Title: Staff of Herding
Post by: Phred on May 16, 2012, 05:12:54 PM
Just got the recipe for this. Will need a lot of rare items for it though.
It needs
1 wirt's bell
1 black mushroom
1 liquid rainbow
1 gibbering gemstone
1 leoric's shinbone.
50,000 gold

We know the mushroom can spawn in the cathedral. Let's try to make this thread a record of where to farm to find the other pieces.

Ok after a bit of perseverance, we have found the secret land. Its known as Whimsyshire and upon gaining entry you get a feat of strength along with a banner and sigil. I wont spoil too much but here is reason enough to complete that staff. You can also run the level as many times as you want as far as I can tell.

Hunters:
Zerofirezelo
Barbro
Phantar
Sethion

The items needed:
Black Mushroom spawns in cathedral level 1 ACT1

Shinbone is located randomly in the fireplace in leorics manor ACT1.

Liquid Rainbow is located from the Mysterious Cave in the Mysterious chest in the Oasis in ACT2. You will know its the right place when you save the old man and he opens it up. the spawn point is always the same for the event.

Wirts Bell is sold from one of the merchants in the city on ACT2

Gibbering Gemstone drops from Chiltara in the caverns of frost ACT3(The area where you destroy the ballistae) if you get Ice caverns exit out and start a new game. The mob itself is random.

The plans drops randomly from Izual on ACT4.

Opening the portal I will leave that up to you.

What is considered to be Cathedral level one?  I go straight from Leoric's passage to Cathedral level two...

Cathedral level on is before you find cain.

I also just got the plans for the staff, can't wait to kill cuddly bears.

Just farmed up everything you need for this; took me ~5.5 hours. The plans were the hardest for me; I killed Izual at least 20 times before they finally dropped. Waiting for some friends to be available to actually go do the level.

Izual is the angel boss in Act4? Well played Blizz. Well played.

Think he means that Izzy was the angel boss in act IV in D2 as well.

Also, plans dropped first time for me.  ;)

Upgrading the staff from Normal to Nightmare took another 200k, but some friends chipped in and we got that done. Nightmare ponies are brutal!

If anyone wants me to let them into either the Normal or NM pony level, just let me know in game (my battletag is in the thread).

I got mine today and the legendary sword Spectrum - not very good but fantastic graphics. Do you always get one in there, or is it a much higher chance of dropping or something?

I ran the zone twice on normal and 3 times on Nightmare, all with full parties of 4. Not once did we get a legendary sword.

I feel your pain, no luck getting the guy to spawn in the Caverns of Frost for the Gemstone for me :(

I got the liquid rainbow through playing normally, and the plans didn't take long to get either. (30 minutes maybe?). The hard bit was the Caverns of Frost which took 3 hours easily.

Title: Re: Staff of Herding
Post by: Rendakor on May 19, 2012, 08:00:21 PM
Caverns of Frost was kind of a pain for me too; the first ~10 times I entered the zone I got Icefall Caves instead, to the point where I was wondering if I was in the right place. Once the right cave actually spawned, I got it in 2 runs.

I just got the Plans on NM.

Warning: they are white, I almost missed them.

Haven't bought the bell, but since i can buy it I don't care. I can not for the life of me get the fucking alchemist to spawn in the Dalghur Oasis so the Liquid Rainbow evades me. Goddamn rainbows. Have everything else already.

Managed to spawn the alchemist 4 times - yet to get Liquid Fucking Rainbow. Those 4 runs have taken at least 150 logout cycles.

Take how many hours the game has been out for and then maybe subtract sleeping time.

Wrong, I've been to a few Magic tournaments and have gotten ANOTHER job. I'm just very, very efficient with my time.

I didn't notice the question. Efficiency means selective reading I guess. Looks like 19 hours on one toon and 9 on the other. I have no clue if time in the menus is counted, but I imagine it is based on whatever character is selected. I leave the game open a lot. That said, I spent about 7 hours total on my Shadow Hunter trying to get the fucking Staff of Herding. Almost all this last weekend.

Yeah everything else wasn't too bad to farm.  Took me three hours for frost caves and it sounds like I was one of the luckier ones.

Got into Whimsyshire tonight by joining a PUG.

I had lvl8 Wizard and I joined an Act1 co-op.  A level 46 was there and he opened the rainbow chasm.  Good times.  Got a level out of it and some middling loot.

Just done collecting all the pieces for this as well as the crafting plans, after a mind-numbing amount of runs to get the gemstone from the cave and the plans from the boss in Act IV. I earned about 200,000 gold from grinding for these things. Which was a good thing, considering one of the ingredients costs 100,000 and the crafting process itself costs 50,000 =P

I'm nearing the end of act four nightmare so I need to decide whether or not to spend the 200k.  It's a good zone to farm but only becomes available at the end of a difficulty mode so wouldn't it be better to just start into hell mode rather than spend the money on an extra nightmare zone?

Well, you are going to want to do it eventually, since I think the Hell version is really worth running.  I'd say until you max out your character though your best choice is just to keep working towards max/hell.

The liquid rainbow is taking me FOREVER to find.  Does anyone know where in the Mysterious Cave the chest usually spawns, i.e., first or second floor?

Title: Re: Staff of Herding
Post by: Merusk on May 28, 2012, 09:47:41 AM
Diablowiki says first floor, possibly 2nd. Rather than waste time I've just been going for the first floor. Not there, try again.  It's a rare spawn of a rare spawn, kinda sucks.

Ran through Whimsyshire during lunch - my second trip there. First trip got me 6 rares. This trip, no rares - but 1 legendary (http://us.battle.net/d3/en/item/heart-of-iron). Equipped it to get the achievement - now I'll probably sell it since I can't see a use for it :P

I got lucky, and managed to get the pattern, and the gemstone this afternoon, and headed over to Whimsyshire.  I've got to say, it's the most disturbing level in the game, in it's own strange way.

Okay I just got my first legendary, a level 41 belt.  There were more than FORTY SIX PAGES of them already on the auction house...  I had to lower the buyout to see the further pages.

So is the Staff a One time, use, and if so, under what conditions?

I am assuming it is probably something like once per account, per Difficulty level (upgrade it to do it again on next difficulty level)?  Or can you use it multiple times per difficulty level?

The staff is account bound and you can use it as often as you want.

Trying to get the gem from the frost caves is destroying my will to live. The mushroom and the liquid rainbow took me at least an hour each, I got lucky with the shinbone I guess.  I've spent 5 hours or so on the gem and just want to stab someone.

I am, yes.  Load up on the correct quest, take the nearest waypoint, run to spawn area(s)  If not there, quit and repeat.

Only have the bone and the mushroom so far and I've only seen the mystic cave guy once.   I need speed boots to move around quicker.

I don't think this has been mentioned here, but you do need an upgraded staff for each mode, NM and Hell. I don't even know if there's an Inferno level.

No matter which mode the plans drop in, when you build the staff, it is for Normal.

No, you don't have to gather the ingredients again. You do have to buy the upgraded plans from the blacksmith in Nightmare Act IV after beating Diablo for 1g. Then the new mats for the Nightmare Staff is the Normal staff plus $200k.

Finally got this today. Quite fun, particularly the reactions of my family as I went in for the first time.

Oddly, the Liquid Rainbow/ Mysterious Cavern was the hardest part.  Iz dropped the plans on the 4th try and the right caverns were in the fields of slaughter on my first trip.  The cavern, however, took me an hour and a half of reloads just to get the first time, then another half hour of reloads to get the chest.
