Prediction: Nintendo will steal the show with Wii U.  The press and general public will rave about it.  Gamers themselves...not so much.

MS will do another "OMG IT'S KINECT!" press show.

Sony will still be apologizing for failure.

How?

Do people really still want this gimmicky shit? How's the Wii selling?

This is the saddest Microsoft E3 presentation I've seen in years.

"Hey, you wanna pull up a map of the Game of Thrones universe being live updated by some wage slave data entry grunt? GOOGLE MAPS BING MAPS THAT SHIT."
"Hey, if you pay hundreds of dollars for a fucking Windows 8 tablet you can have some useless utility for games! Hang on guys, I know this is the 200th time we've played this map, but lemme pull up a useless map of this ship and read lore!"
"Here's some shit that Netflix was doing like 3 years ago!"

Ascend looked AWFUL. Like pre-beta awful.

MS will do another "OMG IT'S KINECT!" press show.

So far you've been pretty correct.   Just about every game that's had a demo instead of being just a trailer has shown how it works with X-box

I'll confess I'm intrigued by the South Park game, though.

Matt Stone and Trey Parker do not want to do South Park anymore and have not wanted to for something like 5-6 years now.

They looked flat out pained to be doing this game.

I don't know if people want it. I may, it had some neat features in the home entertainment realm. It undercuts WII-U because it looks like a direct answer to it. I wonder if Nintendo has something else about WII-U to show. I think the WII does well as far as sales go.

Two second google numbers:

Quote
Worldwide sales figures

    Wii – 95.85 million as of 31 March 2012[8]
    Xbox 360 – 65.8 million as of 12 January 2012[52]
    PlayStation 3 – 63.9 million as of 31 March 2012[5

Matt Stone and Trey Parker do not want to do South Park anymore and have not wanted to for something like 5-6 years now.

They looked flat out pained to be doing this game.

The intro joke was rather brilliant. I don't know about this "They don't want to do it anymore", they could remedy that easily.

If you're making tens of millions a year reliably churning out shit and signed a really long contract I imagine it's hard to just quit.

It's pretty clear they want to do ANYTHING but South Park. The only time I've seen them look remotely happy in interviews is the whole phase where their musical, "The Book of Mormon" was doing ridiculously well.

I know that, but I'll cry for them when they stop signing the renewal contracts and walk away from the money.   They haven't yet and they signed a renewal agreement through 2016 just last year.

Also: IE for Xbox. lol
That actually is a big deal. Here's what I wrote back in 2006 :awesome_for_real:

Honestly, I think we are getting closer and closer to a merge. Pretty soon it wont be console vs PC, cause they console will be your PC. Look at xbox live on the 360, this is the first step IMO to merging the two machines. How long is it going to be really until we have one box and a nice TV? Not long. Also, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GIVE ME A MOUSE AND KEYBOARD FOR MY XBOX.
Not going to happen as long as Microsoft can and continues to charge monopoly prices for its OS. It would be financial suicide for MS to allow people to run general applications on the Xbox/Xbox 360. Just imagine what would happen to MS's (and Intel's) stock if you could run IE and hook up a printer to a $299 Xbox 360.

So for MS to put IE on the Xbox to me means they see the writing on wall and the Windows gravy train at the consumer level is coming to an end.

I had much the same reaction - my jaw hit the floor once he hacked the traffic signals.  They showed it at the Ubi conference, and while what they showed was running on PC, they've listed platforms as PC/360/PS3.    I'm kind of surprised that something that clearly has a LOT of money wrapped up in it has been so far under the radar until now.

I wonder if this is what they did with all that work on Splinter Cell: Conviction that got canned when they shuffled it off to another studio and rebooted it.

I like how the character benevolently saved the guy who was trying to revive his girlfriend who seems to have been killed in uh, you know, the fucking traffic accident HE CAUSED.

It's super cool, but it reeks of scripting. I'll be truly impressed if you can wait for the guy to actually get there and THEN pull some shit.

prerendered gen, perhaps.

i fear the game may turn out too much of a pre-scripted "use this ability here or else, watch 5 minutes of cutscene, repeat" sequence with some window dressing, but i guess give it a couple of years and we'll see. Maybe.

The naval battle in Assassin's Creed 3 looks amazingly fun.  We'll see.
We turned on the tv in the middle of the AC3 naval battle and both of us were impressed, though I kept trying to figure out how much was actual gameplay. Just looked stunning, and I was hoping it was a new Pirates! title, honestly. Then they wrapped up the clip and said AC3 and I was all "Whu?".

Last of Us looked cool until they bleep bombed the shit out of things and I had to mute the tv before my cat clawed my face off. Dead Space 3 also got unnecessarily swear-bomby. I guess swearing is cool again?

And Watch Dogs...yeah. Please let them not screw that one up too much.

Seriously this was a terrible e3.

It says a lot that Ubisoft had the best conference. They ate everybody's lunch and dominated the conferences the others they cameo-ed in. If Konami had done one and it was competently managed I would say we are near the end times.

I can't wait to see "Watch Dogs" multiplayer.

Watch Dogs was extremely pretty, using the hacking angle to add a strategic layer could be interesting and even the dialogue was tight and well done.

More motivation for a PC update.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mr4D4YZQ9uY

To me this looks like a Neo-Geo game from 1994 brought into the modern era. (That's a good thing in my eyes)

More general thoughts: All conferences sucked, IPs being ridden into the ground, long costly development times means most of what we see at E3 is from the last E3. MS has shown essentially the exact same lineup for 3 years now, zero big surprises, rumored surprises (Retro game, Gaikai/D3 for PS3) all no-shows.

That said maybe a lot of stuff on the show floor will be cool, I'll find out since I'm a cool guy who goes to E3!

Watch Dogs exploded out of nowhere earlier on Monday, impressing us with its slick portrayal of cyber-crime and assassination in an always-online Chicago. The Ubisoft press conference demo left everyone with questions about the final few moments. In a scene that doesn’t appear in the demo footage that Ubisoft have since released, the camera pulled back from the action and started following a different person entirely. Was it the same player taking charge of another character, or a second player controlling their own avatar in the same city?

It was a second player. VG247 have spoken to him. His name is Dominic Guay, executive producer on the game. “Online is in the DNA of Watchdogs,” he said. “It’s super important to us. We couldn’t announce our game and not at least tease online.”

“Basically, Jonathan, our creative director was playing agent Pearce at the conference, and I was playing another character, who hacked into him, who had his own objective and we crossed paths. It was basically two players who crossed paths with their own objectives.”

In the conference demo, the character that Guay was playing watched the carnage that Jonathan was causing from afar. After apparently scanning Johnathan’s brain, he turned and vaulted over some rooftops in a different direction entirely, it sounds now as though he was pursuing an entirely different mission in the same city.

It’s a situation that doesn’t fit neatly into your traditional “co-op” and “competitive” multiplayer pigeon holes, but the idea of players interacting through co-incidence and experiencing the collateral damage of each other’s independent objectives is intriguing.

“We definitely want to blend in multiplayer online and singleplayer in ways that haven’t been done before,” says Guay. We’ll be hunting down more info on Watch Dogs as E3 progresses. Meanwhile, here’s the Watch Dogs demo, albeit without that multiplayer tease that Ubisoft threw into their live presentation at the end of Monday’s conference.

I tried Planetside 2. The shooting works, that is good.

Defiance is not bad. I used a PS3 controller (lol shooter), but it seems more rpg with a shooter slant. More shootery than Tabula Rasa, though.

Activision Blizzard's market value is 3 times that of EA's so that would be quite the feat if EA acquired them.

Zynga-Activision-Blizzard.

Zynga has roughly the same market cap as EA.

The only way that configuration could be more fucking evil is if they hired the Good Doctor and our Favorite Banned Vole Fucker to create an MMOG.

I want to watch it all burn in an orgy of smashed Coke machines and weasel rape.

I have no ego on this matter.  Knock yourself out.  It's a good line.

There's room in there for both. Abuse the privilege.

They already have the English Guy With Sunglasses, so it'd be about perfect.

I tried Planetside 2. The shooting works, that is good.

You should have said hi, I was on the same stand giving demos of Bullet Run.

I got a UE4 demo (the only time I got away from the booth as it happens) and it was amazing. Ran like crap on the demo machine but the tools are incredible.

Why would vivendi want to sell off a cash cow?

Because that cashcow has peaked and I'd wager not a single soul inside Vivendi likes anyone at Activision, the top manufacturer of deadbeats and assholes in the gaming industry.

Seeing discussion on Lum's Broken Forum made me Google the trailer for the new Tomb Raider game.

Good Christ, when did they decide to let Eli Roth direct a Tomb Raider game? What... the... fuck?

I was pretty bummed when I saw that footage. Tomb Raider Underworld was a really great game hampered by some awful action sequences. I got stalled at the extensive motorcycle stuff and never went back to it, and it's still the showpiece of 3d gaming.

There's some impressive looking stuff in that trailer, but nothing about it made me even remotely think of Tomb Raider. Not even her boobs.

I enjoyed the comments that went, "I've never liked Lara Croft because she was always so good at everything, but now she's bleeding and crying and fighting off rapists, she's more believable".

I made a good choice going on vacation to the beach and a national park during all this.

Just based on what little I have gathered, gaming has almost grown up.  Sometimes we will get a Dark Knight but usually we will get a Failure To Launch or Leonard Part VI.  Long live the garage game developer!

Speaking as an old man, I dislike that 'grown up' has become a synonym for 'Shit.'

Title: Re: E3 2012
Post by: HaemishM on June 26, 2012, 08:47:31 AM
It's actually a synonym for money-grubbing shitcocks getting involved on the business end and focus-group strip-mining every available commodity for the last goddamn micro-penny they can get out of a property.

But "shit" does encapsulate it succinctly.

I don't know if there is a separate term for maturity of an industry versus a person.  However, both become more hateful and loathsome over time.
