Space Engineers is a sandbox game about engineering, construction and maintenance of space works. Players build space ships and space stations of various sizes and utilization (civil and military), pilot ships and perform asteroid mining.

Space Engineers utilizes a realistic volumetric-based physics engine: all objects can be assembled, disassembled, damaged and destroyed.

Space Engineers is currently in alpha, and is expected on Steam's Early Access on the 23rd of October.

This is being made by the same group who made miner wars.

I shouldn't say it, but damnit that looks like fun.

It really does.

Already more gameplay footage than Star Citizen.

Ok ok, a cheap shot.  But seriously, this looks neat.  If Steam early access is cheap enough I could see myself picking it up.

Space Janitors :(

Do you fight eldritch horrors or just repair metal and poke at stone?

I just want one of these space station 13 remakes to finally hit steam.

Looks like a lot of grunt work to get sploded in such a short time.

Potential is there, more so than in most of the post-minecraft procedural sandboxes popping up. Already more gameplay than all but that Pimp Zombie one.

You see how much despair radiates off of that astronaut when that ship crashes into the thing he spent hours or maybe days building?  THAT is the game.

Couldn't I just buy a deck of cards with spaceships on the back and build a house of cards instead?

My interpretation of their first trailer was, "Spend hours painstakingly hand-crafting a custom space craft so you can watch a griefer destroy it in seconds."

Jesus, some of you are overly paranoid about "griefer ". For real. Seek help. I Say that because I care.

I say it because part of a game developer's job is worrying about that shit.

Remember Trammel and whatnot.

It's a multiplayer game, get better friends?

For a positive note: rather than clean up a pile of real cards, I can just turn the game off.

It could be fun, but there's a reason people turn off TNT in Minecraft.

People turn off TnT, like, on non-public servers? Who do you people hang out with?

On the other hand, you may be too accustomed to your own circle of friends; not everyone is lucky enough to have that set up to play online.

I know it's alpha but holy crap they need to make it much faster to build things.

This is being made by the same group who made miner wars.

I want to believe, but this line is killing me.  Space Engineers was what Miner Wars was supposed to be, too, roughly.  Turned out to be kind of hard, so they released it as a half finished mess, and now they're giving us the "no, really this time, we swear" pitch for the game Miner Wars was supposed to be, but which we'll have the privilege of buying at full price again?  Ughhhhh.

Game is up on steam now as a discounted Alpha (even moreso [15%?] if you were a miner wars buyer; to make amends for the fuckup their MMO dev. was in those regards).  I may pull the trigger now that it's basically $10 instead of $30.

Hmmm... couldn't find a newer thread for this.  Anyways lots of progress, update:

Programmable Blocks now Active. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYxiJUFRg_E)

Similar to notch's system.  You have a console block that compiles C/C#.  You can script behaviors to anything on the same grid and transmit stuff to players, etc.  Not sure of how far this thing can go, as I haven't had time to get into the game at all (also waiting for a check; need monies).  My miner wars fuckup coupon is gone sadly.

Anyone fooling with this thing?

I am, after initial blah, spending way to much time with this game. Playing in Survival mode. It's a tad slow (a lot of mining, make sure you bump up your inventory size) but there's a lot of stuff to do. Was getting annoyed with meteor swarms which kept putting a hole in my base so I discovered the joy of gatling turrets. Figured out how to mount a rocket launcher and a drill on the front of my ship (which way do I want to make this hole? Fast or slow?). There are automated ships I could go pirate and stuff which I haven't even touched yet nor have I tried multiplayer.

I think if they could speed up the construction process a tad and give us some more PvE stuff in single player it would be pretty damn kickass.

That or I may just go full nerd and build a Battlestar in creative mode.

I definitely have my eye on this, but no more early access, ever.

With all of the pistons and stuff you could actually build retractable launch bays too. Just sayin.

Dear god.

DOOMED.

I guess the main point of the new block is to handle a lot of stuff automagically.  Are those gats automatic from the get-go?  Or do you need to script them?
In your opinion, is the game far enough along for an f13 server??

I think the right group of f13 members might enjoy a space engineers server. There are no fantasy mods or npcs to kill though, so some people might be turned off...

With large worlds and the script blocks going active I'd assume the grognard creative types would be all over this.

Gats are automatic , except for needing ammo refills every so often. Occasionally when I hear the meteor storm warning I go up top on my station and watch them do their work.

Is it far enough along for an f13 server? As a building game I'd say definitely. If you want more to do than that? Then no, not really.

Well, any more to do than that would require self-motivation (organized scrims, politics, etc.)... which none of us are good at.

They announced  that they will also be developing Medieval Engineers  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJBYsv3sGAI)

Not sure how much I like this, but then I thought about designing big ass castles and knocking them down with catapults.

Help me.

Shouldn't they finish Space Engineers before dropping ANOTHER Early Access game on Steam?

Not that Medieval Engineers didn't make me feel all happy in the pants. Because it did.

Space Engineers will never be finished, it will evolve forever like Minecraft. In a way, it is already finished, people seem to love it and not many complain about it being Early Access or anything.

Title: Re: Space Engineers - MP, Voxel, Sandbox
Post by: Shannow on January 14, 2015, 01:13:34 PM
That was my initial feeling that they should finish Space Engineers first. If you buy the dev's explanation a lot of the technology is the same and SE won't suffer from the development of ME. Looking at the alpha footage that could be true (plus you can edit the actual terrain!) but let's face it these things never work out as well as the devs plan it.

Falconeer also has a point. SE is already a pretty damn good game, I've happily spent a LOT of hours over the last month playing it and haven't even touched multi-player. I bought it on sale for $10 and it's the best 10 bucks I've used for gaming in a looong time.

What would seal the deal is adding more depth and objectives to the gameplay, whether this come from devs or a good modder remains to be seen.

Now excuse me while I go back to fiddling with the new fighter craft for my space carrier..

I appreciate that they keep evolving the tech. into designs that may make a bit more sense, as long as they give precedence to those folk who were with them from the beginning (as they did with Miner Wars).  Though, Space Engineers has a tremendous upside; I also kinda fail too see why'd they'd dump development unless they planned on making it open source.  Perhaps they were waiting as long as they could for a big box publisher and never got one.  This may be the only biz model that keeps them afloat.

Make sure your carrier doesn't accelerate at more g's than your fighters landing gear can take.

They  added planets  (http://www.spaceengineersgame.com/space-engineers-now-with-planets.html)

Kinda wish they'd combine the two games so you could land your spaceship on a castle and terrify the peasants.

*prod* *prod*

This had been on my wishlist forever, so I picked it up on sale the other day. Played through the tutorials and was a bit 'meh', then fired up the default 'Quick Start' game. Start with a ready-made base with a turret, a few completed small ships and a couple of unfinished things. Hopped in the 'Deterrent' small fighter just as a tiny space pirate ship flew over and started harassing me. Chased it off, started mining with the mining ship, started putting things together.

All 'meh'ness banished, this is fun!
