The first bits of actual news came out about the Marvel MMO today (http://marvel.com/news/story/15731/marvel_universe_mmo_introducing_the_writer?LSID=4176333|10859501|4rg9qqrjsc4y).

 - The lead writer is Brian Michael Bendis. Andy Collins at Gazillion is the lead story designer.
 - It is going to be a F2P title.
 - You are going to play as existing Marvel characters, through previous Marvel events.
 - The current title has been in development for about 12 months and there are no release plans yet.

Well, it's different, I'll give it that.

I am wondering how they will handle the problem of 5000 wolverines.  Also if you play through official marvel events, will it feel like your being lead around?  Don't get me wrong I would love to see a series that I grew up with and collected done well.  For instance I think it would be totally cool to play as an Xmen through the Inferno saga.  However I can't imagine once the novelty has wore off how this game will not feel like your being led around in a dog and pony show instead of you taking an active role in shaping the "world."

Interesting none the less and your right sounds a lot more interesting then any other superhero MMOs I have seen offered.

Perhaps the only interesting feature I remember from Champions Online was the character creator, which I spent roughly 10 times as much time on as playing the actual game.
This presumably doesn't have a character creator (beyond do you want to be Wolverine/Magneto) ... why is this an MMO?

Gazillion wants the halo effect of having a 'real' Marvel writer attached to the project. DCUO had Jim Lee, Geoff Johns and Marv Wolfman attached, which gave a lot of ammunition to fanbois saying how, "Lee, Johns and Wolfman would never let a bad MMO be made out of DC Comics".

It worked out well for DCUO... at least until the title launched.  :grin:

Haven't watched the video (90 minutes of auditorium echo?  Hell no.), but I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up something like League of Legends, where you can earn currency and level up and so on but the actual hero you choose is non-persistent.  I don't really see how it would work levelling up an established superhero, given how static they are.

A superhero-themed DOTA clone would actually be pretty cool.

Given what a bang up job Gazillion did with the Super Hero Squad game, I'm not going to hold my breath for this to be anything other than a poorly executed money grab.

It's a Diablo-esque F2P MMO. With lobbies. So like Gazillion's other titles, really.

Sounds to me like you'll pick your heroes LoL style (get a bunch free but you can buy others or maybe buy more powerful versions of others) then run through dungeons/public areas that can have other people in them.

You can call it an MMO and it sort of is, but only in the sense that Diablo 3 is. I'll probably try it out but not too excited about it.

OK, so Hulk, Captain America, and Iron Man would have been in just about any trailer about a Marvel game.
But throw Black Widow and the Tesseract in there, and you've got some Avengers coattail riding. Good marketing.

Gazillion plans to do an open beta, but no date for that, or for the release, is announced.

I'd have to laugh if this turns out to be considered a better Diablo than D3.  Thought of in that mindset it makes static character choices no worse than with the Diablo series.  Stan Lee help me, it's starting to look interesting.

They're putting some effort into writing a story, complete with cut scenes and voice acting.

Last I heard Diablo clone. The thing I'm wondering about is grouping. I was less than impressed with Diablo, but being able to "LFG system" pop into a game with strangers was a lot of fun. Fun that's missing in Torchlight 2, even if it's overall a better game.

A Diablo clone with 30 widely different playable characters is interesting, if they can pull it out decently.

I'm basically considering this Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 3. Only with a more aggressive monetization scheme. Not throwing any money at them till I get to play it though. Them's the rules.

Multiplayer Diablo, developed by a team that includes David Brevik who was one of the creators of Diablo and Diablo II.

Gazillion will be putting a lot into this title - it's the only thing they've got left apart from Super Hero Squad Online. And now that Disney owns the Marvel IP, that 10 year contract probably doesn't offer them the protection they thought it did (and they wouldn't want to take on Disney in the courts anyway).

Oh, and they just announced Founders Packs (http://www.gazillion.com/gazillion-unmasks-founders-program-for-marvel-heroes/) - $20, $60 or $200.

Mini-rant: fuck Founders Packs. You've got a game you want to develop, great, I'll consider buying it when it comes out. I'm not going to pre-pay you for a game that is still months away and barely has any kind of public information around about it. I used to object to the idea of pay for beta, and that was usually just $5 to $10. This approach isn't even as good - it is pay more for pre-beta. It's awful.

If you're a gaming studio and are having money issues, that's even less reason for me to pay you ahead of releasing the game for your particular brand of mismanagement. That Marvel Heroes is pre-selling in-game currency as a reward is an additional fact that makes the bile rise in my throat.

The only marginal value I can see from the founders stuff is that you can pick (what appears to be) any hero as your starting hero. Given that I'm only really interested in playing as Deadpool or Squirrel Girl, well, yeah, no. It's still not worth it.

Which has been my sentiment for kickstarters all along.

It is only awful; if it doesn't work.  It is a great idea if 500 people give you $200.

After Mechwarrior Online announced they got US$5m from their Founders Packs, it's a technique that is going to be used for a while to come.

I really admire the chutzpah these guys have. I get new offers for stuff from the item shop every couple of days. The latest was an Iron Man 3 tie in. Yet the game isn't even out and who knows or really cares when it will be. Usually, these games offer you a couple of options where you pay for some points in the store and they let you into beta. These guys are in full marketing mode. It's really incredible.

Gazillion have to be a bit desperate. Of the titles they've launched, two have been from NetDevil and god only knows what they spent on titles that got cancelled in production (like whatever Romero cashed out on for Slipgate Ironworks).

So they're left with Super Hero Squad Online, which was very limited last time I played it, and this Marvel Heroes game. If Marvel Heroes fails to grab an audience - and Disney must be looking closely at the Marvel licence deals that were signed before they took over - then it'll be hard times at Gazillion.

I think I played this at PAX East today (in that I think this is the right thread?). It's basically Diablo 3 with Marvel characters. The keystrokes all felt very familiar. I was bored about 10min in, but MMOs at shows always feel that way. I played a bit of Cyclops and Storm. There was some very satisfying moments of mayhem. Good for a few laughs. But if you want to like this, you gotta want a Diablo 3 style game with comic book characters  :grin:

Also: This is dropping June 4th.

Its surreal how Diablo-like this is. Your super hero runs out of inventory space often laden down with 20 masks some of which are green or blue or whatever. A game like this must be what Gamesworkshop has nightmares about which leads them to being such control freaks with their IP.

David Brevik, who was one of the Diablo creators, is the head of this project (as well as the studio and Gazillion itself, iirc).

It's not a terrible strategy. Know characters in a proven game system. Kinda standard practice :-)

i flew around, ignited whole sections of ground with massive lightning blasts, turned myself into the center of various tempests (lightning, wind, ice), hurled big-ass tornadoes, flew around whenever it suited me (or if i wanted to avoid melee mobs), basically violently melted the faces of gobs of evil minions, and could not help but think to myself "in this quite admittedly limited experience, I already feel pretty fuckawesome and now want this game to come out and be good so I can scratch the itch that D3 bitterly left unscratched"

I trust you Sam and I want you to know that this has gone back on the list of things that will take up my HD space at some point. I was really unimpressed with how the L1-6 gameplay looks and the whole super heros w/ Diablo loot that probably isn't well designed Diablo loot but that does sound kind of awesome.

I really want to try this. I mean, a Diablo game with 26 characters instead of the usual 5 or so? Damn, yes please. I am tempted to give them 20 dollars, but it bothers me that you only get ONE hero for that.

I guess the question is if there will be enough core content to make you runnin around being crazy superpowered fun enough to keep doing. Well, there's also the question of "will this work with friends" or "will these characters be even remotely balanced? Did I play storm just to have her come out bad broken and you have to stick with the 5-6 good characters?"

So, I've been playing this a bit today.  I can't say to much since there is an NDA however there have been articles released where the press have been allowed to give their impressions of them game so far (PC Gamer magazine has it as its cover story this month) and so far its being called a super hero version of Diablo.  Can't say if thats true or not because  :nda: but that seems to be the overwhelming consensus.

Well son of a gun. My MMORPG.com account still works.

These beta weekends seem good for getting a lot of first impressions from people, but probably not so much in-depth feedback. As I personally did one and left some feedback, but can't be arsed to re-patch the client every week to play for 4 hours on some random day.

Edit: I'm still looking forward to giving this a go at release mind you. Just, Effort.

NDA is lifted.  Not a fan, I liked the X-men Legends games but this just seems kind of dull.

I think it's fine for what it is trying to be.  You are trading character complexity for lots of variety.  The game feels fun to play, can't comment on the loot since i never made it to the higher levels but i can see having some fun with this.

For what I've played, there's very little that separates this from Diablo 3. Which isn't a bad thing per se, except I'm bored with Diablo 3.

The big one difference that is immediately obvious to me even at level 1 (or 5) is that beating the shit out of mobs isn't as satisfying here as it is in Diablo 3. Also, gear doesn't show on your character (for obvious reasons: costumes) and the icons for loot look horrible and confusing.

The latter (gear) is a disappointment. But I did have quite a bit of fun running around and Storm'ing them all. Repeatedly. The ragdolls are slightly more interesting :-)

Open Beta this weekend.  It's not too horrible so far.  I think it's appealing to my love of Marvel Ultimate Alliance more than anything else.  I do love swinging my hammer around as Thor though.

I'm a big X-Men Legends/MUA fan. One big question - why doesn't it seem to support a gamepad? XML/MUA were awesome with gamepads.

This game without a gamepad is horrible. The boss fight against the Goblin was laughable as using the same device to shoot and move is fucking retarded, same as Diablo and all those kind of games.

Played around with it as Captain A.  Found a random drop that let me unlock Daredevil later on.  They all seem pretty cookie cutter on abilities and such.  I don't see myself playing it to much to be honest but we shall see.  Hell it's fee anyway. 

This games rely heavily on mouse clicking, they would have to fundamentally change the playstyle to make it work with a gamepad.

Right. But this game could've gone XML/MUA, which was awesome.

Those prices smell of flop sweat and desperation, or comic book fans are a lot dumber than I thought.

I am slightly intrigued by one portion of the endgame PVE, Survival Challenges.

Basically, you jump into a queue which throws you into a holdout scenario where you fight wave after wave of baddies until you lose or beat the supervillain in the final wave. Interesting bit is you do it along with 14 other people. So basically, a diablo raid.

Edit: Oh, and they gave me a second free hero for completing the 10 minute tutorial mission. I picked Thing to start and they gave me Storm. My account was in beta, but I don't think it mentioned anything about that, so I assume everyone gets a second hero.

I started as Scarlet and got Hawkeye.

Still say I'd be there if it was controller based. I think aping Diablo rather than MUA was dopey.

Anyway, now it's launched and I can safely ignore it. Have fun, those enjoying it!

I don't miss a controller at all. This is not a controller game its a Diablo game and I don't get why people want controllers in Diablo either.

I do wish this was multiplayer MUA, can't believe those aren't still being made.

The boss fights are pretty fun. If I had a kid/wife/gf that would game but only easy games I'd be pretty thrilled with this.

Last night, I finished the download and played through the tutorial/intro missions.
I picked Thing. He's both the melee/brick choice of the free toons, and also my favorite among them.

It was fun. Plodding around, beating up bad guys. I got a loot drop that gave me (slightly) advanced access to Thing's Charge ability, which was awesome in terms of increasing my mobility.

When I got to the end of the tutorial, I also got Storm as my reward unlock.

And there I was, in multiplayer land. There happened to be a lot of Hawkeyes and Daredevils running around when I was there.
And that's as far as I got. I'll probably check out the multiplayer this weekend.

Which version of Ms. Marvel are they using? Pantless McGee or the newer Captain Marvel look?

Likely both, as there are a variety of skins available.

Hmm. While Ms Marvel should be a playable character (she's in one of the DLC packs), her entry on that page is incomplete. So you can't even see her basic abilities.

The fact is, most Marvel heroes are ranged zappers of one flavor or another. The brawlers, of course, are mostly male. Ladies that spring to mind are She Hulk and Rogue. And Rogue's strength and toughness were some kind of perma-steal from Ms Marvel, iirc, so yeah. Ms Marvel should be a brawler.

That's how I understood it yea. From what I saw in that old X-Men cartoon where Rogue stole her powers and from what I've seen in the newer Avengers Cartoon where she regularly dukes it out with hulk level baddies (and the Hulk himself once) and seem quite comfortable in those situations. (She almost even wore pants in the newer Avenger Cartoon, almost!)

She can also absorb energy or something to shoot laser beams, because WHY NOT  :drill: or a  :drillf: I suppose!



I have no idea what her actual Comic Canon power level is or whatever, I just really like her new look with the full jumpsuit from her rebooted book. Actually looks like a superhero, instead of say, a stripper.

That fully clothed costume is in the game, they call it Captain Marvel costume, it costs 1k G's whatever that means, I'm guessing $10? The default is the thigh highs with no pants and yellow sash dark blue outfit.

Pretty sure at least one of her basic powers is melee and she has a mix of ranged and melee skills. Seen her using beams but also using kicks and uppercuts.

Oh nice, maybe I'll waste the pizza budget on this instead.

I tried Ms. Marvel in the beta and she is (or was) definitely a brawler. She actually has been probably my favourite character out of the about ten I tried.

I followed one around probably long enough to creep the dude out. She brawls but has some beams and aoe blasts. Looked really fun.

This is probably not the game for me. I hate alts. I hated alts in D2 for the record. I'm almost to the end and I've never seen a true hero unlock drop. Not going to say that means they are too rare because I just don't know. Overall I've never grouped with anyone, mainly because there are no chat bubbles so you never know if someone near you is talking to you and I'm not much interested in playing a lot more of this. It wasn't poorly made though. Its a shame more of the people keeping this from being dogshit weren't working on D3. They managed to keep the fun in an ARPG that can't have visual loot.

I don't know why people are surprised cash shop items are rare drops, that they drop at all is the weird part.

I got my Ms. Marvel in her Captain Marvel outfit, I am punching the shit out of these muggers.


It's a little bit derpy how you see like, 15 of every hero. Killed some zone boss event dude, Electro, and there's like, 5 storms, 3 daredevils and 4 hawkeyes with me. I even saw a few more copies of Ms. Marvel, but none of them in my costume, just the slutty ones.  :why_so_serious:



If you grab the game through steam, it will use your steam wallet for the real money stuff, which I like, since I trust the steam wallet and I already had a few bucks lying around in it.



I'm guessing I'll give this a weekend, or however long it takes to finish the story or hit level cap (or both). Then I'll promptly forget about it forever.

This isn't as awful as I was fearing. A bit bland, but I'm a sucker for superheroes (weirdly, I'm a sucker for superheroes in everything BUT comic books). However, I was led to believe that Squirrel Girl would be playable. It does not look like she's playable.

Princess Sparklefists is level 14 and just finished Chapter 3. She seems to have a lot of "traps" skill point wise, lots of one and done talents. I don't have any of the really fancy stuff yet though, still a few levels to go.


PRO TIP: Do not stand in front of Rhino's charge attack.  :why_so_serious:

I have her up to level 19 and she's just not that impressive.  I've only bothered adding points to her two basic attacks, her leap, a few in the energy to spirit power, and her toughness skill.

And I still feel incredibly weak compared to anyone with a gun who seems to hit harder and is better able to avoid damage.  Boss fights seriously suck on her since they're pretty much immune to her staggers.

Just beat the Kingpin and his hired help... what a chore. Staying in melee range was suicide and my ranged options were fairly unimpressive. Shoot Shoot, run run run, Shoot Shoot, run run run.


I dunno if my build is shit, or if my gear is shit (its all purple and seems better then the random drops that fill my bag), or if Ms. Marvel is just poop in this game or what.



The gameplay is either utterly boring or frustrating and tedious.

Ms. Marvel is very unimpressive.  Seriously.  Scarlet Witch is insane with just the level 6 AoE power, and she's not even the strongest ranged hero I've seen.  They really need to make her Photon Blast a basic power so it doesn't cost spirit to use.

I have to say I'm surprised you even tried this, Fordel, given you have admitted to me in the past that whatever gene it is that makes people think Diablo-likes are fun is not present in you.

I plan to try it when I get back and no one else is playing it. Woo!

I wanted to be Princess Sparklefists, sue me! The novelty is rapidly wearing off though and the base gameplay is just, meh.


With random trash, hold down mouse button, collect bacon. With boss fights, blow entire mana pool with ranged power, kite till it comes back, repeat. There's like, no gameplay or shitty gameplay.  I still don't get the appeal.

Step 1: Punch Monster.  Step 2: Get Treasure.   Get with the program!

That's not a video game, that's a slot machine.

I can happily report that Ms. Marvel's level 20 power, Photonic Regeneration, makes melee viable.  I can even hang out by the boss in event fights.  Why you have to wade through so many painful levels to get it I cannot say.

Princess Sparklefists is up to 21 and on Strykers Fort or whatever it's called. There are roughly 20 billion mobs in every inch of that zone, including a endless supply of giant Sentinels. I ended up alb zerging with like 10-15 people for over an hour all over that place. Had to turn my graphics settings all the way down, having 50 stacking fields on my screen made my computer cry a lot.


The heal is a big help, it's especially good when I actually fight something that deals that fickle energy damage to me. I also got this Juggernaut badge that gives me a 2% chance when hit to receive 4 seconds of invulnerability. 2% doesn't sound like much, but when you have 50 jillion god damn mobs attacking, you basically become immortal.


I replaced Photon Blast with Stellar Beams for my right click. Same Damage, Same Range, roughly the same spirit cost but the Beams will go through ALL the enemies, instead of just stopping after hitting the first one. It's big downside is it has no synergy bonus with anything, so my Photonic Wave is losing a bit in theory. I may end up replacing Wave with Photonic Devastation though, I'll see how that power pans out.

Sparklefists is up to 24-25 now and in Dinosaur Land or something, I don't even know anymore. I got this new attack, Cosmic Haymaker, it makes every other single target attack I have utterly useless. It does roughly 3-5x's the damage of my next biggest single target attack and it stuns for 1-2 seconds AND it's cheaper resource cost wise.

It's just so bizarre, I have all these cool looking attacks, where she swoops around and blasts lasers and stuff, but mechanically they are mostly utter ass or self defeating.


I've basically paired down my attacks to my basic Photon Punch, Stellar Beam for range and now Cosmic Haymaker for anything that needs more then a few basic attacks. All the flying uppercuts into laser beams blasts? On the bench! Stringing together clever chains of attacks is substantially worse then just standing there like a doofus and using the same basic attack forever.


I'm hoping Photonic Devastation and Crashdown Strike are more useful.

Playing Storm, level 12, so lots of running in circles while zapping people and wishing I had a decent AoE already. The group combat is basically run in circles when you have aggo and hold the button down the rest of the time. Someone had a lot of fun doing the environmental destruction animations, some of the tile sets are quite nice but the prices for more heroes are pretty extreme and it doesn't look like there's immense amounts of content.

It's competent, but in terms of game-play depth it feels almost like an upgraded flash game, it's so pared back to the basics. It's also a bit weird playing an X-man character when the story is all about the avengers.

It's somewhat fun, it makes me miss CoH, and I'm pretty sure it isn't going to offer much longevity.

Cosmic Haymaker is crazy at 4-5 times the damage of my fully upgraded sparkle punch.

Crashdown Strike finally gives something flashy, but I wasn't too impressed with it due to the spirit cost.  Didn't try using it against a big group though, so it might shine in the AoE department.  Still waiting to find an item which gives Devastation to try it out.

Really found this dull playing through the tutorial as the Thing.

As you progress the story, you do end up at the X-Mansion or whatever it's called, doing stuff for Xavier.

I was hoping to make it through the story and see dailies and try to get new heroes to drop but I can't handle it.

Does the game have movement powers, like flying or super leaping?

Not really. There is "flying" where you get an animation and can pass over some small obstacles but it's not really a travel power. Other than there are "dodge" and "charge" moves to help you run around in circles.

Flying in the context of an isometric game is pretty difficult to imagine.

You can zoom around the screen pretty good with some powers though.

I've also finished 8 of 9 green daily dungeons or whatever, haven't tried the 9th yet, I'm pretty sure it will fuck me in the ass until I restock on Medpacks and maybe hit 30.


I got an item with Stellar Flare on it, since I'm not 30 yet. Stellar Flare is roughly 30 levels too late, it's basically the AE SparkleFists has needed since level 1. Crashdown strike in aerial at 28 is another 1 point wonder and costs way to much spirit to use regularly, but it's basically a superjump so I forgive it. Stellar Flare is where it's at though, 3 Second PBAE Channel that taunts all enemies onto you, gives you a minor defense boost, then explodes EVERYTHING.

Stellar Flare is to my other AE abilities, what Cosmic Haymaker is to my single target ones. You'll pretty much never use anything else once you get it. They just need to make Stellar Beam and Stellar Flare give each other synergy bonuses and that will be that.

Photonic Regeneration

Then I have 1 point in everything else for various bits of utility as needed.

I tend to favor Warbird Charge and Crashdown Strike for my mobility spells.

I find Flying lunge too short range and Evasive Blast fairly cumbersome, even though the 20% attack speed debuff/snare seems good on paper.

Cruising Altitude is just broken as far as I can tell, it's supposed to provide a movement speed bonus, but just doesn't currently. If I need to go 'over' an obstacle I just use Crashdown strike.

I favor Stellar Beam over Photonic Blast for my cheap ranged option, the target piercing on Beam is much more useful then the tiny AE on Blast. Doubly so if you can herd mobs into a line, which is not difficult with Warbird charge.

Photonic Wave looks cool, but costs way to much for what damage it does. It's still your only real AE for like 20 levels though. Photonic Devastation is... I dunno, its not BAD, but I don't care for the weird line channel AE spread thing it does. It has an odd range and area of effect.

I had a crap load of points in Energy Absorption at one point, then I respecced and didn't put any but the 1 it defaults with. Haven't noticed a difference either way. /shrug

RoundHouse kick is self defeating, small cone AE that knocks enemies out of it's own range. Uppercut blast is similar, but it's single target and decent enough damage for the 5 odd levels where you get it and don't have haymaker.

Defiant Escape is pretty much mandatory, I don't see how you'll survive the harder colors of dungeon without it really. I found it really great even in the story mode, because fuck those eyebeam stunning assholes.


I am told MightyPunch overtakes PhotonPunch in damage in the later levels, but I have no proof either way.

Kree Toughness, atm its a 1 pointer, but I imagine as they keep tweaking defense, they'll take a look at this talent and probably make it way more useful to sink points into.


I don't have it yet, but Ms. Marvel's ultimate, Binary whatever, is apparently one of the few ultimate's that doesn't blow chunks currently. Massive Passive PBAE DoT for enemies and HoT for allies for it's duration.


Photonic Regeneration is odd... when I HAVE Photonic Energy to spend, I am virtually immortal. When I don't, I am far far more restricted. Like, I basically brute forced my way through the last half dozen storymode bosses on the back of Cosmic Haymaker and Photonic Regeneration. Pretty sure it won't keep scaling up with mob damage though, then I'll probably be sad all the time. The need for photonic energy leads to odd behavior, like seeking out the fire to stand in, or leaving certain enemies for last just so you can store up more energy.



Overall, Ms. Marvel doesn't seem to be terribly powerful, but neither terribly underpowered either. There are definitely some spots where she struggles, like the odd 3-5 levels before you get your heal ability, but otherwise it's fairly smooth, if a bit dull at times. No idea if she keeps it up in the higher levels though.


I probably got my 10 bucks worth when I bought her, but probably not 20 bucks for her + costume. At least I have pants though!

26 hours of play, a level 26 storm and now I could pay 10$ to do it in different clothing or 6-20$ to play the exact same content again... yeah, that's not happening. Heck, a lot of that time was running around very samey zones looking for the missing quest indicator or target (even had to reset one step and do it again).

My Storm ended up with a leap forward and leap back move (both slowing mobs in line) single target lighting bolt, AoE doing damage and stun and chain lightning for more AoE goodness. There's a build using a level 30 PBAoE but you won't see that level on your first play-through.

The tilesets are still nice, at time I was just wishing they were being used for a strategy game like an updated and not shit Jagged Alliance 2. The writing is pretty bad as are the pseudo comic cutscenes, the plot is silly and the gameplay is flashy, simple and repetitive. It sort of scratched the kill mobs and hunt for upgrades itch but it's not anything resembling a good game. Most of the boss battles were trivialized because I left on the "auto-group" feature so while the melee played catch with the boss I just nuked from range. The daily door missions were done at a run because high level characters trivialize them, know the layout and just want the completion token.

Warframe works better to keep you busy. I think because FPS is more fun and immersive than isometric and its upgrade scheme allows you to plot goals and see progress towards them. The marvel heroes equivalent is a lot of grinding to spin a wheel which might give you a hero you'd like to play the same content with. But I guess both games plan to make their money off those who must have all the options open to them and thus will reach for the credit card.

Hope they didn't spend too much because I think few will plan a long term involvement with the game.

Nothing terribly exciting really.

They had a big content Patch, new Hero (Human Torch) and a new way to end game, more of a open world roaming thing with random multi-boss events.

Considerably changes for many existing heroes as well, Ms. Marvel got some really big buffs and changes to her mechanics, it's all much smoother and clearer now. Her two main ranged attacks are now actual basic attacks, her secondary resource system is now generated from all damage, increased regen on energy damage and increased regen using energy damage powers. Entirely possible to make a full melee or full ranged or any mix of the two. Dramatically increased survivability as well.

They also changed how you get new heroes in game, instead of a random hero drop chance, you get little currency drops that you can spend on heroes and junk. It's still a fucking grindtastic grind, played for a couple hours, got around 10 of the currency. Need 200 for the cheapest hero.

About time. The defensive buff helped some, but her skill trees were still...weird.

They are going to buff her boss tanking some more in the next few patches too apparently.

They been doing a pretty good job of making the game more fun and aren't afraid of handing out respecs pretty often to deal with the changes.

Most importantly, they have now added Squirrel Girl (https://marvelheroes.com/news/news-articles/squirrel-girl-now-available).  She is everything I hoped for and much, much more.

When I first read the concept for this game I thought it was dumb - can't created my own hero?!  But I was wrong - if you like marvel comics and diablo-likes this is pretty good.  They are doing a good job of making each hero fun and pretty much exactly what you'd expect for that hero if you read the comics (Thor, Human Torch I especially like).  Starter hero's can be a bit dull, which is a shame, I think they missed an opportunity there (although I think Storm is pretty good now).

There are/were some underpowered/dull champs, but it feels like every patch is a step in the right direction and has some improvement to champ balance (primarily buffs, none of my champs have been nerfed), quality of life and the addition of additional systems.

Yea, they've been fairly on the ball in regards to class balance. From where Ms. Marvel started and where she is now, it's a DRAMATIC improvement. I don't play much, but the sirens call of RNG loot has never worked on me so this is unsurprising.

There are plenty of geeks willing to open their wallets for ridiculous amounts of money to people with normal jobs.  Always have been but devs had some sense of restraint.  No longer. Welcome to the new world of gaming.

The worst part is each hero is only about 10 bucks or so, so you are just paying them now for a hero over a year from now and a shit ton of filler.

They had a 2 times exp weekend this weekend.  I had not played since release. It's amazing how D2 the game feels now. 

I've been playing a lot over the last couple weeks. My "main" is Scarlet Witch but I've had to hold back on her a bit for the sake of my leveling partner, so my highest level is Thing. Powered him through to 60 over the weekend and while I liked him at 30 he seems to fall off hard at the high levels. I'm happy to have the XP synergy but I don't think I'll be playing him again before his review.

I know they're working on raids, but until then does anything interesting content-wise open up at 60 or is it just gear optimization?

Yes and no.

You can move the minimap with the arrow keys when it's up, but that's probably not what you meant.

Heroes don't actually drop any more but you can buy them with eternity splinters. You get 200 for completing story mode the first time, think it's 100 after chapter 1 and then another 100 for beating Doom. After that it's roughly 1 every 8 minutes.  Special Item Find is supposed to increase the drop chance (and the chances of a double or 10 pack dropping) but it's effect seems negligible at best.

Next question: is it just the prologue that's the same for every character or is the whole game like that?

The entire game is the same no matter what character you play and there's a lot of repetition/re-use of content.

Story mode comes in 3 flavours: Normal, Heroic (unlocked after beating Normal or reaching level 25) and SuperHeroic (unlocked after beating Heroic or...some level I can't remember, 45 or 50 I think?). You can ignore it after the first time through it for the splinters if you want but there are certain missions that offer either skill points or permanent health or spirit bonuses the first time you complete them on each difficulty. These are per character.

There's also Midtown Manhattan available from level 1 if you wish to play with other people.  It's limited to a few heroes per instance and I think it goes up in 5 level blocks but not sure as I've never actually used it (because fuck other people).  X-Defense (also a group thing) is a sort of survival mode where you have to protect students at Xavier's against waves of increasingly tough mobs.  From level 22 you can run Green/Red Terminals which are basically just the boss instances.  All of this stuff can be accessed from any terminal/teleport point now, just check the tabs along the top.

There are also legendary quests which start at level 20 that you do alongside/instead of your normal missions (worth noting that if one of these sends you to an area you haven't already unlocked, it will unlock that point for you).  These are currently the best XP in the game and also award you with Odin Marks.  You'll need 300 of these to purchase a Legendary Item at Odin's Palace and 100 for each artifact you want to bless, which is done at the Enchanter also in Odin's Palace. You can reroll LQs if you get one you don't like but it costs an increasing amount of credits as you get higher level so may not be an options if you're just starting out.

Think that about covers it.  There's the Danger Room coming soon (should be the next patch or two) which are 1- or 2-person challenges.  Oh and PvP but that's apparently very broken and still technically in beta or something.

That's really bad then. I might have been tempted to buy some heroes but this makes me want to play a single character, much less multiple ones.


 I'm so frustrated with movement I can't even imagine PvP'ing.

I finally got a complete unique set on Ms. Marvel.  Guess I need to play someone else. I'm having way too much fun playing this. A few more maps or another game mode without a different currency would be nice.

David Brevik of Diablo 2 realy has made a better Diablo 3 with this game. Just got my second character to 60. Cyclops is amazing with richocet shot. I like Ms. Marvel more though.

This gets repetitive quick, the starter chars suck, the f2p is oppressive.

Yeah sadly this and NWNO both are just too pushy with their cash shop stuff. Feels icky. Probably Star Trek was too but I was having too much fun to care.

I'm not seeing the oppressive cash shop. Every character can be unlocked with 175 shards or 200-800 if you go for a specific one. A shard drops every eight minutes. So thats 24 hours of playing to unlock a chatacter.

And as for the starter characters stinking, Storm is probably the best character in the game.

Storage space is a bit pricey at 5 bucks a slot. But look on eBay for a 2650g pack for 5 bucks and that will buy you a ton of space. (You can only use those codes once per account).

So for giggles I started playing Storm. I didn't realize items can give you access to skills you don't have yet; I spent the last few days abusing as many of those as possible, as well as some artifact that gave +14% AoE radius. I kill stuff that's off screen now.  :why_so_serious:

What I'd like to play is a char that has range and can tank a bit, so I'm assuming that's Ms. Marvel or Iron Man. Does Thor use lightning?

Ms. Marvel is range and tank yes.

Enjoying this quite a bit. The characters all feel like they have a good variety for playstyles and they successfully capture the feeling of playing as Marvel characters. Gambit throws lots of flashy explosive things and has good mobility/melee options, Human Torch has lots of fancy fire effects and AoE attacks, etc.

I don't mind the cash shop either. $5-10 bucks for a character seems pretty fair when you consider how different they each play, and that games like Diablo 3 managed to cost $60 (and be awful) even if you only wanted to play 1 out of 5 classes. None of the other cash shop stuff seems that necessary, save for maybe respec tokens (which I think can also drop via normal gameplay?). I was bummed that the character I wanted wasn't available to pick out of the gate for free, but when you consider they're giving you the entire game for free it's pretty reasonable. I definitely prefer the "ownership" F2P models like this rather than the consumable/energy/power models that impact how fun the game actually is based on whether you pay.

I just found out that if you load up the Test Client (https://marvelheroes.com/test-center) you get a bunch of free G and can try out heroes and costumes for free. Progress gets wiped occasionally (not sure how often) but it will at least let you check out a hero's first few abilities before you buy.

Actually, the "G" shop on test sells items that give you a complete set of Unique gear and also an item that takes you to max level. So you can test out any hero at max level before you buy them for reals.

anyone else have problems with memory leaks/freezes? I tried uninstalling/reinstall but it's still happening.

oh and I take back what I said earlier. I have Luke Cage now and while he may be less powerful than Storm I think he's more fun..

Everyone playing does. I generally restart the game when the leak gets annoying. On the SSD it doesn't have near the problem though.

Bought Loki bundle this weekend.  Very disappointed with fortune cards, way too many boosters which are boring. Loki is totally OP at the low levels. we'll see how long that lasts.

He was totally op at all levels when i played him, but that was mostly the bug that let you shit out clones with no limit.

Yeah he was god mode at release using the pet build, but he's still very strong, and I use him as my main character to farm cosmic terminals and x-defense.  He's one of the few characters you can hit 60 with and jump right into cosmics without dying repeatedly, primarily due to his teleport. 

I have Loki at 45 or so and he's pretty strong with just points in the ice tree. Illusions do a good job of boosting survivability even with no investment beyond the automatic 1 point in the clone-generating teleport. I haven't been focusing on him since Scarlet Witch already fills the "overpowered AoE mage" niche for me, but he could easily have been my main if I'd played him first.

There's a lot of crying on the forum about cosmic terminals being "artificial difficulty" filled with unavoidable one-shots, which is starkly counter to my experience. My SW was able to run them without dying as a fresh 60, and lately I've been doing just fine farming cosmic MODOK with, of all things, melee Hawkeye. I guess it's better than the playerbase complaing that the game isn't HARDCORE COCKPUNCH-y enough, though.

Really liking the game but the lack of original content + inventory management brings it down a peg. I will say I'm happy with the free 50 slots but as a hoarder it took me less than a few hrs to fill them up.  :why_so_serious: (Actually I prestiged a char to random a free costume; ended up being a char I don't own yet :/)

I've been playing this the past few days and for some reason it seems like its a lot more fun than it was before.  I collected enough eternity splinters to get a free random character which turned out to be...Dr. Strange. :rock:

It's a decent alternative to d3. Much larger mob groups.

I randomly logged back into this the other day after playing for all of about 5 minutes at launch. I echo Ginaz. I don't know what changed, but it's a lot more fun now.

Bit disheartened by my second random character box though. First was Taskmaster, so neat that I got one of the new ones. Second was just a repeat of my starting character. I know I can use that to upgrade my ult, but still, annoyed at the odds. Slightly more than 3% chance I'd pull a repeat.

Random needs to be less random. Like it should re-roll twice to try to get a new hero.

I have yet to try this out, but I see people saying it is a lot like Diablo.  The 'fun curve' for me in Diablo (I, II, and III) pretty much peaked out at ~18 hours of play and then slowly declined after that point.  Does this have the same issue?

I can't imagine you lasting much longer with Marvel Heroes.  You're probably just not into the arpg genre.  Of course, I've put hundreds of hours into D3 and about 50 with MH but I only lasted a dozen or so with Path of Exile, a game people have been raving about for awhile now.

He is apparently the worst hero in the game.  Someone made a helpful, and probably subjective, list ranking each hero.  If you're new to the game and trying to decide which starter hero to use, try Scarlet Witch.  Its funny that both the "best" and "worst" heroes are both starter heroes.

To be fair, he was my starter.

I let my 5 year old choose my first hero and ended up with Colossus  :oh_i_see: I would have taken something with some better ranged options like Storm, but oh well. I picked up Hawkeye as a freebie too, but haven't played him yet.

Thing was the one I got to start, and then Storm and Scarlet Witch as extras before they revamped the whole hero process to use the splinters.  I then got Captain America with the random splinters, and bought Punisher because I wanted to shoot guns (and now he's a starting hero, doh).

Thing seemed ok, if sort of bland.  Run around and punch people.  He has a big jump, which goes far with me.  I like barbarian leaping.

Punisher is similar, he seems to get the job done but is kinda boring.  Hold down button, bullets kill people, the end.

Those are the only two I've gotten to 30, though I've been playing more now that I'm getting close to 175 more shards for a random Thing #2 or whatever.

It's basically Diablo but with some differences.   I like leveling people way more than paragoning people, this game is better at that for me since each hero is basically a different class with different abilities.  However, it seems like you end up with way more points than you 'need' - you've got room on your bar for like 7 things and you seem to get enough points to cap out about 5 of them, so the choices are not quite as full of choice as it might seem.

The animations and framerate are nothing like Diablo 3.  I don't know if it took a hit at some point or if it was always like that but going back to it after Diablo 3 2.0, it looks super jerky and crude.  Something is off about the screen scrolling, it really bugs me.  The screen is also always full of loot and crap, it's a fairly gaudy mess.  And the progression system with the crafters is pretty confusing.

The terminals/legendary quests are basically the same as bounties (really the other way around, the terminals were first), so those are cool for popping in for a 20 minute session where you feel like you get something done.

And of course, because I'm cheap, I think one of the best parts is that, if you can resist the lure of buying stupid costumes, you can play it for free and get everything meaningful eventually (heroes, the new minions, etc).  It's cool they haven't really cracked and prohibited that yet. 

Stash tabs are pretty meaningful if you do any collecting (relics and runes will fill your stash, forget about crafting mats) and can only be bought with cash. They recently expanded inventory space by quite a bit so this is less of an issue now, but still I have six stash tabs and I'd be hard-pressed to make do with less than three.

I'm still grinding out gear on Hawkeye. 4/5 uniques now, but I'm not sure if any of them are the best choice for my build, and Hawkeye's unique for the slot I'm missing (Goliath Serum) looks amazing. 3k+ health and a bunch of offensive stats? Yes please.

Scarlet Witch is on her blue (second) prestige. They recently added a 6th prestige level (cosmic/yellow) that multiplies all experience requirements by 25. I'll probably never hit red, let alone get through yellow, but I can dream.

Also have Black Widow at 45 in anticipation of her review. Planning to do a brutal build with Stinging Barrage because I've heard that fun increases proportionally with red numbers.

My 175 shard random dude is ... Black Panther.  Another starting hero, curses.  At least he's high on that 'fun chart' Ginaz posted.  :lol:

I got another free random hero yesterday, Colossus.  I only played him a bit but its different from the other heroes I have because they are mostly ranged while he seems to be all melee.  I think I prefer getting a random hero instead of being able to pick one.  I like the element of surprise.

On a side note, I've almost gotten my Iron Man to 60 (58 now) and I have to highly recommend him to anyone.  He really is a lot of fun to play, esp. if you take the missile based skills.

You nailed it, I think.  I gave this a shot, but it seems to have become highly repetitive and simplistic.  As a 15th level Hawkeye, I don't seem to worry about any defensive tactics at all.  With the slight exception of boss battles where I need to use some very basic tactics... sometimes.

The most efficient thing you can do would be to level Cyclops to 60. (He has a bonus 10% to future character's experience) (Plus you get a 30% bonus for your first 60 I believe).

Storage space and costumes are really the only thing that never drops in game.  I would buy a 2600G nvidia code off ebay for 10 bucks or so (One time use of the nvidia codes per account), Then buy some storage slots and then this weekend buy some of the cheap characters and hope your buy one get one is an expensive one. Or just buy whoever you want to play.  This weekend is going to be crazy with drops.

If you're looking for heroes to buy, Scarlet Witch is one of the cheapest at only 200G (not sure what that translates into real $$$) and she is apparently the "best" hero currently in the game.  Another good 200g choice is Taskmaster, one of the newer heroes.  Unless you really want to play a certain hero, I would buy something else because you can get free random heroes pretty easily and quickly just by playing.  In the 2+ weeks I've been back, I've already gotten 2 free heroes with the shards.  Stash space (and costumes if that's your thing) is probably what you would want to spend money on.  If you ARE looking to buy a hero, Iron Man and Deadpool are both really fun and effective.

I'm still a big fan of Princess Sparklefists. They really reworked her a LOT since I last played.

She's a lot better than when the game first came out.  I've been happy with Ms. Marvel, Squirrel Girl, Nightcrawler, and Emma.  They all play differently enough that I enjoy it, but not so differently as to feel lost.  It looks like Scarlet Witch has improved, too, but I haven't tried her since beta.

On Eternity Splinters - Let's say I develop a hero to have a defensive ability that'll kill off enemies faster than they hurt me.  Then, I place my character in some corner of a map wher enemies will wander past me every once in a while - meaning I'll kill enemies about once a minute without doing anything.... could I just have the game running in the background and then come back and find dozens of Eternity Splinters waiting for me? Anyone try something like this to farm splinters?

MM is the only one I can reliably solo Cosmics with (and by solo I mean zero deaths). I love DD and Moon Knight though.

Eternity Splinters do last longer than most other loot but will eventually despawn, I'd say somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes.  The most obvious spot I've seen people doing this is Ruined Projects in chapter 5 since there is almost constant waves of Purifiers attacking but it's only good for certain level ranges.  The best heroes to do this with are ones with a damage aura and some form of regen (Storm works fairly well) or those with permanent pets like Emma or Luke Cage.  If you have any of the new Team Ups they should probably work as well.  The way experience works in MH as long as you have done damage to something recently (and the timeframe is pretty generous) you get full XP and loot for any mobs that die in your vicinity.  So even if you miss out on some of the loot you can gain a couple of levels in the background while you're off doing something else.

As far as I remember the devs do not consider this an exploit (although you should probably do a forum search to check if this has changed) and won't take action against players doing it, but they are working on a way to combat AFK leeching in places like MM so it may come to an end soon.  Also at Ruined Projects some players like to kite the Mega Sentinel over so he stomps the AFKers  :grin:

Are any of the classes with pets viable using mostly/only pets? Summon Necro was always my favorite in Diablo 2 because I could just sit back and watch my guys do the work for me (plus the occasional curse/CE).

The Splinters are pretty rare drops, but they have a 8 minute or so failsafe, so the actual way to cheese this is to go into the game, kill guys until an Eternity Splinter drops, set a stopwatch for 8 minutes, beam back to base, alt-tab until your alarm goes off, beam back, kill until Splinter drops, repeat.   

It works, you don't get logged out and the base beamer thing cooldown is less than this, but you do actually have to push some buttons.  Sometimes it takes a little bit to get one but it's usually pretty fast.  It works well if you have something semi-boring you are doing at the computer that can be interrupted.   175 splinters for random hero divided by about 7 or so splinters an hour  = 25 hours.    Probably faster to finish the story first and get the 100 or whatever you get at the end first.   :grin:

Be extra sure to log on tomorrow (Saturday) for the Easter basket. Most of the 10 events go on all week, but the Easter basket is Saturday only and I think contains at least one guaranteed unique for the hero that opens it (mine had two last time - both dupes, of course, but still).

I know I'm just falling prey to marketing, but the buy one get one hero deal was too good to pass up. Threw money at this and just started buying the cheapest heroes and working my way up. Ended up with a pretty good chunk of the lineup.

Don't know why I'm having so much more fun with this than I am with Diablo (yes even, after RoS). Maybe it's just because it's new to me and there's a wider range of characters to play, and more incentive to play different ones.

I played.  I got bored with Hawkeye.  I put it aside thinking I would not return... and then decided to give it another shot.  It was still repetitive and simplistic, but it seemed to be more fun.

I think they're making a mistake giving only one starting character.  They need to give you two - one you choose and another that is semi-randomly chosen to be different than the first (if your first is Hawkeye, they make sure the second one is not also an exclusively ranged character).  I think I'd have had more fun if I put Hawkeye aside for a bit and played a Colussus, Thing, Captain America or something else with melee action.

If you play through the campaign, you should have enough splinters to buy a random character outright.

Of course, if you're stuck with something meh like Hawkeye, that can be tough.

It's guaranteed actually. You get 100 near the beginning of the campaign and 100 for killing Dr. Doom the first time. That's enough for a random and some change, or enough to flat out buy one of the cheaper heroes, even neglecting any additional shards ever dropping.

I don't understand the Hawkeye hate. He's not overly *interesting*, but it's a Diablo-like, I don't really find any classes interesting, per se, just various degrees of effective or not.

Hah, I'm the exact opposite.  Since any character can just blow through the campaign and the green terminals in this game, I want one that is interesting to play!

Got Moon Knight in mine.  Was pretty good going since he's 1 of only 5 heroes I don't have. :grin:  Bought Squirrel Girl with splinters earlier since I'd heard good things about her mini-review and she has crazy sustain.  30 squirrels out each healing you every time they hit adds up pretty quick.

I got sick of all the space crafting mats take up so i donated all of them to the crafter.  That was probably a bad idea since the bar hardly moved.  I did get one of the few heroes i was missing from that random code so thanks for that!.

I got the Hulk.  Sadness.

I did get a dark phoenix costume for Jean Gray, so yay.

I got Squirrel Girl as my freebie and a Dominatrix costume for Jean, who I don't own.

I got Ms Marvel (meh) and Hawkeye (d'oh) and a Punisher costume from the era of Punisher I read religiously so (yay) but I don't own Punisher obv.

So I have Scarlet Witch and Daredevil.

I'm remembering how I had a hard time with this game. You just run around and stuff happens but I'm never sure what I should actually be doing and what I should be ignoring.

All in all without the go deeper to kill demons simplicity I find myself feeling very aimless as I wander around killing shit. Also the game seems crazy easy compared to when I played it a long while ago. Mobs do almost no damage to me now compared to then.

Hit level 20 and you unlock legendary quests. If you want simplicity, you can just chain those ad infinitum. They're quick and as soon as you finish one you automatically get another. They're better experience than anything else and every one you do gives you odin marks that you need to purchase legendaries or enchant artifacts.

And yeah, even without making any effort to play defensively, it's almost actively difficult to die in the first difficulty mode. That changes as you progress.

Common (turqoise) crafting mats drop like candy so it's probably fine. I've had a stash page full of the max rank ones forever and I will probably sell most of them just to free up space.

What about all this fucking stuff in my inventory? I can't figure out what the rune stone things are for, it says go to the dude but his 3 tabs seem related to completely other shit.

Oh and what is the need of level'd vendor vs level'd crafter vs credits? With all these event things dropping that can either but sold or xp'd I find myself wondering.

Most people say Crafter > Enchanter > Other vendors > Money. I left crafter at 10 while maxing enchanter and don't regret it, but only because my unique drops while leveling up Hawkeye were shitty and also shitty, and he's the only character I care about min/maxing right now.

Save your runes if you can, but the 270-cost ones are pretty common so don't feel too bad about vendoring those.

Relics (pink names): keep Gibborim (+spirit) and Lemuria (+life on hit) for sure. The shittiest ones are tenacity, move speed, damage return, and crit damage so feel free to leave those behind.

Artifacts (orange): Low level stuff is whatever. Once you get to 30 or so you want to start paying attention to which ones are valuable for trade. Too much to list off the top of my head, but if it doesn't have at least a couple hundred points in a couple different damage stats it's probably not worth much.

Anything that says something to the effect of "collect these and sell or donate them" is event-specific vendor junk; donate them to your crafter.

Crafting mats (turqoise) can be farmed as needed; I think the only thing you need a large amount for is rerolling costume affixes but you can't do that until you level your crafter some anyway.

Eternity Splinters and Cube Shards are currency used to buy rare shit so hang onto them.

Gear can generally be vendored if you're not using it right now. Hang onto your uniques though as your crafter can make them useful later, even low-level ones.

Decided to give this a go again. Things are going better, mostly because I got Loki as my free hero and he is a fucking house. No cooldown spammable teleport that leaves a clone behind to punch things with you invisible is so boss. Hopefully the rest of the clone skills turn out as fun.

I got one of the nvidia codes off ebay and grabbed Scarlet Witch, Iron Man, and Rocket Racoon, netting Wolverine, Black Panther and Spider-Man for free, along with Colossus as my starter. Debating spending the last of my G on either Storm for another roll at a free hero, or just grabbing a stash tab.

Other than that I'll echo that they could use some serious work on clarifying WTF your supposed to be doing at any given time, and how all the countless systems work together.

I think ezrast pretty much covered it, but I'll just reiterate that you probably want to sell stuff to the crafter until they hit level 10 before anything else. That's the point at which you can unlock the costume core crafting which can give your costume slot some special or rare find and other useful stats.

After crafter level 10, the enchanting stuff seems a lot more worthwhile to me than further leveling the main crafter. The enchanter gives runewords and enchants which don't drop in the game, whereas the normal crafter can't even craft the best two tiers of equipment (cosmics and uniques). I guess if you really want the ability to unbind artifacts and trade them around it's worthwhile.

Also, I'd say just keep all of the relics. You never know; they might rebalance the shitty ones, and identical relics stack to 1000, so it's not going to bleed your bank space all that much.

Oh, and apparently there's a currency cap of 3 million credits, which isn't all that hard to hit even if you never actually sell gear. Keep that in mind.

Yeah, they need a tutorial of some sort to explain how the game systems work.  Its not that complicated once you figure it out but getting there in the first place is difficult.

So I had downloaded this game earlier this week to finally try it out.  Log in yesterday and all the starting heroes looked pretty uninspiring since every single one that I was interested in was blocked off.  Decided to try Widow.  logged in, got all the goodies and my free hero was... Rocket Raccoon, who out of all the heroes in the entire game is at the very bottom of the list of ones I would ever play.  Whatever, I'll just pretend they weren't giving away a free hero I guess.

Start playing.  Get to level 5 and the game crashes.  Try to start it up again and the game just hangs before ever loading up.  Reboot, try the repair thing, nothing helps.  The game just won't start for some reason.  Completely uninstall the whole game and reinstall it, which means I can't play again until today.  Game actually starts up after being reinstalled.  Yay!  Get to level 9 and I'm on the Table of Life and Time.  The tablet isn't there.  Look around for a while to see if there's some kind of trick I'm missing.  Nope.  Log out and log back in again, still not there.  Exit the game completely, wait a half hour, log back in and the tablet still isn't there.

So since I can't progress in the game anymore, I'll just chalk this up as a giant waste of time.

This tells you what areas are in "reaper mode" for the extra goodness. I assume its massive increased drop rates because getting 4 levels in midtown I got something like 6 uniques and several cosmics.

It may be that doing whatever is in reaper mode is worth more than doing the legendary odin currency quests is worth. I have used a bunch of credits RNG'ing the quest to be in the area I want to be in for reaper droprates but I have no fucking clue if that was smart. Also its annoying since everyone said fuck credits but I wished I had more credits.

Best of my knowledge the reaper mode just doubles or triples the amount of loot you get from nameds.

I wouldn't say it's worth more than odin mark currency. You need 300 odin marks to get a legendary. You need 100 for each artifact you enchant. So if you ever really want to max out a character, you'll need 700 of them, which takes a looooot of legendary quest grinding.

Personally, I never reroll legendary quests. The only ones I'd be tempted to be reroll would be some of the annoying ones that require killing x of a particular hard to find mob in midtown, but midtown itself is such ridiculously good xp that I just grin and bear it and grind while looking for the right mob type. Once I'm close to the currency cap, I'll probably be more selective.

Midtown is crazy right now. I had to take a break from it cause my elbow is getting sore from all the clicking -- just like the good old days of Diablo II. The multi-boss encounters (3 or 4 at a time) there are respawning every 5 minutes or so after they are defeated. That's barely enough time to run back to the base at the top of the map and sell/donate/stash your stuff before the next one starts up. The same fast respawn is happening with other event bosses in some of the other zones but at my low level (29 currently) those other zones only spawn a single boss.

Quickest leveling for people just starting out would be Legendary Quests (LQs) once you hit 20 as mentioned above. There are ways to level up even faster if you have the cash to reroll LQs and have special items and stuff -- e.g. rerolling to LQs that you can do in the Holo-Sim apparently gives the absolutely best XP as the Holo-Sim gives very good XP by itself.

You can Google for more detailed guides (like what are all the items you need to max out your XP bonuses).

Odin Marks are for enchanting artifacts (Legendary Blessings) and buying Legendary items (also mentioned above). Cube Shards you can turn in to Clea for Fortune Cards and other stuff.

Edit: BTW something I learned today is if you have a Team-Up character you can CTRL-Right Click to move stuff to and from the Team-Up inventory panel.

Eh, not really. Like, they're better than purples, so you could kickstart a fresh 60 with them, but I'd rather just take my chances with ghost boxes while I farm up "real" uniques.

Although you could justify it by saying you're putting a max RiF set together, which is as valid an endgame goal as anything in this game.

Except when you get to the final story boss -- that guy is an asshole and a big jump in difficulty. Oh and Pyro can be a pain too.

Iron-man is ridiculously overpowered compared to Colossus.

Yeah, I shouldn't have said it didn't get hard until the second difficulty. The whole final chapter actually is a noticeable jump in difficulty. I've been assuming that was because it was added post-launch, and has different mob tuning coefficients in place.

For those who have not tried rocket raccoon is actually pretty decent. He is a bit slow in some parts leveling up but with his shield I have yet to die with him when my hawkeye has gone splat more than a few times. I hit the mid 20s to unlock his high end damage power Big Flarkin Gun and holy crap he is now truly hilarious. It is like a giant flashlight of death that you can just sweep across the screen to melt armies.

With that his two supression turrets which are aoe damage/stun turrets and groot he can can mosh a stupid number of targets very rapidly.

Yeah Rocket Raccoon can be pretty OP. The best X-Defense I've been in so far (still at the mid-levels) was mostly cause of the RR player that was in the group. He also has the best quips so far of the heroes I've tried.

Despite being rather silly, and never having heard of either of them before playing this game, RR and SG have turned out to be two of my favourite characters in the game.  And two of the most survivable.  Although I could really do without hearing "Let's go Tippy-Toe!" or "Get em gang!" every time I use Sic Em  :oh_i_see:

Deadpool has by far the best quips.

Squirrel Girl does the same thing Ms. Marvel does, where the more shit around you the more you output. Which leads to hilarity in the Holo-sim.

Someone explain brutal strike to me please.

They're pretty much super crits.  If you have some brutal strike rating, every time you crit you roll again and if it falls within whatever your brutal strike percentage is, it hits for whatever your brutal damage rating gives you.  Base is 300%.

It's generally safe to assume that brutal strike rating/damage are worse stats than whatever else you could be gearing for. They're a good bonus on top of whatever you're picking up anyway, but aiming specifically for high brutals is a mistake until you or someone else does the math to prove that it's not.

In particular, Crit Damage affects crits and brutals equally, making Brutal Damage a strictly inferior stat on a 1-for-1 basis.

This makes me desperately want to come up with a viable Ultimate Nullifier build.

Is there any point on keeping low level crafting elements around (Tier 1 - Tier whatever) if you don't plan on crafting low level items? Or to put it another way for a level 60 hero are there useful items that you can craft that require the low level elements?

One high level element turns into like a million low level ones, so i would imagine no.

If you are tight on space it makes no sense.

Yeah this is a pretty boring event, especially if, like me, you get tired of boss rushing quickly.  Midtown is by far the best/most fun bonus to me, but I can't complain too much after the last event.  I  imagine the 1 Year Anniversary event is gonna be pretty huge, especially with the Omega System and raid all coming around then as well.

So on the Test Center is their new "One-shot story" which is basically a terminal that has its own self-contained plot, rather than being an out-of-context dungeon ripped from the main story. This week on Marvel Heroes, we're traveling to Wakanda to help King T'Challa address a dire threat to his country. So, what dastardly villains could be posing enough of a threat to this technologically advanced nation to warrant calling in the aid of Avengers and X-Men?

Yup. Literal spear-chuckers in loincloths and tribal paint. Just in case you hadn't already picked up on the fact that Wakanda is in Africa and needed the extra visual reference, because this is what Africans look like.

Now, I never read any of Black Panther's comics so I have no idea how much of this is grandfathered in because it comes from some bullshit decade before Americans understood that cultural sensitivity was a thing you could have but gets published anyway because blah blah iconic villains, fanbase, editorial oversight from Marvel, whatever. But could they really not think of a better way to introduce the country to the playerbase than by having us put down a bunch of fucking savages with blowguns?

BP tells us they reject the sudden modernization of Wakanda and "want to keep things the way they have been for hundreds of years" which I call bullshit on because a) we are looking at bronze age technology here; hundreds of years my ass, and b) there's no way these guys are hanging out in their loincloths telling each other "You know what? Fuck all this money and power; I much prefer sitting in a mud hut and spending my days hand-rolling couscous so that we don't all starve if we displease the Gazelle Spirit this year" or whatever. Africa has many obstacles to modernization; this is not one of them.

But whatever, the important thing is that Tony Masters up there from the good ol' USA was able to fly in and lend a helping hand. Because the kingdom that is built entirely around its weapons industry just can't quite come up with a solution to this problem without a little backup from whitey.

That's sadly pretty much what Wakanda is in the comics AND all content has to be OK'ed by Marvel.

I've always liked Wakanda for that reason, they had tech, they just chose to dress traditional.  I figured those spears shot lasers or something.  At least that was my take on it and maybe that makes me a bad person.

I like the Priest version: there's the city dwellers, who live in cities  pretty much like any place else you'd see, and then there are the tribespeople; there is a mutual loathing and hatred for one another.

While it bears little resemblance to the real world it must be noted that  Wakanda is unlike any other African nation (or at least any that I'm aware of). They still worship their pagan god, because he's (she's?) a real freaking god. They were never under European imperial control either. So IMO it's kind of like early Byrne FF's Latveria: one of the most technologically advanced civilizations on earth, but the common folk are stuck in time (I'm assuming it's that way because it reminds Doom of his younger days, and that's the way Latveria should stay, dammit).

I think Latveria is supposed to be some tiny country near Transylvania, but since the spelling is so close to Latvia I just imagine that's the country they're talking about.

Genosha is supposed to be some small island near Madagascar iirc.

I've literally never read a single comic involving Wakanda so I have no idea where it's supposed to be (besides somewhere in the sub-Sahara I suppose).

Yup that is all pretty much cannon. Heck if you watch the ultimate avengers 2 on netflix I believe that is all around black panther and wakanda. One thing to note about the spear chuckers though they all are using vibranium tipped weaponry so their arrows and shields are capable of penetrating just about anything.

So I got my first hero to 60 when I dinged rocket raccoon in the loot fury that was midtown over the weekend. So I was messing with some low level heroes to see which I would play next. In messing with squirrel girl it is hard not to be amused with a champ thats super powers is squirrelmancy and nut kicking.

They really nailed Squirrel Girl.  She's campy, kick-ass, and other heroes either mock or adore her.  She keeps on going like it's all sunshine and happy adventure though, and really hopeful the Avengers will take note Any Day Now.

Nightcrawler - Honestly loves her happy outlook.
Rocket Racoon - Thinks she's a complete nut and wants her to get away.
Emma Frost - SG doesn't mock her skimpy outfits, just wonders if she gets cold in them.

All her nut facts - She's insane, but in a completely harmless lovable eccentric aunt sort of way.

Loki who condescending mocks absolutely everyone else has this to say "Squirrel girl! finally an enemy worthy of my admiration".

Yeah they did an excellent job with Squirrel Girl. The only thing I don't like about playing her is in X-Def if I want to min-max I need to spam Squirrel Saboteurs between rounds to keep my squirrel count high.

Her squirrel passive also doubles as an active squirrel summon, it's not immediately apparent.

But that works through Sic 'Em? And I can't use that ability without a target?

Squirrel Friend (in the MOAR SQUIRRELS! line, first skill) - It's the passive that makes your squirrels better. It's also an active that you can use to summon half a dozen squirrels, short CD. Just drag it to your bar.


Squirrel starts to look really weird as a word the more you type it.

I still haven't finished Borderlands 2 and all the DLC crap, haven't finished Skyrim, haven't finished Fallout 3 or NV, and have PA too...and I'm trying to study for a certification. And Sony just dropped there games in my lap too, is DCU any fun? I've not followed allot there comics.

I read a lot of complaints about Thor, and basically never see anyone play him. The others are all decent-to-good depending on whom you ask.

I'm a bit over Hawkeye since I figured out another melee build that's more effective but less fun, and his Precise Aim got nerfed. Been playing Taskmaster instead. He's clearly OP based on how everyone on his official forum keeps talking about how well-balanced he is. Very versatile and fun, to boot.

I love Mk, but that my love may be gear dependent. Like I wrote somewhere else, he's the only character I've ever played where I want to have low health/spirit. If you go avatar of vengeance route, the passives gives boosts to crit rating as a function of health loss, and dmg rating as a function of spirit loss. I also have "Last Chance" a unique that gives a gazillion in crit rating and crit dmg if you are below 50% health. I've done a brutal hit for over 3 million. I've seen others claim 4.5  :why_so_serious:

I'm a huge Thor fan, first char to 60, so weigh the following with that knowledge.  I enjoy playing him, but he is a bit fragile.  I play him as a hybrid of ranged and melee whereas I think many people expect to be able to play him straight-up melee. 

Capt America is fun.  Also need to play him as something of a hybrid, but, imo, that is consistent with the cartoon char (I'm talking form reading them in the mid 70s.  Possibly he has newer moves)

Hawkeye is boring, but I never read or liked Hawkeye.  Fun aside: virtually every male hero in the game gives Hawkeye shit for being useless.  A number of female heroes flirt with Hawkeye.

Deadpool: adding this one even though you didn't ask.  He is fun to play in either mode (ranged/melee).  He has the funniest lines in the game.  I never read Deadpool, so I wasn't a fan or anything (got him in random).

I also like Ms Marvel, Dr Strange and Nightcrawler (from a 'fun to play' perspective).

Nightcrawler is really fun if you like a mobile character.  I bamf all over the friggin' place, and they made his smoke effects look awesome.

Taskmaster is incredibly fun to play, damn near OP in effectiveness and a bargain at 200 splinters.

A note on the 'strong/weak' issue: They rebalance constantly.  I would not focus too much on whether a hero is too strong or too weak, because they'll rebalance it before you know it.  Their general approach seems to try to bring the weaker heroes up to the level of the stronger heroes.  There are still some that are going to be stronger if you strategically know how to use them better, and some they do not yet realize are stronger than others, but if you like a hero and wish s/he was stronger - it probably will be eventually.

In general I agree.  Also, as they adjust the toons typically become a lot more fun to play.  Rebalancing tends to be both to power and play-ability.  They really do a good job in that regard.

For me, Ironman is the problem child in that regard.  I want to play a repulsor-based Ironman (cause, you know, 70s comics), but that is kind of the weakest/least fun Ironman.  The one-off is very strong... but I found it very boring.

Hawkeye is a decent hero. His taunt arrow is pretty amazing and he does awesome damage. His main problem is he is a big squishy but if you want a glass cannon he does that very well.

He is an awesome buy at 200 splinters he pretty much has the best moves of three other champs all in one package.

Is taskmaster suppose to be a comedic character like SG and DP?

Thor is awaiting his class review still, so he'll feel a bit underwhelming until then. As mentioned earlier though, they are very quick about actually getting class changes done.

He is a lot like Deadpool yeah, not quite as funny or crazy but he mostly makes fun of the other "heroes" and the fact that he is playing a good guy.

You figure out which one of her toggle aura's is the giant area damage one then walk around and collect your loot.

Purchase Magik to tank for you, then just use Crashing Hail, Lightning Storm, and Lightning Column. Thundering Bolt is good if you need to interrupt (stun) somebody.

Not quite 60 yet but it's been working for me.

Psylocke is pretty neat as long as you aren't expecting her stealth melee tree to be good or really make any sense. A lot of people on the Test Center complained about her secondary resource being limiting but I like the pacing it provides, where you're regularly switching between spending one resource while building the other.

I am not sure I would use her stealth tree on its own but having some moves in with the other powers seems pretty effective. She does wind up stealthing from time to time anyway due to her long steal being tied to her CC break so most are at very least going to have that on their bar so may as well throw in one of the huge damage from stealth moves. I also like the flying lotus drop becaues it looks cool as hell and is a nice aoe. So far the psi resource seems fine balance wise although it looks like they did revamp the construct line a bit before I think the only basic attack from it was psi dagger and now you can take psi crossbow as a basic attack/builder as well.

Get some doc Ock arms, a doc Ock medallion, a peluvian and just giggle.

Flying lotus is one of her best moves, i'm maxing that + psi assault + psi strike + all the passives.

Someone here needs to find out what their one year celebration will entail.

I just started and maxing gusting tempest, lightning column, lightning storm, spirited and crashing hail are making me a pretty happy camper for now.  Only a few buttons to manage and you AoE everything.


I love that his voice actor is Steve Blum (of Cowboy Bebop dub fame).

This game has somehow gotten more fun since the last time I tried it.  No idea what changed but I'm having a great time as Dr. Strange.

Psylocke feels like a much lamer nightcrawler.

There is definitely some fun here.  I wish I had more than the Torch to play but I don't feel like putting out cash.  Been collecting eternity shards though.  The game isn't very sticky for me though.

I suspect the problem is that you're playing Torch.  I couldn't get in to him either, so I dropped enough cash to buy the hero I wanted - Strange - and bam lots of fun. Considering it's f2p and $5 is about what I pay for Steam games these days it's worth it, IMO.

Getting through the story on normal gets you enough shards to get another random hero and takes a couple, three hours tops.

For an experienced guy not distracted by all the side quests, perhaps.  I'm going on 8 hours now and have only hit chapter 3.

Kind of like how you CAN do Diablo 3 in its entirety in less than four hours, you're not doing that as a first time player.

Count me in as well. The game is fantastic. I reinstalled largely out of curiosity about the spearchuckers and exactly how bad they are--answer is they're really really bad. I think I played a couple of hours in beta and was underwhelmed. Plus, I have a vague memory you had to pay for a hero to start? Or maybe that was just the impression I got from their overdone marketing. Now, I can't stop playing. It seems well thought out in so many ways, really good at straddling the line between an ARPG and MMO.

I have Storm and got Jean Grey for my easy freebie, who I really don't care for--I hate the Phoenix avatar and too close in gameplay to Storm. I'm only 10 shards away from a second random though. I'm holding off on buying things as a lot of people are expecting a buy one get one free sale for the anniversary.

I love Torch.  Was second or third hero to 60.

I found his fireballs underwhelming.  Try this;

Blazing Arc Fire: basic, spirit builder
Blazing Charge: use this a lot,even at max level.  Try to get good with it.  If you don't find zipping around fun, then yeah, you aren't ever going to enjoy Torch.
Fuel for the Fire (passive): keep this maxed
Thermal Intensity (passive): one point wonder
Scorching Pyre


Those will take you to the point when you get Flame On.  Once you get Flame On use that with Blazing Charge to zip around and kill everything.

At the high end:
Big Combo: Flame On + Scorching Pyre + Extreme Combustion
Boss Killer: Incinerating Blast

Brazier of Balthakk and Doc Oc's medalion.

To make him more durable use the Relic of Lemuria.  Probably need to go Fiery Rejuvenation until you can re-spec into Protective Flames

I picked up Ms. Marvel. Wow. I thought the game was fun with Storm. She's amazing.

I bought Cap and got Hawkeye.  I feel cheated somehow. Meh, entitlement issues.

I also had another free hero package sitting in my inventory, though.  Did they do the anniversary thing or did I just get a reward someplace I didn't know about?

The 2nd one was Daredevil. Ehhh, I might give him a shot.

You'll eventually reach a point where your basically immortal on her. Like if it can't one shot you, it won't kill you basically. She's just insanely tanky AND mobile. The few times Proudft and I have run terminals or whatnot together, I'm constantly having to slow myself down since she can just GO, no stopping, no waiting, no obstacle in the way.

I think this game is REALLY starting to pick up.  Its crazy busy at all times of the day and night.

There seems to be a zeitgeist thing going on. They should rebrand it and relaunch.

They've made more positive game changes in the span of little under a year then most games make in five.

No kidding.  My brother played this at launch and declared it stupid, but he jumped back in when I told him I was having fun and here we are.   The turnaround they've achieved is crazy.

It helps they're not afraid to say "this hero sucks" and redo them.  Nor are they afraid to give out freebies.  It earns a lot of good-will.

Invisible Woman is badass.  Fun toon to play.

Yeah, I played for like an hour in open beta, yawned, and uninstalled. At least from me they have been well rewarded for their improvements. I have spent a ludicrous amount of money on the BOGO sale. Squirrel Girl is the most whacked thing I've ever played in a game. I must now go and read all the comics.

I played this for the first time this morning. Picked Storm as my starting hero. Chain Lightening is nice for just killing everything lazily. Sort of reminds me of spamming the little lightning balls in Diablo. It was a nice fun time with the exception of the game somehow grouping me with some assnozzle without any sort of message or asking me if I want to group. Anyway, I'll probably buy a bunch of heroes. I really want She Hulk but it looks like you can only get her in a package deal.

One of the settings auto-groups you in instances, which is on by default.  Turn that off and that won't happen anymore.

That can screw you in story instances sometimes, turn it off.  Lame thing to have on by default.

She-Hulk isn't a playable hero (yet). The bundle you see her in is for a team-up, which is a NPC buddy/sidekick.

It is what accounted for the difficulty I had when I tried the game (I assume the other problem I had was just some weird freak thing).  And the only way to reset an instance (that I'm aware of) is to change heroes or difficulties, neither of which you can do if you've just started playing the game.  I get why they want to encourage people to group but it makes for a very bad first impression if you end up unknowingly grouped with some idiot who kills an end boss and basically strands you with no way to continue.

Staying out for 15 minutes works too, but that is also not an acceptable option for a new player just trying the game.

I'm not sure it it boned me or not, it was the second mission thing that apparently had the Green Goblin. I zoned into the mission and there was nothing left to kill, it was already all dead. About 2/3rds of the way through the map I got a message Green Goblin was defeated. Nothing to kill, no loot, no Green Goblin medal. I went through the teleporter hoping against hope that I'd find Green Goblin to fight but it just took me back to the lobby.

It didn't bone you exactly since green goblin doesn't drop anything you need to continue the quest, but yeah someone came by first and killed everything because of the stupid autogroup thing.  The real problem is when someone does it and grabs the quest item and then you get stuck with no possible way to continue besides logging out for 15 mins.

Anyone played any amount of Scarlet Witch? Curious what skills other people use with her.

I've played her enough that I didn't need to look up any of her ability names while writing this post.

Basically on SW you hit Combusting Hex, Hex Binding, Ravenous Binding, Chaos Warp, repeat ad nauseum. Or until you need to stop to spam Mystic Hex. One point into Ruinous Flux. I usually keep up the aura that clears ground effects but I really don't know how the two stack up against each other. Max Chaos Magic. The immobilize from your bindings is already triggering Tenacity so the pure CC abilities are mostly useless. Bewildering Hex used to ignore Tenacity but it doesn't anymore so if you read something telling you to spam that on bosses, it's outdated.

Chaos Warp is a boring-ass ability though. The most fun I've had with her was when I didn't level it at all and just focused on keeping up DoTs and spamming Chaotic Hex.

SW is my  highest level character, at only 36.

She is basically red death.

You just use a slew of AOEs. AOE pulsing damage, AOE increased damage to foes, pull enemies from the entire screen there, charm them, and then float into the air and pulse insane damage to everything on the screen. Maybe you use an AOE stun before floating or before charming. It depends on where your face hits the keyboard.

Then you teleport a few screens over and do it all over again.

Sometimes you have to left click things to regain mana.

Most of the time you are pushing/pulling enemies across the entire screen and melting them.

Oh, and you do all of this while you have passive area damage things going that do actually reasonable damage themselves.

I bought Scarlet Witch and my free BOGO character was... a second Scarlet Witch.

That is some shitty luck, at least the extra token makes her ult better.

I randomed a couple days ago and got Luke Cage, then I did a BOGO with Black Widow cause she's cheap and I hoped to get something good and got a free Luke Cage token. Latest Random was Luke Cage. I figured the game was telling me something so I tried playing Luke Cage, And I'm not sold on his buildups and finishing moves, but his voice acting is probably the best in the game.

I like Lazy Caging and letting his summons do everything for me.  Heroes for Hire!

Anniversary stuff starts tomorrow, login for gifts.  I believe you need to have a lvl 30 char to qualify.

I missed 2/3 of the free hero chances but the one I did make I got Emma Frost. Who seems like an absolute mess. She has 3 quite distinct trees, one of which seems half broken and the other two that do *not* play nice with eachother. Also pets, I hate pets in ARPG so much.

So now I have both her and Hawkeye that seem not enough fun to bother with.

I'm on the fence about Daredevil I got him to 20-something but he seemed very underpowered, I should go back to him sometime.

So the Scarlet Witch playing continues, I'm a couple of that one currency away from being able to afford a hero lottery pick. I looked at what people posted here and the forums and I can't believe that many people insist on using the most boring skill for her as a build mainstay. Also she has basically only one build.

Daredevil is supposed to be pretty good, not sure about Emma but most people seem to like her also.

I picked-up Spidey and he's.. interesting. Apparently he can be a melee brawler or a ranged guy? I'm looking at his trees and just not sure.

I've got more heroes than I know what to do with now. I should really focus on playing leveling them up.  I was happy to learn last night that you can jump into the patrol missions at level 1 instead of slogging though the story again with new heroes.  That's half of what kept me from leveling any of them again.

Strange, Black Panther, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Daredevil, Captain America, Spidey, Thor and Human Torch and only one of them above 20.  :awesome_for_real:

Which begs a question, you easily can use more than 7 abilities with her. Can you bind hotkeys to the other bars that are not visible? How do people use their 8th-10th abilities?

The UI in the game is still really sucky.

Wow, you got some of the best characters already.  Human torch, Dr Strange and Black panther are definitely top tier.

You can use three actionbars (bound to '1', '2', and '3').  Typically I put the aura's on 2, and the actives on 1.  You only have to turn the auras on when you first go out (unless you use aura's that override eachother).

With Doc Strange I toggle between 1 and 2, because he has a larger number of "one point wonders".  Longer cooldown/less used abilities are typically on the 2 bar.

I bought Strange because he was always one of my favorite characters even though I didn't buy comics regularly as a kid. Panther was a freebie from one of the earlier codes (I think.. or when I bought Strange)  Torch was the guy I got when I started up the account.  Is that random or did I misclick something?

I can tell Strange is top tier. He's awesome fun, which I'm happy about because he was a purchase.

Human torch is a beast but i feel like i'm playing a villain.  The guy has a laugh emote while he is frying common criminals with blasts of fire.

Phoenix form Jean Grey seems to be immortal.

I found her unstoppable and also unplayably dull. I really want a viable build outside of Phoenix.

I hear the mental build is even more effective but even duller.  The mobs just fight each other while you stand around.

Like my Ms. Marvel is tanky in a way that makes me go "This character is super durable and sustainable".

Phoenix form is tanky in a way that makes me go "I wonder when they'll patch this out?"  :why_so_serious:

Yesterday was Moon Knight who I'd honestly never heard of before the game.

I got moonknight from one of the freebies as well. The guy is total loony toons but seems a pretty amusing hero so far. One hilarious comment from him when fighting the shocker in one of the first story line missions is it will take a B lister like me to defeat a B lister like you hahaah.

I love moon knight, his signature skill is devastating single target damage.  Once you get used to not panicking when his health gets low he becomes a total beast.

I really like MK. This game is like crack to altaholics like me. If it had character specific quests I'd never leave the house.  :why_so_serious:

It sounded like they're going to have some character specific achievements at the very least when those get implemented later this month, so might be time to start stockpiling on food.

As a non-browser of reddit I had not heard of ifttt before. Basically, create an account then activate the formula/recipe for your account and it can send emails when reddit posts a giveaway notification for random box heroes. I think someone made an sms version to if someone wants, I just prefer using an email account for it.

There's a new Advance Pack (https://store.marvelheroes.com/wsstore_en_us/badguys-pack.html) up, looks like it'll be around for a week or so according to Gaz. It's pretty impressive if you like most of the characters, but for me it just means Rogue will be in game soon, and that's a good thing. I'm currently waiting for them to put a release date on Beast (my favourite X-man) and X-23, but Rogue was a nice surprise to see fast-tracked.

Anyone have any particular favourite heroes that aren't released or haven't been announced yet? I'd love to see Fantomex in game. Some of the new class of X-men would be nice, too - Quentin Quire, Armor etc, though they'd be nice additions just as NPCs at the school. Glob Herman running around on fire. Beak being... well. Beak.

"Soon" in this case probably means december.  It's one hero release per month (apart from this one that has two) and i believe rogue is supposed to be the last one. As far as missing favorites go, i've heard zero talk of Bishop who should be pretty popular right now because of the movie and already has an in game model.

Warlock from the New Mutants would be fun just for the innanity of it.  I'd love to see how they do a Quicksilver.  Hank Pym - with the ability to be Giant Man or Ant-man - would be good (and I imagine we might get in a year or so).  Hyperion or Sentry would be fun for the Superman rip offs.  Mr. Fantastic done right - which would be very hard - would be fun to watch.  Forge - with a varied arsenal, could be interesting.  Never going to happen, but I have a soft spot for Justice from the New Universe era.  Howard the Duck.  Dazzler, but only if she was loaded down with early 80s references and had roller skates.  Sasquatch.  

Mr Fantastic will be out in a couple months and I want to say Dazzler is on the list, but not soon.

If not, then the pace is right where we should expect of all game companies for what's being added. Animations, models and effects that have a pretty damn long history to have been drawn from. Everything else is numbers.

Devil Dinosaur was one of the most ill conceived creations of Jack Kirby. Set on an alternate Earth where dinosaurs never went extinct and co-evolved along side monkey people. Devil Dinosaur was an intelligent red T-Rex looking dinosaur who for some reason let some monkey man named Moon Child ride around on his head while together they accomplished a whole lot of nothing. Maybe they fought dinosaur crime or some shit. Anyway, they eventually made it to the regular Marvel universe's Savage Lands. Once here they accomplished a lore of fuck all nothing until Moon Child was taken prisoner by SHIELD because why the fuck not, he's a monkey man so he's guilty of something. This makes Devil Dinosaur sad so the Savage Land dinosaurs band together declare war on SHIELD and attack the rest of the earth. Some shit that's stupid even by Marvel standards happens and Moon Child gets back to the Savage Land where he and Devil Dinosaur trample plants or whatever all day in happiness.

Then Nextwave uses the character and finally gives him the ability to speak. At this point he's become a criminal mastermind who's gone insane with hatred for humans and monkey because all they want to do is ride around on his head all day and lie to him. He's also started wearing a smoking jacket, crevat, a glass of wine, and some sort of revolver.

The reason I really want to see him in this game is despite being large enough to just eat people whole or trample crowds to death he'd shoot them with his pistol instead and then monologue them to death.

X-23 will be an insta-buy for me but that's about it. I'm not a comics nerd at all so she, Gambit, and Scarlet Witch are the only characters I'm interested in from a game like this, lore-wise.

It's piqued enough interest in the Marvel universe to get me to cough up for a month or two of Marvel Unlimited, though. So it's a success for the brand that way.

Well, they did just release their first raid. That's been a long time coming since it's a whole new system, so we've yet to see whether they can pump out that sort of content on a schedule.

They added their first raid and what they call a one-shot, a kind of single player dungeon/challenge thing. They have more one-shots in the pipe and another 'midtown' style zone on the way. They also use their existing content in new ways just to give people more shit to do.

A lot of their work is just numbers, but its still on a pace that I've yet to see any other mmo'ish company match. When they say "we are doing a class overhaul on X" they actually do it, not in some nebulous 6-12 month future. Like in a 'we started on X' few weeks pass 'here's X's new stuff!' then release. They're not pretending to analyze data sets like their working on the fucking large hadron collider, they basically do the obvious whenever it's well, obvious.

They already released Loki and Taskmaster and that new hero pack includes Magneto Venom and Juggernaut.  They are having some in game lore reason for why the villains are helping the heroes, i knew what it was but i forgot.  I think it had something to do with Surtur.

All of those have been 'antiheroes' at some point, not just straight up villains.

The Cube thing broke into tiny shards and splinters and is causing pocket realities to spill over everywhere. It's also why you can have spiderman teamed up with spiderman.

This. Venom has been, for want of a better word, a 'good guy' several times, and that doesn't even include being a member of Thunderbolts. So Venom gets to play Marvel Heroes. Carnage, on the otherhand, is 100% asshole, so won't likely ever become playable. Likewise Bullseye and a whole host of other terminally evil characters.

Cloak and Dagger I would *love* to see become playable, but I'd want them to be a double-act. I have no idea how it would work - I guess like a normal hero with a team-up companion, but a toggle that would let you switch between either to control them? I'd also love to see Molly in game. They'd probably go for Future/Brotherhood Molly rather than Princess Powerful Molly, but still. PUNCH ALL THE THINGS.

Doing a winmerge on the test server vs the game server it looks like Mr. Fantastic is the surprise hero for the end of the week. All his files got loaded tonight. Also something about a hellcarrier invasion....And lizardbears.

That wouldn't be a surprise though, they been open about the schedule for him.  If there is a surprise it would be x-23 who's been someone's side project and nearly done for months.

Well loki, magneto and venom at least have been heroes or at least worked with the good guys often enough in the comics. Heck just look at the last thor movie that is pretty common sometimes he works with the good guys sometimes he works against them other times he does both at the same time. Heck magneto was helped run the xmen for a time he is not so much a villian as somebody who is very much for protecting all mutants and will do whatever necessary to do it. If that means working with good guys he will do it if it means twirling his mustache and throwing stadiums at people he does it.

Dun care about Mags, but I'm buying Doom as soon as he pops.

So how do you guys keep yourselves interested in the game?  Now that I've done story mode to completion I'm finding grinding levels on legendary quests and patrols tiresome.  I'm only level 45 now that it's 2 weeks after I beat Doom and I find I just don't care enough to login anymore.

I play till I get bored and do something else. I'll stop playing for weeks or months at a time even, it's not like I have a sub going or anything. I can play for five minutes or five hours.

Lately I've been playing while listening to various podcasts, neither requiring my total attention.

I've bogged down quite a bit. I have limited times for games and the only reason I seem to log in is to see the new chars!cater graphics in action. It was become more about seeing the game than playing it...

I wish there was more content, but what keeps me playing is that now I have a bunch of characters I can play and they all feel different. Some days I feel like I have to learn how to play the character all over again.

Altitis.  I love leveling new heroes and it's all i do.  I did try to gear one up completely so i had at least one good hero though.

Yeah, I just keep alting. Get someone to 60 for the xp boost then switch to a new character pretty much immediately. This is far and away the most alt friendly game I've ever played just because so many things are account bound, and with the synergy system, even if you want to rabidly min/max one character, you want 10 synergies.

And what other people said. I lose interest for a couple of weeks then notice it in my steam list and go "Oh right, that. Let's go see what they've added recently". Since they added the omega system I try to at least get my dailies out of the way, but I'm sure eventually that will feel like a slog.

Cyclops to 60 is the best thing you can do to help level other characters.

Unbinding legendaries is super cheap, but you have to re-level them.

Why do people keep mentioning getting cyclops to 50?  Does he farm particularly well or something?

I started with Rocket.  He's OK.  Single target and he seems to be impossible to kill. Seems to kill rather slow, however. Tried Scarlet Witch. She's OK but seems squishy. 

I have Invisible Woman, Storm, Taskmaster, Daredevil and Hulk.  Any suggestions on which one is particularly fun to play?

The second synergy for Cyclops (which becomes active at 50) is +10% experience.  Up to 10 synergies can be selected for each hero so once Cyclops is at 50, every other hero that selects his synergy will get +10% experience.

All of those are way more fun and far superior to rocket, Taskmaster and Daredevil specially.  Team ups are basically pets or passive stat boosts, they are helpful while leveling and a buncha stats at end game.  You can use the same team up for every single character so at least one is definitely worth purchasing, i recommend Firestar or Magik.

Magik is probably the most universally useful. Her passives are just raw damage rating and health on hit. Her actives are demon summons and I think a heal?



I use Spider-man because Spider man!

Firestar has reduced spirit cost for abilities, which is pretty universally good also.

You can do that! What happens is you get the clone Spider-man dude to show up, Scarlet Spider? I forget his name.

A team up is definitely worth it. Among the benefits already mentioned a team up has additional inventory slots that you can stick your stuff in*. Magik in particular is pretty tanky through the early levels (all the team ups die quickly at the high levels unless you micro their position) and a good pairing for squishy heroes. I used her in permanent active mode with Storm for most of my leveling with her. They all have their own dialog which can be amusing if you enjoy that aspect of the game.

* tip 1: hold down the CTRL key to move stuff in and out; tip2: if you have any Med Kits in your team up inventory your team up hero will use them for him or herself and those kits are still available for your usage too; tip3: there's a UI setting that will show your team up's health bar

Yes Rocket's DPS is not among the highest. He's probably the best "pet"/"summon" hero, though, if you like that sort of thing. Drop a bunch of turrets and run around collecting all the loot while Groot and the turrets do all the work. There's talk that Rocket's rework will make his "shooty" abilities better, or least more varied.

Haven't played Taskmaster or Hulk yet.

Hulk isn't very popular and is probably 2nd behind Thing as the least popular of the Tanky heroes (though none of the tanky heroes are particularly popular).

Storm was my first 60. She's easy mode with Magik tanking for her up till about 50 when Magik can't tank as well anymore. Also kind of boring to play pre-rework (which I haven't tried yet). Only a handful of abilities were very good and she has the least active abilities on my hotbar. Hopefully her rework gave her more viable builds.

Daredevil is a decent single-target melee-type (AoE not so good). He's harder to play well, though, than some of the other melee heroes cause of his combo point system.

Invisible Woman I've only played a bit so far but she's pretty fun. Unfortunately she has some of the worst dialog in the game.

Black Panther, Moon Knight and Nightcrawler belong on the top tier with Strange and Human Torch, Loki isn't THAT great.  Thing Hulk and Luke Cage should be way higher, Ghost Rider should be near the bottom along with Hawkeye.  Daredevil is easily top ten.  Yeah, the whole thing is a mess based i believe on nothing but forum polls.

I have to not play Nightcrawler too much because he ruins all the other heroes.  So friggin' fun and deadly.

I have two team ups magik and just got beta ray bill for rocket to buddy with yesterday. They are awesome for leveling up at max level it depends a bit as the survivability vs some of the cosmic stuff is not super great at least for the more melee ones. That said you can spec them to either ben a all the time pet, a some time pet but more powerful or a passive buff and not even have them directly deployed. In the latter they will from time to time swoop in and do an attack or something and then go away.

I would recommend at least getting one team up. All your heros can use it and the passive buffs to your character alone justifies their use and they make leveling alts SO much more fun as that kind of stuff they rock at.

also for the person leveling rocket his level 52 rework is next at bat so he is going to get some loving in the next month or so.  Until then he may not rock the damage meters but between groot and his suppression turrets and the BFG he is a really solid cosmic runner. He may not blow the roof off the damage charts but he also is one of the safest heroes as NPC simply LOATH his turrets and groot throw a team up in there and I can sit and shoot the flark out of cosmic dungeons without anything even glancing at me.

FYI, you can use the team-up inventory even if you don't own any team-ups.


I would say Squirrel Girl is the best summoner.  Her squirrels are all mobile, she can have up to 30 of them out and each squirrel bite heals her, making her nigh unkillable.  Plus some squirrels have rockets strapped to them!  :grin:

No, Thing is pretty much where he belongs sadly. That is a character in desperate need of his 52 review. He's like all the leftover bits from when they built Colossus and Hulk.

SG is probably the queen of summoners at the moment. Rockets summoners really don't benefit from some of the stuff much like pet health because they are already so darn tanky that I almost never lose groot to him dying just timing out  now and then. That said if you think you will like SG rocket has some awesome synergies for her to use.

The spreadsheet is pretty bad. The grades are based off of a single build the player enjoys (not always the most effective build). Then there are weird stats like a fun factor and things like travel/movement (which is pretty key for survivability for some chars) is in the same category as fun factor and char design.  :uhrr:

Though, I'm with Fordel. The Thing (and tanks in general imo) belong on the bottom. There is one thing to worry about here - do the most damage you can with just enough survivability to live, this is where tanks fall flat compared to others.

Yes, some melee chars should be a bit higher but overall they are a bit tougher to play which I could understand knocking them off a few ranks in the overall listings. They really should split these up with range, melee, and shitty tank categories. Basically, AE farming for mass loot, melee/single target for boss rushing, and those you shouldn't bother with :why_so_serious:

Yeah he's definitely the most fun of the heroes I've played so far. They did a really good job with his teleportation powers.

It's why Ms Marvel is such a strong character, her baseline survivability is so high you can gear for full DPS and still be virtually immortal. If you don't care about speed running though, you can build for tank, still clear trash nearly as well, then facetank cosmic kurse  :why_so_serious:

I haven't played her, but that is what I hear about her normally - she's basically a higher dps Jean. Jean of course is 1) turn on Phoenix form/aura/inferno 2) smash hotkeys to kill things slowly with no possibility of death or running out of resources.

Ms Marvel is an actual tank, like Thing/Colossus etc, she has a taunt and the tank damage reduction buff and generates resources while being pounded on. Unlike the other tanks though, she has a crazy amount of mobility (only the teleporters have more) and ranged AE, on top of the usual heavy hitting single target stuff the other tanks have. So you can build as ranged DPS, melee DPS or a Hybrid of the two, with as little or much tank as you want.

I play her as pretty much full tank and I stroll through cosmics the way my other characters walk through the greens.

TaskMaster is super fun to level up - at least so far. Mine is at 25.

He does a hilarious amount of damage, despite being mid-tier in the google doc. I think he tails off as he gets closer to max level, but it's an enjoyable trip to 25 at the very least.

This. Nightcrawler's on target to be my first 60. He's easily the most fun I've had with a skillset in an ARPG. He's squishy, but only if you forget yourself - the survivability based on his stealthing is unbelievable, and if you're specced like me through the teleport tree, bamfing in and out of combat and dropping Brimstone patches means you're continually doing damage even while disengaged from combat.

Also, his Ultimate pretty much one-shot kills Red Terminal bosses, and that's without upgrades.


I bought Ms. Marvel this weekend to take advantage of the BOGOF as she's long been a favourite character of mine and everyone who has played her seems to rave about the experience, and so far, even under 20, I know she was a good investment. Sadly, her random box companion was Hulk, who most everybody dislikes and a character I can't see myself playing anytime soon.

I've only been playing a few weeks now (Nevermore convinced me to give it a go) but it's engaged me way beyond my expectations.
My roster so far (in order of obtainage): Hawkeye (33), Black Widow (20), Nightcrawler (54), Taskmaster, Wolverine, Luke Cage, Ms. Marvel (18), Hulk.

Saving up the ES to buy Squirrel Girl specifically next, then back to random boxes methinks.

Thanks for the offer either way, and apparently they extended the hot dog event through 4th of july weekend and the football event through the rest of the world cup anyways.  I did not realize how cheap legendaries were to unbind, i thought it would cost unstable molecules or the unbinding consumable.  Time to recycle all those pots of gold.

I keep mid/low tier artifacts because i have way too many heroes and not enough good artis for all of them.  Anything with a "visual" tag on it gets used on a default costume as soon as i get them.

She's so damn adorable, and not bad to play either.  I got Tippy Toe recently, so I feel she is complete.

Ms. Marvel is fun, too.  She's probably my favorite behind Kurt and SG.

I'll be the dissident. I did the first mission on Nightcrawler (he was a bogo) and really disliked it. Way too fiddly and twitchy. Does it get any better or is it always that way?

You can play him a bit more zen-like by favoring certain power over others, however he is very squishy so even with his stealth you still need to move around quite a bit to stay live.

I stopped thinking of him as a fixed point and more a like the probability field of an electron by spamming his Jump Between Five Dudes power.  Approaching it like that made it a lot easier to play him.

(Now I use that for mooks while I use his dive attack and Bamf Bomb for single-target.  I also use his base teleport to 'fix' him in space and time.)

He takes a little getting used to because he is so fast, but once you've got the hang of him... he'll pretty much ruin you for other heroes. His positioning is unbeatable, his damge utility is great and he's fantastic at both single-target and AE. I recommend concentrating on Rapid Teleporter tree for levelling, most of the L60 builds I see divert heavily into powers from the other two trees but the middle works well for me right now.

You want to basically pour your points into Teleport (you'll be BAMFing all the time so you want more BAMF for your buck, spirit-wise), Blink Strike (this is what seems twitchy early on, but it's pretty great in crowded fights), Brimstone Beatdown (you will use this on everything that isn't a trash-mob) which is a hold-down power that does 40% more damage to elites and bosses, and Infernal Brimstone (which you will use constantly), leaving large area patches of lethal purple brimstone that last for 5 seconds and murder trashmobs horribly. There are a couple of passives you can big up, a couple of stances (I use Heartseeker) and the signature attack, Righteous Frenzy is ok - good for spamming for big spike damage but the cooldown is annoying. The Ultimate is pure paisley purple joy. Oh, and you'll want to take Shadowmeld for stealthing. NC is not a face-tanker when his Ultimate is down. Run and gun bosses - BAMF in, lay some smack down, drop Infernal Brimstones, Stealth, BAMF away and lick your wounds. So long as you keep Stealth up, you'll regen HP and nothing will find you, and the mobs will still be taking damage from the Brimstone fields. Winning without even trying.

A note on power levels - they rebalance them so often I would not factor them into my decision making process at all.  A drastically underpowered character might be the most powerful in a month, and the top of the charts today could be middle of the pack in 2 months.  I'd focus on whether you enjoy the mechanics and the peripherals.

Ok, my first grumble...

100,000 credits and 3 pure elements to unbind a stack of Relics. Doesn't say per/relic, just 'stack'. So I'm supposed to pay 100,000 credits and 3 pure elements to unbind 27 Lemuria Relics that seem to be somehow bound to Hawkeye when he only uses Xandar? HELL no. It doesn't even matter if I can afford it, the sheer stupidity of that blanket cost is baffling.

I'm not really clear on what you're complaining about here. You wish it *wasn't* a blanket cost? Or you just think the price is too high? It pretty much takes me conscious effort to not cap out on money while I play. I've started chain rerolling legendaries that don't fit with one of the daily quest requirements just to spend it, so it's sort of baffling to see someone complain about money.

For a newer player it's pretty expensive.  Once you get a 60 and you're bumping the credit cap and wading past all the pure elements to get to the good drops, things get a different perspective.

Kind of like how the lack of retcons when you first start makes things much tougher on a new player than it needs to be, when they're just learning the game but there isn't an obvious easy way to try out different powers and combinations.

It didn't help anything that Retcons were broken and not dropping for a few months. They seem to be back now though at least.

Yeah, I wish it wasn't a blanket cost. Considering you can stack Relics up to 1000, for there to be a blanket cost to unstack any number of relics between 2 and 999 is mindboggling. And yeah, as a new player, 100k is a lot of credits that I could be using on rerolls or affixes that will generally net me more stat growth than unbinding 27 relics for 1/3 the cost. It's not a big thing, like I said. Just a grumble. I know the 3mill credit limit will inevitably hit me at some point, but I have my principles, shallow as they are. So I'm simply going to start recollecting Lemurias. Maybe use those bound ones as Crafter currency. Now is that hubris or irony?

Her one PBAE with projectile reflection, its just obscene once you have attack speed. Hold down button, 100% projectile reflection. That just breaks some encounters.

Game has been buggy as shit this weekend.  Still having fun though.

Yea, it's not been great in Mid Town or the Holo-Sim. Mid Town mob spawns just stop working after awhile it seems and the Holo-Sim has a broken wave (AIM Surgical Arms) that just stops all  progress. Only option is exit or failure.

I had the Dinosaur jungle kind of half-load on me.  That was weird.   There were giant blank spots where terrain and parts of the map should have been.

Switched from Rocket to Scarlet Witch.  Got here up to 26 pretty effortlessly.  Tons of AE and shit just falls over.  She's pretty damn squishy, but rewind reality makes most boss encounters pretty doable, even if you mess up once or twice.  I hear once you get her level 30 AE, she turns into somewhat of a one button wonder. 

Finally got up to 175 eternity splinters.  My random champ was finally not a duplicate (had bad luck with my BOGOs): Cyclops.  Not super psyched on that one.

Cyclops is horrible and really needs his review, good news is it should be coming soon.  I believe he is scheduled next after rocket raccoon, which is the next one up.

Cyclops is kind of boring, but he seemingly does a ton of damage.

I got him to 50 over the weekend, hopefully 60 before the end of the week. The 10% bonus exp thing from him on top of the 30% for being 60 is a pretty good inspiration.

Don't put any points into much until you get the bouncing laser basic attack. Then stack items that give bonus levels to that skills. It does truckloads of damage.

Also his toggle that gives DR and knockdown, max a single target ability for bosses, max all his passives.  That's all there is to it really, he is not bad because he has trouble with the content he is bad because he has one single good attack ability.

It is not that he is not reasonably strong he is just a really boring one trick pony and the one trick is pretty much his darn auto attack. So just hold the button down until you wished he would melt your eyes with his laser beams.

Yeah, the game is actually very easy, you can't not do good with practically any hero you pick, there is no "inferno" or "torment" difficulties.  Some are just so much more fun while you are kicking ass than others.

I have been messing around with moonknight. He is a very interesting character as he gets stronger as you have lower and lower health and gets tankier as he gets lower health. I tend to get squished with him a bit more than other characters because it is so tempting to ride the danger zone for super damage and wind up face planting due to it. He also has a wacky power that basically sets you at 1 hp but invuln for a short time which allows for some stupidly high burst damage.

Only problem is that power seems to have a tiny window between it reducing you to 1 hp before your invuln kicks in and its really easy to randomly just die when turning it on if there are dots on the ground.

My kid and his cousin have been crazy over this game for like two weeks now and oh my god Wolverine is like twenty bucks or some shit.

The Heroes you can get for shards if you are willing to wait a bit and save em, the costumes are super duper rare drops that I've never actually seen myself.

I've already spent $10, which is more than I usually spend on a FTP title.  I'll spend $10-15 or more once there's a BOGO or other promotion running again.  I don't think I can be patient enough to save enough shards for a teamup.  Do shards drop more at high difficulty or or doing higher level content?  175 took a while, even with 100 for a mission and 25 I got out of a free card.

Shards are tied to Special item find, and there's a guarantee you'll get one shard every like 5-6 mins or something. Having a decent SiF rate will increase their drop rate and their drop size, getting double/triple drops and rarely a 10 drop.


You can also put 3 costumes into the crafter to get a random costume, but that's just like a crap shoot. You get a default costume for prestige'ing a hero as well, but that's for crazy people.

Eternity Splinters drop pretty often even if you're not using a boost (Special Item Find or 'SIF'), they're supposedly on a base 8 minute timer. They accrue a lot quicker than you realise and when you consider that characters and costumes are the life-blood of the game. That they give you a garuanteed means of getting characters without spending a dime is pretty amazing; since I started playing a few weeks ago I've already earned 4 random heroes through ES collection and I'm saving up 400 now to specifically buy Squirrel Girl. It's a waiting game, but when you're having fun AND earning things to buy characters you'd otherwise spend money on, the wait's not bad at all.

From all the reports the effect SiF has on splinter drops is completely insignificant, you will get them at the same rate with or without boosts.  Well there is the splinter drop boost, but if you are going to buy that you might as well just spend the money on actual heroes.

Patrol zones have had the most luck for splinter drops, personally.  You're constantly fighting while waiting on the next 2 min boss spawn so it goes by quick.

It sounds bad but keeping an eye on forums a couple times a day and keeping eyes open for the free code things has gotten me unlocks of about half the heroes in the game. The only thing I spend cash on was two inventory increases and the psylocke preorder cause well I needed psyloke hehe.

Patrol zones like midtown madness or xdefense are good for splinter hunting. Just constant non stop fighting and in x defense you are getting tags of everything from other players too so spinters spit out pretty fast and furious.


They seem like they come in so slow but I have done 4 random hero box unlocks with splinters so far combined with the random hero redeem keys stuff unlocks way faster than it looks like it will when you first start it.

I'm glad you have decided to accept Khonshu as your personal lord and savior.  Moon Knight is my favorite by far, gruesome frenzy has to be the best ability in the game and once you gear up his can clear mooks pretty well with his shitty aoe.

I've been playing for six or seven weeks. I spent 375 splinters and I'm sitting on over 600 with nothing really to spend them on. Once you get the few heroes you really want and a team up, there's not a whole lot to spend them on.

Ult upgrade tokens! Not to mention there is a new hero at least once a month.

Scarlett Witch gets kinda hilarious once you get her lvl 30 "spin to win" power.  Now I probably need to rebuild her, because a lot of stuff doesn't make sense once you get this puppy.

blasphemy! My first randomed heroes were Cage and Thing (I was hoping for Ms. Marvel or Loki). Both of them were tons more fun than I thought they would be. I have to agree though that there are some that are just way more fun than others.

Yah, she's pretty fun to play (and strong right out of the gates), but holy shit is she a massive dork.  Scarlet Witch is pretty bad too in that regard, but Invisible Woman just surpasses her corniness and rah-rah-rah bullshit by miles.

His aoe clear is kinda crappy but he sure can punch the ever living fuck out of single targets. Between his cestus punch and his signature barrage of whoopass he just rips bosses up. Still only like 37 with him but his bouncing baton move is getting potent enough to at least be useful amounts of minion moshing. 

Yeah, i just switched my legendary from savage axe to M'kraan crystal and the dps drop while leveling it up is noticeable while AE clearing.  Single target dps is more important than aoe clearing speed imo though.

In addition to the boosted exp/rif/sif, they changed the color of costume cores from purple to blue (crafting material color), pieces effected by SIF are now pink (relic color) which are things like eternity shards and special event items, and ARMOR research drives are back

Rerolling quests is going to drain your money quick, the only one that truly isn't worth it is dooms.

I really have no clue. I'm going to bed now but I know I was 45 when I logged in and I'm still 45 now that I've logged out, still needing a bar of xp.

I may be overestimating how long I played strange at 45 before this, but I spent at least 35 mins just now, because I ground out three Magneto Spawns, one Doop, one Hood, and a Doc Ock/ Electro in Midtown.  I think that included three leg. quests but it might have only been two and the other I'm remembering was on Emma. (6 Supervillans, 45? giant-types and 18 Bosses)

That's mind boggling since I just got 2+ levels doing a single Man-Ape in a duo a little while ago.  (35 to 38, but I was about three quarters of the way to 36 already)

Well i am also up to 125% exp bonus from leveled heroes, but it still should not make that big of a difference.

How does that work?

Your first level 60 gets you an account wide 30% exp bonus, second one 20%, third 15%, fourth 10%, then 5% for each one up to 200%.  Also every level 30 is 1% and 50 3%.  This game was made for altitis.

Then add in omega points and cyclops synergy and people level 1-60 in a couple hours. One of my guildies is prestiging Mr Fantastic already, he just came out today

Jesus.  I need to get someone to 60 then, and get cyclops since I'm only 20 shards from him.

But yeah, apparently it does make a huge difference. My time playing last night between my two posts was what, a little over two hours?  I started off running Captain America up the ladder from level 6 and got to level 12 before getting bored and deciding to try Emma Frost who I'd gotten as a freebie.  Took her from one to nine before I decided I should use the boost to grind the good Doctor.

 Since we determined I was on him 35 mins or so earlier, compare that to your amazing one to fifty something in less time.  I got a total of fifteen, almost sixteen levels in the time you got fifty something.  Crazy town.

Took me about three hours to go from 54 to 60 chasing LQs with Black Panther/Shuri. I even did Doom. The ones I avoid are mostly the search the map for treasure rooms ones.

Iron Man is awesome!  So many missiles.

Also, double xp means I might actually finish leveling Cyclops for the xp bonus.

He's 28, but so far my experience with Iron Man is he's squishy as hell with anemic damage. Is there a level where that turns around? BP felt like that for 20, but then blossomed into a death machine.

Ugh Punisher is a chore to level, stupid awesome synergy.

Out of all the heroes I have now, Punisher is by far the least fun.

Ok, the answer is apparently level 42, at which point Tissue Paper Man becomes Iron Man and begins to rampage through everything.

Iron Man is probably my most disappointing Hero.  I expect to be able to play him as a blaster champ (I read the comics in the mid-late 70s, I don't even remember him having missiles).  Building him that way is very disappointing.  I find the one-off to be a huge letdown - once every 25-ish seconds I push the button and everything nearby falls down.

I'm thinking I can build him into something more engaging to play if I go coolant blast and take all the melee powers, but not have blasters doesn't feel like Iron Man to me.  I shelved him till they take another pass.  Given how most people like the missiles, I'm probably just never going to like what they do with this Hero.

Agree, Photonics Ms M almost exactly like I would expect Iron Man to play.  She is a lot of fun (got her to 60).

I like her punchy myself.

I guess it depends on whether you consider her movement powers part of her punchy tool set. I find I lean on Crashdown strike and Photonic wave for group clearing and use Cosmic Haymaker for bosses in between dot/debuff refreshing.

The other stuff in her Brawling tree is sorta, eeehhhh whatever. The passive's are really good, but the actives are kinda just there for me.

Got to 60 finally.  Even chaining xp boots & legendary quests it took me nearly all of today to go from 52 to 60. (with a few several-hour breaks)  That's a hell of a grind. Actually dropped $10 so I could buy the penta exp boots to push through from 58 to 60.

Cyclops is up next to 50 because, fuuuuuck doing that again without some additional XP.

I am not insinuating anything about you or calling you out or anything, but there has to be something wrong with your grind plan, because since yesterday morning, I have taken Iron Man from 34 to 60, Cyclops from 1 to 54, Human torch from 1 to 60, Squirrel Girl from 16 to 56, Storm from 1 to 51, and Silver Surfer from 1 to 39. I ran out of exp potions to stack yesterday afternoon.

Edit: I forgot, Colossus from 45 to 60 also. I also took healthy breaks, played with the kid, watched a couple of movies with the wife. That sort of stuff.

Eh, I only managed to bring Scarlet Witch to 50.  But then, I had no exp potions, no level 60, and played like 5 hours.  I think I put some levels on cyclops at well, but holy shit is he boring.

It's been mentioned in this thread before, but legendary quests are the way to go - mostly because of the reward, but also because they put you in places where enemies are "green".  Fastest I've found is to just camp in Midtown and re-roll your legendary (odin's) quests.  This will deplete your cash in fast order.  Doing the story is the slowest way to level.  Given Merusk's leveling rate, I'm guessing that he's doing the story?

Question about the legendary quests, do you clear the whole thing or just run to the objectives when grinding?

Finishing the quest as fast as possible is the best way to get exp, most of it comes from the big orange orbs at the end.  Plus you want those 300 odin marks for a legendary.

Nope, doing exactly what you just described. I'd get a quest like "Kill 20 giant types" or "50 paramilitary" and roll with it in Midtown, then reroll until I got another Midtown quest.  In fact I went broke around 8pm last night from rerolling quests.  The bonuses from additional level 60s are just that good, it would seem.

Cyclops is flying through the levels, hitting 12 via story-mode after the Raft and a brief midtown session, which seems to confirm just that. 
 - I'm in story mode because I need the waypoints and since you don't get quests until 20 I may as well do it that way.

Ah, that might be the problem.  Rerolling for midtown quests works great when you are in a group since everyone's kills count towards everyone's quest goals, but by yourself they are fairly slow and reward the least amount of exp.  If you are over level 10 on cyclops use his ricochet basic, it makes short work of most things.  Edit: as far as LQ's go the ones that give the best bang for the buck are terminal quests, they are very short and reward a good amount of exp.  Except Doom, skip the royal fuck out of that.  A nice trick i just learned this weekend is to do almost everything on a green terminal and finish the quest on a red one for more total exp.  Midtown LQs can be time consuming and reward the least amount of exp, some are fairly easy and usually worth it like paramilitary which counts almost all spawns and sorcerers/demons which counts ninjas who spawn all over the place.  Open world/story LQs usually take the longest, specially if you don't know your way around, anything involving waiting for events or an open world boss is going to take forever and are best skipped, looking for treasure rooms is usually a pain also.  Story quests with good rewards are worth doing at least once on every difficulty though (Hood and Kingpin give a power point, Taskmaster gives a rarity boost potion, Shield power station in chapter 7 is a power point, sinister gives an exp boost).

Seems to me that after the empty midtowns, whatever changes they've made spawn things a lot faster. I an't remember getting any of those "where the fuck are the whatevers" since then.

Some of the Midtown legendaries can be slow because the thing you will need, like lava-men, will inevitably not be spawning and you'll need to clear out spawn points multiple times before they appear.

As for story mode waypoints they are not worth unlocking by playing through the story unless you are already doing a legendary in a story area in which case the startiing waypoint will be automatically unlocked for you and you are near another waypoint while completing the legendary. The story waypoints are locked per difficulty so even if you bothered to unlock, say, all the Normal mode story waypoints they will be locked when you hit Heroic and again when you hit Superheroic.

Hub waypoints can be unlocked more easily by getting one hero to each of them and then switching to all your other characters that need that waypoint while at that hub.

I am finding this way more interesting than I really should. 2.0 D3 didn't hook me this hard.

Anyway, is there a good place to read all about the various things, legendaries, Omega points, crafting, etc.? The people on the forums seem to like writing a whole lot of words assuming you already know things. Additionally, lots of stuff appears to be out of date. For example, i just unlocked Scarlet Witch, a recent thread asking for a leveling build recommended another first page post that has out of date information in it. I was also looking for information about a particular LQ and all of the references I found talked about another apparently earlier version of the quest.

Speaking of questions are some of the maps randomized? That LQ was in Lowtown and I had to find two treasure rooms. I could not find the second one so I googled a map, I had little luck and the one I eventually found looked very little like and did not have a door where I thought one should be.

Yes the maps are randomized.  That's why the "find treasure rooms" LQs are a pain, lowtown specially is a maze.  If you have any general questions i will gladly answer, as far as character specific stuff goes i can only help with the ones i've played (not scarlet witch).  I got most of my info from the something awful thread on the game.

Omega points are brand new and still in 'beta' so they change around a lot every other patch.

So far i mostly stick my points in "guilt suppression research" under the neural tab (punisher icon).  Spirit on kill and brutal rating are great on every single char.

Are retcon devices only available for real money and as a very rare drop? This is the only thing I find fairly annoying. Both of the characters I've played so far, Storm and Daredevil, seem to work best at 60 with mostly late talents. I imagine Storm works well with any points, but she works gloriously with the cookie cutter. But she was my first character so I had one free. With Daredevil I knew more going in so I could see how he's a bit more fiddly, so I just waited to spend points this weekend. But that was more than a little tedious and I can't imagine that working for normal non-boosted leveling.

Killing bullseye (chapter 4, upper east side) in the story quest gets you a retcon device once per difficulty.  They were also dropping fairly regularly while drops were boosted last weekend, they do drop from mobs but normally it is rare.  Not "never see one" rare like costumes, but maybe once a week rare.  You can also get them from the fortune cards you buy with cube shards (only use cube shards on fortune cards). I have more retcon devices than i know what to do with and i use them fairly regularly, 3 guaranteed per char + random drops + fortune cards gets you enough that you never really have to buy them.

Since I really like the enemy radar thing for the mini map, I've been getting the SHIELD tree Omega skill that gives it to you on any character that doesn't already have it as a skill.  That way I don't have to use otherwise crappy artifacts to get it.

They've started dropping again as a very rare drop.

Yeah, 65 splinters, but that would just be a complete waste.  Hell thats more than a third of a random hero and a new hero gets you three more from the story anyways.

I leveled punisher all the way to 60 during the 250% exp bonus and i'll be damned if i know what his ult even does.  It's the least flashy ult of all the chars i've played.

A few hours maybe, once I returned?  I wasn't really paying attention.  I think I went through two one hour triple boosts that day and just did legendaries.  I never rerolled though.  If a quest took me to a terminal or the open world, I went there and did it.

Any newbie tips?  I remember trying this a long time ago but it didn't hook me.  Tried it again the other day, after finding out my old account had been wiped, and I'm having some fun with it.  However, I pretty much have no idea what i am doing out of the questing/combat stuff.

I'd play through the story one time on Normal difficulty and then do legendary quests mixed in with whatever challenges you enjoy (Midtown Madness, X-Defense, Holo-Sim) until you hit 60 or get tired of playing that hero and what to try somebody else.

Don't sell anything, donate everything to your crafter until he is at least level 10.  I'd actually level the crafter up to max before anything else, then start on the enchanter.  The weapon and armor vendors are not important.  Never donate any uniques, you can trade repeats of any level for other uniques once you level your crafter enough.

Another newbie tip: turning your graphics up higher increases performance.  Yeah, not kidding on that one.

FWIW, did not work for me, but I already have them pretty high. New card sitting next to the PC though. Is that the definition of old? Letting a new card sit around for a week because it's too much work to install it?

That is just a travesty.

Thanks for the info.  Hmm wish I knew about the unique items earlier.  I've sold a few lower level ones.  I'm assuming you mean the cosmic items.  Also I've been leveling up the gear and weapon vendor :O

Uniques are brown, cosmics are yellow. AFAIK cosmics are just vendor bait if you can't use them.

Ok then, I don't think I've ran into a unique yet then.  I'm only level 25 so far. 

You'll know when you get a unique because they actually say 'Unique' on them.  :wink:

I've been really lucky with uniques lately. My Daredevil just swapped uniques. He got the clubs at in the mid 20s then again in the mid 40s. Same with another piece. My Scarlet Witch just got three in the space of a night too.

That one about changing gear from the roster is great.

In my defense, I had put the card in over the weekend, but the bios didn't support it and I didn't have a flash drive handy to update the bios.

- For a starting char, I'd strongly suggest Human Torch or Storm as they have better AE and will level faster which will then grant you a +30% xp bonus on your next char
- Go to your crafter on the costume tab and add affixes to your costume. It's easier to get higher rolls at lower levels (before any core is added) and the stats will scale to the level of the core you put in. Affixes can be added at level 1
- Don't worry about keeping low level crafting mats. I've found that just keeping 10 of each rank 8 crafting mat is more than you'll ever need at one time (unless you have really bad luck trying to min/max costume affixes).
- At level 25, grab an Uru-forged item (most likely the armor for +400 defense) and add Brigand's Fortune to it at the Enchanter. This grants +7% rif/sif/run speed/attack speed/+70 xp per kill, and probably some other stuff I'm not remembering. If you need this stuff, you can probably ask someone for the mats as the runes and uru-forged items are tradeable
- Don't listen to the newbie tips video where it says to trade uniques for items to level the crafter. Use them to trade for other uniques as someone else said here. Crafters will level and you'll be at max credits (3 million) before too long and it's just not worth trading them in. If nothing else, use the next event that drops special items that can be traded at the special event vendor to powerlevel a vendor as they sell for a ton.

I started as Rocket, I'm around level 26 atm.  I just got his BFG and things die fast. 

All the comments over the last few months did little to prepare me for exactly how terrible Cyclops is in every way. Seriously, how did this not go directly to the top of the rework pile. One attack with crappy damage and some passives?

I don't get the cyclops hate.  I destroy stuff with him.

Every character destroys things, I've heard this game referred to as "babby's first ARPG".  The problem with Cyclops is that he's got one good attack and two completely useless trees. "Punchclops" shouldn't be a thing.

Yeah, the melee line makes no sense to me, but the leadership passives are nice. I notice a decent change in durability if a Cyclops is around on another character.

Yeah, they are fine passives, but its still not a well made talent tree.  You can't make a "leadership" cyclops, you can make an effective eye shooty cyclops and a jokey punchclops.  Granted i understand it must be difficult to design three different talent trees around a guy who does one thing.

Finally got my first 60: Scarlet Witch.  So, what do you do at level cap, specifically to get some better gear?   

Probably going to level up Cyclops or another random hero up some.  Need about 100 extra Odin Marks to get a legendary for Wanda.

X-def, cosmic runs.  The more realistic and easiest option is probably "wait for the next monty haul event", which seem to happen every single weekend now.

It would be simple.... A whiny moping tree about Jean, a eye beam tree, and the leadership tree.

Does the story get you to level cap?

Nope, I finished it at around level 32.  But you can also do it on heroic and super heroic if you want.  I didn't. 

If you skip the other two story modes completely, you miss out on 250 health, 40 spirit, 8 power points and a couple of retcon devices.
