Title: Rick and Morty
Post by: Paelos on January 13, 2014, 07:57:11 PM
Has anybody else seen this? I expected nothing and it turned out to actually be really funny in places. It's totally ridiculous, but Morty plays the perfect foil to Rick's insane-old-alcoholic-scientist.

I've seen the Christmas episode four times now and not one of the others.  It's beginning to bother me, but that one episode is better than what aqua teen has morphed in to over the last decade.

There was a recent episode where they get pulled into an alien holodeck by alien con artists that are actually complete idiots. The little jokes are everywhere and it's awesome.

Rick and Morty is a bonafide ratings hit for Adult Swim, beating out Archer last week.

All of the episodes aired so far are on youtube...  some legit (adult swim puts them up for a week or more free) and some are either semi-legit or not legit (youtube doesn't seem to be pulling them).  More people should be watching this!

It really is the best thing to come out of Adult Swim in ages.

It's amazingly funny, but I'm glad others are picking up on it! I hope they continue to do more.

This is a great, great animated show. Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland are knocking it out of the park.

It might not be my favorite animated show, but it's certainly the best one in that I can show it to anyone, it's way more accessible.

I might still like China, IL more. I dunno.

For whatever reason, I was dying in the after credits scene from the last episode where Rick and Summer go around beating up (and spitting on) people they don't like.  There hasn't been any classic lines so far in this half of the season though....  not like the Hemmingway line or <robot voice>"Where are my testicles, Summer?"

I seriously can't believe more people here aren't watching it.

They have new episodes of this out now. The one with Rick getting sent before the Council of Ricks was awesome. It's got a lot of moments where I find myself laughing loudly in my house, and that's rare. They are starting to flesh out the other characters too, which is a good thing.

Quite. Even the tag, which was funny, was dark when you think about it. He just can't get over her. They're REALLY exploring Rick as a character this season.

I watched the first episode on Uverse on-demand a few weeks ago.  Last night I saw that they only had episode 3 and later available.  Whoops!  So I watched #3 anyway.

Title: Re: Rick and Morty

Upon reflection I'm going to watch the next episode, but I'm not sure I like where this show is heading if they are going to start drilling down into reality of characters that live in a completely unrealistic set of scenarios.

Title: Re: Rick and Morty
Post by: Samwise on August 12, 2015, 10:57:45 AM
drilling down into reality of characters that live in a completely unrealistic set of scenarios.

What you just described is pretty much the essence of any good work of science fiction.

And yeah, since the first couple of episodes of this show I've been watching it more as science fiction that happens to be hilarious than as a comedy that happens to have a sci-fi premise.  So I love that they're continuing to explore new concepts as well as the consequences of all the completely bizarre shit they've introduced (like the Jerry day care logically following from all the alternate Ricks being in contact and having a large set of needs in common).

Title: Re: Rick and Morty
Post by: Merusk on August 12, 2015, 02:40:56 PM
I've only ever watched it as Sci-Fi comedy. It's part of the amazingness of the show to me, much like the science jokes that were in Futurama.

Watching my wife try to wrap her head around the multiverse of Ricks the first time was amazing, while it was only a natural sci-fi beat to me - who'd come across the premise before.

(like the Jerry day care logically following from all the alternate Ricks being in contact and having a large set of needs in common).

One of my favorite parts of that episode!

Title: Re: Rick and Morty
Post by: Miasma on August 12, 2015, 03:22:54 PM
I don't quite understand what Paelos is saying but I think he means it doesn't make sense to deeply explore characters since the plot has shown they are almost interchangeable with others (in the multiverse).

We're still watching even though we know Rick and Morty aren't even in their own universe anymore, their version of Earth got "Cronenberged" and they just replaced a Rick and Morty duo that got killed.  Their real family are fighting in a (Rick induced, Morty inspired) post apocalypse nightmare.

I'm okay with it though because I care about all the Rick and Mortys out there - that didn't sell out and join the trans-dimensional council of Ricks.

Edit: You know what, this show is doomed because it requires too many brain cells.

Title: Re: Rick and Morty
Post by: Paelos on August 13, 2015, 06:33:25 AM
I don't mind thinking about the characters, but the idea presented was that it was a comedy based on a series of insane sci-fi events.

The writers seem to be taking it into the real grimdark world of consequences of those comedic events. Which is not what I signed on for in a cartoon show. You can't take me on an episode of Family Guy and leave me with True Detective Season 1.

Title: Re: Rick and Morty

I had a long post halfway written breaking down all the "grimdark" stuff in the first season (starting in the pilot episode) so I could ask you what the hell you're smoking that you think that a bait and switch was pulled, but it started to feel eerily familiar and I remembered the Monopoly thread.   :awesome_for_real:

It was a very long and weird setup for a hell of a punchline, I'll give it that. I was bored waiting for the climax but that ending was fantastic. On the second viewing last night I caught that they'd put Mr Poopypants in the intro montage. Nicely done.

Rick is, of course.

Colbert suppressed his ego so his world would live.

Rick would have said, "Fuck this" and gone to an alternate universe or simply escaped and lived in the 'real' world.

It kinda bugs me that the Microversians didn't either hook up the Miniverse or some other power generation system to the same "waste power disposal" circuit as the goobleboxes (which they could still do now, for that matter), or figure out before inventing the Miniverse that the "waste power" thing was superstition and they could generate 80% more power with way less infrastructure by cutting it.

It briefly bugged me that Rick made his power generation dependent on manual labor rather than creating a solar array (or Dyson sphere or something) inside the microverse and drawing his power from that.  But then I realized that he probably did it that way for his own entertainment more than anything.   :awesome_for_real:

I thought the Jerry and Beth plot was pretty damn good.  Especially toward the end with them exploiting the "mythalogue" (or whatever they were) gizmo to a ridiculous degree.  That's the kind of goofy sci-fi shit that keeps me tuning in to this show.

My favorite thing about the Tiny Rick plot was the way they built up the vampire thing and then resolved it off-screen to fuck with the audience.   :awesome_for_real:

"Auto Erotic Assimilation" remains my favorite episode of the entire series and I don't ever expect them to top it, so at this point I'm just enjoying each new episode for what it is.

https://www.reddit.com/r/rickandmorty/comments/388hxx/will_rick_morty_air_in_the_uk/

- It was picked up by some UK channel
- You can watch some of the episodes for free on adultswim.  Region locked, so you don't get all episodes, but some are available for preview.  Pilot is mediocre, but everything after is pretty much gold.

Half the time I'll just buy episodes on Itunes if I'm asleep when its on.  I consider it a donation to keeping the show on the air.

I'm enjoying this season but...

The trouble with following Pickle Rick is that nothing can really follow Pickle Rick.

 :oh_i_see:

My favorite part of last night's episode was Morty stepping up and being the voice of sanity.  I'm sensing that he's getting a bit of a growing-up character arc this season, and I wonder if his line in last week's episode about Rick destroying his childhood was intended a little more seriously than it sounded.

As an aside, my favorite neighborhood bar has taken to showing Rick & Morty on the TV each Sunday night; it started off slow but word has gotten out and the place was packed last night.  I love it.

Weird one this week, I wonder if it was a clone Beth AND a clone Rick at the end of the episode.

Weird one this week, I wonder if it was a clone Beth AND a clone Rick at the end of the episode.

I got the feeling it was a clone Beth and didn't even contemplate it being a clone Rick, but of course the entire point of the ending is that it doesn't matter in the slightest.   :awesome_for_real:

Post by: satael on September 25, 2017, 01:29:43 PM
I don't think it matters whether it's clone or not (unless they decide to do something with it later). Just having the choice should make Beth mellow out (and accept that she's more Rick than she was previously willing to admit).

What that episode got me curious about is whether Beth has the potential to be as much of a dangerous genius as Rick.  Will "future Beth" show up at some point as an antagonist?

This show just continues to be fucking amazing. Making an episode about how nothing matters and then the resolution ending up really being that nothing matters is brilliant. Also, there's muppet fucking and baby eating and it's FUNNY.

You like that? How about an over the top and thoroughly detailed reverse engineered recipe for it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhc_bXGvmp0&t=214s)? The guy also has some actually worthwhile recipe versions.

Also I quite enjoyed the finale, I kind of get that they did the reset but we actually had a bit of character growth while getting back to the start. In that way it's been rushed but actually way better than most shows that go for putting the status quo back.

Babish is one of the only YouTube channels I watch every new video of. Him and Primitive Technology. Amazing channels.

Not sure how S1 is better to reset to than S2. I'll have to watch the series again to see, but I thought Beth was pretty hostile towards Jerry & Summer even then. This is a complete shift, regardless.

In so far as it serves as a starting-off point for adventures, who cares?  The show is better with a little more Jerry in our lives.

I was kinda disappointed as well.
Still a fantastic season.

Season 3 was supposed to be longer, but was cut down to 10 episodes and the last episode was a little rushed to get the season story line back where they wanted for season 4.  Supposedly was Dan Harmon dropping the ball rather than network interference.  People were pointing out the Citadel of Ricks episode would have been better as a season ender, but that didn't wind up the divorce storyline.

Citadel of Ricks was my second favourite and actually really, really needed some closure.

So, yeah, it should have been the finale.

I don't get why Pickle Rick is so great for you all? It started well, but went pretty quickly down to 'inter-dimensional cable' level quality. Which is not what I enjoy best about R&M, anyhow.

I put it on par with most of the other good episodes and a bit below their best.

Pickle Rick was awesome in all the ways that make the show absurd fun.

As for the finale, I thought it was a bit rushed but that the circle back around to the reset actually fit with a lot of the themes of the season, such as the ending of Pickle Rick.

Title: Re: Rick and Morty
Post by: taolurker on October 08, 2017, 06:38:43 AM
BTW in case any of you were wondering.. that McDonald's thing was TOTAL BS, and a huge bait & switch.

Me and a couple of friends went to our "participating" store, and they had no sauce, posters or anything. The clueless burger slinger at the restaurant near me was apologetic, and I assumed it was only my location that got stiffed, until I got home from there and saw it wasn't an isolated incident.

Restaurants got at most 20 packets of sauce, and many listed on their website weren't even participating (like the one near me that was visited). I was actually surprised there wasn't McDonald's stores being destroyed by riots after reading that this was not isolated, and happened nearly everywhere.

Huffpost article:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/mcdonalds-szechuan-rick-morty-fans-pissed_us_59d95604e4b046f5ad98aab3

I also tweeted angrily at McDonald's because of this, and get more upset the longer I think about the hundreds of thousands of Rick and Morty fans that McDonalds DUPED. Seriously wish I hadn't posted about it to you guys, and hope that none of you had a similar experience because of my post.

Title: Re: Rick and Morty
Post by: Samwise on October 08, 2017, 10:39:09 AM
Yeah, I went out to the McD's near me that was allegedly participating and they had handmade signs taped up saying they were out of the chicken tenders and all "promotional materials" (ie the posters and the sauce).  I agree they fucked up what was otherwise a very clever move, I hadn't gone into a McDonald's with the intent of buying something for maybe a decade.  They must've had a lot of other people showing up to ask about the goddamn sauce which led to them putting the signs up; I even saw a few people walking around the mall with their Rick & Morty t-shirts.

Title: Re: Rick and Morty

Anyone want to bet that this packet (http://www.ebay.com/itm/RICK-AND-MORTY-Authentic-McDonalds-Szechuan-Sauce-Packet-RARE-161-/182814749976?hash=item2a909bb518:g:xMAAAOSwfglZ2X3b) never actually crossed the counter at McDonald's? That some of the participating stores that "never got" their sauce have managers obsessively reloading their PayPal page?

Yes, $176 Buy It Now for a single packet of sauce.

Edit: Damn, I didn't think I was actually mad, but the number of typos I had to fix makes me think my subconscious is screaming.

I think this thread died because the show is just funny as fuck, but the fan base outside f13 is such a twisted bunch of monkey nuts that discussion of the show usually devolves into "HOW DID YOU NOT GET THE GENIUS OF RICK AND MORTY!!!!"

JC the snake episode was brilliant. From mocking the culture and Summer with “snake jazz” to taking a shit on all Sci Fi time travel stories. The 80’s. The Snake MIB and Snake College Guy.  Even the Jerry plot was better than usual. Love that he takes care of himself and doesn’t acknowledge the plane crashing.
