Title: Continuum
Post by: Bunk on June 04, 2012, 06:39:06 AM
You guys even getting this down there? http://continuumtheseries.com/ (http://continuumtheseries.com/)

Time travel scifi filmed and set in Vancouver. Basic premise is that 70 years in the future, the government is gone and everything is run by corporations. Terrorist group trying to "liberate" the people gets arrested after blowing up buildings. They rig their execution to trigger time travel back 6 years to try to change history. Young cop (Rachel Nichols) fucks up the process and gets sucked in to the portal with them, sending them all back to 2012 instead.

It's being done by Showcase, which generally means a more adult oriented show than broadcast network. Seems a little formulaic in areas, but there's some potential twists.  My first thought would be that they would be jumping all over the "evil corporations" thing - yet the show has the "liberal" terrorists clearly cast as remorseless killers, and the cop as working for the corps. Will be curious to see where they go with that.

No we don't get it down here which is too bad cause I would watch it just for Rachel Nichols :awesome_for_real:

The eponymous Judge Dredd movie would be a huge hit if JD looked like Rachel Nichols.  :why_so_serious:

Seriously - this is Judge Dredd in drag, with a time travel twist.
Protagonist fascist super-cop (with cool gear and guns) taking down liberal terrorist scum.

First three episodes have been very watchable, as I'm starting to like it I suspect it will either get cancelled or start turning turning really dumb.

I like this one, I don't get how I could be against the terrorists though, given what we saw about the future.  Not being able to identify with the corporate crony somewhat diminishes my enjoyment, even if they try to make the terrorists as cruel as possible to make me biased against them.

Anyone else watching this?

I just finished the first few episodes.

Crime fighting agent gets time-traveled back to 2012 with a group of terrorists (terrorists are fighting for 'rights' in a corporate controlled future).

Time-traveling anti-terrorism buddy-cop set in Vancouver.  With a female lead that does a lot of sad-eyes staring.

I like it because they introduce some fun may-be-possible future tech (time travel device notwithstanding).

Yep, I like this show.  It's not OMGBESTSHOWEVER but it's fun to watch.  The season just ended as well, looking forward to next season!

Just finished the season.

So, did they just like snap up every actor from X-Files that wasn't working and call it a day?

Yea, pretty much. We apparently have a somewhat limited pool of actors here.
Was fun getting to watch a show in Vancouver actually set there - even if the downtown police station is actually the entrance to one of our sports arenas.

Syfy To Acquire Canadian Sci-Fi Drama ‘Continuum’ (http://www.deadline.com/2012/08/syfy-to-acquire-canadian-sci-fi-drama-continuum/)

They will just dub in Seattle every time someone mentions Vancouver, and it will all work out.  :why_so_serious:

I didn't think they were allowed to show science fiction on that channel. Still, probably a good thing for the show overall.

I grew up in the area all the farm scene's are set in. Same town as Smallville.

At least they aren't pretending to be in the US.  I was pretty happy with this and wil give it a go some more episodes.  But whats next for Liberate kicking puppies?

Second Season just started up last night. I already like where it's going, though I get the feeling by the time this show runs its course, my head will be broken with all the future self/past self stuff going on.

Show in general is really good. People should watch.

I watched the first episode.  I liked it.  My only question is, why do we pronounce it "continu-um" but we don't pronounce vacuum "vacu-um"?  Is it just a mystery?

This show does something I find very rare on TV.

It surprises me.

What I mean is, usually, even on shows that try to keep you guessing or twisting, I can usually see whats coming more or less. There's always a cliche or a trope or an attempt to circumvent said cliche or trope...

With this one, I don't actually know where they are going to take this... and that's refreshing.

And this show continues to surprise.
I was a little worried in the first season that this show wouldn't have anywhere to go, with the apparent team A vs Team B plot line, but they've really started to develop an interesting story here.

Just finished blowing through season 1 and am now completely onboard and trying to figure out where to find season 2 eps online.  First episode or three was the token setup, but after that, the series really takes off and begins to shine with surprises and an increasingly deep storyline. Absolutely fantastic.

US is a bit behind Canada on this one,  and looks like the first half of season 2 is at least available via VOD on Directv,  so I'm all set.

Title: Re: Continuum
Post by: jgsugden on July 25, 2013, 11:31:37 AM
It reminds me a bit too much of Time Traxx....  but I have been sticking with it.  It tends to build up on my DVR and then I burn through 5 episodes over 2 weeks.  Pretty good for Syfy in the US.  I wish they'd be able to show it at the same time it is released in Canada.

We're shortly past a major turning point for Julian. I'm trying to stay vague. I like it a lot though I am definitely getting a "everything they do is just creating the future she came from" vibe. A lot of predestination feel to all of this.

Title: Re: Continuum
Post by: Bunk on August 13, 2013, 09:41:00 PM
Yea, I'd like to talk about the finale now that I've seen it, but I know many people here have no spoiler tag self control.

It did not go how I expected it to. This show to me is a great example of a second season massively improving upon the what they did in the first season.

Title: Re: Continuum

I know, isn't it great?

Usually when a show leaves on a cliff hanger like that, I sorta just roll my eyes and wait for them to reset it all back to 'normal'. With Continuum, what the fuck is the norm here? I don't know!

That's refreshing.

So I've binge watched *all* of this over the last 3 days, in the background while working. It's pretty good, although it took some time to really get going. It's now on my watch list!

Also, I regularly criticize other shows for sexism &/or racism, not this one! No siree, not one bit.

Probably good its getting a 6 episode finale. They are about as far down the rabbit hole as the audiance is likely to follow them so now this gives them enough to wrap it up with a big finish.

I'm three episodes into season 2 and I've gotta get something off my chest. This show is merciless with its redshirts. Grunts die by the dozen all the time and nobody feels it. Cops losing their own is a huge deal anywhere, but (to this point) in Continuum it's like meh, another three SWAT officers, plenty more where those came from. Other than that, I'm having a good time. Thanks for the heads-up.

The Countess and I are watching this through a second time and it's well worth it. Amazing how much stuff gets missed or forgotten between episodes that you get when you just sit through it pretty much straight. We are doing mostly one per night, skipping weekends and doubling on cliffhangers.

Very worthwhile show.  Lots of believable future stuff mixed in with crazy scifi shit.
