Title: Puzzle Craft
Post by: Xanthippe on December 23, 2012, 01:28:28 PM
Downloaded this (iPhone) yesterday and have been playing it a great deal since. By a company called Chillingo.

The 'crafting' minigame reminds me of the Free Realms games.

Very fun, although I don't see how they make any money on this at all - it's free, and I don't see why a person would spend real money on it.

Here's an article on Gamasutra about it (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/180102/the_evolution_of_puzzle_craft.php)

Apparently it was free when I downloaded it, but maybe not now? At any rate, I would actually pay 5 bucks for this one.

Warning: there's a game named Puzzle Craft on the Google Play store (Android) that is not the same game.

This was still free for iOS. I grabbed it and there went my night. Totally addicting little game, spent almost 3 hours on it in one sitting.

Free but IAPs built in.

I hate IAPs unless it's DLC

Interesting, I had to look up IAPs. About 4 hours so far and haven't felt the need to buy anything, and can't see a reason I would just yet.

What's an IAP?

When I've played, it's been continuous, without running out of anything so I have to stop playing or pay money - which is why I say, I don't know how they're making money on this game. Giving it away, being able to play endlessly without buying anything.

I actually enjoy the craft-grind or whatever puzzle. It's fun enough to play.

I will admit to a fondness for semi-mindless clicking (like minecraft or knitting needles with yarn attached). I like playing this while pretending to pay attention to people clamoring for my attention. Which has been happening all too often lately. Bah, humbug!

In-App Purchase - aka "microtransaction" (though most trans aren't so micro since the minimum Apple let's you charge is 99 cents).

This is essentially the same game as Wargames: WOPR (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wargames-wopr/id528382306?mt=8) though with a resource management and village building element that adds a lot.  I don't know which one came first, though that puzzle mode is not that new I am sure anyways but I can't think of earlier games on the top of my head.

Ah, thank you.

Very addictive ( darn you!).  Haven't needed to pay a cent after playing for 5 - 6 hours.

I'm annoyed that all the work I put into being able to mass-produce apple pies was ultimately useless.

There's a new patch for this, bringing max level to 60, as well as new tools, buildings, stuff to find, etc.
