Dear God, why?  It hasn't even been that long, has it?

Looks like it might be taking itself a wee bit too seriously; I'm betting there are no triple-breasted whores in this version.

Could be interesting, wondering if they dropped the whole mars angle and are just going for a mindfuck adventure movie.  Also, CGI fight scenes look like shit.

Yeah, can't say I'm overly excited about this. Might be more interested if it didn't star Farrell.

Before I watched the trailer I saw that as Ferrell. I screamed a little.

Different type of movie, of course, but Colin Farrell really redeemed himself with In Bruges for me. There is still hope.

Dear God, why?  It hasn't even been that long, has it?

Because budgets are so inflated and the stakes are so high that Hollywood is totally risk averse.  We've been over it before here and you can find any number of creative people who say the same thing and explain it's why they're doing the latest remake/ sequel/ leaving the industry.

Why did Rob Zombie do Halloween?  Nobody wanted to fund his other movies.  Why is Kevin Smith making this latest movie his last?  He is sick of design by focus group instead of storytelling.  Why are we getting a Spiderman Reboot 10 years after the original? Because new projects are risky and that one has a track record of several hundred millino dollars.  Why will there be a Transformers 4 (Announced in Feb, 2012 for 2014) and possibly 5 despite Michael Bay sucking horribly?  Because the 3rd movie is the #4 all-time grosser  (http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/world/)and combined the movies ALONE have made 2.6 BILLION dollars.

If you ever have to ask, "why," in regards to a movie; just know that's the answer.

I take it we're not going to Mars this time?

I had to Google In Bruges, never even heard of it.

It's a fantastic movie, and proved to me that Farrell could act. He just annoys the piss out of me. I think I'm still annoyed at SWAT.

So, the movie is either Chuck + Bourne Identity or...

The whole thing takes place in the Rekall facility.

How exciting.

(And marginally like the original story.)

Yeah, In Bruges was awesome which is giving me hope for Farrell

I read she's back, so that's one good thing at least

I actually like the Director's cut of Daredevil.  But Farrell was just bad as Bullseye.

Does it cut Ben Affleck out of the movie?

I didn't have a problem with Affleck as Murdoch.  Though I do have a problem with him in general.

Farrell and Affleck did fine with the material they had in Daredevil, and the director's cut absolutely made the movie better (from like a 2.5 stars to 3.5 stars maybe). But the writing was terrible, the direction pedestrian and the fact that Sony didn't even want him in a costume until midway through filming so they had to go back in and digitally enhance the color on the costume to make it look like a costume instead of some leathers should tell you all you need to know about why it wasn't very good. Also, see the Ghost Rider movies for why the director is a hack and thankfully wasn't allowed to do Preacher for HBO.

Don't get me started on Ghost Rider.

There is the very definition of DIRE.

I saw ads for this during the NBA finals. As I was watching the build up, I was like, "Are you kidding me? This looks exactly like the plot of Total Recall."

Then, I saw it was Total Recall. And I went

We're already remaking movies that are barely 20 years old now? What's next? Remaking Goodfellas? Silence of the Lambs? Se7en?

Of course not.

We'll remake all the 10-year-old movies first.

I think there are different rules for comic book movies.

Unless Total Recall was a comic first, and I didn't know about it. I've never watched the Spidermans.

Total Recall was a short story.  The only comic book I've ever seen is the adaptation of the movie.

The funny thing about the movie is all the stuff that happens on Mars is implied. The short story ("We Can Remember it for you Wholesale" by PKD) is sort of a O. Henry story rooted in the concept rather than the action.

I caught this last night, I would probably think it was a good movie if it wasn't a remake of total recall.  They used 80% of the original plot/scenes, but the 20% they left out was what made the original awesome.
Wait for the bluray, you'll thank me, unless you want to see 2 seconds of tri-boob on the big screen.

No mars, no alien tech, and the "we won!" ending doesn't really feel like a win.

Having never read the short, was the Mars / Alien tech in the original story?  Or was that an adaption made for the first movie?  Because it would make sense if they were sticking closer to the source material (if said source material did not include mars et al).

No, there was none of that in the original short story.  But keep in mind it was a short story, and a rather quirky comedic one at that.  You couldn't actually make a full movie just following the source material, which is why both movies are about 90% made up stuff added to the source material.

Meh, will probably wait to see this on DVD, unless I get bored or dragged along by friends.

The 2012 version is a remake of the 1990 movie script (total remake?  :why_so_serious:), if they are sticking to anything in the original short story - I am not seeing it.

I have begun to totally appreciate how much better the original 1990 version is compared to the 2012 version.

Well, the 2012 version removes Mars altogether, but at least that was in the original story in a different manner.   Everything in 2012 happens only on earth.

Neither have the ultimate twist that was in the short story. Though the 1990 was a much cooler lady-or-the-tiger ending than what I'm reading about the 2012 version.
