Title: The official "Hai! Here's mah bebbeh!" thread
Post by: voodoolily on December 21, 2009, 11:06:50 AM
Since many of us have a wee sprog in the house these days, and a baby-free cute pictures thread, I can't figure out why we don't just have a baby thread around here. I'll kick things off (since I've been mostly posting baby stuff in a different place).

Mah bebbeh Zephyr!

Bwahahahaha!  At least I only thought it instead of posting that. :D

Kid pics are cute in moderation.  At least no one here seems to identify themselves solely by their children.

Kudos to SnakeCharmer for having a furkid and admitting it as well.  EDIT - and a fine looking furkid it is, too!

Oh, everyone's human offspring aren't bad looking either. :D

In August, about 8.5 months old-

Last weekend (13 months old)-

Have better ones on my home PC and/or camera.

The little guy is now officially a toddler- he has realized that getting from place to place is easier if he walks rather than going down, crawling over, and getting back up  19 steps is the high score I have personally witnessed so far (yesterday). Just last week he was tiny yet chubby like little Zephyr, I swear.

His name is already hooked on phonics. The desk lady at his pediatrician's office always calls him "ze fire". She evidently doesn't know the noun zephyr.

I am not looking forward to teething, but will be happy to start feeding him solids. Zephyr just discovered his thumb and has started gumming it. I think he might be a lefty!

D'oh, he's just totally crapped his pants JUST as he's nodding off for a nap. So tempted to let him sleep in it.

Even without it can still hurt.  When I carried my little man to get fed, sometimes he would be in an insane hurry and reach out and grab hold of anything.  Had to learn to be careful with how he was positioned.

So tempted to let him sleep in it.
I've found that my guy would sleep longer if I didn't let him stew in it, as he would have a monster fit about halfway through his nap over it and then wouldn't go back to sleep!

I'm fairly sure that my wife and I have discussed my daughter's poop on at least a daily basis since she was born.   Even if it's just comes from a scheduling concern of "Oh hell, is my daughter going to shit herself awake again from her afternoon nap/middle of the night?"

The uncle that smells like scotch?

I was thinking more like the uncle who buys her the latest tickle me elmo/cabbage patch kids type gifts.   I do however like scotch...  I am new to this spoiling kids thing, need to do some research

That is half the fun of kids- getting to go toy shopping again!

I have a friend with a seven year old that I just can't stand.  He's a fucking little monster with no redeeming qualities.  I'm on edge whenever he's around.  He's the type of kid that you endeavor to be nice to only because you know he's making a list in his head of all the people who have "wronged" him in his life, and will one day cleanse from the earth in payback.  I want nothing to do with him and of course, he thinks I'm the greatest.  His mom had to dissuade him from calling me Dad all the time.

Still, I love that he gives me the excuse for going to the toy section of any store I'm in so I can get him something.

Cause I have none of my own, here is my niece Zora born Saturday.
As for the name, it is after a famous author... my response to that was "uhmm there is this game called Legend of Zelda.. you may have heard of it"

Zora was on my shortlist if it was gonna be a girl.  :oh_i_see:

Great looking baby! Gratz on the new toy shopping.

Well, I WISH this was my backyard. It is the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where my family is from, beautiful pristine country. It's a five hour drive so I make it up once in the summer and once during hunting season. Thanks though guys!

No pictures just now but the comments of dorkiness prompted me to come in here and brag that my son has almost gotten 100% in Lego Harry Potter.  My wife tells me to go help him and I just sit and watch as he knocks out about six characters and two or three gold bricks.  There is ONE gold brick left, no idea where it is, so we might be stuck here.

Also, he is all about Harry Potter audio books.  I'm glad that Bakugan thing disappeared. :awesome_for_real:

When he has on his cap, Logan looks a lot like Nobby the House Elf from Harry Potter.

I thought I could see a difference in the first pic, which is what sparked the question. I have always wondered how parents figured it out when the kids were REALLY little. How often have they named kids and then unknowingly called them by the wrong names later on down the line?

Their noses look slightly different, at least to me.  Congrats on the safe and full-term arrival.  That "full-term" part is really awesome since I'd heard most twins don't make it that long.

Took advantage of a beautiful afternoon and went across town to catch a 4:30 O's game with the wife and kid.  She spent most of the game in the kid area, but I did manage to get her to watch an inning or two in the stands, before it was back to the bouncy house.

Awwwww!

To any new parents whose babies are colic-y, this stuff is amazing. Is also a hiccup cure, we give a very small dose when one of the babies have painful hiccups (the kind they get mad at). It's expensive, but it seriously probably saved me and my GF's relationship. It's FDA approved and all natural. It turned my son into such a pleasant baby, as opposed to screaming fits for hours at a time. We try to not use it much, but is awesome to have when needed.

Another thing to try for babies with colic is to have mom try a gluten-free diet.  Celiac is very common.

Edit:  Of course this is only pertinent of mom is breast feeding.

June 21st, or thereabouts, I should be making my own contributions to this thread. It seems that regardless of the assurances my wife's had her entire adult life that she would need help getting pregnant, a simple swap (and pause) of birth control pills due to blood pressure and TA DA! 40 and pregnant.

I speak cynically, but really, we're looking forward to it. Very nervous about December 1st when we do the initial tests for Down's Syndrom, though. All the statistics due to her age have me nerved up.

That should be on an album cover somewhere. Awesome.

Have some new pics to get posted eventually, but had to mention that my son turned 2 on Monday. And then got his first ear infection on Wednesday night. Actually, his first AND second- both ears. He woke up around 3AM Thursday morning and was a crying whimpering mess for the next 20 hours. Got him into the doc and got some antibiotics for him; he started feeling a bit more chipper about midnight last night. And promptly threw up his 2nd dose of ABs all over mommy and daddy's bed. And then was so fired up and awake after that he wouldn't calm down enough to sleep until about 4AM. Which means I have had about 7 hours of sleep since Wednesday morning. Oh and threw my back out Tuesday night too, so even the sleep I got before all this was fitful at best.

Goddamn I am glad it will be the weekend soon. And then a short week. That is worth giving thanks for  :awesome_for_real:

Antibiotics never fail to impress me with their almost immediate efficacy. They are like magic! Until all the bugs get resistant, at least.

Apologies for the babbling. I did mention I am running a severe sleep deficit, right?

Lucky you.  My son started getting them at 4 months and continued to get them every 6 weeks or so until he was almost 2.  One doctor wanted to do tubes, the other said "he might grow out of it, let's hold off on surgery" and are we glad we did.  He has only had one in almost 17 months now.

Yep- we have been mostly spoiled- he is a reasonably low maintenance, happy kid, so I knew something was amiss pretty quickly. According to my mom I got my first double infection at 6 months. I can still remember having them as a little kid, so they must have lasted until I was 3 or 4 at least.

Neither I nor my kids ever had one.  Though my daughter has horrible ear wax problems that she inherited from her great grandfather.  Holding your 3-year old down so the ENT doctor can flush them is no fun.  Worse was seeing them pull a 1/4" ball of wax out.   :ye_gods:

When Elena had an ear infection, we didn't diagnose it quite quickly enough and her wee drum burst with the pus.

But, yeah, the antibiotics work like a fucking charm and very quickly.  Alas for Elena, the healing persisted for a wee while.  Thankfully, she's back to hearing like a bat, unlike her old man.

I had them constantly as a child. The only factors I can think of that could have contributed were bad seasonal allergies, and the fact that my mom smoked like a chimney.

Blah.

We found out the first time around what we were going to have, so the wife wanted our second to be a surprise.    She went in for a checkup on Friday and the nurse couldn't hear the baby's heartbeat, so they had to do a sonogram.  Unfortunately, the nurse let it slip what the sex was.  It wouldn't be so bad, except we're at 33 weeks  - so basically at the home stretch of this thing.

If I remember the theory  rightly - bottles leak a bit more than nipples during feeding, so formula is more apt to enter the ear.  Pacifiers are also viewed as a contributing factor because the force of suction can interfere with the ear tube function and cause blockage.

It's something to do with the suction.  My son had ear trouble for exactly the time he was using regular bottles, which wasn't very long.  Using the Doc Brown bottles, no ear issues at all.  Once he want to his gran's and she only had a regular bottle, and his ears hurt after that.  I know, YMMV and all that shit, but tits don't develop suction like a bottle does.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that kids only get ear infections when they drink from bottles, there're just data to suggest that breastfed babies get fewer ear infections than bottle-fed.

18 months.  He didn't sport the baby look for too long as his face has always been pretty lean.  Got that huge ass baby belly, though.

And yah, a lot of teeth.  Got a bunch of molars recently.  That was fun.

The Holiday themed fashion choices in the 18-24 month range are somewhat limited.   It's something he'll wear at most 3 times. Also, I have no say in this matter.  I did get him a Batman t-shirt and Darth Vader sneakers, however.   :drill:

Did a quick overnight trip down to DC for the White House Easter Egg Roll.   I would have pictures of my son, but mostly, they'd be nothing but him sleeping in the stroller.

This is from a pond in the Constitution Gardens (near the Washington Monument).

And this is her actually rolling an Easter Egg on the White House lawn.

Ticket lottery.  A few years ago, they basically did it as first come first served, which was a complete mess and crashed the fuck out of the site.  This year, they did it as a random lottery, and we were lucky enough to get in.

My family has always said "I don't know why they call it the terrible twos,."   Three is the age my kids and all my nephews got really get obnoxious.  They leveled out again at four, but that year of boundry pushing really made them a handfull.

I will say that so long as you maintain alpha status and don't give in out of sheer weariness they seem to listen well until they're teens*.  My wife gave in all the time and both children don't stop pushing for her to give in until dad steps in to say no.  It's really bad with my daughter, where she gave in even more than with my son, so the child simply doesn't listen to her at all.

*The daughter turns 13 this year. We'll see how well she continues to listen to me. I'm trying the "let her find who she is, but enforce strict guidelines within which she's allowed to move freely." approach.  i.e.  No staying up to 3am just because you want to becausde it's not in your best interests, but go ahead and write on your clothes or your rooms walls and listen to that godawful blood on the dance floor group.

Cute pics all! On the phone so don't have a pic of my lad who is now 8 and has a more interesting social calendar than I do, but I did just find out I'm going to have a second arriving next spring! Yay! Mostly... Hehe.

Congrats! That's a pretty big age spread, they'll both be the only child (and spoiled to match)!

We have our 2nd (AND LAST) on the way too- March 8th, give or take. And daddy will be getting snipped soon afterwards on the off chance my wife and I will ever have time or energy for sex again  :oh_i_see:

That's my plan sometime next year.   We're 2 and done - but got nailed this year with bills and the like, so I'm just waiting till next year to pay the out of pocket costs via FSA.

Twins are really damn tough.

'Twins' is actually Latin for 'I wonder if there's a gun that doesn't taste so metallic'. ;)

I got snipped last year:  couldn't do it fast enough.  It's really a total breeze:  in, out, and done in 45 minutes...a trip to the dentist for filling work is FAR worse.

I didn't think it'd be this tough.

Though, I have a good friend who has a collicky 6 month old and high maintenance 3 year old and I wouldn't trade twins for that EVER.

Though, I have a good friend who has a collicky 6 month old and high maintenance 3 year old and I wouldn't trade twins for that EVER.

What I wasn't prepared for:  you essentially become two single parents living under the same roof.  My family is very small:  I've lost both of my parents when they turned 60 (I'm 36), and my wife lost her Dad a long time ago.  We don't have close brothers and sisters so there's nobody to help.  For the first year, the only way we didn't kill ourselves was to break up the night into two 6 hour shifts so one of us could sleep at least a little bit.  I took from 9pm to 3am, and my wife took 3am to 9am (thank God for Fallout 3!).

As a result of having no help, the twins tag-team both of us to the point where we never get any breaks.  They are both 3 now so it's better, but now rather than constant feeding and diaper changing it's breaking up fights and stopping arguments, and enforcing time-outs.

I think when you have two that are separated by a few years,  you and your partner can experience each stage individually, and you each get a chance to get away and recover.  When my wife and I aren't working, it's full time child care at our house.  It's 16 hour days every day, 24/7 for both of us, because one parent really can't watch two crazy three year olds.  Watching a 1 year old and a 4 year old is a completely different experience as they're going through different things at different times.

For those thinking of IVF:  you will be asked for how many embryo's to implant, the doctor will not make a recommendation.  They will put in 1 or put in 10 if you ask them, as you are paying out-of-pocket for the experience.  Knowing what I know now, I would *never* have agreed to implant multiple embryo's.  Fortunately with cryogenic storage, you can always try again on the next cycle.

Of course I wouldn't change having my boy and girl:  they are wonderful kids.  But boy I have never hated life so much at any time in the past as I have the last few years.... I don't care what Dick Cheney says:  prolonged sleep deprivation and constant emotional stress are *torture*.

I had two 15 months apart, it was a cake-walk compared to these twins. Miguel put it very well, there are never any breaks. I get an hour occasionally, when I want to sacrifice my sleep, to play some LOL. It took a long time before we could even enjoy the twins, it was so much work. I can't imagine triplets, or more.

That's it exactly and great way to explain it.

I watch friends just hand their kid back and forth and we just don't have that option. We've been pretty lucky as both boys generally sleep 10-12 hours through the night so we don't have to take shifts and it's been that way since about 3 months.

Mid pic is excellent and if you REALLY care about the flash, I'm sure you can edit it out easily enough.   I think it adds something because otherwise it'd be "babies. in. spaaaaaaaace" as the rest of the background is so inky black.

Or reach for the camera. Or look away. Or hit their brother in the face with a little plastic phone. They look happy in the middle picture, but I assure you - violence is about to ensue.

Ahh, has he gone/going through the "everything in my arms at once" phase?  My son has finally started handing me his trains to carry instead of trying to go up the stairs holding the entire cast from Thomas the Tank Engine.  The worst was when he'd refuse to give up the toys and fall asleep with them in his hands.  Always nice to get a 3am wake up call of "JAMES! My niece has taken to doing this.  Her logic is that it's mommy and daddy's fault for not putting the toys in her bed after she fell asleep (yes, she did say that).  She's hysterical about her Thomas... never seen a 3 year old so into something...

I'm not a parent, so feel free to disregard this with extreme prejudice, but there seems to be a parenting style that treats kids as if they can be reasoned with, as if they're friends you can negotiate with.  The parent lead lives of haunted exhaustion, badgered and cajoled by their kids into just about any concession. I'd probably be one of these parents if I were one, so I am not getting on a high horse here, but it just seems that that's a dangerous road.

Yeah, but try telling the average parent that and see how far you get.  Suggesting that children need to be "trained" in anything - going to bed at a certain time, acting like human beings in public - generally can result in getting an earful on how that will somehow harm the child.

The average parent was lucky to find the right hole to inseminate.  I tend not to aim my advice at average people. I have two good friends who had a kid at the same time as we did and their son is an enormous shitty cockweasel because they love him so very very much.

So I'm sure it'll be a comfort to them as they try very hard not to cry as the little dickhead gets the lethal fucking injection for stoning two of the neighbours children after he'd tied them up and pissed on them.

This.

I am the law around here, and the rule is we say goodnight to whichever of his cars/trucks/vans/buses/trains he's holding before bathtime and they stay downstairs. My worry was always that he'd roll over and get a facefull of cars, which would wake him up. I am totally rigid about this, for some reason, even though it's kind of not that big a deal. I just don't negotiate with toddlers.

If I do decide to give in on something (usually a snack, even though I'm fixing dinner), I always tell him that I've changed my mind instead of just rolling over and giving in to his pleas.

Those guys are super cute.  You did good work, bro.

Thank you, Sir.

The kid in the Curious George shirt is going to be a supervillian.

A very curious supervillian!

Logan exhibits quite a few supervillian characteristics imo. Brandon will find a bin to stand on to get to places, Logan will just push Brandon over and use him.

  This one made my day.

He thought that was hilarious and walked around like that for awhile.

Apparently it's that time of the year. My 2nd daughter was born almost 3 weeks ago. Everyone's having babies! (and if you aren't, better get started now so you can be on the next wave)

Ok ok here's a pic, she's got more meat on her bones now (started at 5lbs 6oz).

I've finally picked myself up a decent camera that I obviously didn't use for any of these pictures, but hopefully once I learn how to use it a bit better, my photos will improve too.

They look like adorable boys.  Do they have to have everything the same (like identical toys) or are they fine each having a car, for example?

Nope, they are pretty good having different things. Brandon gets attached to a different toy each day and that's the one he HAS to have, but generally speaking they play with different toys fairly well.

Two year old twins.   :ye_gods:  I know everyone likes to say their kid never went through the terrible twos, but they're full of shit or raising zombies.  At two, it was like a switch went on in his little brain. "I don't have to fucking listen to you anymore. MUAHAHAHAHA.  You think that last fit was bad? CHECK THIS OUT!"  3 has been infinitely easier.

Yeah, a lot of people tried to tell me that 3 was worse than 2, but I haven't found that to be the case at all with our older boy.  He was very, very verbal by that point though, and I think being able to communicate makes things easier on them.  The 20 month old, however, is a wild animal.  If you turn your eye for an instant he is guaranteed to be doing something that would very quickly lead to death or dismemberment if not averted in time.

As active as my four year old is, I figured once organized sports started up, we'd be living in the ER.  Apparently, I was optimistic, as all it took was the second day of preschool.

A fall off the monkey bars led to this
which showed this
and ended with a sushi dinner and cast

She's handling it pretty well - I think most of the annoyance is going to come when she realizes she can't do certain things for 6-8 weeks.

I was going to just throw this at ghost,  but decided to make it an open question instead.   Going from one kid to two kids was a bit of a  :ye_gods: experience.  Somehow however,  we've gone from me getting snipped this year to serious discussion about going for a third.  One of the dads in my basketbal group phrased it that your life is over the second anyhow,  the third is easy after that. Anyone want to relate their experience?

It certainly isn't "easy" going from 2 to 3, but it certainly isn't the jump that going from 1 to 2 is.

You can't oops twice. After the first oops, not getting something tied or dealt with is on you.

EDIT: With the exception that you did, and the procedure got fucked up or didn't take.

I think part of the issue is that it took these folks years (literally about 10) to have babies 1 and 2 due to fertility issues.  Then they are suddenly breeding like rabbits with no help at all.
