Title: American Horror Story
Post by: HaemishM on October 07, 2011, 07:40:04 AM
So this is a new FX series by the hated creators of Glee and Nip/Tuck. It's supposed to REVOLUTIONIZE HORROR on TV!!!!!

Yeah, it doesn't. It sucked. I made it through 40 minutes of the pilot before deleting it from my Tivo. I'll probably blog about how bad it was later, but suffice it to say the characters were annoying cunts, they tried to mash fifteen different contexts into the same story and did it badly and it was directed by what appeared to be a methhead.

Do not watch.

Damn, that sucks.  The commercials I saw at the gym got me interested enough to consider hunting this down.

The pilot was basically every single horror movie cliche packed into 45 minutes, i really have no idea what they have left for the second episode.

More of Dylan McDermott's ass, I'd wager.

I didn't find it that terrible as much as I found it bizarre. Like Twin Peaks on acid or something. And the fact that every single cliche was in there made me intrigued as to what they were going to do. They can't just keep doing what they're doing. There has to be some point?

I like that it's willing to be a show with no likeable characters.

The scene with the guy looking in the window was pretty creepy, and I liked all the stuff with the maid.

I should warn you it was Dylan McDermott's A.

Nothing is wrong with it on HBO. Or where Sons of Anarchy and Spartacus took shape.

But American Horror Story brings me back to the days when that was the exception not the rule.

I didn't hate this show nearly as much as I hate Nip/Tuck and Glee.  It was a little better than I expected.  I expect it to become creepy/weird like Nip/Tuck did though, so I doubt I'll last much longer with it.

I did like the part with the maid.

We're watching for the LOLZ at this point. I did enjoy the last episode.

I can't get over the notion that Shake Shake Senora is going to spark up and the daughter and the half mutilated killer are going to start dancing together.

I am quite amazed that they have most horror movie villain archetypes in one show. Even the hero side, with the lead male being a physiologist, and the wife being the "Paranormal" type housewife. Hell, the daughter is going to turn into a "gingersnaps" type I bet. It's honestly quite impressive, and they are weaving so many threads in this thing. Jessica Lange is fucking creepy and brilliant as the "Mother" archetype, she does it perfectly. Evan Peters/Tate is one I haven't pinned down, at first I thought he was the young psychopath, a Michael Myers before the mask. But he seems to be able to project, or IS something more demonic. Frances Conroy/Moria, the succubus, and shes brilliant as the maid/Medium of the house, Alexandra Breckenridge ( young Moria ) is just fucking yummy. I loved her in true blood too. Denis O’Hare ( Vampire King of Mississippi! ) is funny in his role. "You killed your whole family!", "Yes but I was never unfaithful."  :awesome_for_real:

I think the first episode was just so jam packed with introductions, its easy to say it had no point. Clearly, now that introductions are out of the way, it can move on, and its doing so rather well I think. I am somewhat amazed it hasn't just degraded into a kill fest with so many archetypes in one area. But I believe the "mother" has a hand or two in that.

Yeah, I had her pegged wrong. Is she the only one who wants to stay at the house? (lol)

If there's anything I love purely about this show, other than Alexandra Breckenridge's vanilla syrup ass, it's that all of the characters have clear motivations, even when you don't know what their goal is. That's in contrast to, say, The Walking Dead, where characters act stupid as a way of life and their actions are attributed to, "Oh, they where just fearful for their lives" (because the helmers have no idea). I'm getting a lot more pleasure out of American Horror Story than The Walking Dead.

Wait people like this turd? I mean I was about to complain about the walking dead. Then this show came on.

I really liked her take on the home invasion thing "this isn't where we were victims mom, this is where we kicked ass!".

Yeah, just before she told her mom she thought she was weak. I got a strong "The Strangers" vibe from the whole home invasion part.

Actually that was at the beginning of the episode.  Yes, the whole home invasion thing was almost an exact copy of the strangers.

There is so much wrong with this show but I love the scarred guy so much, and Jessica Lange, and Francis Conroy.

I pretty much hate the guy and beginning to hate his wife.  Haven't decided about the daughter yet.

I'm starting to really like it. There's enough crazy to go around and keep everyone amused. We're pretty sure everyone but the family is dead and the parents definitely need to join them. And I'm hoping the daughter and her bf are the ones to do it. Sure, they don't have much in common. She's a confused adolescent with messed up parents and he's the ghost of a psychopathic mass murderer who shot up the local high school. But we're rooting for those crazy kids.

Yeah i had that pegged from the moment they said she wasn't going to school anymore.  I think it would have been a better reveal if the parents found out at the same time as the audience.

Where would the fun be in that, I hate them both and now we get to have it hanging over them. The suspense is terrible, I hope it'll last.

I didn't see it coming - why wasn't I even thinking about that, in hindsight I should have known.

Really liking this show now despite hating everyone.

My wife pointed out last episode or at the beginning of this last one that the girl hadn't left the house in a while. At that point, we sort of put it together. Still, a nice twist for sure.

And I'm with everyone that says they hate the characters, but kind of like the show. Hopefully they all die.

Most of them have. Given the premise of the show, I'm rather hoping the parents don't die because then we'd never be rid of them.

Watched the first three episodes all in one go.  This show is pure undistilled awesome.  Somehow,  Itt has that 60s Batman TV quality to it.  I haven't laughed half as much watching any comedy in years.

So I heven't watched a single episode, but the season finale came on while I was too lazy to change the channel. What a fucked up thing... I'll have to go back and watch the whole thing just to understand who anyone but the family is. Also, I wonder how there's going to be anymore seasons.

As the season progressed I figured they where going to kill the family and that following seasons would be new families each time.  With the very end though and them just jumping forward three years makes me wonder if another season would be a whole new story entirely.  Seems a bit odd as they seemed to be setting up some lore to explore later, we never got any explanation for the devil/hag woman did we?

According to this (http://cliqueclack.com/tv/2011/12/26/ahs-season-2-new-story/), the next season will be an entirely different story - different house, different family.

Necro (kinda appropriate here).

Soo...I guess nobody else has been watching the new season? I've been liking it from a purely visceral point of view as S2 has been much nastier than S1. Not sure how they're going to tie all the divergent elements together  but I've been having fun watching it.

My girlfriend is watching it.  I watched the first 3-4 episodes and it seemed too much like torture porn for me rather than intelligently done.

My partner is totally freaked out by Asylum stuff so we haven't been watching it. It's with The Walking Dead on her list of things I should watch when she's in the room, so she can follow, but not actually watching, so she won't get scared.

I enjoyed the first season more, mainly for shipping psycho and angst girl.

From the depths, like the fetid, moldering corpse of the forgotten junkie celebrity spinning slowly in the shallow end of the clogged and filthy swimming pool...

ARISE!

Season 5 started, with Lady Gaga in it. As ever it walks the line between crazy and ridiculous very carefully, which makes it hilariously entertaining. Another one with a beautiful building - an art deco hotel - for the nice camerawork to take place in. Wide angle lenses with perfect central symmetry to the shots, very iconic. Definite homages to The Shining and The Hunger, and some utterly cliched soundtrack choices (Bauhaus anyone?).

Not to be taken seriously. Worth watching though, IMO. Also I really like Lady Gaga and I'm not 100% sure why.

I'm not liking this season as much. It's not clear what's going on, we have a hotel that acts like Murder House, with ghosts that persist inside the hotel, and we have a vampire nest led by Gaga inside the hotel, and a random parade of serial killers....

So many characters are inside each other's flashbacks, I can't tell when we are in real time, and so many of the male actors are the same physical type that I lose track of them as well. All that is really left is the gorror.

Yeah it's bonkers for sure. I'm watching it now purely for light relief, as a self-referential comedy. Which it does quite well.
