If they give me £20 I'll think about installing Origin.

You realize most of the price difference is because of rules in your own country and has nothing to do with the companies making the games?

Ummm.... no, you're incredibly wrong.

The price difference is on some games from some publishers. A lot of games are sold online at US price. I can buy a Blizzard or Valve game online at US pricing. I can't buy an itunes song at US costs. When Boarderlands 2 was on sale, the cost discrepancy was about $20, yet many other games aren't. It's not to do with our regulation of violent games, that has changed and L4D2 via Steam cost US prices. We get gouged because they feel they can and sometimes it's over a 30% mark up (so it isn't our GST).

A version of Windows or Office can cost more and don't get me started on some of the higher end software. On occasion I've written to companies saying that I was going to buy their software but won't due to the inequity. Most of the time they drop the price and I download the software at US cost.

Kotaku has an interesting view of it - there's a lot of BS and dodging taking place in the article, but it certainly isn't our regulations.

By the way, the Kiwis get shafted too.

Of course, you want the best example? It's right here from Green Man Gaming when the price of XCom and BL2 miraculously increased for Aussies and Kiwis:

Quote
Recently, a number of our readers noted that the price for Borderlands 2 and XCOM: Enemy Unknown had been raised on Green Man Gaming, with a specific new ANZ price that was a good $20 higher than it used to be. Green Man have now addressed the issue in a short post on their blog, blaming the price rise on 2K Games.

“We have had a number of enquiries about price increases on Borderlands 2 and XCOM Enemy Unknown in Australia and New Zealand.”

“This was done at the request of the publisher based on local retailer feedback. We would rather not have had to do this but we really value the relationship with our publishing partner.”

The current price for the game means that it is actually cheaper at the moment to head down to a “local retailer” and purchase a boxed copy than to have a digital one delivered over the internet, which is indefensibly stupid. That said, Borderlands 2 is currently on sale for 50% off on GMG for the next 24 hours, which means you only pay $35 instead of the new $72.

Since we announced our partnership with Green Man Gaming earlier in the month with the intention of delivering best prices for Australian gamers, we must express our disappointment at 2K’s decision to enforce an unfair regional pricing model that gouges Australians for no reason — a regional pricing model that is currently under investigation by the Australian Government.

We’ve asked 2K Games for comment on the matter and will let you know if we hear anything back.
