Haha, I love the how they are advertising this sale.

Hmm, I'm eying that THQ pack, I own too much from most of the other packs.

Anybody know if any of the other games made by 1C are any good?  I've only played the 2 Kings Bounty games (which I really liked).

The THQ pack is nuts, unfortunately I own a lot of it already, or I'd be even more tempted.

I think i'll finally get Trine for 4 bucks though.

My god, I still haven't recovered from Christmas, and there's a ton of stuff in the $2-5 range in the normal sales that I'd actually buy.  This kinda terrifies me.

I have no idea, but when King's Bounty gold pack is $10 and the entire 1c pack is $20, I have no problem gambling $10. I can't imagine not getting $10 worth of fun out of so many unknown games where some look like they could be fun.

I'm tempted by the 1C pack... The Star Wolves are supposed to be pretty interesting (http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/showthread.php?t=57950), and Space Rangers 2 is Katauri's (of King's Bounty Fame) previous game. The rest looks like russian shovelware, but who knows... I guess I have time to think about it.

I've gathered a few Steam games I haven't played at all (Ghost Master, Evil Genius, Most of the Aliens / Zombie shooters, the Overlords...) and some of them weren't even part of packs, so I try to refrain myself, but I always end up buying more and more !

It's kinda weird, I don't see the 1C collection as a deal anymore, it's back to like 70 euros...Most of the individual games are still 75 % tough...

The Witcher is $6.79 on the sale and doesnt appear to be highlighted anywhere.
Picked it up along with the Overlord pack for $11.29.

Hmm, I just read the description for Space Rangers 2:
Quote
Future. We write the year 3300. Our galaxy is invaded by dominators, the combat robots that lost control under influence of Klissan technologies. A coalition of five allied races: Maloqs, Pelengs, Humans, Faeyans and Gaalians stakes on space rangers called up to root out dominators.
With a pitch like that, it must be good!   :awesome_for_real:

Puzzle Kingdoms is $1.  It's the ugly stepbrother of puzzle quest (literally, some of the devs had a hand in it), that got no press at all.  I paid much more than that for the DS version of it, and I felt that was money well spent.  It's a good, but slightly ugly game, and I'm pretty sure there's a demo out there somewhere for it, although maybe not on steam, but at $1, does that even matter?

http://store.steampowered.com/app/23700/

edit:  space rangers 2 is totally worth the pittance they want for it.  It's a space sandbox game sorta in the vein of star control 2/starflight.
edit edit:  wow, the steam page for it has the worst description + screenshots ever.  There are only shots of the ground battle portions of the game, which are the worst part to begin with.   Go look at the ones for space rangers 1 instead, since that's closer to reality.

I ended up buying Street Fighter 4 of all things.  That Marvel v Capcom 3 thread had me all in the mood for a fighting game and I was thinking..oh I'll wait til it goes on sale.  It wasn't a huge sale, but good enough (33% off I think) since I was already thinking about it.

Damn this thread.  I just bought:

Tropico 3
Space Rangers Pack
The Witcher
Trine
Overlord Pack

Not bad for 30 bucks.  Tropico 3 was the most expensive at 10 bucks since I missed the last sale.

5 bucks for Darwinia + Multiwinia, Defcon, and motherfuckin' UPLINK.

Uplink is worth it alone for five bucks.

Here's another one that's retardedly cheap during the sale.

Ghost Master, $.95
http://store.steampowered.com/app/6200/

Sorta of budget sim-ghost game, far as I can tell.  I haven't played it, took a quick peek at reviews, it appeared to be doing okay, and bought it before someone raised the price back up or it sold out because it's stupidly cheap.  I can't personally vouch for this one though, yet.

ARG

So much to buy.  Though I'm getting annoyed when I click on the "save 50% on all xxx company titles here" button, scroll down the list, see a game I'm interested in, only to find it is not getting a discount for some reason.   :oh_i_see:

Quick, Lum (or somebody else who might know), is Arsenal of Democracy any good?  I loved HOI2.

Puzzle Kingdom
Ghost Master
Introversion Pack

For the price of $6!

Sega Genesis Pack seems overpriced at $35.00

You know, I was going to be a dick and say "Do you really need to ask", but then I went digging.  There's a director's cut update for free that un-censor's it on Steam.  The base game however is the censored US enhanced edition.

I'm getting Steamjaded. A few things are tempting, but nothing made me pull the trigger.

Anno 1404 Gold, as I never got the expansion...but $20 is the expansion price anyway. The THQ pack is nice, but I own a lot of it and RTS isn't my favorite (can you pause and give orders in CoH and DoW?). Several things were $5-10 off tempting, like Bioshock 2. Looking forward to the dailies, I guess.

I did pull Indigo Prophecy off my wishlist.
maybe Gothic 3
If you haven't played Gothic 2 Gold, it's by far the better game.

not bad

I played that when it came out, I found it pretty fun, although I never managed to beat the damn final mission. Curse you, final mission!

I heard it was unplayable in Vista but I have no idea if that is true or not.

Overlord 2 was pretty disappointing IMO (I didn't even finish it).  Overlord 1 is well worth the $5 all on its own though, if you haven't played it.

(edit) I got The Witcher and the Introversion pack, both of which I own (except Multiwinia) but couldn't pass up a convenient copy of at that price.  And the indie pack because I owned none of those and one of them is bound to be good.  I am weak.

I'm trying to be strong and not purchase Bioshock 2 or the Overlord pack.  Bioshock 2.. I'm just not sure I should support in any fashion.  With Overlord, I'm just not sure I'd even play it.  I thought the demo of the first was fun for some giggles, but I'm sure that might get old.

edit: I'm also pretty sure Bioshock 2 would rape my pc.

RE5.. I imagine the control/movement scheme is just as bad on the PC?

If you want to play Resi 5, or any Capcom game for that matter, you have to accept that the way it controls is part of the gameplay : yeah, you play a gun turret, deal with it. I played using a 360 pad, because the game has been designed that way.

The game is gorgeous, and I really loved it. In fact you have plenty of options to deal with any given situation, to escape melee or to CC your way out of shitty situations.

Have you seen the PC games section in a Gamestop lately?  They'll probably send Steam a fruit basket for allowing them to reduce it to filling an empty mop bucket with whatever isn't behind the counter.

If by some miracle of god the next gen systems let steam work on them (so that you could just download any console game directly to the HD through steam) instead of forcing you to use their own digital distribution systems, the entire retail gaming infrastructure would collapse over night.  Just hop over to a Best Buy to get the console and its peripherals, and that'd be it.

It will never ever happen, but one can dream.

I liked it a lot.  The controls are kind of wonky, and it's either extremely hard or extremely easy depending on how much you muck with alchemy and fire magic.  It's pretty standard fantasy pap about sex, revenge, sex, magic, sex, and political intrigue.  And sex.  I thought it was worth it at $20.  At $6, I'd call it a no brainer.  Chapter 2 runs a lot longer in a relatively small area than I would have liked though.

Edit:  There is however the chance that it'll go lower yet over the next week during the daily sales.  At what it's at now, I'd personally bet it won't, but then, I wouldn't have expected Lead and Gold to go lower either.

My only gripes with Witcher would be that it's a bit of a system hog, has bad loading times (they used to be MUCH MUCH worse), the combat is mediocre, and yah, chapter 2 is long.  The inventory was apparently improved and some of the technical glitches and dialogue weirdness has been cleared up.

It's one of the best RPGs (computer or otherwise) released in the last few years.  Your decisions have ramifacations and they aren't easy to make considering everyone seems to be a complete bastard.  It's mature, sometimes in immature ways.  :awesome_for_real:

It's a worthwhile experience if you like single player (and single character) RPGs.  It's a unique experience.

Yeah that's up my alley, I actually prefer the single player stuff at time to mucking around with the AI group command BS in Dragon Age.

You do get AI assistance in some areas, but it's completely out of your control and almost always not helpful in the slightest.  Most of the time you're a lone wolf.

So is the Witcher worth it? That one sort of caught my eye as something viable on the list.

Just make sure you stick with it past the initial chapter. It gets much better. Also, the combat which seems really horrible in the beginning really opens up after you get a few more moves. It turns from a simple timed click, to sort of a rhythm game, that really feels like you are doing a sword dance.

Audiosurf $2.50 : Sure, if you don't already have it.
City of Heroes $9.99 : Get a buddy trial account or something if you are interested.
L4D2 $10.20 : Would imagine this is only worth playing at launch when everyone else is?
Supreme Commander 2 $7.47 :  :oh_i_see:
Company of Heroes $24.99 : No idea
SW FU $7.50 : I hear it is crap on the PC?
Zeno Clash $3.75 : ? ? ? ?
Hearts of Iron 3 $10.20 : No idea

Freedom Force 1&2
Space Wolves 1,2&3
Avencast

Zeno Clash is definitely worth picking up for the price. It's short, but the combat is pretty satisfying once you get a knack for it. I dream of a game that merges the weapon fighting of Dark Messiah with the pugilism from Zeno Clash.

I got to playing some this morning and just looked at the keybindings and immediately opted to plug in a 360 controller.  It really plays just fine with it.  I have the problems I usually have with 3rd person action games (namely, cameras are almost always not to my satisfaction, and this isn't different), but its still probably the most fun i've had with a star wars game since jedi knight 2

As far as I can work out, the Pirates (stand alone) expansion is super-set of the original game so you don't need to worry about getting it.

As for the game, it seems to run okay for me (W7 x64, GF 8800 GTS 512).  The only technical problem I've had is that movies are just a black screen in-game.  It's only a problem in that you can't watch the tutorial video in-game, but it's at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\the guild ii - pirates of the european seas\Movie\Tutorial1.mpg.

Thanks, I'm running a similar system, so I may pick it up for my economics fix since Ubisoft DRMed the Settlers to hell and back. Also, it appears that Gothic 3 is out at patch 1.60 and upgradable to community patch 1.74, so the reviews went from "buggy POS" to "awesome game now that the tech issues were solved."

I'm going to grab Gothic 3 as well.

I briefly thought about buying Europa Univeralis III, and then I looked at the steam forums which are quite littered with "this game is crashing on Windows 7" bug posts.

That put that thought safely to bed. Until tomorrow, Steam.

EDIT: Also, my first impression of playing the Witcher: "Wow this journal display is really fucked up."

Tell me about star wolves and avencast. Avencast = diablo?

So far on list:

Gothic II: Gold Edition
Trine
Ghost Master®
Introversion Complete Pack
Oddworld Pack

I am not sold on gothic and trine quite yet, they are in the maybe category.

I'd hold off until it gets a little cheaper in that case.  Oddworld should tide you over nicely.

It's Total War + RPG elements in a historical fantasy setting.

Also, I'd recommend Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising it for $5 if you like simulation first person wargames. Keep in mind, you're infantry for almost all of it so there's a good bit of running. It's fairly realistic. It's not call of duty; guys stay dead, enemy reinforcements exist, and people shoot semi-accurately. You have your own squad, there's a good bit of sneaking around and it was fairly enjoyable to me. I like it more than the "one man unstoppable army" call of duty type games. Sneak in, achieve objective, get out.

Don't think so. I only play single player anyway.

Edit: Consensus is the game is shit, especially online, and to just buy ArmA2 instead. One problem: ArmA2 isn't $5. I guess I had atypical 'fun' with it.

I cannot in good conscience recommend Operation Flashpoint. Its realistic if by realistic you mean imagining having to walk around with an 90 lb sack on your back but instead of the intuitive controls that your brain affords your limbs, you're stuck with a xbox controller pad. You can actually -feel the tedium and exhaustion- of climbing up some god forsaken hill, only to get shot down by some enemy you won't see till your 5th load game.   Its all a counter intuitive mess with the weakest storyline since Dick and Jane.

Gothic 2. Do you like rpg? Jap or Euro? If you like eurorpg, it's one of the best ever made (imo).

Found this old tweak I posted in another thread here for those indulging:

Quote
One thing I found makes the game a bit nicer is a cheat for draw-in. Activate the cheat console (Press 'C' for the character screen and type in 'marvin', hit 'C' again and you should see "MARVIN MODE" in the corner). Hit f2 to bring up the console and type in zh, which should autocomplete to zhighqualityrender, and hit enter, then close the console. This will draw in all the distance stuff, no more draw-in popup! It's a bit taxing on the system, but runs ok in most places on my clunker pc (though it crashes in the swamp, but you don't need it there anyway). You do need to reactivate it any time you teleport or even save the game (but it's not a big deal - f2, zh, enter)

Yay! I have wanted to try King Arthur- ~$15 is a good price.

For whoever asked about Dogfighter- i bought it a couple of weeks ago on a whim. Played about 5 minutes of it and quit. The m+kb controls are fucking clownshoes...may try again with a 360 controller. Was unimpressed by the little I did play, but not being able to keep from crashing due to shit controls may have colored my impressions a bit.

Couldn't find my Jagged Alliance 2 disks, and want to see if it will run on the netbook for my holiday, so checked if it was on special. Cha-ching! 10$ for Jagged alliance 2 would make me happy, the expansion plus disciples 2 and its expansion as effectively freebies are sweet.

Not to much interest in the dailies though. I know a friend of mine seems fairly addicted to the King Arthur game but I always feel slightly bad about the stacked corpses in army games.

On my machine the intro for the first half ran like it was a slide show. I thought I was going to be one of those for whom the game does run but apparently after thrashing around for a while it got everything it needed loaded into memory or something and ran okay after that. Not the best graphics performance but tolerable.

Given the size of the game, FU might be highly susceptible to a fragmented drive.  You might try a defrag and see if things improve.

Here's an update on my purchases so far:

Puzzle Kingdoms:  It's ok.  I can see why it was available for $1.  The problem with this game is I'm on the third "Kingdom" (level) and I've only encountered one puzzle type.  There are a couple twists on it at the end of the level where you can do some bonus fights to earn extra boosts for your army, but essentially it's one long grind playing the same crappy and simplistic puzzle game.

Overlord Bundle:  This is worth the $4.60.  My buddy saw me playing and commented "nice graphs."  The game is not as deep as I'd like, Bullfrog did a much better job with the humorist take on being evil in the 90s with Dungeon Keeper, and there's a little too much running around wondering where the fuck to go since there isn't a mini map (or a map of any kind).  Generally that's only a problem when they want to get sheisty and hide shit, as in the case of the Elf forest level.  Ultimately though, they strike a nice balance between puzzles, combat, and decorating.  Your castle starts off as a busted up terd, and as you gain wealth you can buy upgrades for it to spruce it up.  You can even get a forge and craft customized weapons and armor.  The expansion Raising Hell doesn't really add much besides a few levels.  I haven't played Overlord 2 but it looks like more of the same. Probably the coolest thing about the game to me is how your minions will pick up weapons and armor that has fallen from slain enemies and equip themselves, thus raising their effectiveness. Bottom line is I've sunk 10 hours into Overlord and it's kinda satisfying to send 30 minions into a room to smash shit up, get drunk, start pissing everywhere, and then kill everyone.

I haven't had time to dig into Overlord yet, but I did love this aspect of the demo. Hated losing a minion who had picked up a cool combo of gear.

I'm going to ask for some clarity, since it's pretty poorly worded. However, "buy new shit and we'll refund your old shit" seems like a pretty lazy policy.  It's not like I played a game and just didn't like it.  A defective PC port seems like one of those situations where you should be able to get your money back.

Of course, I was likely to spend the money anyhow.  So, I may just run with this.

My ticket:

I would like to request a refund for this purchase.

The game does not run well on my system that meets all requirements. The first level is nearly played in slow motion as I'd estimate that the FPS is in the single digits. The subsequent level plays at a decent speed with some noticeable slowdowns, but accessing menus will start taxing my system heavily leading to a full lock up. Often just playing will lead to a lock up after 5-10 minutes.

This is not a functioning PC port and I would consider it to be a defective product. I would very much like to get my money back, as I shouldn't have to pay for something that simply does not work as promised.

There's a nice PS3 fight pad that MadCatz (I think) makes that my girlfriend got alongside Super Street Fighter IV, and it works perfectly on a PC. It's pretty good for emulation and such as well. Just don't play it with console ports that need two analog sticks.

While I agree with your argument, it's worth noting that there are no brick and mortar stores which I know of that would grant you a refund for a game that doesn't run well/at all on your machine unless due to a physical defect with the disk.  Let me know what they say, I'm guessing just a "sorry, but our policy..." spiel.

Yeah, I think its actually nice they are refunding you in Steam Credits more or less.  All stores I know stopped allowing returns for that reason, or at best will give you in store credit to buy something else.

Having said that, you didn't just buy a copy of a game you could burn to a disk and bring back, and all they need to do is just flip a switch (well, and the cost in time and money to refund your card).

My system more than met the requirements.  My system could not play the game at all.  Pretty clear cut for me.  The product is defective.  Defective shit should be returnable if acted on in a prompt time frame.

Return policies as a whole for software are retarded, but I suppose they're in place to prevent abuse.  There's been at least 2 console games I've wanted to return in the past month, one due to a key feature not working at all and the other being a piece of Madden worthy "get it out this year" shovelware full of obvious bugs and half implemented systems.  Makes you really appreciate how flexible other product areas are (especially baby/toddler stuff) about returns.  As is, I'll probably just wait for a Gamestop deal and turn those two fun yet defective pieces of software into something else that probably only got token QA.

The last game I pirated was due to not believing that my min spec system could handle it.  It couldn't.  Surprise, surprise. (Later upgraded and bought the game).

Heh, buy software at a brick & mortar store.  They provide nothing anymore but a box I have to throw away.   Best Buy's policy has changed to "same thing only if there was a defective disk" or some such.

edit: And don't think I'm not grateful for this.  I think their solution is workable.  And yah, like Teleku said, they can easily insure that I cannot play this game anymore.

My complaint was that the product (Metro 2033) wouldn't load unless I had uninstalled and reinstalled multiple drivers (physx and directx) that came packaged with the game each time I wanted to play it, and that it was defective. I was linked to their policy stating they don't issue any refunds. They then followed up with asking tech support questions and offering to help get it running. I thanked them for offering to assist in solving an issue, informed them of how poor of a decision that was that they sell a shoddy product that even has a number of threads and complaints on their own forums, and don't offer refunds when their product doesn't work as it should without having to perform such tasks every time I wished to load up the game.

So there are some differences here (your's started but doesn't run well, mine didn't start without a kick in the ass but ran fine once it got started), though I think both products are defective in their own right.

Which makes me pretty damn happy because JA2 and a netbook means I'm pretty much boredom immune when travelling.

Indeed the netbook as a retro-gaming machine shows some promise... It can't run anything remotely modern, 3D or high res (go go intel graphics chips) but there's some old classics that should live happily there. And the steam sale is an excellent time to pick some up cheap. Next target is an old RPG... and maybe one of the turn based X-com games too.

Also, which Xcom out of the pack should I play first?

Play original Xcom first. Play Terror from the Deep second, then stop, because seriously, there are no other xcom games.

Go in order, IMO it's the only way to do it with xcom

I tried that when I got the pack a few months ago, never got past the first game.  That shit is hard.  If you don't know what you're doing when your feet hit the ground, you're completely fucked.  What to research, how much to spend, how to set up your base.  And if you fuck it up, you'll be fending off giant waves of superaliens every five minutes with nothing in your research list but some shitty weapons and some backstory entries.  And you can't just shrug and reload your last save to fix it, your game is fundamentally fucked, you may as well start over from square one.

God damn, this sale is destroying my wallet.  I have no idea where I'm going to find time to play this stuff.  Is there a time I'm going to look at my game library and go "Earthworm Jim 2, that's what I want to play right now, hell yeah"?

So it looks like Xcom:apocalypse was the last of the isometric / tactical games before they tried spinning it off into more action oriented formats?

Also looks like the point at which "so ugly my eyes bleed" and "the netbook can run it" meet. Pretty sure I've played it long ago but while I don't remember breaking floppies in disgust I don't remember how much fun it was.

As for the steam sale, it's been fairly mean for my wallet. Literally tons of old games I'd completely forgotten about, but wouldn't mind playing through, and tons of new games I'd never even heard of.

Thats impressive, especially considering steam doesn't even have physical copies of games.

I haven't actually bought that specific UFO game, I bought the XCOM pack (this one (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/964/)), but I'll make sure to scoop that one up as well. I see I forgot to mention that that URL was given to me by a friend of mine, who said it was more or less like the good old XCOM of olde. I've no real idea how it plays, but I'll live with it possibly being a duff if it's still 10 euro when I get home later today.

I loaded up Gothic 3 without playing any of the previous games or reading anything about the controls. I figured, I've played a lot of games, I'll figure it out.

I get dumped immediately into a large battle of orcs with a huge window across my screen telling me how to pick up a sword. I proceed to do this and it tells me how to attack and parry. I dispatch 3 orcs by spamming attacks over and over. "Really?" I think, "This is too easy, I haven't even worried about a defensive parry. Let's try that." I let the orc try to hit me while getting ready to parry. The parry fails, and the orc knocks me on my ass. Two other orcs gang rape me unconcious. I try to get up several times only continuing to be corpse camped by the computer for about 6 minutes until my friends can kill enough of the orcs to let me stand.

I then went out into the wilderness to try fighting something else, got poisoned by a giant wasp. After it was dead I think, "Surely, it won't let my health tick all the way down and kill me." Then, I died.

So that went well.  :awesome_for_real:

There is something refreshing about a game that actually tries to kill you, instead of just losing in an entertaining fashion.

Gothic is not Elder Scrolls. You can, and often will, stumble into places You Should Not Be. You should be playing Gothic 2 anyway :) If you stick with 3, find and install the fan patch. Follow the old pre-Elder Scrolls mantra of Save Early, Save Often. Learn to parry. The fighting system is funky but I like it once you learn the quirks. Don't be afraid to high-tail it out of there. Once you learn some of the 'oh shit' monsters (at least as a lowbie), you can usually get out after they see you....but I have had a few times where I got into some badness that I couldn't shake and keystone kops ensued back to town.

Eurowank RPG.  Witcher was a good one of those, but nothing said here makes Gothic sound good.  It sounds interesting.. just not good.

Updated. Any insight on The Void, Shatter, or Red Orchestra?

As for Red Faction Guerrilla, I bought it on a previous sale or got it in a package or some crap and haven't had time to play much, but the little I did play it seemed like a decent fps/action game. I'd risk $5 for it based on what little I did play as it could surely make for a nice game for a rainy day at the very least.

I'd say so, especially if you like open world games.  I eventually got tired of it in the same way I get tired of all open world-type games, but even if you don't like them playing around with the destructible environment is well worth the $5.

It does have GFWL, so that's going to annoy you once you try and get it running.

Gothic 3 apparently came out at the same time as Elder Scrolls, but graphically you wouldn't know it. The models, facial motions, and animations are much more advanced in the Elder Scrolls stuff. Also, Oblivion did a better job of "Here's where to go," almost to the point of stupidity. In that regard, I liked Gothic more because I have to work a little to find things, which is where the explorer part of me wants to play. Putting a big arrow on top of shit sucks the world aspect of the game out of it for me.

Gothic is a little clunkier I'd say. The play value is still good, and you have unlimited inventory which is a plus and minus. I feel like if it's not bolted down, I'm grabbing it. I'm running the latest community patch 1.74, which fixed the bugs, and stopped crashes. However, the game will fucking kill you and not think twice.

For this round, I'd take shatter, torchlight and the void. Shatter because it's the best breakout game since arkanoid, torchlight because it's awesome, and the void because it's ... well, it's the void. It's cool and worth $5. I already have all but shatter though.

Don't really know about red orchestra, but arma2 is the go-to for realism. Pass on flatout because they removed locational vehicle damage.

I definitely recommend getting The Void for 5 bucks.  While not for everyone, it's fantastic in my opinion.  If you're impatient/easily frustrated/hate resource  management games/hate anything that could be considered an art game, perhaps don't get it.  Otherwise, buy the damn thing.

Yeah I make it a point now to really scour the forums first for technical issues due to some of my bargain purchases at the beginning of the year. There is a lot of gold out there, but if the front page is soured with "WTF CRASHES" posts, I'm not even wasting $5 to play the CTD Lottery.

It has a lot of touches that make it feel realistic, but still a lot of fun.  It's hard to explain, really.  There are many more little things you have to worry about, similar to Arma or WW2OL, but it manages to avoid the cock-punchy feel.  A good example is the feel of the iron sights.  There is a lot more finesse needed to use them compared to other games, where they are often simply a zoom + accuracy boost.  When you succeed with a nice long range shot using them, though, it's that much more satisfying.

My friends and I would grab this game every time they did the 'free weekend' deals, and had a blast for a few days each time.  We were just too lazy/cheap to actually plunk the money down.  It is hands down better than Battlefield 2, as far as infantry combat goes.  No vehicles is the only drawback.

How well designed is the multiplayer server browser? Even if it is way better than BC2 or CoD, if it has a sparse server listing and/or horrible filtering controls, I'd think twice about it. I know, sounds like whine, but really, the BC2 browser makes Baby Shiva cry.

As far as I remember, Red Orchestra's server browser is no different from a standard Steam one.

Also, if you get RO, you also get a few bonus 'games' as well, like Mare Nostrum, which is essentially a free mod campaign, and is apparently set in North Africa.

One thing to be aware of, though, is that RO's community is really small. The Steam server browser only shows maybe a dozen heavily active RO servers, and no active Mare Nostrum ones.

Red Orchestra undeservedly won the Make Something Unreal contest I believe. It's a "realistic" WWII mod focused on Russians Vs. Nazis and the experience can be summed up as running around confused until you suddenly fall over dead.

The EA sale a while back motivated me to finally actually play Mass Effect, which made me realise what a strong game it is and how much I wanted to see what happened in the sequel. So very happy to see the single EA title I want re-appear on the daily sales. 40$ US isn't really an amazing special given inflated prices and retail discounts but damnit, I want.

Still need to finish my infiltrator veteran / paragon and vanguard hardcore play through though... but at least it's sitting ready for me now.

Are there any horror stories with GTA: San Andreas on PC?  I've been eying it all this sale as I've never played it, but didn't think to see if it actually worked :awesome_for_real:.

As for the rest: $54 for Dragon Age Origins DDE and Awakening is a bit hard to recommend the day after $30 less bought you Mass Effect 2 (and I played the pants off Dragon Age when it came out).  If you are thinking about getting Dragon Age, do spring for the Digital Deluxe Edition for $6 more as that gets you Warden's Keep (which is quite good) for basically a dollar less than the DLC price.

Awakenings was good, if constantly disappointing, but $24... yeah.  I'd only get it if you've already been waiting for it to go on sale.

Titan Quest Gold is an easy recommendation at $5 if you dig Diablo II-clones.  I wouldn't recommend it over Torchlight, but they're different enough that I like keeping both around.

See, that sounds good on paper, but my problem is that I tend to get totally engrossed in one or two games that eat all my time, and then when I get sick of those, rather than going back to those games I've got sitting around, i get something new to play all the time.  It leaves me precious little time for games I won't play much.  Of course, if theres a single player game I can knock off in a day or two and then shelf it and say  "that was worth 5 bucks" thats the sort of thing I've been trying to pick up on this sale generally.

Maybe not the most rational way to determine what to buy, but it works for me.

Well, there's a demo for Tropico if you're balking on it, but it's been one of my favorite sim type games since the first one came out, just for bringing something a tiny bit different to the table.  Executing one's political rivals never gets old, dammit.

It worked when I tried it. Looks terrible but cranked as high as it can go it's not too bad.  The PC controls are kind of bad, but weren't too bad to get used to.

Update on my return: it went through but Steam said basically, "this is a one time deal, we won't do it again."

Sounds good.  However, in less than a month my life is going to get owned by Starcraft II.  For how long, who knows.  Then Cata's coming up.  GAH. Fuck you, Blizzard.

edit: It'd be rad if Blizzard titles went to Steam at some point.  The prices for some of their older games that I've lost disks (SC, WC3) for are quite outrageous.

edit: It'd be rad if Blizzard titles went to Steam at some point.  The prices for some of their older games that I've lost disks (SC, WC3) for are quite outrageous.
If you still have the keys you can register them on the new B.Net and then download the games.

Tell me about it.  A few years back I couldn't find me D2 disks and I actually went as far as buying the battlechest.  Of course, a year after that I found the originals.

My brother-in-law sure is glad he married my sister right now. I used these Steam sales to convert as many games as possible to digital format via steam and gog (some are old enough to already have data errors as I realized with Bards Tale 3 a year ago), and he gets all the boxed versions from me. 14 right now and counting. Damn you Steam!

Are there any horror stories with GTA: San Andreas on PC?  I've been eying it all this sale as I've never played it, but didn't think to see if it actually worked :awesome_for_real:.
Best GTA. Vice City had a couple lingering issues on the PC, but I don't remember any in SA. Of course, use a gamepad.

Same boat with the DA:O stuff, still spendy, especially since I bought the box version and would need to re-buy it. And I've yet to actually finish it. Unless that expansion is as big as the entire game, they probably shouldn't be charging the same price as the entire game imo. No burning desire for the expansion when I'm happily playing ME2, which is definitely worth the $23 I paid for it.

Already have X3:TC on shteam, I'd consider TQ but I bought it on Impulse for less a long time ago and still haven't played it.

Beware of Thief:DS, it's fucked for widescreen. I was able to get it working at 720p when it originally came out, but for some reason 1080p was just fucked. I got it in the Eidos pack at xmas and tried getting it running a couple months ago.

I wonder if System Shock 2 will ever be released on Steam, what the hell kinds of legal AIDS is going with that game. I played it once and lost the discs and was never able to find it reasonably again. At this point it's probably too dated to bother with, but it is kind of odd that great game disappeared off the face of the planet (along with the SMAC expansion!). Yeah..also need SMAC+ the expansion! And Sid's SimGolf!

SMAC+SMAC was rereleased as some sort of bundle in the UK and can be found on eBay for <$10 these days, which is a nice change from the days when it was $90+.

I'm tempted by Thief 3, but not that tempted, since I have a free copy of Thief 2 from Computer Gaming World.

Dragon Age Awakening at $24 is still $9 too high for me to bother with, especially since a Steam copy of the game won't work with a retail disc version.

Yeah, this. I'm at the point where it's no longer worth my while to buy boxed PC games (excepting bargain basement LAN-fodder). But I've certainly stopped buying new release PC games altogether. I just wait for them to come out on Steam, and then go on deep sale.

I haven't bought anything with this sale - I still haven't installed all the shit I bought over Christmas, let alone played them...

Is Thief or Thief II the one that I should apparently play? I have one or both on disc, but it broke when I tried to play it a couple of years ago. Does whichever one is important to play run alright on modern systems via Steam?

Thief 1&2 aren't on Steam, only Thief 3.  None of Looking Glass' old stuff is on there, looks like (Thief 3 is by Ion Storm).   I believe there are often some issues getting them to run on anything newer than Windows 98, anyway.

Do you have a widescreen monitor?

http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/wiki/Thief:_Deadly_Shadows

I mentioned earlier I couldn't get it running at 1080p, but had run it at 720p when it first came out. I think it's a really solid entry into the franchise for the first half of the game. I haven't been able to finish it because the middle part gets completely out of hand with the factions all slaughtering each other and blaming it on you, making you KOS to just about everything between missions.

But for $3, if you like the series and can get it working, it's a good deal (also: look for the user-made high res packs). Even with the AI wonkiness, I still want to go back and play it.

Also, it seemed to work ok on 7, other than resolution issues - which is because Ion Storm ported it from the xbox and didn't open the .ini to real resolutions, but made it Resolution = 3 (or 4 or whatever retardedness).

Yeah, as sky says, for thief, it's recommended you use the high resolution pack as well as the widescreen hack:

Here's the link to it: http://www.john-p.com/textures/Thief-DS/index.shtml

I haven't loaded up thief yet. I think it's worth $3, and I'm eager to see the aforementioned most scary level ever.

Edit: it doesn't like dual cores, make sure you set the affinity to cpu0

He returned a game where they gave him credit. I had inquired about that since I was told under no circumstances do they issue refunds. So he has updated more news that he was given.

As for Steam running slow, it has been since this sale started which is pretty understandable since their servers must be taking a beating right now.

A little piece of cool news:

Quote from: Mario
Thanks for all the support for Shatter during the sale yesterday.

The online reporting will be a little foggy until we get a few days clear of it. However, by applying a comprehensive analysis I believe I can accurately estimate the number of copies sold at "shitloads".

It is even possible that we sold more than twice as many copies of Shatter yesterday alone as we have sold since initial release in March right up until the sale.

Quote from: Mario
[Is this a good thing?]
The answer is yes.

While we may have been able to make some portion of those sales at the full $9.99 price, the discount will have helped some people make up their mind, and will have brought in new customers who had never heard of it before. There is now a much larger pool of players, hopefully many of whom are advocates of the title and will suggest it in the future to their friends.

So, we get a revenue spike, a more active player base, more subscribers to our Facebook/Twitter etc, and a word of mouth boost out of it that should help our ongoing sales.

Digital distribution is awesome.

Borderlands at ~$10 is really crazy.

The only other stand-out besides that and HL2 is Beat Hazard ($2.49).  It's a twin-stick shooter mixed with Audiosurf, although it's different in one key way.  Whereas Audiosurf varies from calm and slightly boring to vaguely uncontrollable, I think Beat Hazard does a much better job of using slow sections for pacing and really letting the fast parts of tracks give you a boost instead of just forcing to hold on and hope for the best.

Torchlight was/is a great deal at $5. I bought it for $10 quite a while back and felt lioke I got my cash worth. borderlands felt like a ripoff at $25 or whatever when I bought the 4pack. At $10, I'd probably have seriously considered it, IF I can get 2-3 other people I know to play with me. It sucks playing alone.

For those of you who got empire at war, this is the best conversion+addon for it, and I plan on playing it:

Borderlands is a good deal for $10 but not for any more than that. Since I already had it I picked up all the DLC for $10 total. Hoping its worth it. The island of doctor Zed is interesting and a major major visual change but kinda dull as fuck with no one else to play with.
Anything with Mad Moxxie is worth it.

Are there any horror stories with GTA: San Andreas on PC?  I've been eying it all this sale as I've never played it, but didn't think to see if it actually worked :awesome_for_real:.

I got GTA:SA on PC back when it first came out and it worked fine for me.

This.

Birth of America is a smidgen too neck-beardy for me.  It's also pretty low budget, I noticed countless typos in the text from just doing the tutorial.  I might try a campaign later when I have time.  If you're in the mood for some historical turn based grognard gaming, this is a safe play at $1.50.

Yeah, not a lot there aside from the obvious (Portal or Freedom Force for $2).  Battlefield BC2 is really good but I got it for less than that more than three months ago.

Seeing the original Mount & Blade for ~$10 did made me look up Mount & Blade Warband (http://store.steampowered.com/app/48700/) and that's only $5 more.

I was thinking of Metro 2033. Anyone played that to completion? Or is it one of these visual candy FPS that are cool for the first few hours and then you find yourself thinking of it as work?

Also looking at Singularity. New game, not on sale, but it looks like its finally an FPS with, you know, a real story.

I'd suggest avoiding Metro 2033 (technically shitty, check steam forums for complaints), otherwise the sale isn't bad it's just not overwhelming imo.

It's really not.

Well, the hook is sort of fine, but the whole hook parachute dynamic frustrates the hell out of me. You want to get up 10 feet, you hook and try and parachute and woahhhh camera spins and suddenly you're sailing away from the building. I never finished the game and I never really enjoyed it either.

Well that pushed me to finally pick up World of Goo...

What's the deal with Mount and Blade? Should I get just the base game, or pick up the expansion as well to get the graphics upgrades? (Do the graphics upgrades even apply to the core game?)

Sam and Max is definitely worth picking up at that price IMO.  This season has been good stuff so far.

World of Goo at 5 bucks should be an insta-buy if you haven't played it.

Any thoughts on Devil May Cry 4?

You just need Warband.  It has everything the base game has and almost all the mechanical changes (e.g. lance crouching) have toggles to go between Original-style and Warband-style.

I picked up an insane amount of gaming for under 75 bucks throughout this sale. These Steam sales getter better every time, I wonder if I'll ever bother buying a new, full priced release again.

Left 4 Dead 2
Mount and Blade: Warband
Borderlands + all DLC
Shatter
Red Faction Guerrilla
Samorost 2
Broken Sword: Twin Pack
Ghost Master
Introversion Complete Pack
Puzzle Kingdoms
Avencast
Gothic Bundle

I've certainly scaled back on it in a major way since these things started, though games still often get me excited early enough that I want to.  My new consideration is: "Will I play this multiplayer more than twice a week" if the answer is yes, I'm willing to pick up right away, since it will likely replace whatever my current "go to" game is for that genre.  However, if I only intend to play single player, or I'm not 100% sold on it, I just put it off.

For instance, the next "full price" game I will buy is likely to be Civ 5, but who can blame me there :drill:

Left 4 Dead 1&2

I re-bought the Gothics and the Witcher, I had the Witcher through some download site for the EU version on release, Steam is much easier to deal with. Very happy with ME2 for $23. Also grabbed RE5 and Indigo Prophecy, which were on my wishlist. Only one I'm really debating is maybe getting Anno 1404 Gold, have to rebuy it on Steam if I want the expansion that way. Somewhat tempted by the THQ thing for CoH and DoW series, but money's too tight for that right now.

Oh man, I almost forgot I wanted Witcher, thanks. I was waiting to see if the last day would bring back that $6 and change price. I haven't played the Enhanced version and it will be nice to have on Steam anyway. A few of my others were also re-buys just for the convenience having them on Steam.

I'd still take a quick mail to valve to verify if they've removed it on that version as well, since I copied it directly from their store page. If they've removed it, then they should remove the mention of it as well.

Let me elaborate: I don't give a shit.

The new system sounds like a pita (the settlers/asscreed2), but I already own a copy of Anno 1404. If I have to call to install, ok, whatever. I'll worry about it in eight years or whenever I'm on my third install, if I'm not playing whatever the latest iteration of Anno is. I don't really go back and play old games much.

Yeah I played it for about 20 hours before I just couldn't handle the combat stupidity anymore. The world was really fun and cool, but the combat is just eye-gougingly horribly with no real feedback on what you could be doing to improve.

Even the alternate AI via the community patch only moderately improved the situation. I mean, why the fuck do I have to make an active decision to kill someone when I've been hacking them to bits already with my sword? Also, I can kill a city of orcs, but I get gangraped by three wolves and can't get up? WTF?

How is that crazy? I'm far from alone in my troubles with Metro 2033 and that is the worst experience I've had getting a game to run. It may have developed into the most amazing shooter in the world, but I wouldn't know since the trouble to get it to work every time was too big of a pain in the ass to deal with.
