'12 Monkeys' series reportedly headed to Syfy (http://www.theverge.com/2013/7/22/4546260/12-monkeys-series-reportedly-headed-to-syfy)

Quote
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that an adaptation of 1995's 12 Monkeys, the beloved post-apocalyptic film starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, is likely headed to the Syfy network. The new series will reportedly start with a 90-minute backdoor pilot, similar to Syfy's Battlestar Galactica, which is said to be followed by an initial season of eight to ten episodes. 12 Monkeys' original producers Chuck Roven and Richard Suckle reportedly submitted the pitch to the network, and 24's Jon Cassar will be tapped to direct the series.

Sarah Connor Chronicles was pretty okay.  You never know.

There's almost no way this won't be horrible. If it takes place in the present it will be Continuum with shitty, boring plots and the lowest production values you can imagine. If it takes place in the future it will be Cleopatra 2525 shitty, boring plots, even lower production values, and no distracting futureboobs.

This. As much as I loved the movie, it was a closed circle. There's no reason to explore that world again.

Served a purpose. This serves no purpose.

Glau is quite a good purpose.

Regardless, this will be dire. I wish SyFy would just get it over with and go bankrupt and fuck off and die.

Good enough for me.

That's what I was going say! "Won't this just be a shitty version of Continuum?"

I read a few blurbs that make me think the pilot retells the movie with some revisions, and the remainder of the series connects the two time frames, with a focus on the fall of society.  There could be stories to tell, or it could be weak.

I'd rather see them bring back Jericho.

Glau is the only purpose.

Well, her and Grace Park.

*cough*

So, anyone watching this? It's not terrible, but it's not fantastic either. Fairly typical SyFy stuff tbh - some of it is done pretty well and it's quite entertaining. However, when you're writing time travel stories I think it's absolutely crucial that the writers have a set of agreed-upon rules for how the time travel works, and that they stick to them, and it doesn't feel like that's the case here.

In fact, it's all going a bit timey-wimey.

If they finish it in 1 or 2 seasons with a definite ending then it might be OK. If they intend for it to be an ongoing series hoping to get renewed every year then it'll suck 12 monkey balls.

I'm watching and I like it.  Almost a lot.  The acting is good and I really like the main character.  I liked him in Traveler, too, but I don't know what happened to that show.  It disappeared.
Maybe not as good as the film, I think, but I didn't expect it to be.  I think you're right about it not being the sort of show that should last forever.  That would probably ruin it.  I'm liking the way that some series are being developed with a definite ending.  I'll NEVER go through another rambling series with a stupid ending like Lost.  Ever.

Yeah, I've been pleasantly surprised by the acting! It's the first time I've seen the guy playing Cole in anything and he's not bad is he?

Also, the Spearhead dude, Colonel Thingamabob, was in something short called The Booth At The End which was pretty good too.

He was Pyro in the X-men movies, he was also in Nikita. I like this show a lot, and was pleasantly surprised it actually got renewed with their lowish ratings.

Pretty much this. They're already having trouble with pacing, it'll just be weird if it goes longer then one or two seasons. Still a good show though, although I haven't seen the original movie... maybe that's why I can enjoy it.  :drill:

I gave it a shot - and stuck around so far although it is touch and go now.  The show seems to be wandering and the time travel rules don't make a lot of sense.  If you change the past it changes the future - sometimes?

Pagz, the original movie is well worth watching tbh, very well done. Hilarious early Brad Pitt performance.

Indeed. Terry Gilliam is at his best when people don't give him access to the script. Fisher King is my favorite, but 12 Monkeys is one of the greats. It's also easier to have a tight little mousetrap of a time travel plot in a movie than in a continuing series.

Ah, you are missing the important detail - they already changed the future you see, its all self fulfilling at this point. Or something. Maybe.

Right, the only way for the doctor to send the original message asking for Cole is if it already happened and didn't work.  In fact my guess is the garbled message actually says  "don't send Cole".

I spent a good two months after I saw that movie talking with my hands in a near permanent flipping of the bird.  :why_so_serious:

I've been enjoying this series. I'm not sure about how I feel about some things that happened in the last episode or two.
