Title: Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 - Koei - PS3/360
Post by: Rendakor on December 11, 2011, 12:15:04 AM
You're piloting a giant robot, smashing through hordes of other giant robots. What's not to love!? If you've ever played a Dynasty Warriors game before, you know what you're getting into here. The fact that you're in a Gundam doesn't actually change the gameplay much, aside from increased mobility in the form of dashing, flying, etc. There are more than 80 different mecha available, and you can use any character to pilot any mech once you've unlocked the license for it. You can also customize the abilities of both your pilot and your Gundam, giving a wide variety of options (which is good, since the combat can get a bit repetitive). Compared to previous DW:G games, the third entry has a much broader selection of mecha including characters from the original Gundam, Zeta, Unicorn, G Gundam, Seed, Wing, 00, and more. The graphics are also improved, and the framerate doesn't take a hit even when there are tons of enemy Zaku on screen.

The game features split-screen co-op, which really improves the experience because it eliminates the need to clear the huge map alone to unlock the enemy base. Splitting up and clearing separate sides, then meeting up to take on the boss of the stage is a lot of fun; the second player even has the advantage of being able to play as virtually any character instead of being restricted to a story-appropriate one on the first playthrough like player one. Both players level up their pilots individually, although player one has to do all of the mecha customization.

If you're a big DW or Gundam fan, Buy it! Otherwise, rent it!

How does it compare, feature-wise to DWG 1 and 2?

And graphically, for that matter...

New features include: field types that actually do things (for example: Repair hangars that passively heal you, Catapaults that launch you around the map, etc.), Partner Strikes that summon a second Gundam to help kill shit for a few seconds, enemies actually explode when killed with certain attacks, damaging nearby foes. There are a lot more mission "types" although the gameplay doesn't vary all that much. This one also has online multiplayer, but I haven't tried it yet.

Graphically it's a big step up from DWG 1; I didn't play the second one very much due to a personal pet peeve.

Does it still have the bizarre poorly constructed difficulty curve of the first 2?

Not sure what you mean. The missions are rated by difficulty on a scale of 1-8; low rank missions are pretty easy but 5+ were pretty tough to solo until I started getting advanced plans. Co-op makes everything a good deal easier, but we balanced that out by playing on Hard.
