Graviton Otters are in!

I'm surprised OBP hasn't become a fantasy scoring mainstay. It's like WHIP for batters!  :awesome_for_real:

Title: Re: 2011 Bat Country Fantasy Baseball League
Post by: WayAbvPar on February 17, 2011, 10:44:23 AM
Except OBP has actual predictive and evaluative use, while WHIP is just wankery. OBPS is even better. Can we add one or both? And maybe shitcan WHIP for something like FIP or xFIP?

Title: Re: 2011 Bat Country Fantasy Baseball League
Post by: caladein on February 17, 2011, 12:12:02 PM
That FG league's saber-y 4x4 set-up is: OBP, SLG, HR, R and ERA, WHIP, HR/9, K which I think is quite good.  Swapping out WHIP for FIP is alright as well, or even for xFIP since actual HR rates would be accounted for via HR/9.

I have no idea if any of that is possible though via Yahoo.

(Also, in with the mighty Go Away Vernons.)

In with the Autodraft All-Stars.

FYI, FIP is not available as an option in Yahoo leagues (unlike such awesome categories as "Ground into Double Play" or "Outfield Assists").

Also, OPS >>> AVG, and Quality Starts make a fine replacement for Wins.  Not that I'm in this league or anything.

Title: Re: 2011 Bat Country Fantasy Baseball League
Post by: HaemishM on February 17, 2011, 01:28:15 PM
Went back and added OPS and Fielding Percentage as batting categories, took out WHIP and added Quality Starts and Holds.

Title: Re: 2011 Bat Country Fantasy Baseball League
Post by: caladein on February 17, 2011, 01:39:09 PM
Hrmm, they have WHIP and K/9 but no rate version of HR so we don't have the component parts for FIP either.  Can't do xFIP either because there's no fly balls stat.

I'm in!

If I can think of a name, I'm totally in! It's part of my training to be a real baseball fan!  :why_so_serious:

EDIT: I decided to be boring and call them The Jersey Girls (which is what I always call my fantasy football teams). Clearly these Jersey Girls moved to the Bay Area in the 50's.

Let's get some more peeps up in here!

Title: Re: 2011 Bat Country Fantasy Baseball League

8 days til the draft and we are still at 8/12 players. Surely there are baseball fans here who have not signed up yet!

Title: Re: 2011 Bat Country Fantasy Baseball League

I'll sign up soon, waiting on draft time from other league.

I will likely be unable to make the draft time, so my status is in limbo  :heartbreak:

I'll sign the fuck up, if only to toss another name in the ring. You can expect me to be around the bottom, unless Bautista pulls off his magic again  :drill:.

(I need time to study more players that aren't Blue Jays)

Signed up as Monkey Pitch

Post by: WayAbvPar on March 08, 2011, 08:39:00 AM
I have a reminder to rank some players Friday afternoon. I may get stuck with toddler patrol on Saturday, so my live participation in the draft is suddenly iffy.

Title: Re: 2011 Bat Country Fantasy Baseball League
Post by: Ingmar on March 08, 2011, 11:30:13 AM
3 spots open last I looked but I think Ash had not signed up yet.

Title: Re: 2011 Bat Country Fantasy Baseball League
Post by: Ingmar on March 10, 2011, 12:08:02 PM
Looks like I will be able to live draft, which makes my team name completely stupid, but oh well. Still only 9 teams in.

Title: Re: 2011 Bat Country Fantasy Baseball League
Post by: Celer on March 10, 2011, 03:35:09 PM
I believe an even number of teams is required for the draft, so that will need to resolve itself or the draft will just cancel itself.  I'll officially be on autodraft, which sucks, but I try to make up for it by making many totally ridiculous trade offers.

Title: Re: 2011 Bat Country Fantasy Baseball League
Post by: Ingmar on March 10, 2011, 03:41:00 PM
Thinking it might be a good idea to swap some of those pitching states to rate stats instead of counting stats, with 5/6 pitcher stats being counting stats, cheesy pitcher churning looks really valuable.

Title: Re: 2011 Bat Country Fantasy Baseball League
Post by: HaemishM on March 11, 2011, 08:13:43 AM
Added save percentage, winning percentage and Strikeouts per Walks Ratio as pitching categories.

An even number of teams is only required for a head to head league. This is a roto league because some people hate H2H.

I resemble that remark!

I don't hate it as much in baseball as football, but I still think roto/points race styles indicate the more skillfully assembled and managed team over the course of a season.

I think roto generally indicates who gives a shit and culls the weak in June.

That being said, if I'm not in the top half by mid-season and the Braves go into the tank, I will be accepting crazy trade offers before I go off the deep end and fill my team with Mets.

Arg, I think I might not be able to be around for the draft, so its up to the auto picker to save me!

Unless I can perhaps use a friends iPhone to draft somehow while we are up in Sonoma.

I know I won't be there since somebody put the tournament on a Saturday afternoon when I work in tax season!  :angryfist:

Worst. Draft time. Ever.

Unless there's some kind of Yahoo Fantasy application I'm not aware of, you're SOL as the draft site requires Flash.

I completely missed it. Was feeling like crap and took a nap without my phone nearby; then watched the Pac10 championship game before I even looked at the reminder on my phone. Hopefully I am not to screwed.

Edit- not too unhappy- got 3 of my top 9 ranked players in the first three rounds.

I totally forgot to draft, and was rewarded with a hrrbl team. That's ok, I like rebuilding projects...

Post by: stu on March 13, 2011, 09:59:50 PM
I made it in time for the second half of the draft. I auto'd three SS's and then took Infante in the late rounds. It's looks like everyone has a solid guy there, but I'm open to offers.

<Graviton Otters>

Title: Re: 2011 Bat Country Fantasy Baseball League
Post by: Celer on March 14, 2011, 06:25:20 AM
I have no idea what to think about the Frolics.  I'm weak at middle infield, which is probably how I'd have drafted it anyway, and I guess I'm going for power over speed.  I am a little worried about injuries.

Halliday, Kershaw, and Hamels makes me :awesome_for_real: and I hooray for the Beard!

Title: Re: 2011 Bat Country Fantasy Baseball League
Post by: Paelos on March 15, 2011, 06:16:31 AM
My infield rocks, my outfield sucks.

If anybody wants to send me offers, I'm putting both Kinsler and Fielder on the trading block if you need a decent 2B or 1B for an OF prospect.

You managed Joe Nathan in the 17th, which is the steal of the draft as far as I'm concerned. I was totally high on him but auto'd Bailey before I could get to the guy, then had to fill holes.  :tantrum:

edit: also, Chris Perez in the 16th for Paelos. Wow. So many good pitchers this year.

Season's about to start! I am exciiiiiiite.

Let's make some trades. I'm not sure if I can propose more than one trade at a time from the league menu, so I'm just posting here for now.

I have a surplus at SS and I'm sure some teams are hurting to upgrade there. My objective is to get a 1B or OF.

Everyone on my roster is available but here are my SS eligible players:

  • Hanley Ramirez
  • Jose Reyes
  • Alexei Ramirez
  • Omar Infante

Let's make a deal.

I throw out tons of offers to see if anything sticks, but I'd say I'm fair.

Damn you, Latos. I picked up sophmore Stauffer from the wire since he's the new Opening Day starter in SD. Bruce Bochy claims to fear him above all others, so why not.

Title: Re: 2011 Bat Country Fantasy Baseball League
Post by: HaemishM on March 31, 2011, 09:55:04 AM
I didn't realize there were games today. I've already got one OF on the damn DL too. Fuck.

EDIT: I also removed all the Max Games/Max Innings pitched shit. If anyone has a problem with no limits, let me know.

Title: Re: 2011 Bat Country Fantasy Baseball League

As long as we have a gentleman's agreement to not churn innings on pitchers I don't care about no limits.

Title: Re: 2011 Bat Country Fantasy Baseball League

Blarg, been distracted by 100 other things, and wasn't able to make it to the draft to boot.  I'm going to eventually get into the groove of things and start picking up people, trading, playing, I swear!  Just might start out slow.

Title: Re: 2011 Bat Country Fantasy Baseball League
Post by: stu on April 01, 2011, 10:33:15 AM
I have a quick question since I haven't done this in ages:

Are we supposed to update the starting order daily? I noticed a message that said one of my players didn't have a game today, so I moved someone from the bench into a starting position.

Title: Re: 2011 Bat Country Fantasy Baseball League
Post by: WayAbvPar on April 01, 2011, 10:43:09 AM
That is the best way to do it, especially now that there are no limits on games/innings. Of course, if your replacement is so far inferior to the starter that he will be more likely to drag your team down than contribute, you could just leave it empty for the day.

What is churning pitchers?

Title: Re: 2011 Bat Country Fantasy Baseball League
Post by: Celer on April 01, 2011, 07:40:00 PM
Picking up a pitcher (or 4) for one day, starting them, then dropping them and picking up new ones for the next day.  This is a good way to rack up lots of Ws, Ks, and QSs.  However, since waiver wire pitchers aren't usually the cream of the crop, it could easily hurt your ERA, K/BB, and Win%.

No real need to do this right away, but as the season goes on, and people see that those ratio stats are already out of reach, it will happen naturally.  :oh_i_see:

Hmm, did I miss out on a chance at a shortstop?  I would have loved a shot at Hanley...

I will be sending out trades to random people all weekend, everyone feel free to counter or reject them as you please.

Post by: stu on April 02, 2011, 12:15:29 AM
No one is untouchable! I still have Ramirez and Reyes, although I might be about done with trades for now. I'm kinda bummed that Reyes will probably never return to his '06-'08 numbers, but he's still exciting to follow when healthy. He's been around so long, I forgot that he's still in his twenties, but all that running creates a lot of wear and tear. Ahhhh, Mets... I'm crossing my fingers against the worst.

Yeah. That fucking hurt. The fact that their 3-4-5 hitters can't hit a fucking home run (or in Pena's case, anything) is killing them along with losing their 4 and 5 starters for a month.  Looks like another long year for Cubs fans unless they pull their fingers out quick.

Is that like getting PTSD from playing too much Modern Warfare? I'm not sure if that makes any sense on my end....

But, yeah, I finally dropped Huff today. My roster has been like a carousel, although some of these guys are finally starting to come around.
