Title: Crafting (or Don't Crush That Dwarf, Hand Me The Pliers)
Post by: Xanthippe on May 31, 2012, 10:25:06 AM
It seems the early rush is slowing, and now lower level items are not quite as plentiful. (It probably still makes more sense to use the AH than craft at this point, but I assume this will not continue to be the case as inflation kicks in).

From what I gather, plans drop in Inferno (not just off mobs, stumps too).  Has anyone seen plans drop, other than the pony staff? Does one have to have crafting maxed in order to find plans?

I've had a yellow helm, shoulder, and shield recipe drop and I used them all (they all required a level 10 blacksmith but they dropped while my smith was 8 so they can drop even if your smith isn't maxed). I haven't seen any Jewelry recipes.

I found two blacksmith plans (three counting staff of herding) and did not have blacksmith maxed - both were found in inferno, and both are for level 60 items. (The plans were orange colored and dropped in inferno Act I).

Why would anyone bother with crafting other than to fill in while leveling up? I'm particularly puzzled by these items, since they make level 60 gear. According to the tool tip, the stats are really low. Is there some modifier that makes the armor levels higher or something?

Base stats are static I believe. What causes awesome items are the mods (a 400-500 damage weapon getting a 400-500 damage fire enchant in one slot would be awesome, for example. Moreso if another slot was +attack speed or +primary stat)

Armor can get +armor mods that easily double the base armor value. All that said: the crafting system is still a giant fucking money sink with the AH right next to you. For the price of 3-4 rolls of the dice, I can just buy exactly what I wanted usually.

I only upgrade my crafters because I like how the higher level wagons and tables look.  Luckily the highest level blacksmith looks crappy so I won't bother spending the money.

ORANGE YOU SAY?!? What plans have you found? You might be a billionaire and not know it.

Er, yellow. They were exalted something or others - dread shield and exalted something helm. I think they're just your basic shitty level 60 armors. Looks like each one would "cost" something like 50-100k to make so I'm not even going to try.

I got a 2nd helm plans drop today (same one I already have) so I suppose they're not exactly rare.

Yeah I'm not really thrilled by the fact that recipes apparently don't drop until late regardless of when the actual item is usable.

The yellow recipes have different tiers. Exalted X is the worst, then Exalted Fine and lastly Exalted Grand. The difference is the amount of random properties, it goes from 4, to 5, to 6. The grand recipes are worth a lot.

Do recipes only drop once one has hit 60? Or only in inferno? Or what?

I think there's some below 60 recipes, but they're legendary and thus drop with the same regularity as other below 60 legendaries. The yellow plans are all from inferno and have a better drop chance.
