is based on GPUs. GPUs have different strengths than CPUs. For something like compression, it's definitely plausible.

Title: Re: Silicon Valley
Post by: MahrinSkel on June 03, 2015, 09:43:27 AM
GPU computing is a bit of a black art, but in essence any time that you have a problem where you are performing programmatically simple (meaning lots of math and little case testing) operations on large sets of simple data blocks (that you are stepping through sequentially), GPU's are going to blow away CPU's.

There are some critical elements that determine just how much of an advantage GPU's have, in essence the more you can make your problem like crunching through pixels and polygons (in a programmatic sense), the better the performance.

And like Raph said, as long as you could arrange your data into the kinds of structures GPU's like and use the kinds of operations they are good at, there's no reason GPU compression couldn't work.

Post by: HaemishM on June 03, 2015, 09:55:25 AM
I'll give you the GPU's thing. But still... Weisman score and the entire tech premise of the show. Playing hard and fast with how tech works for comedic effect is kind of their thing. No reason to get spergy about the delete key if you've already bought into the premise.

Also, how long does it take to jerk off every guy in the room? Remember to show your math.

The show is weird from an accuracy standpoint from a number of angles. (Warning: nerdery ahead)

The basic premise of the show is totally fucked. This guy invents lossless compression that compresses 3x better than lossy compression and doesn't realize it - that by itself is completely implausible. How that is turned into a business, which is the central element of the show, then makes no sense. They keep talking about mobile suites and the cloud and having a website and such...the actual product here is the algorithm itself. You patent it and then license it to everyone. That's the business plan. You don't need the cloud, you don't need a mobile version or an app, you don't need servers or a website or customers. The customers are companies who license your tech. Which would be every company that does cloud storage, streaming anything, etc. The entire business itself makes no sense at all.

The business plan is this: hire a lawyer and patent the technique. Then everyone throws money at you.

Nucleus has the same problem. It's a compression algorithm, but it's also an operating system, a user interface design, etc? Wut? Compression is such a minor part of an OS. Most files on disk aren't compressed at all for a variety of reasons. The idea that a compression algorithm is the OS, or the main component of the OS, is complete nonsense.

The writers don't seem to really understand what either Nucleus or Pied Piper tech is supposed to do. They want the show to be about an app/website but that's not what a compression algorithm is.

This stuff doesn't bother me. I notice it but it doesn't detract from my enjoyment. I don't consider these "plot holes" or anything, just observations.

Title: Re: Silicon Valley
Post by: KallDrexx on June 13, 2015, 11:22:16 AM
I mean, if they had a realistic app that would make money then it would probably either 1) been invented already and people would go "but that already exisits" or 2) the writer that came up with the idea would have quit the show and hit up some silicon valley VCs to make the app instead of the show (the people on this show have huge ties to the real silicon valley figures).

So if that's the only accuracy concern you have then I think the show is doing pretty well.

The lead is probably the worst character. I guess in part because he's the straight man most of the time and because he's also clueless and whiny and has to do a lot of plot-relevant stuff instead of riff.

Season finale was ok. It was a little silly how easily they lost control of the board. I get the sense that they need them to be the underdogs so they keep erecting more obstacles but it feels a little forced how often they jump out of one scrape just to get into another immediately.

Post by: Tebonas on June 17, 2015, 01:11:27 AM
That ousting of the CEO was the most realistic thing in the entire series, these things happen all the time once investors swoop up a start-up.

Also, there is a good chance the money guys don't care if the former CEO is a genius, the disregard money guys have for tech guys is legendary. They can think they will just need another tech guy or that tech thing is done and now its time to reap the rewards.

Not that this will necessarily happen, but both these scenarios are realistic and happened multiple times in Real Life.

Title: Re: Silicon Valley
Post by: Margalis on June 17, 2015, 09:25:36 PM
Not that this will necessarily happen, but both these scenarios are realistic and happened multiple times in Real Life.

A startup almost always starts with the founder as CEO and that almost never lasts. That part is fine.

However a startup would never set up such that after one round of funding investors had 3 votes (and one investor only put in 50k!) and they had 1. Which was the plan before they randomly gave Bachman a board vote.

Even if the CEO is a total idiot surely Jared would know enough business basics to point this out, as would any Google search.

Title: Re: Silicon Valley
Post by: Abagadro on June 17, 2015, 09:31:36 PM
Well, their funding cratered so they didn't have a ton of options or much of a bargaining position.

Title: Re: Silicon Valley
Post by: KallDrexx on June 18, 2015, 04:35:29 AM
While I think we are nitpicking about realism for a comedy show, I read all the times about startups who don't know any better making terrible choices when they take on investment.  Inexperienced people always do a shitty job at this stuff, and companies looking to invest and/or acquire you are out to take advantage of that to maximize the quality of their investment for the smallest amount of cost to them.

This show is painfully, PAINFULLY real.

"The product is the stock price!"

CEOs who care about marketing talent, not technical talent.

Abusing the fuck out of workers who know they're being laid-off before they're let-go.

Yet somehow it's still a comedy. Maybe in the Shakespearean sense of "comedy."

It's a comedy because it's only painful if you've lived it.

You guys are kinda missing a big factor. The actual Haversack Ruse engineered by Richard Meinertzhagen (see the title of the episode and Jared's reminder) was to "accidentally" lose battle plans to the Ottoman Empire that just happened to be completely fake. Allowed the British to win the Battle of Beershaba and Gaza.

I'm both pissed and impressed by that.

It's so geeky that there's no way I'd have gotten it. I had no idea what the Haversack Ruse was so I never would have gotten there, so I'm pissed at the ruse.

At the same time that's exactly the kind of geeky reference that I want more shows to have so I'm impressed it's there for those who know.

No, the one that 'shocked' Richard into walking into the power cord and tripping. I forget exactly what the words were, but the substance was accusing Dinesh of sodomy and incest with his mother. This is *completely* out of character for Jared.

EDIT: Just went and checked: "Hey Dinesh, nice chain, do you choke your mother with it when you put your penis in her butthole?"

I am actually glad that Richard's rant about Laurie didn't hit the Internet. That would have been a bit too painful, even for this show. I am wondering about Big Head's non-disparagement clause from his Hooli settlement though. Title: Re: Silicon Valley
Post by: Tebonas on June 29, 2016, 11:29:07 AM
Was it a Deus Ex ending, though? It was well established beforehand that Bachmanity bought the blog and it wasn't the first time Gavin Belson has a knack for unwittingly financing his rivals. I think even the fact that Laurie doesn't like Ehrlich was established previously, so that joke didn't come totally out of the left field, either.

But as you said, even if it was. That was a great finale to a great season.

But as you said, even if it was. That was a great finale to a great season.

The setup was too short time-wise, it was a too-perfect confluence of events to save Pied Piper. That's what made it a bit Deus Ex for me. (The Laurie comment, yeah, obvious after the fact and not part of the problem. She clearly doesn't like him any time they were onscreen.)

Elephant Dies, and the blog about to report it gets bought by Gavin for *just enough* that Bachmanity can save things but still remain flat-broke. This all happens in a matter of hours (ok a few days earlier on the death), and at just the right moments in just the right order.

There wasn't the set-up of some of the other "Gavin fucked-up" goofs because it all happened in the same episode. Made it feel too contrived rather than the usual "his own petard" setups.

It's a minor quibble, though. The elephant in the room was... the elephant.

T.J. Miller Takes Parting Shots at Silicon Valley Costar and Producer as He's Written Out of the Show (http://people.com/tv/why-tj-miller-left-silicon-valley/)
Quote
Despite amicably leaving, Miller wasn’t afraid to criticize the show that helped make him a star — complaining about its formula and making digs at writer and executive producer Alec Berg.

Asked if he ever had any conversations with Berg about making Erlich more essential to the group, Miller said, “I didn’t talk to Alec because I don’t like Alec.”

“I don’t know how smart [Alec] is. He went to Harvard, and we all know those kids are f—— idiots. That Crimson trash. Those comedy writers in Hollywood are f—— Harvard graduates and that’s why they’re smug as a bug,” Miller said. “I think that in television you usually have one element that is very challenging, very frustrating. It’s an obstacle, right? So you’re doing the best work that you can do. Alec was that for me, and I think I was that for Alec.”

Miller continued: “For me, television, unlike women and wine, does not get better with age. … I just thought that what the show has suffered from, what’s bad about it … it’s just the same thing over and over. … If they fail, then they succeed, and then if they succeed, they fail. It’s over and over. That’s an old type of sitcom. That’s Seinfeld, where Alec Berg used to work. It’s recycling, it’s network. This is HBO.”

Show is going to miss him -- I don't know who else is going to fill that role -- Jian Yang?

Title: Re: Silicon Valley
Post by: HaemishM on July 06, 2017, 01:54:52 PM
As funny as TJ Miller is and was in the role, I think the writers just didn't know what to do with the character. They couldn't seem to get him past the idiot who falls ass backwards into money stage.

While I still find the show funny, I think Miller does have a point about the writing being very circular. They can never have the guys completely succeed or fail to the point where it's almost an Every Week on Entourage (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0CdAKrTZ0A) sort of thing. I mean can they really have Richard be successful at creating a new Internet?

Yeah, I 100% agree with him and that was my concern at the start of the year and it played out. Next we'll see how their success in the final episode was really a failure and the cycle will begin anew. While the characters are growing, the need to keep them confined to the cycle so they have a reason to stay together is getting long in the tooth.
