Title: Archer
Post by: Yegolev on January 22, 2010, 06:34:28 AM
Spiritual successor to Frisky Dingo.  I was wary.  I also wanted Adam Reed to do Archer's voice even though I like Jon Benjamin.  However, Benjamin works and the writing is intact.  I say it is good after two episodes.

The pilot episode kind of fell flat to me - maybe because it felt like I'd already seen all the joke. But based on my love of Frisky Dingo, I stuck with it. It's starting to hit its stride now. I watched last night's episode with my wife this morning. I loved it. She made this face  :ye_gods: all through it.

I was about to make a topic for this.  Stop reading my mind!

I loved Sealab, Frisky Dingo, and Jon Benjamin (Coach McGirk in Home Movies).

Premiere was so-so, but the followups have been wonderful.  There's usually a couple classic lines per episode...  like the hooker/call girl definition.

Edit:
Karate?  The Dane Cook of martial arts?

Just caught the first three episodes on Hulu and really love it so far.  Office humor of most any type usually drives me up walls, but the exchanges are zany and short enough that they work for me.

The breast cancer ep was pretty good....  but I thought this week's "chemo rampage" episode was hilarious.

This season has been weak so far IMO, but the last 2 episodes were much better.

I wish they would give Judy Greer's character more to do. I love Judy Greer! Even in utter garbage like Jawbreaker and The Curse she's awesome. But she might as well not even be in Archer.

Are you kidding? She had the throwaway line of the episode with, "Casablumpkin".

Don't get me started with her rubber cement eating a few eps back. She's on a slow burn to something really insane.

I am very intrigued by Wilfred.  That looks like it's either going to be darkly hilarious, or completely awful.

Overall, FX really has a good record with original programming....  Sons of Anarchy and Damages, the first 4 seasons or so of Rescue Me, even Terriers and Lights Out were getting some rave reviews even if no one was watching them.

The League is very funny too - it's as wrong if not more wrong than Always Sunny, but more suburban dad/football nerd gone wrong type of funny.

I really like Archer, especially the newer ones that actually make a shred of sense.  Love his butler!  The one in the swamp was really good, the writing has drastically improved from the first season.

Yeah FX has good shows, but my favorite, Rescue Me, jumped the shark when Gavin went back on the sauce.  Fuck that shit, those story lines have been done to death already.  Gave me four or five great years though.

"Bitch, I'm covered with ants!"

She really gets the best lines every episode.

Archer had alot of great lines this episode:

"What is this, a broken glass factory?"
"How is this happy fun time?"
"What is this, a soldier factory?"

Also, while dismissive of everyone else, he tries to hit on EVERY woman he runs into....  even the old blue-haired ladies.

The first season seems to be on sale everywhere now...  picked it up for $10.  Rewatching the season, there are some nice background jokes that I missed the first time.

I missed this show because I didn't have more than basic cable for years, but finally caught it on Netflix and caught the 3rd season on a streaming site.  It just keeps getting better, and I don't know how the hell that's possible.

Plus, the way they throw in all the inside jokes while maintaining a level of comedy that is accessible to a first time viewer is just brilliant.

Top 5 adult cartoons

Venture Bros.  (Holloween Special showed they still have plenty of gas even with the long production delays)
Futurama (falling because the last half season was weak)
Archer (climbing fast, snappy dialog, quality actors, fertile premise, clearly poised to take #1)
Robot Chicken  (A little long in the tooth, but still doing strong)
Bob's Burgers. (love it or hate it, I love it)

Dishonorable mention: The Mcfarlane Trio, while still having some funny moments, is going the way of Simpsons. Time to put these zombies to rest.

Not just you, we've had similar discussions at work.   Last weeks episode and the one in the restaurant were both pretty good, but still below the first 3.

The snakebite one was just wholly disappointing and could have gone so many more places than James Mason and Archer take a restrained walk through his childhood.

It feels like Reed's being reined-in and the show's suffering for it.

Have you seen the trailer for next week's show? It's actually titled "Archer Vice" and looks to be some of the stuff that happened in that trailer. I think that montage may actually turn out to be accurate. AND AWESOME.

Title: Re: Archer
Post by: Surlyboi on January 15, 2014, 01:18:34 PM
The montage was real.

Basically, the writers got bored of the spy story and turned Isis into a cartel this season.

I was expecting someone different to die.  I got a chuckle but it was a joke that outlived its humor so I was glad they ended it.

I only just started watching the series - bought S1 an S2 on iTunes but S3 is $50 Aud and I'm not sure I am going to pay for it. No season 4 on iTunes either and no streaming straight after US release like GoT or Walking Dead makes me wonder what they are thinking. While the first two seasons are cheap-ish, I might wait for the rest to go to DVD bargain bins.

Love the series though.

Whatever!

I agree this one was pretty weak, but I also don't know exactly what they were riffing on.  The whole hot tub rehash really made me think that it was some plot from Miami Vice or another cop drama, thus the final "Stuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuupid plan" line.

The in-jokes and one-offs were still pretty spot-on.

I recently read a theory online that Sterling Archer is autistic (somewhere on the spectrum, anyway).  One of the pieces of evidence in support of which is that he's the only one who counts every bullet in a gunfight.  If that's actually intended by the writers I think it's the most badass thing ever.

Why the fuck would anyone make a trailer region restricted?

Because they are fucking arseholes.  And it's getting more frequent.

International IP laws and an over abundance of caution.

I found a site (http://www.indiewire.com/article/watch-archer-season-7-teaser-magnum-pi-homage-spoof-title-opening-greatest-event-in-television-history-20160201) with a version that plays in the filthy UK.

And now I have the Magnum P.I. theme song stuck in my head.  :awesome_for_real:

This is easily my fav show on TV atm. I just wish I could watch it when my kids are still awake. They see animation and assume I am watching one of 'their' shows.

I love that Ray was in the wheelchair for the first few minutes and then he just stands up like it's nothing.  :why_so_serious:

I know they like mixing it up, but I hope the season gets better than the first episode.

Yeah, the first episode just felt like a bunch of slightly disconnected gags, it didn't seem to flow as well as previous seasons. Hopefully it's just setting up some better episodes later on,

So yeah, 2nd episode of this season is much better. I like Patton Oswald as the lawyer, especially when he talked about his dogs :why_so_serious:

Oswalt makes almost anything better.

"Hey, me too!"

"Earl Campbell called, he wants his thighs back."

God damn I love this show.

So, this finished. I thought it was a kind of weak season unfortunately. Too much of just Archer trying to bang Veronica Dean and not enough of the other characters. Jumped the shark or just an off season?

Title: Re: Archer
Post by: K9 on June 11, 2016, 01:50:20 PM
I thought there were a couple of standout episodes, but by and large this wasn't a patch on previous seasons. I think the attempt to have a season-long story arc might have boxed them in a bit too much. It also felt like they didn't really introduce any new jokes, just rehashed old ones.

Apparently the ending is deliberately ambiguous because they didn't know if they were going to get renewed or not. I guess we'll see.

I get the feeling he's bored and burnt out. Would be better to not continue with another mediocre season than try and force it.

Still, that clearly was just another Archerbot.   :why_so_serious:

I wish they would go back to the spy theme - it felt natural whereas this season felt forced and the drug dealer theme was somewhere in between.

I think the Magnum PI/'80's detective show was a lot funnier on paper. There were some good jokes this season (love the Lambo on the tow truck) but the season felt too short.

Title: Re: Archer
Post by: K9 on June 13, 2016, 05:38:01 AM
Archer Vice worked because they could still have Archer doing all the spy stuff (running, jumping, shooting) and the plotlines pitched them against big targets (the Yakuza, South American dictators, Cuba). I still think the final four episodes of that season is one of the best plotlines the show has ever done. Trying to do the same with some shady hedge fund managers and an aging bunch of Hollywood celebrities just doesn't offer as much scope for wacky violence and capers.

That, plus they already plumbed the the major Magnum P.I. references in RAMPAGE.

Honestly I think they just came up with the awesome season trailer for fun and then had to follow through with it.

It was a nice homage to Sunset Boulevard, but really made for a slow, short season. I'm sad to see it go, but at the same time I think it overdid it's run. They should have ended it before last season and done Frisky Dingo 2.0

Title: Re: Archer
Post by: HaemishM on June 14, 2016, 07:54:57 AM
I would kill for a Frisky Dingo sequel.

Archer is literally Frisky Dingo 2.0, but with some actual editorial/creative control.  I mean, I laughed at Frisky Dingo, but couldn't make it through the entire run.  It suffered pretty badly from the Adult Swim "Here is some money artists!  Make what ever shit comes out of your head without any producers looking over shoulder to make your shit more coherent."  It's the exact same people who did that show, but with actual network creative control to make it watchable.

With the exception of some of the meandering through the sewers and sweat shop part, I thought Dingo was pretty coherent for the kind of show it was trying to be.

Title: Re: Archer

I think overall I enjoyed Frisky Dingo more than Archer. If H Jon Benjamin had voiced Xander Cruze it would have been about perfect.

Doesn't matter what you think, Archer gets 3 more seasons (http://www.geeksofdoom.com/2016/06/21/archer-extended-three-seasons?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+geeksofdoom+%28GEEKS+OF+DOOM%29).

The only hitch is that they will only be 8-episode seasons instead of 10 or 13, but still I'm happy. More Archer. Keep playing it until they run the jokes into the fucking ground.

Splitting it into shorter seasons could work especially if they go with a theme like the last two seasons.

Considering Archer (and his LMD) died at the end of last season (oops spoiler), I don't think we are meant to take much of anything on this show as lineal story telling.
